Emotional commemoration Mason’s solemn 9/11 event touches hearts of hundreds of people Will Kangas

MASON – Mason Assistant Fire Chief Mark Howe said emotions were high on Sept. 11, as the city held a presentation of the piece of the twin towers that it acquired recently on the 10th anniversary of the tragic event. “It was already an emotional day based on the date, but having a piece of one of the towers there gave an extra feeling right in your gut,” Howe said. “Just knowing what that piece of metal represents was very intense for me.” Over 300 people came to the memorial, which was held near the

Howe is also Vice President at Dart Bank, which sponsors the “Mason Cares” day. Howe said what has amazed him even more than the turnout, is the amount of residents that have stopped by to see and touch the steel girder all week following the memorial. “I see from six to a dozen people a day come up to it and either take pictures or just touch it and leave,” Howe said. “The emotional impact is heavy.” Sue Chapman and her daughters, Kaylie, 10, and Emma, 7, came on Sept. 13 to see it. “I just wanted my girls to see it so they can know what happened 10 years ago,” she said. “They ask about it and heard about it in school. We were coming through and I felt like

it was a good idea to stop and see it.” Howe said plans are underway to place the piece into a more decorative memorial. He said there is a chance it may be mounted along with a statue or surrounded by a fountain. He said a committee will work on the ideas and will bring them to the city council for approval. “It was a memorable day,” he said about Sept. 11, 2001. “Everyone knows where they were that day and what they were doing before they ran to the nearest TV to see if what was happening was real.”

Rotary donation will get big stage for Rayner Park MASON – A beloved park “adopted” by the city has already had a makeover. Rayner Park will now get a stage to encourage even more use. Rayner Park could have been shelved – a victim of budget cuts through Ingham County, but city officials entered into a lease/ purchase agreement last year, and the city now operates the park in its day-today operations. Since then, the park has had several stewards in the form of community volunteers and service organizations willing to donate time and work to keep the park

attractive. A recent donation from the Mason Rotary Club will try to help boost the park’s attractions with a professional stage. Rotary Club officials recently pledged $10,001 towards construction of the stage, which is estimated to cost $20,000. The initial plans for a 1,152 square foot facility, complete with roof, require further definition and will have to ultimately be approved by a professional architect or engineer. With the suspect identified, the investigation continues. • A Mason resident reported a personal protection order violation after finding a short note in her mailbox she believed was written by her estranged spouse. The complainant also reported finding a suspicious white substance she thought was her ex’s because she had heard he was using drugs. A plastic bag, weighing several pounds, containing white powder and labeled “baking soda (not for baking)” was then turned over to the officer. The bag was seized and secured for later testing. It was found to indeed be baking soda. September 8 - Officers responded to a report of a female down on the lawn near an intersection in a residential neighborhood. The caller told the Dispatch Center the victim claimed to have taken a quantity of pills. Two witnesses at the scene told the officers the victim had told them she had taken the pills but since, had gotten up and walked home. An officer located the residence and the victim, confirming the ingestion of the pills. Family members arrived as the officer requested a medical unit, and the victim was taken to an area medical facility for treatment. • A Mason resident reported finding four hunting knives in their sheaths. They were in front of the complainant’s residence, lying on the ground under a tree in the City right of way. As of this time, the items have not been reported stolen, and the reason for the knives appearing where they did is unknown. September 10 - Officers were flagged down by an employee of an area convenience store and told a patron had just driven away without paying for the gasoline he’d pumped

into his car. The officers, who never lost sight of the car in question, caught up with and stopped it, and advised the driver of what he had done. The driver reported he forgot, while making another purchase, to point out to the cashier he was to pay for gas also. The cashier didn’t catch it either until the driver was leaving. The driver returned to pay the balance owed, and the matter is closed. • An officer responded to a suspicious situation after a Mason resident reported an unknown male suspect had been banging on her door for some time. The complainant stated that when she looked outside, she only saw a paper bag sitting in the driveway. A careful examination of the bag by the officers found human feces. The deviant intent and identity of the suspect are unknown at this time. September 11 - An officer stopped a car on Cedar near Ash for an equipment violation. When the officer made contact with the driver, the overwhelming scent of aerosol was easily detectible. Further investigation found a baggie of marijuana and a marijuana pipe, along with three other baggies containing marijuana residue, inside the vehicle. The driver, who claimed he didn’t smoke marijuana anymore but allowed his friends to do so in his car, showed no indications of being under the influence and was allowed to drive off after being released with citations. • An officer stopped a car for driving without headlamps after dark time hours. The driver claimed the car was borrowed and having no knowledge of how to work the light controls. The driver was also wanted by Ingham County for a probation violation and by Lansing for

failing to appear in court. The problems were compounded by a suspended operator’s license, with a prior conviction. The driver was arrested on the outstanding warrants and lodged in the Ingham County Jail with a citation for the original violation. A copy of the driving while suspended operator’s license, second offense report will be sent to the Prosecutor’s Office for review of charges, so as not to postpone the driver’s appearance on the two warrants. There is also the possibility of another probation violation because of the suspended driving offense, which will be for the presiding jurist to determine. • Officers were dispatched to a local park on a drug complaint. In the park they initiated a traffic stop on the suspect vehicle and found the juvenile female and male occupants in possession of marijuana. The suspects were cited and turned over to their parents. A warrant will be sought against the male for contributing to the delinquency of a minor and for a probation violation. • An officer was dispatched to a barking dog complainant. The caller reported the dogs bark constantly and would like the matter dealt with. While checking the area, a resident made contact with the officer and reported hearing dogs occasionally, but claimed they weren’t his. The officer left to check further when a second call was made from an area resident who reported the person the officer had been talking with was the owner of the disruptive animals. The officer went back, but the suspect would not answer the door. The warning had already been given as a course of conversation during the first visit with Continued on Page 4

the suspect, and the officer noted he would monitor the area. September 12 - A late theft was reported by a resident on Peachtree. The victim stated that a yard ornament, an 18” gray statue of a child holding a basket in one hand and two birds in the other, was taken from the front yard. The victim reported the statue had great personal value, as it was a memorial to her late daughter. If anyone wants to return the statue or knows of its whereabouts, the victim would appreciate its return and will not prosecute. • Officers responded to a domestic argument called in by the estranged couple’s child. The complainant stated that both parents, who were separated, had been staying together the past few days and were arguing over property rights. Because the mother had “gotten physical” in the past, the child thought it best to call the police. The husband reported he

wanted his wife and her property out, but only under his supervision so he could monitor what left the house. he wife stated he threatened to throw her and all her property out into the front yard, which started the argument. As the Missus no longer resides at the address, she left until the matter could be taken up under better circumstances. • Officers received a complaint from a Mason resident of a suspected marijuana operation at a neighborhood residence. There was, and everything seemed to comply with the Michigan Medical Marijuana Act after the officers were provided with a look- see around. The matter is closed. • An officer investigated a domestic dispute and possible child abuse complaint that occurred at a Mason home. The complainant stated that she and the father of her child were former girlfriend and boyfriend and she had recently moved to Mason where she resided with the ex’s

sister. She added that the suspect frequently hangs out at the apartment and two days prior he had became angry at the child for not listening to him and had slapped the child across the back with an open hand, leaving a large red mark, which was evidenced by a cell phone picture taken by the complainant, allegedly of the victim’s back. officials are calling for the resignation of Shirley Rodgers, board leader of the Ingham County Road Commission, in the aftermath of a consultant’s report that found discord at the agency. “If you resign, I think all of these people can work a whole lot better together,” Vince Dragonetti, a Republican county commissioner from Holt, told Rodgers during a commission meeting Tuesday. Rodgers has been at the center of criticism since a Lansing consultant recently found problems at the agency, including a perception by employees that Rodgers improperly micromanaged the staff. Rodgers has responded that she merely has been trying to ensure the commission follows fair hiring practices. Several county

commissioners and township supervisors, including more than a dozen commission employees, attended the meeting to chastise the road board and support two top administrators whose future employment is being reviewed by the board. Last week, the board directed Peter Cohl, the commission’s attorney, to review “employment options” for Tina Henry, finance director, and Jim Benjamin, operations director.

Closed session On Tuesday last week, the board went into closed session to review a “legal opinion” from Cohl, but took no action when it came out of closed session. Both Rodgers and Milton Scales, a board member, declined to say what they had discussed during the closed session. “Those decisions have not yet been made,” Scales said about Henry’s and Bentions, the city council approved a resolution at its last meeting on Sept. 6 to proceed with the construction of the stage.

Knights announces scholarship winners MASON — The Mason Council No. 9182 of the Knights of Columbus has announced the recipients of Knights of Columbus Scholarships in memory of Robbie Stevens. The Knights of Columbus dedicated these scholarship awards to Robbie Stevens who died in a tragic accident in May 2010. The council awarded three scholarships, including a Scholarship Award worth $1,000 and two Book Scholarship Awards worth $400 each. Scholarship applicants had to be 2011 high school graduates, members of St. James Catholic Church, Mason and had to provide an essay discussing their community, church and service activities and their leadership attributes and discuss how their pursuit of higher education will help them achieve their goals.

Casandra Williams was awarded the Scholarship Award and was a graduate of Mason High School. She was an officer in the National Honors Society at Mason High and also served in student government and was an officer in several clubs. In addition, she was the captain of the girls varsity golf team and participated in several community activities that included Habitat for Humanity, Angel House and Adopt-aRiver. Casandra was also involved in the Religious Formation program at St. James and assisted with and taught the second grade class. Ms. Williams has matriculated to High Point University, High Point, N.C., majoring in international business Natasha Schunk is also a graduate of Mason High School and received a Book

Fall Home Improvement Is D-I-Y a recipe for saving money overall? Many homeowners or renters wrestle with the question of whether to tackle a project as a do-it-yourself venture to save some money or simply leave it to a professional. Each situation is unique, but there are certain factors that must be considered regardless of a homeowner’s particular situation. On the surface, a DIY task can seem a very good way to save some money. After all, a large percentage, sometimes as much as 50 percent, of the cost of hiring a contractor goes toward labor. For a DIY job with no such costs, the final financial tally can be substantially less. Although labor can be expensive, that cost is often justified. People who hire carpenters, electricians, plumbers, and the like are paying for the workers’ experience. They’re also paying with the expectation that the job will be done correctly. With jobs that require a building permit or must be done to specific code, the contractor often puts his reputation on the line and will be held

While it’s easy to go online and scour message boards for pointers on certain tasks, not all of the information is accurate. Trust only content from sources that are licensed or backed by certification in a certain area. These things being said, there are a number of DIY projects that

regular people can try. Starting off small and building up as skills are developed are good ways to begin. For example: • Tile a small kitchen backsplash before tackling an entire bathroom shower enclosure or floor. • Build an outdoor potting stand before attempting furniture or cabinetry work in a main room of the house. • Change out a ceiling fan or lighting fixture before re-running electrical lines through the home. • Succeed in repairing a leaky drain pipe before taking on a more advanced plumbing issue. • Use regular painting techniques first before experimenting with a trendy faux finish or plaster application. There are many different things individuals can do themselves that stretch beyond routine home maintenance. From manicures to pool upkeep, the potential to save money when budgets are tight can be a powerful motivator.

Ways to ready your home to withstand harsh winter weather insulation. Such joists won’t be visible in an adequately insulated attic. Put up the storm windows. It’s nice to open the windows in the spring and summer and let the warm air waft in through the screens. But when summer is over, it’s time to put up the storm windows once again. Storm windows add an extra layer of protection from the elements and are especially valuable in homes with single-pane glass windows. Homeowners who don’t have storm windows should consider upgrading their existing windows. Such a project isn’t cheap, but newer windows will almost certainly lead to lower heating costs, meaning the project will essentially pay for itself over time. Homeowners who can’t afford to replace all of their windows don’t have to replace them all at once. Instead, replace them a few at a time and make the

rooms where you spend the most time each winter the first on the list to receive new windows. Be diligent with the gutters. Leaves falling from trees is an idyllic image associated primarily with autumn. Unfortunately, when leaves fall they often fall into the gutters. Routinely clean the gutters once the leaves start to fall. Clean gutters will allow snow and rain to effectively drain through the gutters. If the gutters are clogged, snow might have nowhere to go when it begins to melt, and roof damage might result. Such damage is costly but preventable in most instances. One of the easier preventive measures to take is to routinely clean the gutters of leaves and other debris that accumulate during the fall. When cleaning the gutters, make sure they are properly aligned. Poorly aligned gutters can lead to a host of problems.

One such problem is flooding. If downspouts are not properly aligned with the rest of the gutters, then water might not be directed away from the home as it’s intended. Mason Age 6, lost her courageous battle with cancer on Tuesday, September 6, 2011. Lillie was employed as a shift supervisor at Dart Container since 1976. She enjoyed traveling, camping, bowling and any activity that involved spending time with family and friends. She is survived by her loving husband of 48 years, John L. Selby; sons, John Jr. (Jamie) and Randall (Colleen); daughter, Angela (LeRoy) Nestell; grandchildren, Mallory, April, Mitchell, Ronnie, Mickey, Billy, Jordan, Samantha, Nicholas, Christopher, Maxwell and Zachary; great grandchildren, Mark and Logan; sisters, Anna (Steve) Wheat, Hilda (Larry) Brown and Linda (Gary) Bouts. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews and friends. Lillie was preceded in death by her parents, Carmon and Gladys Vincent; brother, JC, Carmon Jr., Finis and David. Funeral Services will be held, Saturday, September 10, 2011, 1:00 p.m. at the Palmer, Bush & Jensen Family Funeral Home, Holt Chapel with Pastor Wesley Emerson officiating. Along with her love for dogs she also loved to travel, going to Alaska for her 50th anniversary and enjoying fall tour trips. She appreciated art and visited many art festivals and museums. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dr. Donald A. Cairns; sister, Eleanor Bennett. Surviving are daughters, Patricia C. (Jeffery) Ealy and Laura J. (Chuck) Crest; sons, Robert R. (Jeri) Cairns and Donald A. Cairns; grandchildren, Matthew Ealy, Lisa Ealy, Connor Cairns and Eveland Cairns; and sister, Kay (Arthur) Dahlgren. PORTLAND – After starting out with two impressive CMAC football wins, Dansville’s season hit a speed bump with a 41-28 loss at Portland St. Patrick on Sept. 10. While the Aggie offense scored four touchdowns and gained 316 yards of total offense in the game, they turned the ball over six times in the game, starting with their first two possessions. The defense held after the first, a fumble on Dansville’s second snap of the game, but the second cost them when the Shamrocks picked off a Garret Soule pass and returned it to the Aggie 30 yard line. Two plays later, St. Pats scored on a 19-yard touchdown pass to put Dansville behind 7-0 with 4:28 left in the first quarter. The Aggies responded with a 12-play, 59-yard scoring drive, capped off by a 6-yard TD pass from Soule to Joe Parsons on the first

play of the second quarter, but the missed extra point kept Dansville trailing, 7-6. Yet another interception led to the Shamrocks’ next score, after St. Pats returned the pick to the Dansville 1-yard line and ran it in two plays later to stretch their lead to 14-6 with 7:58 left in the first half. The Aggies fought back on their next possession, an 8-play, 55-yard drive which ended with a 3-yard TD pass from Soule to Jesse Patterson, and a two-point conversion pass to Austin Hamilton, that tied the game at 14-14. St. Pats scored late in the second quarter, on a 45-yard TD pass with 1:04 left in the half to take a 21-14 lead at the break. The Aggies went further behind on a 20-yard St. Pats TD pass that made the score 27-14 with 6:16 left in the third quarter, but Dansville got back into the game with a 3-yard TD plunge by Parsons that closed the gap to 27-21 with 2:58 left in the third.
