Dr. Massa does his best for every patient

Sue Lounds

| slounds@lsj.com

“I try to do my best every time with every patient,” says Dr. Rodger Massa, the Clinton County News readers’ 2011 People’s Choice for favorite chiropractor. That could have something to do with why people voted for him. “I have a really good staff,” Massa said. “My staff cares about the patients. If people have an emergency and need to get in, we’ll work them in. Their care is important to us.” In addition to Massa’s services, visitors to St. Johns Chiropractic Clinic can also have a massage done by one of three massage therapists. “We have three massage therapists,” Massa said. “They work for me and they do massages, and they all do things a little differently. Massa said the scope of chiropractic has changed in recent years. “Now we can use ultrasound and electric muscle stimulation,” he said. Both of those advancements allow Massa to better serve his patients.

Thank you for voting us Best Burger for the past 4 years.

“We can use the ultrasound or electric muscle stim to help relieve the pain enough that I can do an adjustment,” he said. The therapists also help by doing a few minutes of massage to help the patient relax, thus making it easier for Massa to do necessary adjustments. “We take the time they need,” said Massa. “If we Dr. Massa can’t help, we’ll find someone who can.” Helping his patients and relieving their pain, that’s what makes Dr. Massa the 2011 People’s Choice. St. Johns Chiropractic Clinic is open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 8 a.m. to noon and 2 to 5:40 p.m. and Tuesday from 9 a.m. to noon. Everyone knows your name at Bruno’s Bar Sue Lounds slounds@lsj.com

ST. JOHNS – Bruno’s Bar has been a fixture in downtown St. Johns since 1915. Dean Mazzolini is the third generation owner of the Clinton County News readers’ 2011 People’s Choice for favorite bar. Asked why he thought people voted for Bruno’s, Mazzolini has this to say: “Maybe it’s like Cheer’s, where everybody knows your name. It’s one big, happy family.” Mazzolini says he figures Bruno’s has about 90 “regulars.” Bruno’s is open seven days a week. Monday through Saturday, the bar opens at 7 a.m. and closes at about 1 a.m. Sunday the door opens at noon and closes at midnight. In addition to a full bar, Bruno’s offers a variety of

food – pizza, subs, wings, burgers, salads, for example. And there are daily food specials – like Taco Tuesday and Wing Wednesday. Sunday’s special is a 10-inch one-item pizza and a pitcher for $5. “Specials on other days vary,” said Mazzolini. Bruno’s, at the corner of North Clinton Avenue and East Higham Street, has a patio out in front. “The patio is very popular, weather permitting,” he said. “I started out here as a kid,” said Mazzolini. “The old guys would take care of me, treat me well. Now that’s happening with my kids.” Bruno’s is an active community supporter. “We have pool leagues, and we sponsor teams in bowling, softball and volleyball,” Mazzolini said. “And we have bus trips to

Tigers and Lions games, the casino.” “Like everybody, we have Keno and pull tabs.” When Mazzolini’s grandfather – Bruno Mazzolini – first opened the business, it was a restaurant that served alcohol. Then came prohibition. “He sold apples, ice cream, hot dogs, anything to stay afloat during prohibition,” said Dean Mazzolini. When prohibition ended, he started serving alcohol again. When Dean’s father, Don Mazzolini ran the establishment, it was a bar, not a restaurant. Now Bruno’s is a bar that serves food. In addition to Bruno’s, Mazzolini owns Deano’s Pizza and Mazz’s End Zone, businesses located on either side of the bar. Both of those establishments serve pizza by the

ST. JOHNS – For the second year in a row, Shaggie’s Ice Cream is the Clinton County News People’s Choice for best place to buy ice cream. Shaggie’s opened in downtown St. Johns in June 2009. The store is owned by Don Thompson. His daughter Michelle helps him run the establishment. Shaggie’s serves hand-dipped ice cream in too many flavors to count, hand-dipped frozen yogurt, soft-serve ice cream and softserve Frace - a non-dairy frozen treat. “We always have two flavors of Frace and the flavors change every week,” said Michelle. If an ice cream cone isn’t enough, Shaggie’s staff will make you a shake, malt, flurry, banana split, float, sundae, cooler, whatever you want. Though Shaggie’s is

known for its ice cream, it has much more to offer than just cold, sweet confections. Shaggie’s boasts a wide variety of lunch items from salads and wraps to burgers, pulled pork and chicken tenders. “Our kitchen is open all day,” said Michelle. Shaggie’s also features a game room where they do birthday parties. Call (989) 292-4005 to schedule a party or arrange for catering, which Shaggie’s also does. “We have a Wii which the party kids can play,” said Michelle. “Kids like to get a cone and then hang out in the back room. The back room is fun.” Don Thompson is relatively new to the restaurant business. “I was in the same industry (investments) for 26 years,” he said. “I always wanted to own my own business. My buddy owns Scoopy Doos in DeWitt, and he was

a huge help to me getting started here. I had a great model to follow and a willing mentor.” Thompson is finding more ways to branch out and to serve the community. He just got approval from the City Commission to vend at the city park, so you’ll be seeing his ice cream wagon there this summer. He’ll be back at the Mint Festival in August. Shaggie’s was at school carnivals Riley, Eureka and Fowler this year. “We take our freezers and do school-type carnivals,” said Michelle. “Then we donate some of the proceeds back to the organization.” Shaggie’s opens Monday through Saturday at noon and closes at 9 p.m. - or after the last customer is served. Sunday store hours are 2-9 p.m. Call (989) 292-4005 to schedule a party or to arrange catering.

ST. JOHNS – Dr. Nick Koenigsknecht joined his father at Koenigsknecht Dentistry June 1, 2005. Just six years later, Dr. Nick has been voted the Clinton County News readers’ 2011 People’s Choice for favorite dentist. “I think it has a lot to do with the tradition from my dad,” said Dr. Nick about his selection as the People’s Choice. “It’s as much the Dr. Nick staff as it is me. The patients seem to really enjoy the relationships with our staff.” Dr. Nick points out the staff at the dental office have been with the practice for a long time. “There’s a continuation there, continuity,” he says. “We try to make a visit here as comfortable and familiar as possible. We try to create a homey, family experience.” And that family feeling increased recently when Dr. Nick’s younger brother

Koenigsknecht at Koenigsknecht Dentistry. “We are now able to add more hours,” said Dr. Nick. “We are open earlier and during lunch time.” Koenigsknecht Dentistry is open Monday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Tuesday through Thursday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. They offer family dentistry including cosmetic dentistry, veneers, implants and crowns, bridges, dentures, extractions and root canals. Dr. Nick grew up in St. Johns and is very happy to be back here living and working. “I feel I have a responsibility to give back to my community,” said Dr. Nick. He gives back, not only by caring for his patients’ dental health, but by being involved in the community. He is an active member of St. Johns Rotary and is secretary of the St. Johns Board of Education. “It’s an example set by my parents,” said Dr. Nick. “They have always been active in the community, volunteering and giving back.”

Flap Jack makes diners feel at home

Satisfying patrons a top goal for Eleanor and Bud Wasson Dawn Parker

| dlparker@lsj.com

DeWITT – Even at 10 a.m. on a Monday, diners at the Flap Jack Restaurant are still coming in for a late breakfast. Seeing people linger over their biscuits and gravy makes owner Eleanor Wasson smile. Wasson is also appreciative of those same customers for selecting the Flap Jack as Best Breakfast in the 2011 Peoples Choice Award voting. Wasson and her husband, Bud, established the first Flap Jack locations in the Lansing area. The DeWitt location is their only one now, and one they reopened nearly three years ago after it had been closed.

Seeing diners happy always puts a smile on Flap Jack Restaurant owner Eleanor Wasson’s face. Wasson and her husband, Bud, are pleased their customers returned that feeling by naming them “Best Breakfast” in the 2011 Peoples Choice See FLAP JACK, Page 14 Awards voting. DAWN PARKER/LCN

DeWITT — It is little wonder that Flotka’s ATA Martial Arts in DeWitt is the People’s Choice for the best martial arts school. Carl Flotka, a Sixth Degree Black Belt, has nurtured martial arts training under the ATA banner for decades in the Lansing area, and has mentored many instructors and trained hundreds of students. Between 100 and 150 students now train at the Flotka ATA center, located at 13151 Schavey Road in DeWitt. “We build a family atmosphere here. Some parents of my current students are former students of mine who really benefitted from the training and now bring their kids in to have the same experi-

ence.” Flotka said. “To me, that is the highest compliment you can make about our program,” he said. The Bath graduate said the hit 1971 action movie, “Billie Jack,” ignited his interest in the martial arts. As a kid it was exciting to see bad guys being pummeled by spectacular kicks and punches by a normally peaceful former Green Beret. “Of course, kids have fun kicking and punching, but it is much more than that. Our goal is to build confidence, self-esteem, and a positive attitude through self-discipline and hard work,” Flotka said. The father of three, all of whom have attained a Black Belt status, began his working life earning a good living at Fisher Body. “But that life wasn’t for me,” Flotka said.

He managed then purchased an ATA martial arts school in Delta Township from his instructor before selling it and buying the ATA center in DeWitt from one of his students. His long career in martial arts training has its rewards, the biggest of which is seeing kids mature and learn skills. “I don’t think you can put a price on a kid’s smile,” he said. His students range in age from kids as young as 4-years-old to adults, many of whom have children enrolled in DeWitt ATA. Young students gather for training during the summer in the mornings and classes also take place evenings to allow for older students and adults to hone their skills. Class sizes among the younger students range

Gilbert’s Hardware puts focus on customers Ken Palmer

GILBERT’S TRUE VALUE

kpalmer@lsj.com

DeWITT TWP. — Gilbert’s True Value Hardware may be the only full-service hardware store in the immediate area. But co-owner K.C. Gilbert is quick to note that he’s still operating in an extremely competitive market. “There’s a Meijer store right across the street,” Gilbert said. “And a Lowe’s and Home Depot are 15 minutes away. There’s a lot of competition in the hardware business.” From all appearances, the five-year-old store in the DeWitt Northway Center is building customer loyalty. Readers of the DeWitt-Bath Review voted it best hardware store in the 2011 People’s Choice Awards. “We have a lot of very good customers, so I can see why that would happen,” Gilbert said. “We try to give them the best possible service we can.” The Chicago-based True Value Company has more than 5,000 independently owned stores. The DeWitt store employs 15 and offers a full range of tools and electrical and plumbing items. Flap Jack

FLAP JACK RESTAURANT

Continued from Page 10

“We live locally, and this is close to home,” Wasson said. “We love working with people, both our customers and our employees.” Part of the secret to their success, Wasson believes, is working to maintain a “warm and homey atmosphere” in the restaurant. That extends to the employees, many of whom Wasson said have been with them since the restaurant opened. The Flap Jack offers daily specials for all three meals, and is justifiably proud of their omelets and skillets. Savory soups are also made daily from scratch, but the dish drawing perhaps the most fans is Flap Jack’s broasted chicken. For the uninitiated, broasting is done in something like a large pressure cooker.

Location: 12800 S Bus. US-127 Hours: Monday - Saturday 6 a.m. to 8 p.m, Sunday 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Phone: (517) 669-9090

The chicken is marinated overnight, Wasson said, and then cooked in the broaster. The birds are done in a scant 12 minutes, and are flavorful and moist while boasting 35 percent less fat. It’s clear from their voting that Flap Jack customers appreciate all the care the restaurant goes to craft their meals. “It makes me very proud and very excited that people voted for us,” Wasson said. “All the people who work with us here, they try very hard.” The restaurant is at 12800 S. Business US 127 in DeWitt, between Herbison and Webb roads. For more information, call (517) 669-9090 or go online to www.flapjacksoflansing.com

DeWITT — It’s all about family at DeWitt Dental Associates. Voted DeWitt’s favorite dental practice in the 2011 People’s Choice Awards, the office is home to Bill Schoonover Jr., DDS and his two sons. A fourth dentist works alongside the family team. Bill Schoonover has been in practice, in the same location in downtown DeWitt, for the past 33 years. His son Andrew Schoonover, DDS joined the practice six years ago, and another son, Dave Schoonover, DDS came along last year. Mark Hostetler, DDS has also worked at the practice for the past 20 years. Working together as a family fits well with the nature of the dental practice, as the office focuses on general family dentistry. “We are a very family oriented practice,” said Andrew Schoonover. “We treat our patients like our own family.”

Vincent Zea carries on family barber tradition dlparker@lsj.com

OKEMOS – In the world of barbering, Vincent Zea is a snip off the old locks. Zea, the 2011 Peoples’ Choice Award winner for Best Barber, has been with Okemos Barber Shop since 1988. His father, Vincent Sr., began the shop in 1962. “I worked at a few other places. It wasn’t the same,” Vincent Zea said. “It’s good to be around family. I hope to carry on the tradition.” The Lansing Waverly grad remembers spending time in and around the barber shop as a child, including a burger next door at the Sip ‘n’ Snack or over to Miller Ice Cream (now the Travelers Club)

for a root beer float. Zea attended Lansing Community College before deciding to enroll in barber college. “I figured I’d … take the burden off my parents,” he recalled. After graduation Zea came to work with his father – but only once Dad had given the OK. The staff also features Vincent’s sister Pattie, 50-year vet Tony LaForgia and Curt Keyworth. Pattie Zea said her brother’s strength is how he interacts with customers. “He’s good with people,” she said. “He listens to what they want and provides them with a quality service.” “Dad always taught us the customer is first, and

that they should be well taken care of,” Zea said. That philosophy carries over into the shop’s mission to be family-oriented and cater to all age groups. Zea said he is honored to have been selected as Best Barber, but stressed the credit should be spread around. “I hope it goes a long way. I would like people to recognize not just me, but everyone in there,” he continued. ”It’s a team effort – it’s not just one person who makes it great. I think we all learn something from the people we work with.” Okemos Barber Shop is at 4688 Okemos Road. For more information, call (517) 349-0650 or become a fan on Facebook.

Best ice cream comes from MSU Dairy store Ann Nichols For LCN

EAST LANSING – The M.S.U. Dairy Store is known for generous scoops of fresh, rich, ice cream made daily at the Dairy Plant next door. “I’m a big ice cream guy, and it’s the best ice cream I’ve ever had” says the store’s supervisor, John Holderbaum. He may be a little biased, but the small store nestled in the lower level of Anthony Hall attracts customers from across campus, the Lansing area, and the state. There is often a line out the door on hot, summer days. It is the People’s Choice for best ice cream in Lansing and East Lansing. According to Holder-

MSU Dairy Store employee Tim Whelan scoops up some ice cream. ANN NICHOLS baum, the Dairy Store is a popular destination for students and faculty during the school year, and often hosts field trips where students can watch ice cream production in the Dairy

Plant. In the summer, the store serves more families; it’s not uncommon to see grandparents, parents and children discussing their selections over the glass cases. The most popular flavor, by the way, is something called Sesquicentennial Swirl. Created to celebrate M.S.U.’s 150th birthday, it features cake batter ice cream, cake pieces and a green frosting swirl. If you want a little lunch with your dessert, the Dairy Store also serves a legendary grilled cheese sandwich, hot and cold drinks and a variety of cheese made in the Dairy Plant, including bags of cheese curds and the intriguing Chocolate Cheese Confection.

Fabiano’s Candies — It can’t get sweeter! For LCN

When Fabiano’s Candies calls itself a “family business, they aren’t kidding. The store has been operation since 1924, when present owner Madeline Fabiano Blair’s father convinced his own father to buy a candy shop in Holland, Mich.. Since then, the business has been run by Blair’s father, then by Blair and her sister; and is now in the capable hands of Blair and her son Steven. The sweet shop moved to Lansing in 1935, and it’s

been a local fixture ever since. The store was named the best candy shop in Lansing and East Lansing.

Tasty options

Candy is made in the kitchen behind the Michigan Avenue storefront, and there are a dizzying number of options. They include creams, nuts, truffles, cordial cherries, sea foam, Peanut Butter Melt-A-Ways and caramels. Many flavors are available in a sugar-free version, and the almond toffee, Pecan Turtles and peanut clusters are cus-

tomer favorites. When asked who shops at the store, Blair says “everyone! Men buy as much chocolate as women do, and moms come in to buy our candy for their children because it doesn’t have preservatives in it.” Fabiano’s Candies is known throughout the state, ships across the country, and once made a chocolate Oldsmobile for Willard Scott. At the end of the day, though, Blair says people love it because it’s “really just an old-fashioned candy store.”

Mike O’Connor: A mechanic everyone trusts Dawn Parker

| dlparker@lsj.com

OKEMOS – Mike O’Connor loves working at Wood’s Okemos Marathon so much, he has never forgotten his hiring date. O’Connor, selected by readers as Best Mechanic in the 2011 Peoples Choice Awards voting, celebrates his 13th year with the family-owned station on June 19. “Customers trust him an awful lot,” Wood’s owner John Wood said. “They have a lot of trust in him. It’s worked out very well, having him here.” The Lansing native previously worked at two mid-Michigan Chevrolet dealers, and said he first hired in at Wood’s to be a wrecker driver. He was a car buff from way back, though, recalling having taken a car apart as a teen-ager. “The wheel bearings were all torn apart. My dad didn’t believe I could put it back together,” said O’Connor, who showed his dad he could do it. O’Connor trained at Lansing Community College, and along the way worked three years for the state of Michigan as a mechanic. Wood’s, he says, is a good place to work. “The customers and the guys I work

with … the environment here is so nice,” O’Connor said. Many customers confide in him as they would a friend, calling him and asking him what they should do about issues with their cars. Some even call while they’re on vacation, he said. Parents with students away at college have called and asked for their children’s cars to be towed to Wood’s so O’Connor can look at them, and one former area resident drives in whenever she has a problem. “She told me, ‘I just don’t trust anyone but you’,” he related. That trust factor does have to be there, O’Connor said, similar to a physician’s office. O’Connor and the team at Wood’s ensures customers return by doing things right. “We make sure every car is fixed the first time. When we do make a mistake, you are a priority,” he said. “You (readers) were actually voting for all of Wood’s. We all participate in making this work.” Wood’s Okemos Marathon is at 2104 Hamilton Road. For more information, call (517) 349-0730.

Thank You

Mike O’Connor, voted by Towne Courier readers as Best Mechanic in the 2011 People’s Choice Awards, has been with Wood’s Okemos Marathon for 13 years. Both customers and co-workers make Wood’s a great place to work, O’Connor said. DAWN PARKER|LCN

EAST LANSING – “You should charge admission,” someone recently told Roy Saper. While many in the community might regard Saper Galleries like a museum, the art for sale is always open to the public. The accessibility – and the beauty – might have had a hand in Saper Galleries being chosen as Favorite Art Gallery in the 2011 Peoples Choice Awards voting. “We are definitely honored by those who chose to recognize us as their favorite,” Roy Saper said. “We continue to do our work to bring and show works of art to the community.” Saper Galleries, which celebrates its 33rd anniversary in 2011, offers a wide variety of paintings, sculp-

“We continue to do our work to bring and show works of art to the community.” ROY SAPER Saper Galleries owner ture and other works of art. Ample natural sunlight floods the rooms, showing off the art to its best advantage. One way the gallery is like a museum to many, Saper said, is that it’s open to all. In a typical day, the staff sees everyone from grade-school classes to casual browsers in off the street to “people who could come in and buy anything they want,” he said. The gallery has occasionally hosted special exhibitions that have drawn a crowd; for example, a Dr. Seuss exhibition drew 20,000 visitors during its run. Whatever their buying

power, Saper and his staff are extensively customerfocused, serving clients worldwide. ‘We exist to find solutions for people. They come in, they send e-mail, they live chat – they want us to help them,” he said. The gallery will do whatever it can to satisfy a customer’s heart’s desire. “For us to say no … that says we can’t help you,” Saper said. “No one can say they asked for something from Saper Galleries and we didn’t come through.” The gallery is at 433 Albert Ave. For more information, call (517) 351-0815 or go online to www.sapergalleries.com .

WILLIAMSTON — With its serene frontage on the Red Cedar River, the RiverHouse Inn might seem like a logical place for weddings, showers, rehearsal dinners and other romantic occasions. But the restaurant, now in its third year, seems to be gaining ground as a pure dining destination, as well. Readers of the Williamston Enterprise voted the RiverHouse best for brunch, lunch and dinner in the 2011 People’s Choice Awards, along with best steak and the most romantic place in the Williamston area. “We try to keep things fresh and local, whenever possible,” co-owner Sue Nichani said. “And we like to change things up to keep things interesting.”

New chef Kevin Walsh’s summer dinner menu includes goat cheese lasagna, Lake Michigan whitefish and hanger steak with salsa verde and potato fondue. Appetizers include risotto and chicken confit fritters with a garlic-lemon aioli and Maryland-style crab cakes with Old Bay aioli. Walsh’s cold gazpacho soup is made with cucumbers, onions, cumin, corriander, hazelnuts and mint. The lunch menu includes a burger, a reuben sandwich and chicken cordon bleu. “We’re really, really happy with the direction Kevin is moving us in,” Nichani said. She and co-owner Scott Simmons envisioned a bedand-breakfast when they bought the old house on W. Grand River Ave. in 2006, only to learn they couldn’t

use it for that purpose, Nichani said. Neither had prior experience in the restaurant business, she said. They spent two years renovating the building before opening in 2008 with a coffee shop in the front. It now has seating for 80 in several rooms inside and 100 outside, either on the deck or at tables along the riverbank. The restaurant holds regular wine-tasting events by the river and hosts rehearsal dinners, wedding showers and other types of parties. Weddings have been held at a gazebo near the water, Nichani said. “We have a nice following of people who have stayed with us from the beginning,” she said. “And I still see new faces every day. There are people who have just heard about the restaurant.”

Longtime barber wins People’s Choice Award Ken Palmer kpalmer@lsj.com

WILLIAMSTON — When Rahn Wright started cutting hair in Williamston, you could buy a glass of beer at The Bucket for a nickel and a haircut cost $1.50 - 25 cents more for a flat top. Times have certainly changed. But Wright is still around, doing what he’s been doing for nearly five decades. And, no, he’s not planning to retire. “People want to know when I’m going to quit,” he said. “But I’m not.” That’s good news to readers of the Williamston Enterprise, who once again voted him best barber in the 2011 People’s Choice Awards. Now 69, the bearded, plain-speaking Wright has been barbering in town

since 1963, the vast majority of that time at the Tonsorial House on S. Putnam St., near the main intersection of town. Wright bought the old building, which once housed a lawnmower shop, in the mid-1970s and still heats the barber shop with a wood stove installed in 1975. The shop is decorated with a zebra hide draped over a wooden bench, a badger pelt on the wall across from the barber chair and an African Blesbuck mount on another wall — evidence of Wright’s penchant for hunting and shooting sports. After hours, the shop becomes “kind of a hangout place,” he said. “We talk politics, some religion, but not too much,’’ he said. “Discussions can get kind of heated in here

“Discussions can get kind of heated in here sometimes.” RAHN WRIGHT barber

sometimes.” Today, traffic volume is down from what it was even five years ago, he said. But Wright doesn’t plan to go anywhere anytime soon. “The secret, I think, to making a living is to be here, be dependable, give the best service you can to people and thank ‘em,” he said. “Do your best to keep from sticking your nose in people’s business. And whatever you know, keep it to yourself.”

Rahn Wright is this year’s People’s Choice winner for favorite barber. KEN PALMER/LCN

Favorite eye doctor Lemon puts patients first

31

Ken Palmer kpalmer@lsj.com

WILLIAMSTON — Dr. Lee Lemon has been a fixture in Williamston for nearly three decades. But in all likelihood, longevity doesn’t entirely explain why Williamston Enterprise readers keep voting him best eye doctor in the annual People’s Choice Awards. Lee received a People’s Choice Award for 2011. Lemon didn’t offer any long-winded theories about how that came to be. “I think I’m a trustworthy person,” he said. “We put patients first. That’s probably one reason.” The Battle Creek native did his undergraduate work at Michigan State University and received

Dr. Lee Lemon has won more People’s Choice recognition as favorite eye doctor. KEN PALMER/LCN his optometry degree from Illinois College of Optometry. He signed on with longtime Williamston eye doctor Boyd Banwell in 1981 and took over the clinic from Banwell in 1983. That same year, he

moved to his current location in the blue medical building at 425 W. Grand River Ave. Lee’s office merged with Lansing Opthalmology last October. But he continues to care for patients in Williamston as he always has.

Lucy’s Pampered Pets favorite pet groomer Ken Palmer kpalmer@lsj.com

WILLIAMSTOWN TWP. —

Lucy Molina’s recipe for success is pretty much summed up on the sign in front of her shop. It says: Lucy’s Pampered Pets. “We pamper the pets, and we pamper the clients,” said Molina, who opened the grooming business on W. Grand River Ave. about five years ago. “We just really try to stand out. We’re more personalized.” Readers of the Williamston Enterprise picked Molina as their favorite pet groomer in the 2011 People’s Choice Awards. A Webberville native,

“We just really try to stand out. We’re more personalized.” LUCY MOLINA owner Molina began working with animals in Spokane, Wash., first with the Humane Society and then with a veterinarian. Her husband, John, was in the Air Force, and the couple moved frequently, she said. She worked for a vet in Okemos before opening her own salon in a small plaza at W. Grand River and Zimmer Road. “I’d always worked for vets as a groomer,” she said. “This is my very first place.” Molina works with four

other people in the shop. They offer a full range of grooming services, including mud baths and wraps. They also board and sell pet products. Service is the key, she said. “We’re flexible on hours and we’re flexible on boarding,” she said. “The dogs get a treat after their grooming. We have a lot of pets with special needs, and we also do pickups.” The dogs get all the grooming, although cats too are tended.
