Nine looking to fill seats on Board of Ed Matthew Miller
AT A GLANCE
mrmiller@lsj.com
Nine candidates will be running for three open seats on the nine-member Lansing Board of Education in the Nov. 8 General Election.
Four of the nine individuals running for a seat on the Lansing Board of Education this fall are under the age of 27. Three of the nine have children in the Lansing schools. Only one is an incumbent, Nicole Armbruster, who was appointed earlier this year to fill the seat vacated by Hugh Clarke Jr., who is now a district court judge. Board members Jack Davis and Ken Jones are not seeking reelection. The field of nine candidates will vie for three open positions on the board and for the opportunity to help lead the district through what is certain to be a difficult period. The next iteration of the board will choose a new superintendent to replace T.C. Wallace Jr., who is leaving the district next summer. They will face a 2012-13 budget deficit that could reach $20million and that after the district drained its reserves to balance this year budget. They almost certainly will have to make unpopular decisions,

LANSING GROUPS ADDRESS GAP IN GIVING
Schoolkids get a fresh start with donated school supplies Laura Misjak
| lmisjak@lsj.com
The line of parents and children reached outside the doors of the United Auto Workers Local 652 union hall the afternoon of August 15. Tawana Harrison was one of the hundreds to pass through the line and hand in her vouchers for new backpacks and school supplies for her four children, all in elementary school. “It’s a kick-start,” said Harrison, 28, of Lansing. “This is not everything but it’s a great help. It gives my kids a fresh start for the school year.” The 400 available backpacks went quickly. The Local 652 effort is one of several across the region poised to fill the gap left by the one of the city’s largest backpack donors — the City Rescue Mission of Lansing. The mission discontinued its program this year. Lansing school officials say the volunteer efforts are crucial for the district. About 75 percent of the district’s students qualify for free or reducedprice lunches because of low income, school officials said, and their families feel the crunch more than others

LANSING — The Michigan Women’s Historical Center & Hall of Fame, 213 W. Main St., Lansing, will host a lecture and book signing on Wednesday, Aug. 24 at 5:30 p.m. at the center. The featured speaker will be Sara Fitzgerald, author of the new biography, “Elly Peterson: ‘Mother’ of the Moderates.” Admission to the event is free and copies of Fitzgerald’s book will be available for purchase in the gift shop. Peterson, who was inducted into the Michigan Women’s Hall of Fame in 1984, was the first woman to chair a state Republican Party, twice served as assistant chair of the Republican National Committee and ran for a U.S. Senate seat from Michigan in 1964. In 1976, she served as co-chair of ERAmerica, the coalition of organizations that supported ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment and as deputy chairman of Gerald R. Ford’s presidential campaign committee. Born in Flint, Fitzgerald is a former editor at the Washington Post. She graduated from the University of Michigan in 1973 and was the first woman to serve as editor-in-chief of The Michigan Daily, the campus newspaper. Her book, published by the University of Michigan Press, includes a foreword by Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Haynes Johnson. In her talk, Fitzgerald will reflect on the course of Peterson’ career and how her experience in politics led her to identify more closely with women’s issues than those of her party. — From the Michigan Women’s Historical Center

BWL appointed new commissioner by Mayor LANSING — Lansing resident Anthony W. McCloud has joined the Lansing Board of Water & Light’s (BWL) governing Board of Commissioners. The newly appointed commissioner will serve as representative of Lansing’s Third Ward. His term expires on June 30, 2015. Commissioner McCloud replaces Frank Lain, whose term expired in June. McCloud McCloud was appointed to the board by Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero. His appointment was recently confirmed by the Lansing City Council. “Commissioner McCloud comes to our governing board at an exciting, historic time,” General Manager J. Peter Lark said. “With his guidance and that of his fellow commissioners, the BWL will build a $182 million cogeneration facility in
Lansing’s Reo Town. This will be the BWL’s first cogeneration plant — producing both electricity and steam. Our Board of Commissioners will be integral to the project as we move toward a 2013 completion date.” Board of Commissioners Chair Sandra Zerkle warmly welcomed McCloud. “I look forward to working with Commissioner McCloud and all of my fellow commissioners as we embark on the most ambitious project in the BWL’s 126-year history.” Commissioner McCloud is a state administrative manager of the Office of Prisoner Re-Entry for the Michigan Department of Corrections. His career in Michigan Department of Corrections spans nearly 30 years. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Spring Arbor University. Commissioner McCloud also attended the Michigan Department of Corrections Competitive Leadership Academy in 2001, and a leadership development program, with United Way’s Project Blueprint, in 2007. — From the Board of Water and Light

When she and her husband bought a house in 2009, they made “a conscious decision” to buy in Lansing so that their daughter could attend Lansing schools, she said. “I want my daughter and all the other kids in this district to continue to get the good education that they deserve.” Stephen Manchester, 71, a retired public policy specialist for the Michigan Association for the Education of Young Children, said he’s running because he’s committed to public education and believes that, with the state’s new emergency financial manager law, “public education may be at some risk in the city of Lansing.” He also said he’s been told that he’s good at finding ways for people to work together “and I think we

DRAWING BOARD Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupé Black Series: Frequently, a limited run of specially prepared performance cars leaves the Mercedes-Benz plant wearing the AMG Black Series brand. For 2012, that honor goes to the all-new C-Class coupe. Features include special suspension, brakes and carbon-fiber body pieces, along with a 6.3-liter V8 that makes 510 horsepower, 29 more than the standard AMG Coupé. A seven-speed automated manual transmission handles the shifting chores. MercedesBenz claims the Black Series will reach 60 mph in 4.2 seconds.

der how much gas you’re wasting sitting at red lights. And what about all those left-hand turns where you’re waiting for a break in oncoming traffic to make your break for it? Wonder no more. United Parcel Service UPS began using new route computer software that dials out as many left-hand turns as possible. The result for its 95,000 trucks, according to UPS, was a reduction in total miles travelled of 28.5 million, which helped cut gasoline consumption by about three million gallons. If the no-leftturn policy works for UPS, it could also work for you. Without the UPS software, instituting a no-left policy for yourself might be tough, but if you’re at least conscious of how wasteful left-hand turns are, there appears to be significant savings. If you have a tip, visit www.shiftweekly.com and use the “contact” form.

1973 Volkswagen Super Beetle, sold for $4,450: What’s happening to Beetle demand these days? Recently, you would have needed at least $6,000-$7,000 to acquire a decent example (a few thousand more for a drivergrade convertible), such as this sharplooking example. But now a nice, drivable bug will sell for much less as collectors turn their gazes elsewhere. With plenty of spare parts and Bug service specialists still around, these cars are cheap to own, fun to drive and always draw a crowd. Visit www.ebaymotors.com
TOP GEAR BubbaRope tow rope, $69 and up, www. bubbarope.com: The BubbaRope company sells four strengths of rot-resistance rope, ending with the mighty Jumbo Bubba (pictured) at 1.5 inches in diameter (30 feet in length) and with a 74,000-pound breaking strength. That means about 20 Jeep Wranglers could hang from it at once. At the other end of the spectrum is L’il Bubba, a 20-foot long rope with a breaking strength of 7,400 pounds. If you go off-roading with a club, consider buying a BubbaRope for all to use at club outings.
