randon Sanders doesn’t have a car, so when he needs to go somewhere, he unlocks his bicycle. He enjoys not paying for car insurance or the rising price of gasoline. He enjoys it less when he reaches a destination and can’t find a place to park. Sanders locked his bike on a recent trip to Lansing’s Old Town district, where another bicycle was tied to a parking meter down the block. “It’s just really frustrating,” he said. “I don’t want to leave it three blocks around the corner and walk. I’ve never had anything stolen, but I don’t want there to be a first time, either.” Too few spaces and concerns about theft are keeping people from traveling by bicycle, proponents of a proposed Lansing policy change say.
PUBLIC HEARING The City Council’s public services committee will hold a public hearing on a proposed ordinance requiring bike parking when buildings are constructed or renovated July 25. A time and location have not been formalized.
The new rules would require bike parking be installed when buildings are renovated or constructed. Any work that requires review of a site plan would be included. Advocates such as city Councilwoman Jessica Yorko, herself an avid cyclist, believe the idea is about more than bike racks. Doing this, they say, would make Lansing a more progressive city in its treatment of bicyclists and pedestrians. “We want to make sure that there are not excessive barriers to (cycling),” See BICYCLE, Page 5
We all scream for ... Zucchini? It’s not exactly the ice cream truck, but some kids from a Lansing neighborhood hope a new door-todoor vegetable cart will generate some healthy summer excitement. Introducing the Veggie Wagon, a project by Lansing’s Urbandale Farm — a community garden planted in a former vacant lot on South Hayford Street. Organizers noticed last year that neighborhood children were often the most excited about volunteering in the garden, so they wanted to give the kids something all their own to do. At the same time, they wanted to find a way to reach out to more neighbors. “We want to be able to take fresh produce to people in the neighborhood who might not be able to get out or whose schedules don’t allow them to get to the farm,” said Laura DeLind, co-founder of the Urbandale Farm and a professor at Michigan State University. “This is a way to take the farm to the neighborhood.” The cart took its maiden voyage this week and will be available every

And who says children don’t like vegetables? Veggie carter Clifton Haines, 11, is all about radishes. “And tomatoes,” he said. “I don’t know. I just think they taste good.” The Urbandale Farm is part of a larger effort in Lansing to increase access to fresh food in areas that either lack a grocery store or where residents have limited transportation to travel to a store. I5 L.A.B.S. camp starts on Monday All summer long, kids have been beating the heat with science fun during Impression 5’s Summer L.A.B.S. camps. Monday, July 25, kicks off a new week of exploration. Kids will be letting out “ewwws” and “ahhhs” during Gross Science as they investigate wounds, plaque and other disgusting parts of the human body (ages 3 to 5). Creativity will flourish during Science of Art as young artists create their own recycled paper, watercolors and more in order to paint their very own masterpiece (ages 5 to 7). Kids will be venturing to the silver screen during Movie Making as they learn about shadows, sound effects and more while they work to complete their very own films. (ages 7 to 9). Is it fact or fiction? Students will be pondering this question all week during Advanced Myth Busters as they experiment to finally get the answers to science’s most mythical questions (ages 9 to 12).

The best news about the smooth jazz genre or broader blend of jazz that so many adults enjoy today may be in artists like Bob Baldwin. “We have another first for An Evening of Smooth Jazz,” explained BMRW Promotions spokesperson Charlie Wilson. “On Friday, July 29, Bob Baldwin will be the first keyboardist to headline our summer music series. One of our first bands, The Miller Group from North Carolina will be back as well as Lansing local band 496 West who first debuted in 2008.” Highly regarded as one of the top pianists in the country, it has already been a banner year for New York native Bob Baldwin. Baldwin who resides in Georgia is internationally recognized as a recording artist, producer, songwriter, arranger and radio host. He is often described as a child prodigy who learned to play jazz piano and upright bass from his father (Bob Baldwin, Sr.)

Yorko said. “Sometimes, unavailability of parking is a barrier.” The rules would apply not only to businesses, but residential buildings and public places such as stadiums and libraries. Shortand long-term bicycle parking is proposed. Bike riders on short trips could secure their bicycles to racks. Commuters, who leave their bikes unattended for hours, could use such places as bicycle rooms or lockers. The council’s public services committee, which Yorko chairs, has requested more data on the cost of installation and, for reference, how many building permits issued last year would have been subject to the requirements. A public hearing is planned for July 25.
Three bicycles share a single bike rack along Turner Street in Old Town. Roughly 30 permits issued in the last year would have fallen under the rules had the policy been in place, said Sue Stachowiak, Lansing’s zoning administrator.
Among the projects that would trigger the ordinance, she said, include adding more than 1,000 square feet of impenetrable surface to a site, adding more than

COST ESTIMATES Advocates of a proposed policy that would require installation of bicycle parking spaces when buildings are constructed or renovated requested price estimates from CycleSafe, a Grand Rapidsbased company. A Lansing City Council committee is reviewing the proposal. According to the company, starting prices for wall racks are $51; inverted U racks are $125 or $188, depending on the style; vintage- and modern-style racks run near $300; and locker installation costs, on average, $1,500. The prices are not formal bids.

Regional Chamber of Commerce proposed the idea to its businesses and developers, said Kristin Beltzer, senior vice president of government relations. The policy hasn’t officially been vetted but Beltzer said initial concerns include added costs for a developer. “To us, this is probably not the first priority,” she said, although it is “on our radar screen and we want to take a look at it.” Downtown, where significant redevelopment has occurred in recent years, is challenging because of a lack of space, Yorko said. The ordinance as drafted would not require bike parking there unless off-street parking is available. A deeper conversation is needed about what to do with the district, she said. Commuters are “really a large part of the population we’re trying to focus on,” said at-large Councilman Brian Jeffries, a committee

Energetic dancers to perform for community 42 dancers perform five shows at three different locations OKEMOS — In its start-up season, the Community Dance Project involved four choreographers and eight dancers. Now, six years later, 16 choreographers and 42 dancers will bring their infectious energy to five shows, four dates and three locations, with two different dance programs. And dance fans can afford to attend them all because zero is still the cost of admission — although donations are welcome. Program A is comprised of dances with smaller casts (1-5 dancers) and includes works by Clara Martinez, a dance major at Ohio State University (recently ranked the No. 1 dance program in the country); Okemos High School junior Grace French and Lea-Janell Mitchell, who this fall
will attend the prestigious Hartt Conservatory for Dance. Program B offers works with at least five dancers, up to the largest dance. Among the pieces: First-time choreographer Katherine McKinney fuses hip-hop, modern and classical styles of dance, set to the unlikely musical pairing of Eminem and Leanne Womak. Professional choreographer Tracy Holtzer launches “Everybody Dance Now,” with 19 dancers performing to music of Michael Buble’ and J-Lo. Both concerts will be performed at LCC’s Dart Auditorium, with Program A on Wednesday, July 27, at 8 p.m. and Program B at the same time the following night. The next weekend, both concerts change venues. Program A’s smaller cast fits well at (SCENE) MetroSpace in East Lansing on Friday, Aug. 5, with back-to-back shows at 7 and 8 p.m. The next day at 2 p.m., Program B fills a large outdoor stage
RUMMAGE SALE HELPS COSTS But the participants stepped up and covered $1,400 of production costs themselves, and hope to raise the other half of needed funds at a rummage sale on Saturday, July 30, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Happendance Studios, corner of Jolly and Hagadorn Roads in Okemos. The organizers hope people will come prepared to buy bargains (or make a donation), and enjoy food, dancing and music while you’re there.

Grant to YMCA aids military families LANSING — The Westside Community YMCA has received a $15,000 grant from The Sierra Club Foundation to provide military kids and their family members from the Lansing community with opportunities to attend YMCA day camps and/or family overnight camps free of charge. This funding comes on the heels of First Lady Michelle Obama’s launch of “Joining Forces,” a national initiative to support and honor America’s service members and their families. “Military families often face significant financial and emotional stress, especially those with loved ones deployed overseas, and we want them to know that the Y is here to support them,” said Marcus Kirkpatrick, executive director. “We’re both grateful and proud to collaborate with The Sierra Club to help military fami-

lies spend time together outdoors, engaging in healthy activities to benefit their general health and wellbeing. S. Frank Gallo, national executive director of the Armed Services YMCA, which provides support services for military service members and their families all over the world, believes such outdoor activities can be especially important for those in military life. “Research suggests that time spent outdoors can reduce stress and other negative health factors in children’s activities such as swimming, hiking and environmental education with other children in similar situations can give youth from military families one more
tool to help cope with the stress of deployment.” At the Westside Community YMCA, the grant will be used to serve over 100 military family and youth. Children between the ages of 5-15 have the chance to partake in one MondayFriday Youth Day Camp at the Westside Community YMCA until Aug. 29. This opening gives children a place to have fun, learn new skills, make new friends, experience diversity and learn to appreciate the world more fully. Families as a whole are welcome to engage themselves in a two-night, three-day Family Residential Camping experience on the ground of Mystic Lake Camp, which is open all
year round. Mystic Lake gives families time to experience camping activities which include archery, fishing, outdoor cooking, horseback riding, nature study and ropes course. Peter Marin, executive director of The Sierra Club Foundation, added, “We are so grateful to Sierra Club Foundation donors who made this grant possible. At a time when our men and women in uniform face unprecedented hardship, we are honored to be able to lend a hand in the best way we know how-by giving them the chance to find solace, peace and support in nature.”

Federal grants to help update two Ingham clinics
THE REGION’S TOP CHOICE FOR HIP AND KNEE REPLACEMENT

klavey@lsj.com
Nearly $500,000 in federal grants will pay to update county health clinics based at Otto Middle School and Willow Plaza in north Lansing. The money will pay for new medical equipment, more comfortable exam rooms and waiting areas and the move to electronic medical records, said Dr. Dean Sienko, medical director for the Ingham County Health Department. “We anticipate this will allow us to serve 1,000 more young people at these two health centers,’ Sienko said. The Otto clinic currently serves about 1,500 people a year; Willow Plaza serves about 5,000. The award was announced July 14 by the

The Otto clinic, established in 1995, serves Otto students and families, as well as others on the north side, with minor and chronic disease care, mental health referrals, immunizations, health promotion and managing chronic diseases such as asthma. mote family planning and prenatal health. The Lansing School District this spring considered closing Otto Middle School, and the school board plans to work on restructuring the district this summer and fall. Sienko said health officials had taken that into account when planning changes for the Otto clinic. “What we would do there would be things that would be transportable,” he said. The grant will pay for furniture and medical equipment such as otoscopes for examining ears, throats and noses and ophthalmoscopes for examining eyes. Sienko said sometimes health care workers are sharing those items because they don’t have enough to keep one in each room. Sienko said he is pleased to get the grant to improve the job Ingham County is doing. “If we invest in young people, they can establish good health habits and they’ll carry it over to their adult years,” he said.

Bob Baldwin hosts a syndicated Smooth Jazz program “New Urban Jazz Lounge” that is being broadcast on more than a dozen stations across the USA-- of which 90 percent are noncommercial stations. Locally, some public schools are finding it beneficial to introduce students to artists or to stimulate interest in the smooth jazz music genre as a fundraiser. All of this is good news for BMRW Promotions said Wilson. “BMRW’s goal is to get live music in the community and to get instrumentalists and vocalists who do not normally come to Mid Michigan in front of audiences and listeners in the area.” For now, it looks like it is working.
Tour of urban gardens aids area Food Bank LANSING – The Garden Project of the Greater Lansing Food Bank presents its annual community garden tour. There are both a bus route and a bike route to enjoy, both featuring what’s growing in new and established community gardens in the Lansing area. This year’s tours will take place beginning at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 27. Both the bus and bike tours will begin at the Garden Project Foster Park Resource Center, located at 2401 Marcus Street on Lansing’s east side. Each tour will feature a different route and showcase different gardens. A sliding scale of a $1 to $20 donation is suggested. The tours will highlight a variety of Lansing’s innovative urban gardens. Attendees will meet area gardeners with guided tours through grow-your-own food gardens, and will enjoy refreshments from local gardens and restaurants. Ride the River Trail by bike and explore the gardens and neighborhoods
of Lansing’s east side, or enjoy a relaxing, cool bus ride that explores community gardens throughout the Lansing area. “Community gardens are so fun and rewarding,” says Gabriel Biber, The Garden Project’s Garden Program Manager. “These bus and bike tours highlight gardeners sharing stories and snacks— they’re improving their health and are proud of what they’ve created together.” Call (517) 853-7809 or willow@Greater LansingFood Bank.org for more information or to reserve your spot. Advance registration is required. In 2010, the Garden Project supported 5,000 neighbors through community gardens and low-income backyard garden assistance. This year, there is a network of 85 community gardens. Over the past year, nearly 3 million pounds of food was provided to hungry people in Ingham, Eaton and Clinton counties at a value of more than $3 million.
