PORTLAND — The City of Portland received good marks from a recent community attitudes survey. Portland city manager Tom Dempsey presented the results of the survey during the March 7 Portland City Council meeting. Dempsey noted that among the 177 responses, 61 percent gave the city an overall rating of either above average or excellent. “And in the area of the quality of Portland as a place to live, 96 percent of the respondents rated the city average or better,” said Dempsey. “That included 36 percent who rated the city excellent and 51 percent who rated the city above average.” Among the results of the survey were: • 68 percent felt that the city has been growing at the right pace. • 41 percent felt that commercial growth was needed while 34 percent felt that industrial growth should be the focus. The survey also questioned residents on
how they felt about certain areas over the last five years. Among those results were: • 31 percent felt that the sense of community had improved in the last five years with 64 percent rating it the same. • 63 felt that the quality of the downtown had improved in the last five years while 26 percent rated it the same. • 69 percent felt that the sense of safety in their neighborhood was the same as it was five years ago while 21 percent felt that it was better. Dempsey said the surveys were sent out with the city’s tax bills, which may have led to the city receiving results from a specific demographic. “50 percent of the respondents indicated that they were retired, and only had two people living in their household,” said Dempsey. “Also 72 percent indicated that they did not have children living at home.” Dempsey said that city staff would consider distributing the next survey with the city’s utility bills in hopes of getting a wider variety of responses.

Board members gave Dumas a rating of 8.41 on a scale of 1 to 9. Board president Tanya Marcum read a summary of the board’s evaluation of Dumas, stating that he was a “key asset” for the school district and community.
“The board is uniform in our appreciation of Mr. Dumas’ continued excellent performance for our children, our district and our community,” said Marcum. “His leadership and direction are always appreciated in the areas of budgeting, finances, and school educational policies. Although it may not feel as though spring is in the air, Kindergarten Round Up is just around the corner. Staff at Oakwood Elementary School has begun the process for welcoming our newest Raiders to the district. KinSuperintendent’s dergarten Round Up will take place on Wednesday, corner April 20, and Thursday, April 21. I encourage all parCharles ents of the Class of 2024 Dumas to make every effort to attend. Oakwood Elementary will be offering an informational parent workshop for any parent who wishes to learn more about our developmental kindergarten and kindergarten programs on Thursday, March 24, from 6:30-8 p.m. Teachers will be on hand to provide parents with a better understanding of the differences in the two programs and answer questions or concerns that parents may have. Free child care will be provided for the workshop. You must pre-register for both Kindergarten Round Up and the parent workshop. Please call Oakwood Elementary School at (517) 647-2991 at your earliest convenience to secure your spot in both of these opportunities. Kindergarten Round Up is the first step in starting a child’s 13-year journey through public education off on the right foot. Participating in Kindergarten Round Up
sends a strong message to your child that education is important and that starting school is a great opportunity to meet new people and learn new things. Many parents worry that their child may not be ready to start school. Legally, every child who is 5 years old by Dec. 1 has the right to attend kindergarten and is considered “ready.” School readiness however, refers not only to the child’s intellectual skills, but also to their social skills, emotional growth and physical development including group interactions, language development, selfhelp, self-confidence, independence, sharing space and equipment, small and large muscle coordination, problem solving, and an interest in learning new concepts. When your child attends Kindergarten Round Up, they will receive a developmental screening by one of our early childhood educators. The screening tool provides us with a snapshot of your child’s skills and behaviors that are appropriate for their age and developmental level. Your child will also receive hearing, vision, and speech and language screenings. As a parent, you will also be able to provide insight into your child’s developmental level by completing a parent and preschool survey. Once all the information is collected, a teacher will meet with you to discuss the appropriate placement for your child. Portland Public Schools currently offers two types See

Infertility One of the most devastating problems facing many couples today is not being able to have a child - infertility. I see this in many patients that I have had the good fortune to meet. The anguish is nothing short of heartbreaking for many. Many such couples have been everywhere - fertility clinics, have had fertility enhancing drugs, vitamin injections, counseling, etc., all to no avail. In my own experience, I have found most cases of infertility to be fairly one-sided. In other words, I have found that it is usually women that seem to be at fault and unable to achieve pregnancy. Now, do not get me wrong, I am not blaming women for this difficulty in any way, and this is not a sexist remark, but the problem, I have observed, seems to be more with women than with men. Let me explain.
LJ-0100074293
Let’s look at this in the light of a couple not being able to achieve pregnancy: In most couples who are labeled “INFERTILE” (and you know how much I detest labels) it seems that the egg is not able to make it through the fallopian tube to meet the sperm. Unless that union is allowed to take place, there is no pregnancy, hence no baby. Not a good thing.
As I mentioned, the function of the muscles of the fallopian tubes is to propel the egg from one end to the other, in order to meet the sperm. In cases of infertility, however, this does not take place. Why would the muscles that are designed and programmed to perform that very special function every month, decide suddenly that they simply won’t do it? Well, the answer is quite simple - it is not their decision. The muscles of your body do not decide, on their own, what to do. They are literally ordered or not ordered to do their job. In cases of infertility, I have found that the muscles are simply not able to take the egg from one end of the fallopian tube to the other. In most cases, it is the fault of the nervous system which controls that very function. In most cases I have found that the culprit is a vertebral subluxation, generally in the lower part of the spine, which interferes with the manner in which the fallopian tubes would normally function. By correcting the subluxation, and allowing the nervous system to then be able to control the function of the fallopian tubes normally, I have found that couples can then achieve pregnancy.

Women are much more familiar with this function whereas most men are not. For you who are not all that aware of exactly how this all takes place, let’s look at the following. When a woman ovulates, the egg goes down one fallopian tube one month and then down the other fallopian tube the next month. In other words, it tends to alternate to give one or the other a break. The egg starts at one end of the fallopian tube and ends up at the uterus or womb at the other. The egg does not swim or have any flippers, arms, or legs, and so it is carried along by what we call passive transport. In other words, it is simply a bystander going for a ride; much like a ride in a convoluted water tube of a water park. The reason this takes place is because of a very exact function of the different muscles that make up the walls of the fallopian tubes. They literally “squeeze” the egg from one end of tube to the other. The purpose of this function is to meet the sperm at the other end so that fertilization can take place and a baby starts to be developed. In other words, the egg starts at one end of the fallopian tube and the muscles of the tube gently squeeze it from one end to the other. This process is called peristalsis and is very similar to swallowing while you eat; the muscles in your esophagus, the tube which you swallow food through, literally guide what you have just swallowed, all the way down into your stomach. The same goes with the fallopian tube.
Let’s look at this even closer for a moment:

of kindergarten placements; developmental kindergarten and kindergarten. Both developmental kindergarten and kindergarten run Monday-Friday for one-half day either in the morning or the afternoon. Both programs emphasize the importance of building literacy and math skills, and provide an exposure to music, art, and physical education. Portland Public Schools also provides an early childhood program for students ages 3-5 who may have special needs that cannot be met in the regular classroom setting alone. The developmental kindergarten program provides your child with a wonderful opportunity to work on their physical, social, emotional and intellectual skills in a more developmentally appropriate setting. Children in this program learn best through self-directed, hands on and open-ended learning experiences. Children are placed in this program for a variety of reasons,
but mostly because they are simply not ready for the demands placed on them by a traditional kindergarten classroom. Our kindergarten program is designed to meet the needs of a child who has demonstrated and expressed an interest in learning more tasks and eagerly performs these new tasks on an independent basis. Generally children who have been placed in a kindergarten classroom have had a previous school experience, they are eager to learn, participate in the learning process, can listen attentively to directions, and show an interest in reading, writing and number concepts. Your involvement in your child’s education is the first step in ensuring your child’s academic success. Oakwood Elementary School is excited to begin forming a partnership with you to help ensure your child reaches his/her highest potential in the years ahead! LINDEN — Senior Lauren Epple scored 20 points to lead Williamston to a 43-39 Class B regional semifinal win over CAAC White rival Portland. It was the third time the teams have played each other this season. Portland won the first matchup 38-28. Williamston won the second game 53-44. Portland coach Ray Kimball said that his team left it all on the floor. “I’m proud of these kids, they’ve battled all season long,” Kimball said. “There’s hundreds of teams that wish they had the opportunity to play in a game like this. Give Williamston a lot of credit, they withstood a couple of hits from us and figured out a way to win.” ST. Epple scored eight points in the fourth quarter, including scoring five unanswered points when Portland had closed to within one point of the Hornets. Six of Epple’s points came from the free-throw line after she was fouled twice while launching three-point shots. “Practice, we work on them all week and I went in early to practice them,” Epple said about her accuracy from the free-throw line. “I missed quite a few of them in last week’s game and I wanted to make sure it didn’t happen tonight.” Williamston pulled out to a seven point lead on an 11-4 run late in the first quarter that lasted two minutes into the second quarter to go up 18-11. Portland kept chipping away at the Hornet lead. A pair of baskets by the Raiders’ Sarah Trierweller tied the score at 20 with a minute left in the first half. Trierweller

led the Raiders with 12 points. Both teams struggled to score in the third quarter. Williamston scored four points and Portland added five. “We knew we had to come out and play really physical, they are a really physical team and so are we,” Williamston senior Michaela Marble said. “We knew it was our defense that would carry us.” Marble opened the fourth quarter with a pair of baskets in the first minute to put the Hornets up by five. Her first basket was a drive through Portland defenders for a layup. The second, a steal and a full-court run to the hoop. “You’ve got to credit Ray (Kimball, Portland coach) and the girls, they are so tough to score against, they do

Portland boys fall to Cougars in district opener
Raiders end season with overall record of 11-10
Portland head coach Dave Pettit said that Rush, and his team’s miscues, dug a hole out of which the Raiders could not climb. “We had way too many turnovers that they turned into easy baskets,” Pettit said. “Rush was a big difference tonight, he’s just tough for us to guard.” By SCOTT YOSHONIS Lansing Catholic coach Darren Zwick said that the syoshonis@lsj.com main strength of his team is its depth, the ability to bring LANSING — Portland ended its 2010-11 boys basket- a player like Rush off the bench. ball season with a record of 11-10 after their third loss of the year to a league rival. Cooper Rush scored 27 points to lead Lansing Catholic to a 79-51 over the Raiders in the first round of Class B district play on March 7. Jared Krausz led Portland with 21 points and Hunter VanRiper added 10 for the Raiders, who jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the game. Lansing Catholic went on a run from there, scoring 15 of the next 18 points in the game to take an eightpoint lead before jumpers from Nathan Huss and Krausz, the latter from beyond the arc, pulled the Cougars back somewhat and cut the Portland deficit to 15-12 going into the second quarter. That would be as close as the Raiders would get, as Lansing Catholic exploded for 28 points in the second quarter, 12 of them from Rush. Steve Repichowski added 12 for the Cougars, who went on a 14-0 run in the span of 2:13 to take a 38-17 lead with two minutes left in the half. Lansing Catholic held a commanding 43-25 halftime advantage, and the Raiders never threatened again.
“Cooper’s a really versatile player,” Zwick said. “He has the ability to score down on the blocks and step out and make a jump shot. When he gets going, he’s a tough guy to defend.” Despite the disappointing ending, Pettit insists that the season was a successful one. “We competed with a lot of teams,” he said. “We’re still trying to build the program, and we’re still taking baby steps.”

an outstanding job on defense and they hit big shots when they need to,” Williamston coach Pete Cool said. “Anytime you play Portland, and their defense is top notch, so you have to keep attacking the whole time. I thought we did a nice job at attacking and a nice job of keeping our composure at the end.” Previously, junior Sarah Trierweller scored 13 points to lead Portland to a 39-31 win over DeWitt for their fifth straight district title on March 4. The game was a classic defensive struggle, with both teams applying fullcourt pressure throughout the game, stepping up to challenge every shot. “They are a great defensive team, and I consider us to be a great defensive team, that’s what we build our foundation on,” Kimball said. “Even when we struggled at the free throw line -- when we struggle from the field to put the ball in the bucket -- our defense was pretty darn consistent. That’s
the difference in these close games.” Portland, holding a one-point lead at halftime, opened the third quarter with a 9-2 run that was capped off by Kelsey Spitzley stealing a pass and flipping the ball to Taylor Roe for an uncontested layup. Roe, who handles the back court for the Raiders, was constantly pressured by DeWitt’s trapping defense. “We wanted it really badly, and we got past it,” Roe said. “They had about three girls on me all night.” DeWitt cut the Raider lead to five points late the fourth quarter on a field goal by Hanna Acre. Acre led the Panthers with 12 points and seven rebounds. Trierweller hit three of four free throws in the final minute to keep the Panthers at bay. “It was a struggle, but we pulled it out,” Trierweller said. “We needed those free throws at the end to pull out the win. This game was so important, we’ve won four districts, this was our fifth.”

Pirate girls advance By SCOTT YOSHONIS syoshonis@lsj.com
HOLTON — Pewamo-Westphalia looks to make a serious run in the Class C girls basketball tournament. After breezing through their district, in which they defeated CMAC rivals Carson City-Crystal 50-24 in the championship game on March 4, the Pirates went on a 19-2 firsthalf run and never looked back, cruising to a 63-44 win over Kent City (22-3) in their Class C regional semifinal on March 8. Abbey Hengesbach scored 17 points and Rachel Schafer and Brooke Lewis added 10 each in the regional semi for the Pirates (23-1), who held the Eagles to just four field goals in what P-W coach Steve Eklund said was his team’s best half of the season. “In the first half, we played outstanding defense,” Eklund said. “I don’t know if I can ask for a better effort, a lot of it was sheer hustle. That first sixteen minutes is the best we’ve played.” Hengesbach said that preparation was the key. “We scouted them,” she said. “The coaches scouted them really well and we watched film on them shooting threes. We knew we had to come out and stop the drive as well.” P-W led 13-8 at the end of the first quarter, but blew the contest open in the second, taking a 35-14 lead into the locker room.
Sonnie Kurnant led all scorers with 18 points and Kara Carlson chipped in 16 for Kent City, who didn’t score on consecutive trips until the fourth quarter, by which time the result was well beyond their reach. Rachel Schafer hit two three-pointers for the Pirates, one each in the second and third quarters. “I’ve been practicing them,” Schafer said. “I know when someone has an off day that I have to step up and hit some shots and try to get some scoring opportunities.” Eagles coach Scott Carlson said that P-W was “right up there” among the best teams he’s seen this year. “We didn’t play well, but hats off to them, they had a lot to do with that,” Carlson said. With the win, the Pirates advance to a regional final matchup against undefeated Clare on March 10, after the Pioneers defeated Muskegon Western Michigan Christian 45-38 in the other semifinal. That game was played after this paper went to press. “Every time you play a big game and win, you play a bigger one,” Eklund said. “This is a big win, and we have a bigger one to play next.” The winner of that regional final will play the winner of the Bath regional, likely archnemesis and top-ranked Flint Hamady, in a Class C quarterfinal at Lowell on Tuesday, March 15.
