Grant aids spruce up Lewton Elementary School Landscape work made possible by Lowe’s $1,200 grant Laura Misjak
| lmisjak@lsj.com
The elementary students who’ll step foot back on Lewton Elementary School’s campus this fall will be welcomed by dozens of new perennials, shrubs and trees that were planted throughout school grounds July 30. Shovels, rakes and other gardening tools were spread across
the school’s lawn as volunteers helped till soil and spread mulch. About 100 volunteers were expected to stop at the west Lansing elementary school throughout the day to help pitch in with adding nearly 300 additional plants to the area, including perennials, spirea, euonymus and blue rug junipers. Lowe’s, at 320 Marketplace Blvd. in Delta Township, gave a $1,200 grant for the effort along with 18 volunteers to help the school’s staff and parents beautify the grounds. A spring school project that focused on persuasive writing

skills helped the school earn the grant, said Kathy Schultz, a resource room teacher at Lewton, and second-grade teacher Pam Fults. They learned they were chosen to receive grant in June, and Lowe’s employees have visited the school three times since then to help plan the gardening project.
“There’s not really money in the schools anymore, and to have a business involved with this gives kids a sense of pride,” Schultz said. The new plants also will help students learn about growth and gardening through their classes and the gardening club, Fults said. Jessica Weiner, a Lowe’s rep-
resentative who coordinated the store’s side of the planting, said a grant is awarded annually by the store. “Every year we do a community project,” she said. “This gardening project will beautify the school and teach kids about caring for living things and teamwork as well.”
Volunteers and Lowe’s employees wait to plant shrubs as the area in front of Lewton Elementary School is tilled. The school received a grant and help from Lowe’s to spruce up the landscape around the school. For more photos, visit www.lsj.com. ROBERT KILLIPS/LSJ

LANSING — Colonial Village Neighborhood Association (CVNA) recently celebrated the re-opening of the Elmhurst Park Tennis Courts with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The tennis courts are located on Gordon Ave. just east of Boston Blvd. in Colonial Village. The Todd Martin Development Fund’s tennis staff was on hand to provide quick start tennis lessons. Mayor Virg Bernero expressed his enthusiasm and support for the new courts and cut the ribbon. Accompanying him was Nancy Danhof, Todd Martin Fund; Willie Vinson CVNA; and three young tennis lesson participants. After cutting the ribbon, the mayor said he is more a racquet ball player than tennis, however, he was willing to try the game. He rolled up his sleeves, picked up a tennis racquet and briefly

participated in the lesson along with the other adults. Karl Biasi, CVNA president, congratulated Michael Morofsky, CVNA’s Area One Representative, for initially bringing the problem
with the previous tennis courts to Murdock Jemerson’s attention and for his commitment to getting the tennis courts rebuilt. Mr. Jemerson was director of the Lansing’s Parks and Recreation department at the time. When Karl Biasi came on board as president of CVNA, he and Anita Beavers, the association’s past president attended many city budget and planning meetings. The final results — brand new tennis courts complete with new fencing. “Now that the courts are done, we need to show our appreciation to the City of Lansing and the Parks and Recreation Department by using the courts regularly. Let’s play tennis,” said Willie Vinson, a member of CVNA. Ms. Vinson is organizing tennis leagues (singles, dou-

laid off two top administrators and cut pay for those who remained by 10 percent. It also shortened contracts Wallace had signed with them and required them to pick up a larger share of their health care costs. The board had said it would consider restoring the money if other district
employees did not take a similar cut. In joint bargaining sessions, seven district labor unions and one group of nonunionized employees agreed to furlough days, pay freezes and contributing a higher share of health care costs, but did not agree to the 10 percent pay cuts the board wanted.

Superintendent T.C. Wallace Jr. will leave the district at the end of June 2012, a year earlier than the terms of his previous contract with the district. The Lansing school board approved amendments to Wallace’s contract and accepted a summary of his personnel evaluation at its meeting August 4. Wallace earned ratings of “needs improvement” or “satisfactory” on most categories of his annual personnel evaluation. The board also tabled a motion to return 10 percent pay cuts to the district’s other top administrators. Wallace, whose pay is about $182,000 a year, said he has met his goal of serving 25 years as a school superintendent and said he intends to maintain his
focus on the budget and academic achievement during his final year. “When I came to Lansing I made a commitment of four years,” he said. He just finished four years. Wallace’s evaluation, conducted in closed sessions June 27 and July 25, was summarized in a letter from Vice President Charles Ford who heads the board’s personnel committee. The letter also noted that Wallace needs to “increase visibility with parents, students and the community.” The board voted 7-1 to accept the letter, with President Shirley Rodgers voting against it. Board member Amy Hodgin was absent. In a separate document, the board unanimously amended Wallace’s contract to include: »Two years of buy-in to the state retirement
system, to be purchased by June 30, 2012 at a cost of about $46,000. »One unpaid furlough day, similar to the district’s agreement with the teachers’ union. Other district workers will take two furlough days during 2011-12. »The removal of a clause barring him from seeking other employment. That was added in 2009 after Wallace was among finalists for a job in Pontiac. Board member Myra

THEIR HEARING AIDS? Now how many have said their hearing aids make some sounds too loud, don’t work well in noise, or they can’t tell if they are really helping them hear at all? Audiologists and dispensers try to make hearing aids function the best they can to give the patient a good outcome. But there were always a lot of difficulties surrounding comfort and understanding of speech. Let’s say you have a small child, an average sized woman, and a very large man, all with the same hearing loss. All hearing aids would be programmed the same way, according to the hearing aid manufacturers software. But the ear canals themselves must figure into the process, as well. Without diving into too much physics, ear canal size and shape for the child would be quite small. The woman would be close to the average size ear canals and the man’s ear canals would be quite large and long. The child would receive too much power from the hearing aids, the woman’s fitting would be close, and the man’s hearing aids would seem very quiet. All hearing aid manufacturers base their science off the average ear. But no one has the average ear. Live speech mapping is the latest innovative approach to hearing aid fitting which uses natural speech to show how effective digital hearing aids are in helping you to hear speech. With digital speech mapping, an actual speech signal, not tones or hissing sounds, is used to test the hearing aids while inserted in the patient’s ears. This
allows for the shape and size of the patient’s ear canals to be included in the fitting process, as well as using the most important signal we hear, speech. For hearing aid fittings to be successful, speech must be appropriately amplified with respect to loudness, clarity, and comfort. Soft speech should be perceived as soft, moderate speech sounds should be perceived as moderate, and loud speech sounds should not reach the patient’s discomfort level. Speech mapping helps to provide a clear “visual” sense of the hearing loss, and the benefits or perhaps the limitations that your current hearing aids offer in relation to actual speech. While wearing hearing aids, a tiny probe microphone is inserted into the ear canal while the hearing aids are running, then a stimulus (voices/music) is used to measure the output and shows if the hearing aids are amplifying sounds appropriately. The Live Speech Map is displayed on a monitor through easily-understood graphics so that you can actually see sounds that are missing and be presented with a clear visual sense of hearing loss and aided benefits relating to actual speech. It allows you to see graphically just how the aid is performing in a live, real world environment. Once we see what sounds you’re missing, we’ll be able to tune your personal hearing aids until it restores the missing speech patterns and tones. So, not only will you hear the difference a hearing aid makes with your speech, you’ll be able to see the sounds being restored visually as well. A successful hearing aid fitting should be a dynamic,

Tour highlights Catholicism HOT SHADES L
ansing is a great place for history lovers, full of fascinating relics and clues to the past. Some of the most interesting of these are found in local cemeteries. That’s why each year, the Historical Society of Greater Lansing (HSGL) hosts a walking tour of an area cemetery, open to the public. This year’s walk, co-sponsored by the Capital Area District Library, will begin at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 21, at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery on Lansing’s west side. “Our cemeteries are alive with memories,” says Paul D.
