| wkangas@lsj.com

MASON — The Sun Dried Music Fes-

tival is growing in size and popularity, according to Mason Mayor Leon Clark. Hosted by the Downtown Development Authority (DDA) of the City of Mason, the second annual Mason Sun Dried Music Fest is on Saturday, Aug. 27 from noon to 11:40 p.m. In its second year, the festival will have more bands and add an extra performance the night before the main event, which will run all day on Aug. 27. “This is really something special,” Clark said. “We are building on the success of last year.”

Additions New this year will be a street dance the night before the main event. This addition is on Aug. 26, from 7 to 11 p.m., and will be featuring the “Full House Band.” A refreshment tent will also be open Friday evening. Clark said he thought the “night before” event was a good way to kick

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED There will be a volunteer meeting for new and returning volunteers at City Limits in Mason on Tuesday, Aug. 23 at 6 p.m. Volunteer T-shirts are provided and will be distributed the day of the event. Volunteers need to check in 30 minutes prior to their shift to pick up a T-shirt and final assignment.

things off. “We will be setting up the stage and making preparations anyway,” Clark said. “So we thought why not have a band and a dance while we do it?”

Homegrown On Aug. 27, the festival will feature homegrown talent this year, he said, and expand on the community theme. “We’ve added a children’s area that includes an inflatable obstacle course that is the biggest I’ve ever seen,” Clark said. Plenty of vendors will be on hand for food and drinks and there will be a family tent section as well as a traditional beer

Mason Board of Ed signs contracts over summer WILL KANGAS

MASON — A two-year contract between Mason Public Schools and its teacher’s union is expected to be part of a slew of contracts finished by the Mason Board of Education before school starts this September. “We hope to have all of our contracts in place before the start of the school year,” Mason Public Schools Superintendent Mark Dillingham said. At its Aug. 8 meeting the board approved several contracts with most of its employee bargaining units, including district administration, information technology

and central office support staff. But the largest in terms of personnel is the contract with the teacher’s union, which has been ratified and only needs final board approval at its next meeting. Teacher’s union spokesperson Anne Hudgins was not available for comment. “We are glad that we have this done and can move forward,” Dillingham said. Like many contracts in the area, the cost of health insurance was a concession for all employees. District employees will have to share the burden of rising health care costs, Dillingham said. “That was something that was unavoidable,” he said. “Along with the rise in the

$500,000 with another increase expected next year. “That was $500,000 in real money,” Dillingham said. The school district had to trim $675,000 out of its budget this year, including $80,000 from the athletic department budget. Dillingham said the district was fortunate to have previous Superintnedent Jim Harvey, who had the foresight to close an elementary school a couple of years ago, which has helped the bottom line. Cedar Street Elementary is currently being used to house administrative offices, an alternative education school and childhood development services.

MASON POLICE REPORT John Stressman Mason Police Chief

Between August 2nd and August 8th Mason police investigated 54 reported incidents involving a variety of activities—both criminal and noncriminal. These are some of those incidents worth noting and intended to keep our citizens informed of Department activities. August 2 - Officers were dispatched to a residential burglary in progress. The dispatcher relayed information from the caller who reported hiding in the bedroom while someone was trying too break-in. Officers arrived and found an intoxicated female and her male son outside the apartment door. The female claimed the resident was her boyfriend who had allowed her to sleep it off at his place when she had been out drinking. The resident stated the female was a former friend and casual acquaintance but added the pair tried numerous ways to get into his residence, including trying to remove screens from the windows. He denied the female suspect’s claim that she stays over with him when she is too drunk to drive. The pair was taken to a safe location and released, with the female receiving a violation for being intoxicated and creating a public disturbance. There will be no charges sought for the attempted entry of the residence. Graffiti was discovered and reported by a Public Works employee while he was opening the skate park for the day. An unknown vandal(s) wrote; “Jesus is religion the cross is a fashion statement,” “MSPF,” “SM 2011,” “ 4 Lyfe,” and “…the poser posse.” The investigation remains open, and any information someone may have regarding suspects would be appreciated. A Mason resident reported a possible attempted fraud after receiving a telephone call claiming that her husband owed money for coins he had been purchasing. The alleged dealer gave the name of the purchaser, which was the same as her husband’s except for the middle initial. The complainant reported straightening the caller out and denying her husband ever made any purchases. The investigator called the number shown on caller ID and got a dead line. The number originated in Crow

Wing, Minnesota and came from the Cross Lake Telephone Company. The complainant reported no financial loss, and the matter is closed pending any further leads. An officer received a complaint of an unwanted subject causing trouble at an area business. The complainant reported the suspect—identified by name—frequents the facility which hosts a number of meetings, including a senior volunteer group. The complainant reported the suspect makes inappropriate salacious gestures to young females he may encounter, and steals pop cans and other food items he may happen upon. The complainant also stated the suspect’s conduct “creeps out” the female employees and she was afraid to confront him about the problems he causes. The officer recognized the suspect and had knowledge of his probation status. The probation officer has been contacted and has agreed to present the matter before the presiding judge. Any further action is yet to be determined.

Church vandalism Graffiti vandalism was reported at an area church where a reserved parking sign was spray painted over with red spray paint. Some of the brick wall near the sign was also sprayed with the same red paint. An officer stopped a car for a vehicle defect after noticing the badly damaged windshield. Investigation uncovered the driver had just left court and was headed out of town, but was also driving on a suspended license for failing to pay fines and costs subsequent to an operating while impaired charge in Jackson County. The driver was released with a citation for operating while suspended and the defective equipment. The car was turned over to a licensed driver. August 3 - During the early morning, dark time hours, a general bulletin was broadcast through the Dispatch Center for a naked female who had entered a restaurant in Meridian Township and begun threatening to kill everybody inside. Thirty minutes later, Mason officers were dispatched to a report of a naked female breaking into a camper parked outside a Mason area residence. While on the way to the address, officers happened upon an abandoned car—matching the Meridian Township description—parked in the roadway, hazard lights on, and the driver’s

door standing open. When the officer arrived, they found the suspect, now wearing a shirt and wrapped in a towel, lying in the front yard of the complainant’s residence. The complainant reported he and his wife were awoken by the sounds of the suspect trying to break into their camper. The complainant investigated and found the suspect, clad only in the shirt, lying on the front lawn. Once he determined the suspect was not a threat, he retrieved a towel and covered her exposed areas. Medical assistance was summoned, and the suspect, taken to an area facility for treatment. The totality of the incident involves illicit drugs and travels over four different communities, ending in the front yard of the Mason home. A cross jurisdictional investigation is being conducted, with the likelihood of multiple warrants being sought at its conclusion. No further details are being released at this time.

Property destruction A Mason resident reported a malicious destruction of property after discovering someone had shot the windshield of his car with what appears to have been a BB gun while it was parked overnight on Holt Street. The victim had no suspects. A second incident was reported on East Oak Street where the victim heard the glass in an outside window break. When the officers examined the damage, they found where it appeared two BB gun pellets had struck another part of the window, but the glass did not break. While doing a neighborhood canvas, one officer found a neighbor who reported discovering two or three juvenile males climbing a ladder next to her house. The witness reported yelling out the window at them, after which they all ran off. The code enforcement officer opened a nuisance complaint for tall grass at a residence in the 800 block of Holt Street, noting the front yard grass was 6 inches, and the backyard grass was 3 feet tall. The property owner has been sent notice to abate the nuisance by a deadline or face enforcement action. August 4 - The Dispatch Center broadcast an alert for a vehicle being driven erratically north on 127 from Leslie. Officers spotted the car and watched as it swerved across the center line and off and onto the shoul-

der of the 127 roadway at Kipp Road. Contact with the driver found she was not impaired but overly fatigued, and she was wanted by Lansing Township on an assault charge and for two property crime warrants held by the Detroit Police. The officers’ attention were also drawn to the passenger who was obviously impaired, had a burn mark on his forehead—later found to be caused while lighting a cigarette—and a cigarette in his mouth which kept falling out. This, with other unusual behavior, caused the officers to ask the driver about the passenger’s condition, with which she responded that she was missing 30 doses of Klonopin from her prescription bottle and suspected the passenger took them. Medical assistance was called and transported the passenger to an area facility for treatment. The driver was arrested and turned over to Lansing Township Police, and the car was impounded. An officer was called to the scene of what was believed to be a fire of suspicious origin on West Ash Street. The complainant reported the premises had been vacated after water damage caused by recent storms and it appeared that some time since a fire occurred in the kitchen, leaving evidence of its occurrence. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, and the investigation has been turned over to the MFD Fire Investigator at this point. August 5 - An officer stopped a car on South Cedar for defective equipment. Investigation of the driver, a medical marijuana cardholder, found he had been imbibing and showed enough physical impairment to continue an operating while under the influence of drugs investigation. Once the probable cause was established, the driver was arrested and a blood level search warrant was served and executed, after which the driver was lodged in the Ingham County Jail. The following day, the Ingham County Prosecutor’s office issued a warrant charging the suspect with OUID. An officer was called to assist a citizen at the Skate Park. A 13 year old was refusing to leave the park with his mother, and the officer was asked to speak to him. The officer did, and the youth left willingly. The matter is closed.

An officer stopped a bicyclist riding in the street during dark time hours without benefit of lights to operate by. Investigation uncovered the cyclist was carrying a marijuana pipe packed with marijuana and a container which had held marijuana. Once it was established the cyclist was not a medical marijuana card holder and not visibly impaired, he was released with citations for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, but without the pipe, which was seized as evidence. While stopping at an area liquor establishment for an inspection, an officer saw a woman standing between vehicles in the parking lot, and then another, who stood up suddenly next to her. The officer then noticed a stream of liquid flowing into a drain, and upon further investigation, determined the woman had been urinating. The woman claimed the wait for access to the restroom inside was too long and that her physician had told her waiting might be an unhealthy practice. She was issued a citation for urinating in public, and the pair was released. The code enforcement officer initiated two nuisance code violations on Okemos Street; one in the 700 block for junk accumulation, a brush pile, and 3-foot-tall grass in the back yard; the other, in the 300 block for a brush pile. Residents have been contacted, and voluntary compliance to abate the nuisances is anticipated.

Assault and battery Officers were called to an assault and battery incident at a residential facility on Kerns Road. It was alleged the assault occurred after a rules violation when the suspect became agitated, broke two computer monitors, and assaulted a facility staff member, all while holding onto her infant child. The employee was injured while trying to insure the safety of the infant during the melee. The suspect, who told officers she did not like the rules there, calmed down when told she was returning to Kent County, her place of origin, once her ride arrived. The report will be turned over to the Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office for review of charges.

MASON POLICE REPORT August 6 - Vandalism to public property was reported in Lee Austin Park. A bucket of light green paint had been poured over the stone monument. The same green paint had been poured in the intersection and on the curb of Maple and Lansing Street. A bus was also struck where it was parked outside a nearby service garage in the 200 block of West Maple. A

Theft of money A Mason resident called to report his grandson had stolen a $600 wall clock some time between Friday night and Saturday morning. Although the suspect told the victim his friend took the clock, the suspect has a long history of victimizing his grandfather, as was the case in the unauthorized use of a credit card reported last week. The investigation continues, but the suspect remains at large after an Eaton County Probation Violation warrant was issued for a dirty urine drop and another felony warrant for Larceny involving the aforementioned credit card fraud.

100 mph in city Officers were called to the scene of an accident in the 400 block of West Ash Street. The call came in through the Dispatch Center as a speeding vehicle, traveling about 100 mph near the downtown Courthouse. Officers located a stopped car with a deflated tire. Emergency first aid was being rendered to a man later found to be the driver. Investigation found the driver and his wife were traveling along when the car suddenly accelerated. The wife, who looked at her husband and found him in medical distress, had to steer the vehicle several blocks before hitting a curb, deflating the tire, and bringing the car to a rest. Emergency medical responded, and the victim was taken to the hospital. Unfortunately, in spite of the best efforts of all those rendering aid, the victim passed away a short time later. August 7 - Officers were dispatched to a neighbor complaint after an upstairs resident of an apartment building was reported to be yelling obscenities at the complainant and his children. The complainant wanted the incident docu-

mented because of repeated problems with the neighbor. The neighbor reported the complainant must know about whoever broke into his apartment, stole his reading glasses and toothpicks, and poked him in the face several times. The officers reported the neighbor was agitated and threatening in his dealing with them, and they noted several pairs of glasses lying about and no visible marks or injuries to the man’s face. The neighbor, as has been done in the past, will be referred to Protective Services for follow-up.

Family dispute Officers were dispatched to a family dispute at another Mason apartment complex where they found an intoxicated man waiting outside in the parking lot for them. The man stated his niece kicked him out, all she did was talk about money, and he was sick of it. The niece reported she got mad because the man kept leaving the door open and letting mosquitoes in, he continuously had been drinking, and she was sick of it. She added that although she had not been threatened nor assaulted, she intended

to obtain a Person Protection Order, and she wanted him gone. In the interest of the peace and the intoxicated man’s safety, an officer provided a ride to a safe place. Crash Reports: Officers investigated 3 on-street hit-and-run crashes. ****

Ballinger is Mason graduate MASON — Many acts at this year’s Sun Dried Music Festival will have local connections, but this is as local as it gets. Kris Ballinger of the “Ballinger Family Band” is from Mason and graduated in 1970. Nowadays Kris, husband Dale and their son Ethan live in middle Tennessee on the Cumberland Plateau. The Ballingers play music that ranges from old time fiddle tunes to gypsy swing to contemporary ballads. The Ballinger Family Band just returned from a tour in Japan earlier this summer. They played in 5 cities including Tokyo and Osaka and did a bluegrass festival at the foot of Mt Fuji. “Our last concert was in a downtown club in Tokyo called ‘Rocky Top,’” Ballinger said in an email. “How perfect.” Kris and Dale have been playing music for most of their lives, they played with national fiddlin’ champion Frazier Moss for seven years and performed with fiddler Junior Daugherty at Carnegie Hall in New York City.

Meetings set to address scams mortgage foreclosure,” said Hertel. “Beyond those who lose their homes, other property owners in the vicinity suffer the loss of value on their residence. County residents feel the pinch when there are fewer resources to provide for services like public safety and health programs. Even if a homeowner is not currently facing a foreclosure situation, awareness of the problem in our community is extremely important.” “Even if they feel that their home and their finances are in a safe position, there will be some great information at these meetings for our residents,” said Hertel. “These are a lot of scams and dangerous people out there who know how to go after the equity you have in your home. The best thing that we can do to keep our property ownership stable in Ingham County is to educate and inform our citizens.” The next meeting on the schedule is planned for Tuesday, Aug. 16, at 5:30 p.m. It will take place at the Ingham County Fairground Community Hall, in Mason. Meetings have already been hosted in north Lansing and East Lansing and future meetings are scheduled in Mason, Leslie, Williamston, Okemos, Webberville, Holt and other areas of Lansing.

MASON — Ingham County Register of Deeds Curtis Hertel Jr. has announced a series of town-hall meetings to be hosted throughout the county. The meetings will be staged at community centers and meeting halls in the various cities and townships of Ingham County, over the next three to four months. The next meeting will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 16, at 5:30 p.m. at the Ingham County Fairground in Mason. “We know that our fight against foreclosure fraud has raised a lot of questions from our citizens recently,” said Hertel. “We want to be able to get out and answer some of those questions in person.” Since taking office in 2009, Hertel has been actively seeking to raise awareness in Ingham County of the many different types of property fraud that have been increasing throughout Michigan. In September of 2009, he launched the Property Fraud Alert system, a free service to Ingham County residents, to notify them

when any property documents containing their names were recorded in the county. In 2011, Hertel has launched a series of investigations into alleged foreclosure frauds that were perpetuated in Ingham County over the last decade. With the help of the Ingham County Commissioners, he has begun an aggressive campaign to obtain legal assistance for those who have been confirmed as victims. Hertel will be joined at many of the upcoming meetings by representatives from Legal Services of South Central Michigan, the non-profit firm he has enlisted to help advise citizens who have been directly affected by fraud. “It’s been a pretty busy year in my office, with the different frauds that we have discovered,” continued Hertel. “Many people who were the subject of these illegal foreclosures, haven’t even realized it yet. Most have already been evicted from those homes. And I know that the headlines about these situations in the newspaper have probably created more questions than they have answered. I want to spend the next few months reaching out to people where they live, to answer some of those questions.” “We all pay the price for

MASON — Joshua Cash, a Capital Area Career Center student from Webberville, recently competed in the SkillsUSA National Championship event in Kansas City, Mo., placing fifth in the nation in his designated contest. Cash, a recent graduate of Webberville High School, competed in the Building Maintenance category of the national competition. SkillsUSA programs include regional, state and national competitions, where students demonstrate occupational and leadership skills. Skills competitions prepare America’s high performance workers by providing quality education experiences for students in leadership, teamwork, citizenship and character development. For the Building Maintenance contest, Cash was tested in the following competency areas: Liquid measurement, stripping and finishing floors, bonnet scrubbing and extracting carpets, restroom mainte-

nance and office, windows and wall general maintenance. “All of us at the Capital Area Career Center are extremely proud of Joshua and his accomplishments with the SkillsUSA national program,” states Jeffrey Bohl, principal at the Career Center. “To place fifth in the nation in his respective contest, is an honor he can carry with him for the remainder of his life,” Bohl also noted. The Career Center, operated by Ingham Intermediate School District, offers on- and off-site programs for high school juniors and seniors who reside in Dansville, East Lansing, Haslett, Holt, Leslie, Mason, Okemos, Stockbridge, Waverly, Webberville and Williamston. Applications are also accepted from Lansing School District and Eaton and Clinton County schools. For more information, visit http://cacc.inghamisd.org. — From Ingham Intermediate School District

Mason area center to help injured vets MASON

Mid-Michigan’s Origami Brain Injury Rehabilitation Center proudly announced recently that it will have the opportunity to serve and rehabilitate veterans of the United States Armed Forces suffering from brain injuries. It is one of only 21 facilities nationwide selected by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (V.A.) to participate in the new Assisted Living for Veterans with Traumatic Brain Injury Pilot Program. The program, the first of its kind for the V.A., helps veterans with traumatic brain injuries who need long-term residential care by placing them in high-quality assisted living facilities like Origami that are closer to their homes and families, while avoiding institutional and hospital settings. Before the pilot program, veterans with brain injuries would have to obtain treatment far from home at a V.A. facility. Now, through treatment facilities like Origami, veterans are provided with more comfortable settings while still receiving access to a wide range of post-acute services and supports that will help them on the road to rehabilitation. “It was an honor to be chosen to participate in this pilot program but the real honor is having the opportunity to work with heroes from our armed forces,”

said Origami’s Director of Program Operations Eric Hannah, MSA. “These brave men and women put their lives on the line every day to defend our freedom. Everyone at Origami is excited about the chance to give something back by helping them recover from traumatic brain injuries so much closer to their homes and loved ones.” Origami is a nonprofit organization located on a 35 acre wooded campus in Mason, just outside of Lansing. The facility offers a continuum of care for adults who have sustained a traumatic brain injury, from residential to community-based and outpatient programs with the resources available to return people to productive and active lives. Origami operates in partnership with the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine and Peckham, Inc. The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation within MSU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine provides Origami with expertise in clinical management and on-site physician coverage. To learn more about participation in the V.A.’s pilot program at Origami, veterans or their families can call (517) 455-0264. More information about Origami can be found online at www.OrigamiRehab.org.

Mason gridders prepare Scott Yoshonis syoshonis@lsj.com

MASON -- Mason began practice for their 2011 football season on Aug. 8 with a great deal of confidence. The Bulldogs will be the prohibitive favorite to win their fourth consecutive league title, this year their first in the newly realigned CAAC Gold, and look to make a deep playoff run after losing two district title games in the last three postseasons. The Bulldogs ended 2010 with a 24-14 loss to DeWitt in the district championship game, but senior running back Saylor LaVallii hopes that he can help the Bulldogs take the next step this season. “A district title would be awesome, since we came up short last year,” LaVallii said. “We have a lot of young guys we need to get

rolling. Hopefully we can put a few wins together and have a successful season.” The Bulldogs return several of their key contributors from a 2010 season which they finished 9-2, and their four conference opponents, Jackson Northwest, Eaton Rapids, Charlotte and Waverly, had a combined record of 6-30. One of those two losses was to St. Johns, which forced a three-way tie for the title in the CAAC Red. The two will meet as nonleague foes this year, one of two games at the end of Mason’s schedule against teams that finished 8-3 last year (Croswell-Lexington is the other) that Bulldog coach Jerry VanHavel hopes will prepare his team for postseason success. “We do have St. Johns in our non-conference (schedule), so we’re excited about that,” VanHavel said. “ I love these kids, they’re

COME

going to be a good team, and I’m excited to get going.” There will be a sense of urgency about the senior Bulldogs, five of whom will be playing in their third year or more of varsity football, including LaVallii and quarterback Thomas McNamara. “They’ve had great careers, but we want their best years to be their senior year,” VanHavel said. But there will be a learning curve at several positions as well, as a statistical oddity gives VanHavel just eight juniors in his program. “We have some kids with a lot of experience, and we have kids with no experience,” he said. “We need our seniors to step up because we don’t have a lot of depth, so our experienced kids have to provide leadership.” Mason will start their season on Aug. 26.
