Mason firms to make major expansions Council approves 50 percent tax breaks Will Kangas wkangas@lsj.com
MASON – Two local manufacturers are planning to spend millions to expand, and were supported by the Mason City Council through the approval of tax breaks Gestamp, Mason, one of the recipients of a 12-year, 50 percent property tax break, is expecting an increase in sales from $50 million in 2010 to $115 million in 2013 based on projected sales orders. The company manufactures hardened steel beams for car doors and impact beams for bumpers. To do the work, company officials say they need more floor space and will spend $38 million
on two building expansions. In the end, the expansion is expected to create 110 new jobs within two years of completion, adding to the existing 330 employees at its facility at 200 E. Kipp Rd. Companies can apply for 50 percent tax exemption with local municipalities for up to 12 years through an Industrial Facilities Tax Exception Certificate. They usually apply when they make a large investment or expansion.

But with grant money that can help pay for up to 70 percent of repairs, those spaces can quickly become living spaces, and the result is good for everyone involved, according to Mason City Manger Martin Colburn. receiving a call from a man with a heavy Mediterranean accent, claiming she had won a million dollars and all she needed to do was purchase a prepaid credit card for $499. The intended victim knew a scam was being perpetrated and told the caller she was too busy to speak and would call back. At her request, the caller told the complainant his name was Tom Green and gave his number. • Officers were dispatched to a residence after receiving a call from 55th District Court Probation that a probationer was at that address with his girlfriend—a violation of his “no contact” order subsequent to a domestic violence case. Officers were told the suspect was hiding in the basement and patiently stood at the top of the stairs, calling for the suspect to surrender himself. The suspect eventually did—covered in dust picked up from his place of concealment—and was taken to the 55th district Court for immediate arraignment on his probation violation. September 16 - Officers responded to a fight call near the 600 block of Peachtree Place. They arrived and found nothing suspicious, but then focused on an address where frequent domestic’s are reported. They found the male resident alone and the female reportedly gone, having taken her children with her. In spite of the premises being in disarray, with items appearing to have been thrown about, the male stated no assault had occurred, but the female resident—whom he claimed was intoxicated— had become very angry at his calling her a whore. He stated he then ordered the woman out, after which she left with her children. An attempt to locate the woman, who was pur-
portedly intoxicated and driving with her three children, was to no avail. The next day the woman called the Police Department, responding to a voice mail left for her, and reported she and the children were safe. She contended the male became angry and threw an ashtray through the kitchen wall. She also admitted to having tried to induce him into striking her to facilitate another domestic assault charge so she could have him arrested; however, he would not cooperate. September 17 - Officers responded to a 911 hang-up call originating from the same block as the prior evening’s domestic complaint. The first officer arrived and began checking around the buildings for activity, finding a male hiding behind a shrubbery, apparently attempting— without much luck—to conceal himself—and another male’s body sticking halfway out a window at the first male’s feet. Being suspicious he might have interrupted a burglary in progress or some other criminal act, the officer ordered the pair into prone positions to keep them secure until his backup arrived. As he waited, he observed a third suspect begin crawling out the same window, causing him to detain that person similarly to the first two. When the second officer arrived and the three were being separated to determine what was going on, the resident of the premises came outside to find out what the disturbance was about, only to find his son and two friends in the custody of the police. It was explained by the three escapists that they were trying to sneak out of the house undetected when the officer showed up. Dad agreed to take the three into the premises and to See POLICE, Page 4

take the two house guests home to their parents. • An officer was dispatched to an area store where it was reported a 9 year old was asking customers for money and requesting a job from a store employee. The officer found the youngster in the store office enjoying an ice cream cone. He reported his parents hated him because he had thrown a toy, but soon clarified they didn’t hate him, but the way he acted. He was upset at being disciplined for his actions—not because his parents failed to love him. The officer drove him home and soon was able to rejoin him with his parents—who had just come in from being out looking for him. The officer turned the child over and provided detailed information regarding a program the Department operates which keeps information on persons with special needs so that officers coming across them, for whatever reason,
can more easily identify them and be acquainted with issues of importance concerning how they will react to contacts with the police. A residential burglary was reported after someone forced entry through the service door of a garage. The door was pried open, entry gained, and property removed. Taken were a wheelbarrow, a push mower, a charcoal grill, a mole trap, and a box of nails and screws. Anyone having information on this theft is asked to contact the MPD. September 19 - An officer was dispatched to an area school where the parents of a student were protesting the removal of their child into the custody of Child Protective Services. The original complaint involved an incident a week prior where the mother accused the father of excessive discipline, filing a complaint with a
Mason Police Officer. As is the procedure, a copy of the report was sent to CPS, whose agent was now practicing due diligence. It was the CPS caseworker’s intent to place the child in a safe haven during the investigation; however, because the mother was present and acted as the child’s advocate in the complaint, CPS agreed to leave the child at home during the rest of the investigation—which remains open.

• An officer received a hit-and-run accident report at a Mason apartment complex. The complainant reported the driver of a pickup truck pulled into
the lot next to the dumpster and began picking for trash. He stated he saw the suspect overload the pickup bed and then try to drive through a carport. The roof clearance was lower than the pile of junk, and the truck struck the carport, damaging the roof. The complainant then reported the driver got out, reloaded the truck, and drove off. There were enough witnesses that the driver and truck were identified, leading the officer to a neighborhood south of the city. The truck and driver were located. The driver admitted to his deed, and the officer also found the man

Contact with the driver and further investigation resulted in the officer discovering a poorly-contrived, concealed compartment in the trim and headliner inside the vehicle. The results were the discovery of a small amount of marijuana, a cigar cutter, and cigars—the tool and ingredients for manufacturing blunts. The driver reported he was not a medical marijuana user. After the contraband was seized and it was determined he was not under the influence, the man was released with citations for the traffic
offense and possession of marijuana. • A bicycle was reported stolen from the 500 block of Peachtree Place. ******* SPECIAL NOTICE: With schools now in session, many Mason children will be walking to and from. Crossing Guards are asking Mason motorists to be aware of the crossings and exercise extra caution while driving through town during the hours just before school, noon time, and just after school hours. Please remember: a crossing guard’s sign and presence in the intersection has all the authority of any other traffic control device, and violating the direction to stop is a traffic misdemeanor under Uniform Traffic Citation Code 257.613D and can likely lead to a traffic
infraction—with a fine of $140 and 3 points added to the violator’s driver’s license. However, first and foremost in importance is the safety of our community’s children.\ The MPD is currently seeking an additional fulltime crossing guard and substitute guards. popular in Mason that the city was used as a model for MSHDA’s video to explain the program throughout the state, and can be found on the City of Mason’s website. The program calls for property owners to fund at least 25 percent of the project cost, but the benefits are increased activity in the downtown area, which in turn leads to increased revenue for downtown property owners and a productive use of space. In order to get the loan, Ghinelli and other applicants had to make sure the project was “ready to go” with financing in place. Not all buildings qualify, as the building has to be considered to be in a “Main Street” community like Mason and preserve the historic character of the building.

The program is facilitated through the Ingham County Housing Commission, via the Michigan State Housing Development Authority. Pub size doubles Will Kangas wkangas@lsj.com
MASON – One of Mason’s popular pubs has doubled in size and is close to opening the expansion soon. “We are 99 percent there,” Mason Courthouse Pub and Grill Co-owner Joe Ghinelli said. “A few more adjustments to clear inspections and we will be seating people in there.” Ghinelli said bringing the 150-year old building up to code wasn’t easy, but after buying the property next door and then opening a connection between the two inside the pub, it adds 1,300 square feet. “It’s a full expansion,” he said. “Larger eating area, dance floor, and pool table.” He said he is excited about
making the kitchen are five times larger and expanding the menu to add at least 15 more items. “We are going to roll them out gradually,” he said. “We’ll still have our favorites.” The pub has been owned by life-long Mason residents Ghinelli and Cliff Walkington for three years this October. Ghinelli said the expansion is a way to meet a need for larger groups. “Sometimes we would be so crowded that larger groups would look in and have to go somewhere else,” he said. “That bothered me.” The expansion will help the pub carry 146 people instead of the previous 55 maximum seating capacity.

Road mgr. demoted
Erhard Dental and Implant Center
The Original ONE DAY DENTURE SERVICE
Scott Davis sdavis@lsj.com
A top manager at the Ingham County Road Commission has been demoted in the wake of a controversial consultant’s report that found discord at the agency. On Monday, Sept. 19 the commission board voted to demote Jim Benjamin, operations director, to a position equivalent to that of a mechanic or road worker, said Bill Conklin, managing director. Conklin did not recommend the demotion. However, the board also agreed to delay implementing the demotion until it could discuss how it should be done with Peter Cohl, a commission attorney. Board members did not publicly discuss their reasons for demoting Benjamin, a 24-year employee. However, they convened in closed session last week to discuss undisclosed employment issues. “The board hasn’t shared with me their reasoning for taking this action,” Benjamin said.
“I stand behind any and all actions that I have taken since becoming director of operations.” A recent consultant’s report found problems at the agency, including a culture of favoritism and distrust between managers and employees. However, employees have since widely criticized the report as misleading, saying the distrust actually exists between board members and employees. Benjamin has been director of operations since March 2009. Under the county system, Benjamin, 50, is five years away from being eligible for retirement. Earlier this month, the board also directed Cohl to review the “employment status” of Tina Henry, finance director. The board has not yet taken action related to Henry’s employment. Conklin’s contract with the board expires Jan. 14, 2012. The board has not yet taken action on whether to renew his contract beyond that date.

Ahoy! Good day to ye, maties. Although it’s not a holiday everyone marks on their calendars, International Talk Like a Pirate Day is held every year on Sept. 19. The reason is that talking like a pirate is lots of fun! At the Dansville Library, we held a Talk Like a Pirate Party for area children. They had a great time learning how to “swab the deck,” “batten down the hatches” and “walk the plank.” Our special guests were Captain Tigerlily and the crew of the Crimson Reign. Captain Tigerlily, aka Jessica Masserant, is an English teacher and theater manager at Fowlerville High School. She is part of a pirate performance group called Brethren of the Great Lakes, who perform all over Michigan and run

The program began with rowing from land and climbing aboard the ship. Then participants were initiated as new crew members in three easy steps: Making a scary pirate face, adopting a confident pirate stance and saying “Arrrrrr!” Abby, age 5, told us that she enjoyed singing the interactive pirate songs. Ryan, age 6, and Coen, age 3, both liked the Pirate Pete stories best. They thought the puppets were funny. All of the children enjoyed learning some pirate lingo and taking home a piece of booty.

MASON — Mason-based singer-songwriter Grant Woell is going places — fast. This year has brought him gigs all over the country, plus a new album produced by Skillet lead guitarist Ben Kasica. All of the hard work is in addition to Woell’s busy schedule as a high school senior. Woell, who opens for He Is We at Mac’s in Lansing next Tuesday, talks about working with Kasica on the new album and his feel-good brand of poprock.

Questions and Answers Erickson: How has your music progressed this year? Woell: We’ll, it’s been a crazy year. I’ve really been all over — Florida, Nashville, Wisconsin, and Nebraska — writing and recording my new album. God’s really blessed me in the past couple months with putting the right producers and managers in my life. Ninety percent of the new record was recorded during the school year last year, so it was really weird for me to fly to Florida for a week or go to Wisconsin for a weekend, meet amazing people like Ben Kasica (lead guitarist of Skillet), to write and record a song or two and then be back in school the next day, doing high school stuff. Erickson: You’ve worked with both Ben Kasica of Skillet and Philip Zach of Remedy Drive. That’s awesome! What was the experience like? Woell: It was incredible! I’ve grown up listening to both of those bands, so it’s really surreal for me to be able to co-write songs with them and have them produce me. Both guys
are incredibly humble and have really become mentors for me. Erickson: Tell me about your upcoming album, “All of Me,” which comes out Sept. 27. Woell: I spent the last six months traveling around working with different producers on the songs. The album was recorded in Florida, Wisconsin and Nebraska. One of the cool things is that it will not only be on iTunes, but the whole album will also be free on my website … I didn’t want there to be any barriers between fans and my music. Erickson: You’re playing with He Is We on Tuesday at Mac’s, and you also played with them at Mac’s last year. Are you excited? Woell: Yes, I had a blast last year, and it’s such a blessing to be able to play a show with them again. I’m a big fan of their music. • Show details: He Is We, Grant Woell, Rival Summers, 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27, Mac’s Bar, 2700 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing, 484-6795, tickets $12 available via Fusion Shows at fusionshows.com.

Junior Tanner Hinkle broke his father Dave’s 21-year-old school record by 23 seconds while finishing runner-up in 15 minutes, 23 seconds, and Mason’s top five runners each ran 16:47 or faster. That enabled the Bulldogs to compile 189 points, trailing only Division 3 No. 1 Grandville Calvin Christian’s 172 and

Bulldogs chalk up key 2-1 win over talented Okemos Soccer team one of area’s finest Scott Yoshonis syoshonis@lsj.com
OKEMOS - Josh Rudd scored both goals to help Mason claim another highprofile non-league victory with a 2-1 win at Okemos on Sept. 17. With the win, the Bulldogs can make a strong case for being the best team in the area, having run a schedule that includes virtually every other possible claimant without a loss. Mason’s two ties were with Lansing Catholic and St. Johns, and they have beaten Holt, East Lansing, Eaton Rapids and now the Chieftains. The Bulldogs are also the top-ranked Division 2 team in the state in the latest statewide coaches poll. Mason coach Nick Binder stops short of making that argument based in this win, however. “That’s your job,” Binder said. “We’ve tied two teams in the area, so they have a stake in that as well. Okemos is a good team, and if they get one more bounce, it’s a 2-2 game.” The Bulldogs got the first fortunate bounce in a game that looked like it was going to be a shootout early, as all three goals were scored in the first nine minutes of the contest. Mason opened the scoring just 1:21 into the game when an Okemos pass in the back caromed off of the referee and fell to Rudd near the left-wing corner of the box. His right-footed shot found the back of the net to give his team a 1-0 lead. Okemos tied the game less than two minutes later
from a free kick just outside the Mason box on the left-wing side. Josh Robison’s cross to the near post was headed home by Carson Covell to make the score 1-1 with 36:41 left in the first half. Mason took the lead right back, when Okemos goalkeeper Landon Collier came off his line to slide and cut out a through ball to the onrushing Bobby Albert. The ball again found Rudd, who rolled it into the open net from 25 yards out to make the score 2-1 with 31 minutes left in the half. While Mason continued to dominate possession for the bulk of the half, they created few scoring chances, and the half
ended 2-1. “We got a little flatfooted and lost our composure a little bit in the first half,” Okemos coach Brian Guggemos said. “When you give up two goals in the first ten minutes, it makes it really difficult.” The Chieftains took the game over immediately after the break, holding possession in the Mason end of the field for extended periods, and creating several dangerous chances on set pieces as a result. None of them found the net, however, and the Bulldogs kept Okemos in their own half most of the rest of the game . While Mason/Okemos may be the fiercest purely soccer rivalry in the area,
Mason defenders Nick McNeilly (left) and Kyle Pier (right) in action during the Bulldogs’ 2-1 victory at Okemos on Sept. 17. The prestigious win keeps the Bulldogs unbeaten in an area full of taleted teams. This coming week, the Mason soccer team looks to win its 10th straight league titlte. SCOTT YOSHONIS/LCN
Binder said that history didn’t matter in this game. “It’s big for us because of the way we played and the way we won,” Binder said. “Okemos is as good a team as we’ve seen in the area, and we accomplished what we wanted to accomplish, besides the score.” But a bad bit of history has reared its ugly head, as forward Tyler Raab has sustained a broken foot,
and will miss 4-5 weeks. The Bulldogs then improved to 12-0-2 overall and 3-0 in CAAC Gold play with a 4-1 win over Jackson Lumen Christi on Sept. 19. Peter Brandenburg scored two goals, and Rudd and Zac Perleberg had the others against the Titans. Rudd, Nick McNeilly and Jose Ortiz collected assists in the game. This week, the Bulldogs
will finish their league schedule, and look to clinch their tenth consecutive league championship, when they travel to Charlotte on Monday, Sept. 26 and return home to face Jackson Northwest on Wednesday, Sept. 28. Mason would clinch a share of the title with a win in one of those games, and claim the league title outright by winning both.
