Jersey Giant Subs voted area favorite sub mjwhite@lsj.com

LANSING TWP. - It all started over 30 years ago when Butch and Peg Slocum moved here from New Jersey and bought over-priced four-inch subs for $6 apiece. Figuring they could do a lot better for their customers, the Slocums opened their own shop in East Lansing inspired by the food shacks on the boardwalk back home. This year, Jersey Giant Subs won the People’s Choice Award by DeltaWaverly Community News readers for the best subs in the area, thanks to the Slocums’ son, Britt, who owns two local shops, one in Grand Ledge and one on

W. Saginaw near Waverly Road. He also owns a third in Woodhaven near Detroit. Family connections and simple, good food are his recipe for success. Homemade bread, white or wheat, is the cornerstone of each sandwich. “Each one of those glorious 16-inch beauties is made from scratch daily,” Slocum said. “What we don’t sell, we give to Food Movers, (over 6,000 pounds last year alone.)” Slocum likes to keep things simple: lettuce, tomatoes, onions and hot peppers, plus a variety of meats including lowersodium turkey and roast beef. He’s in the process of getting lower-sodium ham, too.

Fuller Travel Service, Inc.

He’s into local companies, too, as much as possible. So he stocks Frito-Lay chips made from Michigan potatoes and his peppers are packed in Kalamazoo. With a blue and white tiled floor and a huge mural of an oceanside scene, the W. Saginaw shop evokes memories of the Jersey boardwalk. Look closely at the mural, though, and you’ll see signs that depict family. The “Butch and Peg Pavilion” says one. “Annie’s Beach,” says another. “Luke-Ken-Mags” says a third. Anne is Britt’s wife; Luke, Ken and Maggie, his children, all of whom have worked for him. Ken, in fact, is now running his own Jersey

Little Red Schoolhouse best for area antiques By MARY JO WHITE mjwhite@lsj.com

DELTA TWP. - Little Red Schoolhouse, the 2011 People’s Choice award winner for favorite antique store by Delta-Waverly Community News readers, has a little something for everyone. Owners Penni Raffler and Ann Hackler carry primitive pottery and glassware, vintage clothing and furniture and some very unusual items in their 11,000-square-foot store, three-quarters of which is devoted to antiques, the rest to crafts. One unique item that Hackler calls an example of “prison art” is a beautiful small table from the early 1900s made entirely of matchsticks and cigar boxes by a prisoner in Ionia.

“We try to do a mix and keep it at a lower price point.” ANN HACKLER

Co-owner of Little Red Schoolhouse

Some antique dealers expect customers to drop a bundle with each visit. Not Raffler and Hackler. “We try to do a mix and keep it at a lower price point,” Hackler said. They carry giftware galore, too, - everything from teapots and kitchen towels to two-sided baby bibs and stained glass night lights. Both owners started as crafters. Hackler does small clay figures, needle felt and what she calls “altered vintage items” that use jewelry, lace and other decorations to create a one-of a -kind piece.

Carpet Man

Raffler does cross stitch, needle punch and quilting. “We expanded when antiques got hot,” Hackler said. Stroll through the store and you’ll find items from over 100 juried sellers, including coins, stamps and military clothing. There’s a whole display of doll clothes and shelves piled high with beautiful yarn in every shade imaginable. Little Red Schoolhouse, 5002 W. Saginaw, is open Mon.-Sat. 10 a.m.-8 p.m. and Sun. noon-5 p.m. For more information, call 517-321-6701.

Want to get romantic? In Grand Ledge, that place would be the ancient ledges, according to Grand Ledge Ledge Independent readers for the 2011 People’s Choice. The ledges, which give the city its name, are made up of rocks which were formed more than 250 million years before dinosaurs walked the earth, according to Eaton County naturalist Jackie Blanc. In addition, some of the plants growing on and around the ledges do not grow anywhere else in southern Michigan due to the unique “micro climate” which results from the unique climate control caused by the ledges. Of course, if the romantic day goes bad, it could go really bad...but let’s not think about that.

Gary Ford, chosen as the favorite barber in Grand Ledge in this year’s People’s Choice survey, finishes cutting Don Garlock’s hair in his Ledge Clippers shop. Ford has been cutting hair in Grand Ledge since 1970 when he returned from service in the Navy. ALAN MILLER/LCN

GRAND LEDGE — Given a choice, Gary Ford, chosen as Grand Ledge’s favorite barber by Grand Ledge readers in this year’s People’s Choice survey, would do it all again. “It’s a good career,” he said. The best part of the job, Ford said, is “getting to know people,” because it is such a people oriented occupation. He and his clippers can be found at Ledge Clippers, 106 East River St.. “In a lot of businesses, you have to deal with people who don’t like you,” he said. “But not here, because if someone doesn’t like you they go somewhere else.” Ford, who grew up on a farm near Grand Ledge, has been a part of the busi-

ness community for many years. After graduating from barber school in 1966, he enlisted in the Navy, where he served four years on aircraft carriers the Roosevelt and the Kennedy. After returning to Grand Ledge in 1970, he began at the Ledge Clippers and is still there five days a week.

Ford has been highly visible in his church and in the community. He is former president of the Lions Club, and an active member of the Oneida Gospel Church, where he is part of the music program. Last year, he retired from the Singers on the Grand after 12 years in the bass section.

In addition to Ford, who has been there 41 years, Rick Merrifield has been at Ledge Clippers for 34 years, and Shelly Walsh for 19 years. The best thing about being a barber? “Every 20 minutes or so, you get a different personality in the chair.” Ford can be reached at (517) 627-2250.

Favorite photographer is no flash in the pan processing. Floeter has been an active member in the Grand Ledge community since he arrived. He can be seen at many local festivals playing his harmonica. And during Yankee Doodle Days, he will be the guy in red, white and blue, dressed as Uncle Sam.

GRAND LEDGE - He may own the oldest photo studio in the area. He may be 85. But don’t let that give you the impression that Ernst Floeter is retired. He’s still on the job, taking pictures. “As long as I am able, why not?” he said. He was named the favorite photographer and his studio, Floeter Photography, is the favorite photo studio for Grand Ledge readers in the 2011 People’s Choice. Photo technology has changed a bit since Floeter started out as a photographer’s apprentice in 1947 in Berlin, Germany. But in general, it remains the same, he said. “It’s still a black box with a hole in the front,” he said during an interview in his home, built in

Floeter also shares his World War II stories with veterans groups or other gatherings. A former German soldier, he was grateful when he was captured by American troops. His first trip to the U.S. was as a prisoner of war. “I didn’t want to fight for those Germans,”

Modern Skate & Surf maintains its local feel

Groesbeck: City’s favorite

Ann Nichols

Groesbeck Golf Course is Lansing’s choice as the favorite golf course. The 5,950-yard, par 71, 18-hole course, has been named one of the top 10 municipal courses in all of Michigan. Tucked in the heart of Lansing, the course offers challenging shots and fun for just about every skill level. Local residents love the course. Dominic Olivett, 85, hits a tee shot on the back nine at Groesbeck Golf Course as he plays his regular round with friend Jack Perrone, 80, in Lansing .. The two friends have played the golf course for about 65 years and 70 years respectively, they said. Dominic has five holes in one on the course, and Jack has two. ROD SANFORD|LSJ MEDIA

Whether you’re an experienced skier looking for new bindings, or a nervous parent buying your child’s first skateboard, Modern Skate & Surf is the place to go. t all started with a picture frame. When Kathy Holcomb decided to learn how to mat and frame a picture instead of paying someone else to do it, she discovered a lifelong passion. Today, she is in the eighth year of owning Absolute Gallery where she sells a wide variety of art and offers matting and framing service. The gallery was the winner of the the People’s Choice for an art gallery in Lansing. The gallery is based on the philosophy that every customer should be able to afford to own art, even if they don’t have a lot of money. Holcomb curates a constantly evolving collection of sculpture, jewelry, prints, textiles, greeting cards, and even toys.

One of the most popular artists is John Balks, a 95-year-old Latvian immigrant who lives in Kalamazoo. In addition to selling art and framing, Holcomb branches out into music, offering chamber concerts at the Gallery on Friday nights during the winter months. In the summer, the store serves more families; it’s not uncommon to see grandparents, parents and children discussing their selections over the glass cases. The most popular flavor, by the way, is something called Sesquicentennial Swirl. Created to celebrate M.S.U.’s 150th birthday, it features cake batter ice cream, cake pieces and a green frosting swirl. If you want a little lunch with your dessert, the Dairy Store also serves a legendary grilled cheese sandwich, hot and cold drinks and a variety of cheese made in the Dairy Plant, including bags of cheese curds and the intriguing Chocolate Cheese Confection.

When Fabiano’s Candies calls itself a “family business, they aren’t kidding. The store has been operation since 1924, when present owner Madeline Fabiano Blair’s father convinced his own father to buy a candy shop in Holland, Mich.. Since then, the business has been run by Blair’s father, then by Blair and her sister; and is now in the capable hands of Blair and her son Steven. The sweet shop moved to Lansing in 1935, and it’s been a local fixture ever since. The store was named the best candy shop in Lansing and East Lansing. Candy is made in the kitchen behind the Michigan Avenue storefront, and there are a dizzying number of options including creams, nuts, truffles, cordial cherries, sea foam, Peanut Butter Melt-A-Ways and caramels. Many flavors are available in a sugar-free version, and the almond toffee, Pecan Turtles and

Trays of delicious sweets greet customers at Fabiano’s. FILE PHOTO peanut clusters are customer favorites. When asked who shops at the store, Blair says “everyone! Men buy as much chocolate as women do, and moms come in to buy our candy for their children because it doesn’t have preservatives in it.”

Fabiano’s Candies is known throughout the state, ships across the country, and once made a chocolate Oldsmobile for Willard Scott. At the end of the day, though, Blair says people love it because it’s “really just an old-fashioned candy store.”

It takes the old-word approach to service and providing quality at a range of prices. Talk about longevity among staff; the newest member of the store’s 15-member staff has been with retailer for 15 years. Former governors still come back to the store for clothes. PORTLAND — When Ed and Linda Trenn opened the doors to the Looking Grand Cafe & Bakery in 2008 they planned to provide customers with homestyle food made from scratch. That attention to quality has been noticed by their customers as the Looking Grand Cafe earned four awards from Portland voters in the 2011 People’s Choice awards through Lansing Community Newspapers.

Looking Grand Cafe & Bakery was voted as having the Best Breakfast, Best Brunch, Best Lunch and Best Hamburger by Portland voters. “I think the customers are happy with what we have to offer,” said Linda Trenn. “And we are glad that the customers want to come back.” The Trenns purchased the cafe in April of 2008 and opened to the public that September after renovating the interior. They also brought a wealth of cooking experience. Linda had taught at a culinary

school in Rhode Island for six years and spent the 2007 teaching in Grand Rapids. Meanwhile, Ed had served as a chef at the Fidelity Investments corporate headquarters in Boston. Both are pleased with their decision to come to Portland. “We see a lot of new customers each week,” said Ed Trenn. “We try to make a visit here a good experience for the customers and we also try to make this a fun experience for our employees and that helps. “Being able to offer homemade food

has been key to our success,” added Ed Trenn. “Everything is made from scratch and that is important to both of us.” The Looking Grand Cafe was offering breakfast and lunch when the Trenns first opened in September of 2008. They added dinner hours later that December. “Our customers asked us is we could be open for dinner,” said Ed Trenn. “Linda and I also saw the potential for staying open later. And we are glad we

Kiebler Agency has long history of good service Beginning of agency in Portland can be traced back to 1914 Tom Thelen

PORTLAND — The Kiebler Insurance Agency in downtown Portland has a long history of providing area residents with their insurance needs. Their clients rewarded the dedication of the staff as the Kiebler Agency was voted as the Favorite Insurance Agency by Portland-area readers. Lydia McCauley, account executive, credits the level of customer service that the agency staff provides for earning the honor. “We provide friendly, hometown customer service,” said McCauley. “We want to treat people in the way that they want to be treated.” “We also like to do our job,” added agent Alice Fedewa. “We enjoy coming

here and helping our customers. A lot of our clients have been with us for many years, some 25 years or even 50 years.” The Kiebler Agency staff also credits their experience. Fedewa has been with the agency since 1960 and agent Mary Lue Brown has been with the agency since 1965. “We also had another agent, Jane Pohl, who had been working here for 20 years until she retired two years ago,” said Brown. The agency itself can trace its roots back to 1914. During the 1950s, the agency was purchased by Carl Derby and Hilton Kiebler. Kiebler became the sole owner in the early 1960s. The agency would later be passed to Kiebler’s son Daryl. In 2007, Daryl Kiebler retired and sold the agency to Chris Fisher and the Keyser Insurance Group of Kalamazoo. The Kiebler Agency is an independent insurance agency and offers insurance from a variety of companies, including The Kiebler Insurance Agency in downtown Portland has been serving are resident for over 60 years. But as word of the extended hours got out we had more people come in.” Among the cafe’s popular items are omelettes, baked macaroni and cheese, chicken and dumpling stew, goulash and rhubarb pie. The Trenns said that the most enjoyable part of owning the cafe has been the customers.

“We just enjoy meeting with our customers,” said Linda Trenn. “We have enjoyed talking with them and getting to know more about them. They make this a fun place and have been very supportive of us.” The Trenns said they are working on more additions to the menu, such as more Mexican food items. “Down the road we would like to have an actual bakery,” said Linda Trenn. “That is my real forte.” The Looking Grand Cafe and Bakery is located at 117 E.
