“I’m a designer by nature. I’m the kind of person who, if I look at an object I think, what can this be?”
When Richard Turbin bought the building at 125 S. Cochran Ave. in 1993 half of the massive 17,000-square-foot space was boarded up. “Nobody wanted it,” he said, of the property. “I had to gut the whole building.” The work included removing 300,000 pounds of plaster to expose the brick underneath so Turbin could restore the building, built in 1858. Today Windwalkers Antiques and Fine Arts Gallery offers a mix of the unique and artistic — with paintings covering the walls and many things to look at and buy. Readers of the Charlotte Shopping Guide have voted the business it’s People’s Choice award winner for “Favorite Antiques” spot this year. But Turbin said the operation will become a much more active art gallery over the next three months. Antiques will still be a part of the gallery, but its owner said showing and selling art will be a primary focus. “I love art and all of its different forms,” said Turbin.
RICHARD TURBIN
Owner/Operator of Windwalker Antiques
“I’m a designer by nature. I’m the kind of person who, if I look at an object I think, what can this be?” Turbin is an active member of the Charlotte-based Experience Art group. The organization organized its firstever “Art Walk,” during this month’s Celebrate Charlotte Festival. The walk showcased area art at various downtown businesses. Turbin said he hopes that his gallery can be an “art hub” in the near future. He believes the Charlotte community supports the idea. “I think the interest is there,” he explained. “There’s a lot of creative and artistic people in the area. They just don’t have a venue.”

Mossholder is community’s ‘Favorite Pastor’ Rachel Greco
lic Church two years ago. The parish serves 700 CHARLOTTE — Rev. local families and boasts Francis Mossholder began a growing Catholic grade his work at St. Mary Catho- school among its attributes. | rgreco@lsj.com
But Mossholder said the people who worship there make his job worthwhile. “It’s a good place,” said Mossholder, of Charlotte.
“And an excellent community.” The feeling is mutual. Readers of the Charlotte Shopping Guide have named Mossholder their People’s Choice award winner for “Favorite Pastor” for 2011. Mossholder said the most challenging part of his job is keeping in contact with the Catholic parishes’ sick
and home bound members. “I’m their pastor so I should know them,” he explains, and he does his part by visiting all of them at least once a month. Mossholder has been a member of the priesthood for 23 years and spent 10 of them as a missionary in Japan. “If I could go back
I’d do that in a heartbeat,” he said, of the work abroad. But here in Charlotte what he values the most is the relationships with people. “I strive to teach the Gospel without compromise,” said Mossholder. “I just love my ministry and I think interacting with the people.”

Char-Lanes a popular past time in Charlotte Rachel Greco
| rgreco@lsj.com
CHARLOTTE — Char-Lanes has been
a family-run business since 1982, when co-owner David Jackson’s parents bought the bowling alley. Built in 1961, the business at 1780 Lansing Road now has 24 lanes, serves meals and snacks and is a meeting place for recreational bowler and high school athletes alike. In fact, the rise in high school bowling has had a major impact on the Charlotte bowling alley. Charlotte High School teams compete and practice at the facility — along with Potterville and Eaton Rapids teams. “Literally, there’s 40 to 50 people that will show up just to watch the meets,” explained Jackson. “And it’s going to keep growing.” Charlanes popularity hasn’t stopped growing either. Readers of the Charlotte Shopping Guide have named the bowling alley their People’s Choice award winner for “Favorite Bowling Alley” this year. “In today’s world we have less money

“Where else can you go and play a sport where you can compete with your kids?” DAVID JACKSON Co-owner Char-Lanes to spend,” said Jackson. But he said residents can bowl one game for less than $2.50. And for the owner of the local bowling alley, the business has become a spot for friends to gather. “You become friends with everyone you bowl with. It’s a social sport,” said Jackson. “Where else can you go and play a sport where you can compete with your kids?” And Jackson also believes in taking an active role in the Charlotte community. “I think you need to if you run a business and if you don’t it’s a mistake.” Jackson said he’s proud of the business and happy to have it here. “I think it’s a pretty good bowling center for a small town,” he said.

Snow voted top vet mjwhite@lsj.com
EATON RAPIDS — Maybe it’s the fact that Dr. Jamie Snow loves animals so much that she already knew in second grade that she wanted to be a veterinarian. Or it could be the friendly office atmosphere at Snow’s Animal Health Care on Michigan Street, including the two happy pooches who greet you on every visit — black lab Omar and Boston terrier Ike. Then again, it could be Snow’s great strength as a “people person,” who is willing to spend the time and energy it takes to talk to customers about any pet problem or concern. All of the above have garnered Jamie Snow the 2011 People’s Choice Award for the area’s
Favorite veterinarian Dr. Jamie Snow of Snow Animal Health Care with her two canine office buddies: black lab Omar and Boston terrier Ike. MARY JO WHITE/LCN “Favorite Vet.” Snow, a 1999 graduate of MSU’s vet school, is obviously exactly where her talents call her to be. “I like science, problem solving and working with people’” is how she puts it. In standard Snow fashion, however, she’s quick to extend accolades to her staff, two full-time and two
part-time employees. “We work as a team,” Snow said. “(And) we try hard to provide good service.” Snow’s business carries prescription pet food, grooming brushes and other supplies, but those aren’t her main focus. She’s really into educating pet owners so they understand the reasons why she recommends a certain course of treatment, answering all their questions in the process. Eaton Rapids Police Chief Paul Malewski was in recently to check on a prescription food for his diabetic cat. Does he mind paying extra for it or injecting the pet twice a day? No way. ““The cat’s a member of the family,” he said. Dr. Jamie Snow understands completely.

EATON RAPIDS — “He’s a jolly guy,” said Eaton Rapids Fire Chief Roger McNutt, in reference to Eaton Rapids’ favorite firefighter, Jeff Dieter. Dieter, a 19-year veteran of the City of Eaton Rapids’ Fire Department was the top pick of Eaton Rapids Community News for People’s Choice for “Favorite Firefighter” in this year’s awards. “It’s really great to know people thought I was doing a good job,” said Dieter. Dieter, age 51, has lived in Eaton Rapids for the past 26 years. He and his wife Pam have three sons, ranging in age from 21 to 30. He has been a firefighter and Medical First Responder (MFR) since 1992, the same year he went to work for the city fire department. He said he got interested in pursuing a career as a firefighter after hearing “lots of interesting stories” from a friend who worked with the department. He said he continues to enjoy the work. “I really like the camaraderie,” Dieter said. “It’s a family-type atmosphere (in the department) and everyone gets along.” His boss, Fire Chief McNutt, said

Shelly-Odell recognized by ER community Carla Bumstead For Lansing Community Newspapers
EATON RAPIDS — Living and working in a small town has many rewards. But when you operate a funeral home, and “everyone knows you and you know everyone,” being selected as the community’s “Favorite Funeral Home” is extra special. Jennifer Mills, one of the owners and operators of the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids, said being named as a 2011 People’s Choice winner was very gratifying. “It’s really an honor,” Mills said. “It means a lot when people choose our funeral home to help them during one of the most difficult times in their lives.” Jennifer Mills and her husband Mike joined Jordan and Kathy Odell at Shelly-Odell Funeral Home in 2009. They moved from Bath and have been actively involved in the community ever since. Both are active members at St. Peter
Church, volunteer for Meals On Wheels and volunteer at the Eaton Rapids Public Schools. Mike is a member of the Eaton Rapids Lions Club and the St. Peter Knights of Columbus. Jennifer is a member of the Eaton Rapids Medical Center’s Auxiliary, Eaton Rapids Rotary Club and the Business and Professional Women’s Club. The couple has four children, ranging in ages from 27 to 15. The two youngest attend the Eaton Rapids Public Schools. “We love small-town living,” Mills said. “There is a strong sense of community, and it’s like a family.” Mills, originally from Mt. Pleasant, said she grew up in the funeral home business. Her father and two brothers worked together to run a family business. Her husband Mike got into the business 16 years ago and, prior to moving to Eaton Rapids, worked for funeral homes in Carson City and Lansing.
“Mike has the perfect personality for this type of work,” Jennifer said. “He is knowledgeable and compassionate. People can truly ‘lean on him.’” The Shelly-Odell Funeral Home offers a full line of services — including funerals, cremations, pre-planning, video tributes for full-service families, online condolences, grief-support referrals and more. The funeral home itself has a lot of room and can accommodate up to 400 people. The rooms can also be subdivided for smaller gatherings. Jennifer Mills expressed her thanks to the Eaton Rapids community for selecting ShellyOdell as its favorite funeral home. “Working in this type of business has many rewards,” Mills said. “We are there to listen, and I have heard so many heartwarming stories over the years.”
Shelly-Odell is Eaton Rapids’ favorite funeral home. CARLA BUMSTEAD/LCN She added that she and her husband are both pleased to know at least one of their sons has expressed an interest in going into the family business. “It’s a wonderful thing to be there for the people in your community at a time when
support and compassion is so often needed,” she said. Shelly-Odell Funeral Home has a full Web site at shellyodell.com. The business phone is 663-5331 and the address is 518 S. Main St.

HOLT - Bargain Books may not be a flashy name and if you haven’t seen many advertisements about the store you aren’t the only one. And in a world with national bookstore chains offering in-store coffee shops, it is Bargain Books in the Kroger plaza that has won the 2011 People’s Choice award for best bookstore. Manager Laura Spanburg said the key is word of mouth. “As the word got out we were able to stay in business and now are happy to be here in Holt,” Spanburg said. Bargain Books has been in Holt for seven and a half years. Although they do offer a used book exchange, the business sells new books always at discount prices. Spanburg said how they do it is they purchase overstock from other companies and sell it in store. “We get about four skids a day full of books,” she said. “We always are getting new books. Last week we got eight skids”

With 1,000 per skid that’s alot of books that must be sold, which means a great deal for customers. “We’ve been real fortunate,” Spanburg said. “We try to offer something new on a regular basis, like a special sale on a certain genre.” She said it is nice to be able to compete with the larger chains that years ago closed down many “mom and pop” type bookstores. “The table turned in a way once the economy changed,” she said. “And now the challenge is the internet sales.”

HOLT READERS’ FAV PIZZA PLACE
WILL KANGAS wkangas@lsj.com
HOLT – Fat Boys Pizza is an institution. Despite an onslaught of competition, Holt’s pizza place remains a steady business that hasn’t changed much because whatever it is doing is working. “I believe in consistency,” Manager Dave Dec said. “I know it seems simplistic, but that is the philosophy. You can call it old school if you want.” Fat Boys has consistently won the People’s Choice award for best pizza in Holt ever since the award began. “Take care of what’s in the box,” Dec said. “Product, service, everything.”
Dec has been asked to franchise Fat Boys elsewhere in the Lansing area. The answer so far has been no. “Maybe some day when the time and situation is right,” he said. “It’s fun to have one great store. I’ve learned my lessons.” Dec is a hands on manager and is often seen working behind the counter. He said Fat Boys has grown into the community and vice versa. “For many people, having Fat Boys is essential when you come back to Holt,” he said. “It’s home.” About that $5 deal that is so popular right now, Dec said he tried it years ago at a national chain in Ft. Wayne. “Our numbers were down and I thought about trying to work the math for
a $5 large pizza,” he said. “It was a success, but at the time corporate didn’t like it. Another store was struggling and the manager tried it as well because he figured if he was going to get shut down he might as well go down swinging and it helped sales, but corporate didn’t like it so the guy went to work for Little Ceasers and the rest is history.” Dec said he has no qualms about the $5 deal, he just wonders what is going to happen once the economy rebounds and people are going to look for more quality. “Where can they go from there?” he said. As for Fat Boys, people have been going there for over 20 years in Holt. A truly consistant model of success.
The writing is on the wall. Fat Boys is a Holt tradition. WILL KANGAS\LCN

Dear Holt,
Volz Family CHIROPRACTIC PLLC
Kylene Volz, DC
I have been meaning to write the Holt community a thank you note for quite a while for warmly welcoming my family and I into your amazing community for the last 6 years. A great big thank you as well for voting me Holt’s favorite Chiropractor!! I am truly honored and humbled, and as many of you know, emotional about the award. I am extremely passionate about Chiropractic, love what I do, and could not imagine doing anything else in life. I feel blessed that Chiropractic chose me and like I always say, “I have the greatest patients in the world who make it incredibly easy to come into the office each day.” You make me the Chiropractor that I am so thank you, thank you, thank you!! I would not be the person I am without a few other people in my life so let me take this opportunity to thank them as well. First and foremost, my amazing partner in life, my husband, Ryan, who is the Registered Dietitian in our office, as well as, the greatest father to our 3 wonderful children, Jake (3 yo), Jordan (1 yo) and Hayden (10 days old). I could not imagine a moment of my life without you in it. There is nothing, and I mean nothing, as awesome as being a mom and a Chiropractor and balancing them both so easily. That is a big reason why I chose to become a Chiropractor in the first place. My children are the most pure form of love on earth and I am so thankful they chose me to be their mommy!! They inspire me each and every day to give, to love, and to serve in abundance. My family is often times at the office hanging out when I am there and that is what a family practice is all about ~ your family & my family getting healthy and having fun together. Also, our practice would not be what it is without the unwavering support of my best friend, and fellow Chiropractor in the office, Dr. Rachel Herman. Thank you for always being as equally committed to our practice and patients. You are an amazing woman, Chiropractor, and mother! Also, thank you to our hard working and supportive staff members. You are the greatest team members one could ask for!! It wouldn’t be right if I didn’t include my unbelievably supportive parents who encourage me everyday to work hard and be happy. You truly inspire me to be a better person. Lastly, but perhaps most importantly, thank you to our incredible patients who make EVERY SINGLE DAY a wonderful day to come to the office and adjust you. You make all of us smile, laugh, and in return we hope to do the same, as well as, provide you and your families with the best Chiropractic care each and every time we see you to optimize your health and improve your quality of life!!
Yours in Chiropractic Health,
Dr. Kylene Volz

LANSING — Texas Roadhouse is the best place to eat a steak. According to readers in Holt, Texas Roadhouse is deserving of winning the 2011 People’s Choice Award because it is simply good on a consistent basis. Managing Partner Scott Anglebrandt said there isn’t a “secret recipe,” but it comes down to how it is prepared. “We use fresh meat, not frozen like some places,” Anglebrandt said. “We have a person who cuts our meat on a daily basis as well.” This meat market/ restaurant approach has a positive influence on the end result, he said. “This is the way we do it nationwide,” he said. The result is growth by Texas
Roadhouse in the country. Despite a line to be seated on a constant basis, Anglebrandt said the south Lansing roadhouse is not one of the top in terms of sales in the country. “However, we are doing well in terms of the state of Michigan,” he said. The place makes it clear as you walk in, with large fresh cuts of steak in a display much like a market — daring you to order it. Anglebrandt said the meat is tenderized everyday as well, which makes it easier to eat. The seasoning is a simple garlic and salt combination. “Nothing fancy,” he said. The restaurant is also involved in the Holt community though visits to elementary schools by Andy the Armadillo and sponsorship of community

MASON — If you placed historic photographs of Mason State Bank sideto-side, you’d see horses tied to wagons, Model T’s, 1940s-era automobiles and modern cars. That’s because the bank has been in business for 125 years, and is to celebrate that mark on June 28 with a ribboncutting ceremony and a rededication of the building at 322 S. Jefferson St. Mason State Bank also is this year’s People’s Choice winner for favorite bank. “From the modes of transportation, you can trace the history of the bank,” said Timothy Gaylord, Mason State Bank president and CEO, on the old-time photographs.
Bob Warnke, assistant vice president of branch administration and marketing, attributes the bank’s longevity to at least one fact: Mason being a local agricultural center. In 1886, John M. Dresser organized the Farmers Bank of Mason, acting as its first cashier — then a principal executive officer of a bank — until 1893. In 1962, the Board of Directors decided the bank’s name, “Farmers Bank,” should be changed to Mason State Bank to reflect all its business. However, Warnke said, “I think farmers are an independent lot, and I think that independence shows.” Still, a bank doesn’t stay in business for 125 years without keeping its customers happy. Plus, there’s the local
aspect. Gaylord said, “We make loans to our neighbors, and we have to do it right because we see them face to face.” The bank, he said, also understands traditional values and focuses on how “we’d want to be treated on the other side.” The bulk of bank business, Gaylord said, comes from single-family home mortgages, and then commercial real estate. “It’s a partnership,” Warnke said of the commercial market. Even though Gaylord acknowledged a lot hasn’t changed in banking, it can’t be denied that the business has evolved — to Internet banking, direct deposits, debit cards and ATM machines. Gaylord stressed the bank still has people on hand who understand

MASON — Being a good hair stylist involves more than being adept with a curling iron. It means connecting with clients too. That friendly attitude helped propel Niki LaBelle of Salon 130 to being named the People’s Choice winner for favorite hair stylist. LaBelle has been at Salon 130, located at 130 W. Ash St., for about a year. “My boss is amazing,” LaBelle said of Jena Killer. “Right when I met her, I thought I definitely could deal with this.” LaBelle said she performs many coloring services for her clients, but her skill set is varied. “I enjoy all the different things because it never

MASON — It helps to know and hone your niche in the business world. That’s probably one of the reasons the Ace Hardware at 340 S. Cedar St. was named People’s Choice winner for favorite hardware store. “We’re really into repair,” said Manager Chris Iott, who’s been with the store for 12 years. “We’re not into home improvement like a lot of the big box stores.” (It also helps that customers can park right in front of the store, Iott noted.) Iott said customers who patronize Ace Hardware perform their own plumbing and repairs. “I do a pretty good business with

paint,” Iott said. “Paint’s probably our No. 1 department.” Ace also has items for the gardener, including bedding plants, lawn mowers and wheelbarrows — all of which are lined up in front of the store — and provides mower repair. Iott agreed with the idea that hardware stores are recession-proof in difficult economies because people tend to fix things themselves. “There’s a pretty consistent flow of traffic,” he said. Twenty employees work in the 10,000-square-foot store, Iott said. Ace Hardware is open from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday.

Thank you Mason for voting Mason State Bank as Mason’s favorite bank the second year in a row! A special congratulation goes out to Megan Kolberg who was voted Mason’s favorite teller. All this celebrating is just icing on our 125th birthday cake as we are celebrating 125 years of dedicated service to our community. In June 1886, Mason resident John M. Dresser recognized that Mason needed a bank that served the needs of the entire community. The history of the city and the bank are intertwined and we thank our loyal customers who have formed a rewarding relationship with us that have thrived for 125 years.
