ONONDAGA TWP. – A battle over the reopening of a local dragstrip continues as two Onondaga Township elected officials face a recall question on the Nov. 8 ballot. Township Clerk Diane Johnson and Treasurer Mary Jane Hector’s fate will be in voters’ hands after a group opposing the dragstrip accumulated enough signatures to put the recall question on the ballot. Trustee James Tow was also a

target for recall, but not enough signatures on the recall petition against Tow’s were validated. “It was close for us as well,” Johnson said of the number of valid signatures needed for her and Hector. She said Hector made the ballot by only four. “But the point is the people that were collecting signatures were telling untruths,” Hector said. Hector said her neighbor signed it because he thought she was against the dragstrip when in fact she is for it. A fight over the re-opening of the dragstrip began more than and a half ago. MASON POLICE CRIME REPORT John Stressman Mason Police Chief

Between October 18th and October 24th Mason police investigated 62 reported incidents involving a variety of activities—both criminal and noncriminal. These are some of those incidents worth noting and intended to keep our citizens informed of Department activities.

October 18 – An officer was requested to assist with a disruptive student at a school on Hagadorn Road. The complainant called to report the student was told to leave after repeatedly disrupting class and was now walking about, kicking classroom doors and disrupting the entire facility. The officer arrived and crossed paths with the suspect as he was leaving the building. The officer asked the suspect to stop and talk, but received a profanitylaced explanation of why the student was leaving the building. The officer explained the current conduct being displayed more than qualified the student to be subjected to an arrest, after which cooperation was gained. With the complainant not wanting to prosecute, and the student willing to depart the premises, the matter was closed. • A Mason resident reported a 16-year-old daughter had run away and the resident wished to make a police report. The complainant stated this was a repeated act and the youth had become incorrigible. Family members were able to determine the runaway had called a shelter for help and was currently in their care. The girl’s location and safety were confirmed by the officer calling the organization, a credible agency located in Lansing. The youth cannot be reported as a runaway in the State data base. The

police report has been completed and closed. • A report of a homeless man trying to solicit rides in the downtown area was received. The man was located near Ash and Jefferson. He turned down transportation to a shelter and reported he did have lodgings at a nearby facility, had money in his pocket, and had recently eaten. The man was neither creating a disturbance nor breaking any laws and was allowed to go on his way. • Officers were dispatched to the area of Kipp and Jewett Roads for a fight. When officers arrived, they found a couple outside of a parked car and a teenager sitting inside the vehicle. Investigation uncovered the couple—parents of the teenager—had gone to pick their child up after the youth had not returned home in a timely fashion. While on the way home, the three got into an argument and when the car was pulled over to the side of the road, the youth exited and ran off towards 127. It was while the child was being escorted back to the car that the passerby must have perceived it was a fight and made the call. There was no fight, no assault, and the remainder of the issue was a family matter, so the incident was closed.

October 19 – Officers responded to two incidents involving the same suspect—one after the other. It started when a neighbor called to report the suspect acting strangely and responding officers arrived to find him in the process of moving out of his apartment. Shortly afterwards, an officer was called to an area service station where a customer tried to pay for gasoline with a credit card which was declined. The customer reportedly said he would return later to pay, but refused to give any of his personal information and ran out of the store. The suspect did leave behind his license plate number, which the clerk copied down as the suspect fled the parking lot in his car. The officer, recognizing the name from the previous call, went to the suspect’s home but could not get an answer at the door. The officer called the suspect’s phone but was hung up on when he identified himself to the suspect. On subsequent call attempts, the line was opened and the only thing the officer could hear was a male with a phony Asian accent cursing at him and claiming he was “harassing a citizen.” A copy of the report will be submitted to the Prosecutor’s Office for review of theft charges.

The female suspect identified herself using her sister’s name for fear of being arrested for an outstanding Lansing Township warrant. The male suspect was not arrested because of his cooperation. The female— not so lucky—was taken to the Ingham County Jail and lodged on the warrant. In addition, she was issued an appearance citation for false identification to obstruct police. A copy of the report will be submitted to the Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office for review of charges on both suspects. • The Department investigator received a complaint from the Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office regarding the stalking of a domestic assault victim. The Assistant Prosecutor reported the information came out, while the victim was being interviewed, that the suspect had been systematically stalking the victim prior to the assault. The victim stated she met the suspect through an on-line dating service and continued a relationship until the suspect became too serious and expressed extreme jealousy over her close friendship with a male coworker. She reported the suspect went so far as to cut her initials into each of his forearms—showing her the still bleeding evidence—while trying to express his love. Other patterns of what is best described as “extreme behavior” were also reported to the investigator, who will submit the completed investigation to the Prosecutor’s Office for review of additional charges.

October 20 – The code enforcement officer initiated nuisance complaints involving a junk pile at a residence in the 500 block of West South Street, a dangerous tree at risk of falling onto a neighboring outbuilding in the 500 block of West Maple, and a large brush pile and scattered junk in the 500 block of East Columbia Street. On the West South Street complaint, this is the second contact with the property owner after the first failed to gain compliance. A letter has been sent requesting the nuisance be abated. Follow-up action could lead to a citation for violating the City’s nuisance ordinances. • An officer responded to a complaint of a panhandler soliciting money from business patrons outside a North Cedar Street eating establishment. Although the suspect was gone prior to the officer’s arrival, the physical description matched that of a homeless man from Lansing who has recently been freed from jail, but remains hanging about Mason. October 21 -- An officer stopped a car on South Cedar Street after it was seen driving through a parking lot of an area church around 2:00 a.m. Once the car was stopped, the officer was able to determine the driver was reportedly on the way home from a movie; was using the parking lot as a shortcut—rather than using the streets for travel; was suspended; his car was not properly registered; nor did he have insurance. The driver was issued multiple citations and taken home after the car was impounded. • Officers answered a call in reference to an intoxicated, disorderly female yelling obscenities while walking on Maple See REPORT, Page 4

MASON — The Mason City Council has approved two separate repairs dealing with water problems. One city wells has been shut down since July because a test came back to show that there was the presence of bacteria. City Manager Marty Colburn said staff tried three times using different methods to chlorinate the Park Street but failed to pass tests for cleanliness. Colburn stressed the bacteria found would not present a danger to city water users. “This isn’t bacteria that resembles E. Coli or any of the more infamous types,” he said.

City staff had an evaluation done by Water Systems Engineering, Inc. to determine where the bacteria was coming from and to make a determination if the well was being contaminated from surface water or if it something in the well bore. Colburn said the report states the bacteria growth is from sediment in the well bore, and there are sections of the screen that are plugged and growing bacteria. The report also gave suggestions of how to remedy the problem, which would require a professional process. Three contractors were contacted to get quotes for this cleaning process and the bids came back on Oct. 7.

The low quote came in at $3,745 as submitted by Layne Christensen Company, Colburn said. The other quotes were much higher at $7,499.69 and $13,250. “That’s because some of the companies would have to lease special equipment to do the job,” Colburn said. “That increases the price.” The Mason City Council also approved repairs for the storm drain in front of the city library. The cost, done “in-house” with help from a construction company, will cost $12,735. Colburn said the drain has been a problem in the past, especially during heavy storms. The water would not drain and cause flooding in the library basement.

Street at 3:20 a.m. When the officers arrived, the complainant reported that shortly after she called, a white SUV stopped, picked up the female, and sped off. A check of the area proved negative, and the matter was closed. • The theft of two LCD projectors from a building in downtown Mason was reported. The white Epson PJ12 Powerlites—valued at $600 each— were taken from a conference room where they had been mounted onto the ceiling. • While closing Rayner Park for the night, an officer spotted a parked vehicle with steamed-over windows. A closer investigation found a nude couple in the back seat. The officer directed the pair to clothe and then exit the vehicle. Upon determining both were of age and present of their own volition, they were released with citations for being in the park after hours, a violation of the City ordinance.

October 23 – A malicious destruction of property was reported in the 400 block of West South Street. The victim directed the officer’s attention to a number of indentations in the siding on his home and a chipped window. It appeared the damage may have been caused by BB’s striking the dwelling, although none were located. The officer conducted interviews in the area, but no evidence as to suspects could be garnered. October 24 – An officer was dispatched to a Mason neighborhood for a report of a suspect breaking out a car window. Prior to the officer’s arrival, the caller reported the suspect had gained entry and was leaving. The officer began looking for the car and found one, occupied, matching the description, with a back door window broken out. Investigation found the car belonged to the driver—who had just been released from jail and had to break a window to gain entry to his vehicle

because the keys were locked inside. The driver, who admitted that his conduct would seem suspicious, was released. No other cars were found to be damaged. Crash Reports: Officers investigated 2 on-street accidents, 1 private property accident, 1 car/deer accident, and 1 hit-and-run crash. Autumn Pops features local talent OKEMOS — The annual Autumn Pops concert, sponsored by the Greater Lansing Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, will be held at The Presbyterian Church of Okemos, Bennett and Okemos Road, on Sunday, Nov. 6 at 3 p.m. Even though the Organ Guild sponsors this event, it is not an organ recital. It features several very talented local musicians, solos and groups, who will perform a blend of pop, classical and jazz on a variety of instruments, including

voice and organ. Home baked cookies, with coffee and cider, will be available for your pleasure following the approximately one hour concert. This event is free and open to the public, however, there will be a free-will offering collected to benefit the chapter’s scholarship fund. Auditions are held each spring for interested organ students of any age. The Greater Lansing Chapter has been privileged to be able to grant scholarships

each year for the past 25+ years. This concert is the guild’s sole fund-raiser of the year. For the past five years we have been very grateful to the musicians who volunteer their time to this effort, and to the concert goers who have been very generous with their donations. Costly election Johnson said simply forcing an election on an off year will cost Onondaga Township thousands of dollars. “Because I am the clerk, I can’t run this election,” she said. “But it will still cost us.” Johnson said there will be an election when her term expires in a year, so this special election seems to be a waste of township funds. Because the election is being run by the Aurelius Township Clerk, the cost is expected to be more than $5,000, Johnson said. But Klein argued “they could do a lot of damage in a year,” and said no matter what the result, his group intends to continue litigation in circuit court. Hector said she has faith. “This isn’t a very big township, and we have faith in people to stick with us,” Hector said. “We hope people will realize that they were told lies by a small group of people that want to run the township.”

Initially, the township planning commission recommended approval of the permit, but the commission recommended a dential of the special use permit the second time it came up as opposition to the dragstrip grew. When the township board voted on the special use for the dragstrip, Johnson and Hector went against the planning commision’s recommendation and voted to approve the permit and allow the dragstrip to open. It is a sad, sad time when three good people have to suffer the stress of a recall simply for doing their jobs. The Vevay Township recall is not only completely without merit, it is hurtful to the individuals, their family and friends and to the community. When have we given up our personal obligations to be respectful and polite and to agree to disagree without being disagreeable? The county elections clerk told me that “you don’t have to allege any wrong-doing on a recall, you just have to make the language clear.” I leave it to your own intelligent selves to see the craziness of that policy. One of the jobs of any civic official is to enforce the laws, which apply — note that I said, “enforce.”

Any law enforcement officer will tell you that they don’t make the laws, but they sure do have to enforce them. Clerk Jo Anne Kean, Trustee Dale Ruttan and Ron Weesies, my long-time neighbor, retired police officer and the Vevay Township supervisor, are all being recalled for doing their jobs too well. Ron Weesies invites you to contact him about any of the stories being circulated. (Seriously, can you believe that Doug Shaw was trying to circumvent the fire code regarding his haunted barn — and he is a Vevay Township trustee!) For those of you who don’t know Ron well, I have a story to tell about him. Twenty-five years ago, my young daughter and I were riding our horses on a quiet rural road about a mile from our house when we were approached by a man who said inappropriate and threatening things to us

while walking alongside. It was frightening. I had the police out, but I did not have the license plate number. I contacted Ron, who had two little girls, and the other neighbors with children as well. Ron at this time was an Ingham County deputy working as a police officer at MSU. During his off-duty time, he made it his job to keep the kids safe and kept his eyes out for this predator. He finally spotted the guy, was able get his vehicle in front of him and stopped his vehicle to force the guy to stop. This led to a photo line up, a trial and conviction and this guy is now on the sex offender list as a result of Ron’s tenacity. That’s the kind of guy that he is. Pretty cool, huh? If you signed a recall petition and are now regretting it, I have the answer on how to take your name off, thanks to my son in law. Greg Shaw, who came to his

Father to tell of tragedy, comfort in organ donations INGHAM COUNTY — The Transplant Support Group/Lansing Area will host the father of a 7-year-old girl who was fatally shot. He will tell the story of his decision to donate his daughter’s organs. The meeting will take place 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 10, in the chapel of Peoples Church, 200 W. Grand River, East Lansing, John Edmond, a passionate advocate of organ donation, will

describe Amaia’s Legacy. Amaia Edmond, a 7-year-old girl, was died on July 23, 2010. On the day that Amaia died at the hospital, John decided to donate her organs. Five people were saved through the donation of Amaia’s organs, and the family has heard from several recipient families. Edmond said his family have felt very comforted by the good coming out of Amaia’s death and the knowledge that other lives

The Howard Cemetery is a small inactive cemetery in Ingham Township. Burials date back to early 1800. This cemetery has many of the first pioneer families that cleared and settled the area resting there. There are three generations of my immediate family buried there along with many other relatives. The cemetery was cared for by my family for many years through five generations from 1890 to 1985. In 1985 it was necessary to request the township to take over the care. They have kept it mowed for those past 26 years. However, the overall care has not been done. The trees and bushes were overgrown and the fence has all but disappeared. Many of the monuments are overgrown with bushes. There is a very large dead tree at the back of the cemetery that needs to be removed. Students from the high school started a clean up a few weeks ago. They removed brush and did some trimming. Which made the appearance of the grounds much improved. On Oct. 16, Scout Troop 21 from the

area came in with several of the parents and finished the job. They cut overhanging tree limbs, cleared bushes from around the tombstones and even straighten several of these stones. Monuments that had been completely covered with bushes are now fully visible. They trimmed in a manner that the plants now will resemble the original plantings around the stones. These young people expressed interest in continuing this with projects for the future. I and my family wish to thank these young people and their parents for this. These scouts showed great respect and interest in this project. They were well mannered and pleasant to work with. This is so refreshing to see children with those values today. Library Mascot celebrated Leslie’s 175th birthday “L

ook! It’s the library kitty!” That’s a comment we heard a lot on Sept. 24, as Linc the Library Lynx marched past cheering crowds gathered to watch the parade. Our popular Capital Area District Library mascot was there to help celebrate the 175th anniversary of the settling of the Leslie area. He even dressed for the occasion, donning a pioneer coonskin cap and brown leather vest over his light blue fur. “He looks good!” said Samantha Smith, age 6, of Leslie. A regular visitor to the Leslie Library, she had stopped by after the parade to meet Linc and have her picture taken with him. Smith was one of a large crowd who gathered there, admiring Linc’s outfit and enjoying the free giveaways he’d brought to share. Inside the library, a wealth of information awaited visitors. Second wind The Bulldogs found their second wind, however, and created two good chances in a row, both started by Raab. First, he sent Rudd in clean on goal with about 17 minutes left in the game, but Dexter keeper Mike McGonagall went down to just turn the shot around the post by his fingertips. Raab, then found Bill Wilson making a run on the left wing, and hit him in stride in the Dexter box, but Wilson’s right-footed shot went inches wide of the far post with about 14 minutes left. Mason finally got their insurance goal with 8:25 left in the game, on a corner kick taken by Brandenburg. Wilson’s far-post header went back across the face of goal, where Pease poked it past McGonagall to make the final score 2-0. “They’re a quality team, and deserved to win on the day,” Dexter coach Scott Forrester said. “This is not where we usually end up, so it’s a little disappointing, but if you look where we were at the start of the season, we’re proud of our efforts.”

Regional game That district win sent Mason into a regional semifinal rematch against Plainwell. The Bulldogs were knocked out by

the Trojans in their last appearance in the Division 2 regionals in 2009. The weather got in the way on Oct. 25, when the regional semifinal was scheduled. After the first semi, in which Mattawan defeated Tecumseh 2-1, and less than three minutes into their game against Plainwell, a lightning storm moved into the Battle Creek area, forcing the game to be postponed until the next day. When play resumed on Oct. 26, Pease scored the game’s lone goal off a corner kick with 7:46 left in the first half to give Mason a berth in the finals of the Division 2 regional against Mattawan on Oct. 29, after this paper went to press. Mason controlled play most of the game, outshooting Plainwell 9-3 and hitting the crossbar twice. Bulldog coach Nick Binder credited his team’s strong defensive play, especially in the wet conditions. “The ability to score a goal in the first half was huge,” Binder said. “Our defenders did a good job in making sure they didn’t create a lot of opportunities.” Brandenburg took the corner kick which Pease headed in. Flamme earned the shutout in goal with three saves. If the Bulldogs won their regional title, their first since 2005, they will play either Spring Lake or Grand Rapids Christian in the Division 2 state semifinals at Plainwell on Wednesday, Nov. 2 at 6 p.m., for the right to play for the state championship at a venue to be announced on Saturday, Nov. 5.

MASON — Mason advanced to the Battle Creek Harper Creek regional final with two big wins last week, a 2-0 decision over Dexter in the district final on Oct. 22 and a 1-0 win over Plainwell in the regional semifinal on Oct. 26. Josh Rudd and Taylor Pease scored for the Bulldogs against Dexter, with both goals coming from set pieces. The win gave Mason their ninth district title in the past ten years. “We know that we can defend against a good team,” Binder said. “We’ve only been shut out once this year, so the offense is there, we know that we can create chances and score.” Mason dominated possession for most of the first half, but found chances hard to come by until about 20 minutes into the contest, when they were given a free kick about 45 yards from the Dreadnought goal. Peter Brandenburg lofted the ball into the box, where Tyler Raab headed the ball against the cross bar. Rudd pounced on the rebound and put it home with 19:39 left in the half. Dexter nearly tied the game 15 minutes into the second half off of a corner kick, when Mason sophomore goalkeeper Josh Flamme was forced to make a tough save at the near post, and Dexter freshman Luke Bazick headed the rebound off of the Mason crossbar. That miss seemed to put spring into

the Dreadnoughts’ step, and the Bulldogs found themselves defending in their own half for a large portion of the game. “We had players we were rotating in, but I think we had some tired legs for a while in the second half,” Binder said.

MASON - Mason finished its 2011 football regular season with a triumph for the ages. Saylor LaVallii plunged into the end zone from two yards out with 24.2 seconds left on the clock to lift Mason (8-1) to a dramatic 32-28 win over previously undefeated Croswell-Lexington (8-1) on Oct. 21. “It was a huge win because Croswell-Lexington is a great football team,” Mason coach Jerry VanHavel said. “It could have gone either way, and I’m very happy that our kids played right to the final whistle.” Things didn’t look good early for Mason, who had to come from behind after a somewhat slow start. LaVallii scored three times in the second half,

including a 36-yard run after a swing pass from Thomas McNamara that gave the Bulldogs their first lead of the game, 25-21 with 4:09 left in the fourth quarter. The Pioneers came back and regained the lead on a 25-yard pass from Nathan Guitar to Anwar Childers that gave Cros-Lex a 28-25 lead with 1:32 left. McNamara then led a memorable Bulldog comeback with a drive that included long passes to Connor Holbrook and Logan Fitchett, and then ran the ball himself down to the Cros-Lex 2-yard line to set up the winning score.

He is survived by his wife Janet, his sons Parker (Alice) Irey, Tim Wilson & Hilde, and Lance (Janet) Irey, his daughters Cindy (David) Langdon, and Alison (Mark) Travis, his stepchildren Marcia (Chris) Grondahl, Tom (Pam) Taylor, Ron (Eileen) Taylor, Jeff (Gayle) Taylor, and Colleen (Melody) Taylor, his grandchil dren, Nichole, Kenneth, Craig, Heather, Kyle, Morgan, Robin, Robert, Tom, John, Adam, Kelli, Casey, and Tiffany, brother Wilson (Jay) Irey, and sisters Leona DeNio, and Thelma Mean, many nieces, nephews, great grandchildren, friends, and extended herd. Ken was a combat veteran of the Korean war, serving as a Master Sergeant in the United States Army. He was a talented woodworker, enjoyed playing golf, gardening, photogra phy, loved animals and practical jokes. He spent over 50 years in the construction industry. His last project was Ele’s Place in Lansing. Services will be held at the Dansville United Method ist Church on Saturday October 29th at 11:00a.m. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in his name to the Dansville United Methodist Church at 1317 East Mason Street Dansville, Michigan 48819. The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 at the church. Sugested attire: red socks.
