Portland officials discuss offers for energy needs

PORTLAND — Where the City of Portland receives its electricity in the future is an issue that will be brought before the City Council in the near future. Portland city manager Tom Dempsey discussed two possible transactions at the council’s July 5 meeting that would supply a portion of the city’s power needs in the future. Both transactions would take place in conjunction with the Michigan Public Power Agency (MPPA) of which Portland is a member. One project would a partial ownership through the MPPA of a natural gas combined cycled facility located in Fremont, Ohio. The plant is owned by American Municipal Power and would provide power to MPPA members. “What is great about this project is that it is 99 percent complete so there is almost no construction risk,” said Dempsey. “The plant uses natural gas, which is environmentally friendly, and is

located near major gas pipelines and near high voltage electrical lines.” Dempsey said that as part of the transaction Portland would receive about 600 kilowatts of power during the peak usage time, which generally is between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. each day. “The MPPA has performed an independent assessment of this project and have stated that the is the best deal that they have seen,” said Dempsey. “The MPPA has been looking into this technology for years and this project has been the best option that they have come across.” Dempsey also said that it would provide an alternate power source in natural gas. The two plants that Portland currently has an interest in through the MPPA are both coal plants. do, because the car’s driver, Gayla Harkness, pulled over to the side of the road, found Munson — the ex-wife of her boyfriend — crouched in the trunk. Harkness immediately summoned help. Clinton County Prosecutor Chuck Sherman said during a preliminary hearing Wednesday in 65A District Court that Munson’s ultimate goal is not known.

“What we can prove,” Sherman told Judge Richard Wells, “is it was something with malicious intent.” Munson, 35, of Pewamo was ordered to stand trial on several counts, including carjacking, car theft and armed robbery. No trial date was set. Her attorney, Ron Zawacki, argued that because Munson’s name was on the car’s

land Community Arts Council (PCAC) has announced its new “Lens of the Community” photography project. Portland residents and visitors are encouraged to submit photographs that depict Portland. The photographs will be displayed and sold at Riverfest, Aug. 19-21, and select photos will be published in a collectible book depicting the year in images. To facilitate the project, the PCAC is offering three walking workshops, where beginners to professionals can improve their photography skills. “The Lens of the Community project is designed to collect snapshots of our community,” said PCAC Director Rush Clement. “We want to continue this project every year, and create a series of books depicting Portland’s ‘history’ as it happens.” Everyone is encouraged to participate in this project, from beginners to professionals. To enter, submit two copies of each photograph, using the form on the PCAC website. All photos must be 5” x 7” or 4” x 6”, and may be in color or black and white. There is a $5 entry fee per photo, and a maximum of three photos per entrant. PCAC mem-

Bids begin at $50 and are in $5 increments. “A person can register once and then bid on any of the chairs downtown,” said Clement. We encourage people to keep checking (and raising) their bids.” The person with the highest bid on Oct. 15 wins that chair. The PCAC is also giving a People’s Choice award to one artist. “Throughout the summer, people can go into the sponsoring business and put money in a canister to vote for that chair,” Clement said. “At the end of the summer, we’ll tally the votes, and the chair that brought in the most money wins.” Clement noted that the PCAC will award half of the money raised through votes to the winning artist. The remainder of the money, and money raised through the silent auction, will help support the PCAC’s many programs, events, and activities throughout the year. Sponsors include Duff Chadwick and Associates, which is displaying a chair depicting Chief Okemos, painted by Derek Rainey; Cheeky Monkeys, displaying a chair painted by Jessica Marks; and Raffaeles’ Marketplace, displaying a chair painted by Potterville artists Kimberly, Casey, and Lilly Conklin. PORTLAND — The Portland Community Arts Council (PCAC) has announced the launch of its downtown summer art project, “Sit A Spell.” The project is a display of Adirondack chairs, painted by area artists, which will be on downtown Portland sidewalks for a summerlong silent auction. PCAC Director Rush Clement explained that the chair project was inspired by a number of similar projects throughout the country. “Chicago has cows, Mackinaw Island has turtles, and the Portland Community Arts Council is providing a place to ‘Sit A Spell,’” said Clement. viding clean power and is financially solid. “Both of these projects would diversify our power sources to include natural gas and nuclear sources along with coal,” said Dempsey. “If you think there will be a carbon tax or a cap and trade, then you would want to do this. If a carbon tax is enacted, demand for power from these sources would go up.” The 10-year contract would include a 3 percent increase every year. Portland would receive 0.3 megawatts of power. Dempsey added that members of the city’s Light and Power Board have met with MPPA representatives at length and recommend joining both projects. Dempsey added that a resolution to join the nuclear power project may not come for a few months.

Outside the courtroom, Zawacki said he expects to challenge the charges in Circuit Court. Harkness, who works in dining hall services at Michigan State University, testified that she was driving home the afternoon of March 7, when the trunk light came on. Harkness lives north of St. Johns. She said the trunk light went off, but came back on again shortly before she took the Price Road exit off U.S. 127. According to testimony: Harkness pulled over, and

According to testimony, Munson came up with a scheme to stage a robbery at her own house and blame Harkness. That friend, Audrey Gross, who took nursing classes at Lansing Community College with Munson, testified that she had driven Munson past Harkness’s home at Munson’s request. Clinton County sheriff’s Detective Sgt. Fritz Sandberg testified that one day after the incident Munson admitted being in the trunk. She did, Sandberg testified, after he claimed there was an MSU surveillance video of her climbing into the trunk. Such a video does not exist. Munson also told Sandberg that the stun gun may have fallen out of her bag onto the trunk floor.

What she then saw made her think, “I’m about to die,” she testified. On the trunk’s floor, she saw a stun gun, a set of keys to the car — and someone wearing combat boots, dark clothing and rubber surgical gloves. Harkness said she screamed and fought against the person in the trunk as that person tried to get through the seat. Eventually it shut, and Harkness ran. “All I could think was I needed to get out of there,” she testified. As Harkness told two people who’d stopped to help to call 911, Munson drove off in the car. Munson, Harkness testified, was wearing large mirrored sunglasses, and something dark covered her

LANSING — Three area students were among 28 Michigan high school students who found out what it takes to become Michigan State Police (MSP) troopers, as part of the first session of the 35th annual American Legion Student Trooper Program. The program began on June 26 at the MSP Training Academy in Lansing and concluded with a graduation ceremony on July 1. Local students who participated in the program included Kyle and Jasen Benjamin of Portland, and Joshua Volk of Eagle. The week-long program, funded by the American Legion, is conducted by the MSP, with assistance from deputies and local officers of Michigan police agencies. The program is designed for highly motivated young men and women who are seriously interested in careers in law enforcement. In order to attend, each student is responsible for securing his/her own sponsorship from one of the American Legion offices located throughout the state. The program, which is patterned after

a regular MSP trooper recruit school, promotes an educational experience for building teamwork while learning about law enforcement fundamentals. Between P.T. at 6 a.m. and lights-out at 10 p.m., the students learn about traffic and criminal law, defensive tactics, firearms and marksmanship fundamentals, first-aid, water safety, patrol tactics, crash investigations, law enforcement career opportunities, forensic science, conservation law, narcotics, and underwater recovery. “Each student had the opportunity to get a taste of what it takes to become Michigan State Police troopers,” said Capt. Kari Kusmierz, commander of the MSP Training Academy. “The Michigan American Legion Student Trooper Program promotes the importance of education and helps build teamwork while learning about law enforcement fundamentals. The students also learn the importance of leadership and respect in order to serve as positive role models to others in their community.”

PORTLAND — A Portland High School junior received a high honor in a prestigious writing competition. Jordyn Stirton received a Silver Key in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competition sponsored by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers. Stirton submitted an original science fiction piece titled “Marlot Grove.” She is the daughter of Brian and Mandy Stirton. There were approximately 185,000 submissions to the contest in 30 categories. BABY TALK – PART I So you just found out you’re pregnant. Congratulations! That is wonderful! What is even more amazing is that your baby already has a spine, most of the body organs, arms and legs beginning to form, and its own nervous system. And it’s only 5 weeks old! Miraculous! In order for your baby to develop normally, it has two basic needs: One is proper nutrition and the other is a normally operating nervous system. Let’s cover nutrition first. At the risk of insulting my readers, some people operate under the impression that as long as they are not hungry, they eat well. Not true! As a mom, you must be aware of the fact that everything you eat and drink affects your baby. Everything! Generally the baby will take from the mother whatever it needs in terms of nutrition and I have met many mothers in my practice who are literally undernourished as a result. As a mom, you must remember that you are eating for two. Simply “filling up” is not the answer. Your baby has very specific needs as it is growing and developing. Its rate of growth is seven times faster than its three-year-old brother. Much like feeding a baby elephant some may say! The baby will take as much as it can from mom so it is important that mother provides proper fuel for all that rapid growth. So the following are essential for normal development of your baby: 1. Iron. Mom requires at least 800 mg daily. This is crucial for the development of red blood cells in your baby and is contained in most dark leafy veggies. If you must, you can obtain a liquid iron supplement from a health food store. The nicest way of getting iron is from a tablespoon of dark molasses in a glass of milk three times a day. What a way to treat your baby! Taking Vitamin C will help in the absorption of Iron from your digestive tract. 2. Folic Acid. This is very important in the normal development of the nervous system and cannot be omitted. You are lucky though, Folic Acid is contained in most foods which contain iron so it’s a cinch to get. If you really want to get fancy, Oysters are loaded with Folic Acid. They are also a known aphrodisiac and that may be why you are reading this, but that is another topic! 3. Calcium. Our friend! Mom and baby need at least 1200 mg daily. Broccoli is the best source of calcium or you may try raw almonds if you are not into broccoli. Vitamin D helps in the absorption of Calcium from the digestive tract. This can be tricky because Vitamin D can also cause nausea and “morning sickness”. I found that the easiest way of getting Vitamin D is from a careful suntan; whether it be outside or in a reputable tanning salon. If you do decide to use the “electric beach”, be careful of heat. Babies do not like getting too hot! I would also like to caution moms on taking Vitamin B6 when pregnant. It tends to reduce the amount of breast milk available for feeding; not a good thing! Monday, July 4 12:55 p.m.- assist to the Portland Ambulance Department at a medical call on Lincoln Street. 10 p.m.- report of a vehicle in a ditch on Ionia Road Tuesday, July 5 12:25 p.m.- report of a domestic dispute in progress in the area of James Street and Grant Street. After speaking with both parties involved, one subject agreed to leave the scene. 1:45 p.m.- report of a stolen truck on Grand River Avenue. Officers determined that the person making the report had borrowed the truck and that the truck’s owner had retrieved the vehicle. 5:31 p.m.- officer on patrol observed a vehicle with an expired plate at Kent Street and Island Street. During a traffic stop, the driver was cited for an expired registration as well as no insurance on a vehicle. 6:05 p.m.- report of a loose dog on Grant Street. The officer followed the dog to its home and

issued a citation to the dog’s owner as the dog had been loose prior to this incident. 9:25 p.m.- report of intoxicated subjects along Grand River Avenue. The residence was searched and found to be secure. 6 p.m.- assist to the Portland Ambulance Department at a medical call on Lincoln Street. Thursday, July 7 9:14 a.m.- assist to the Portland Ambulance Department at a medical call on East Street. 10:10 a.m.- report of a larceny of solar path lights on Kearney Street. Friday, July 8 3:13 a.m.- officer on patrol told of a suspected intoxicated driver along Interstate 96. The officer located the suspected vehicle and conducted a traffic stop near mile marker 77. The officer spoke with the driver, who was not intoxicated, but reported to be tired. Saturday, July 9

12:23 a.m.- officer on patrol observed a vehicle traveling at 42 mph in a 30 mph zone. The officer followed the vehicle and observed the vehicle turn from Divine Highway onto Grand River Avenue without using a turn signal. The vehicle also drifted over the center line before the officer conducted a traffic stop. During a traffic stop, the driver was found to be intoxicated and was also found to be in possession of codeine without a prescription. The officer also discovered a butterfly knife during a search of the vehicle. The subject was arrested and was formally charged with operating while intoxicated, possession of a narcotic, carrying a concealed weapon and no vehicle insurance. The vehicle was impounded. 7:37 a.m.- report of a subject passed out in a hallway on Kent Street. The subject was determined to be intoxicated and was cited for disorderly conduct. 10:03 p.m.- officer on patrol observed a vehicle with a nonfunctioning headlight. During a traffic stop at Grand River Avenue and Bridge Street, the

officer discovered a subject lying in the bed of the truck. The driver could not produce any identification, but was later determined to be wanted on a warrant out of Ingham County. A second subject in the vehicle was found to be wanted on a warrant out of Lansing. However, the Lansing Police Department chose not to meet officers to pick up the subject.

10:55 p.m.- report of a purse that was taken from a vehicle parked on Grand River Avenue. The subjects said that they had been at a business at that location earlier in the day and it was the last place they knew the purse was in the vehicle. They stated that they purse was left in the vehicle and the vehicle was not locked. A digital camera and some cash was also missing.

Sunday, July 10 10:50 p.m.- report of two subjects in an indecent act in a vehicle parked near the intersection of Kent Street and Grand River Avenue. The officer arrived and found the subjects, a man and a woman, still inside the vehicle as well as being intoxicated, Both subjects were cited for disorderly conduct and transported to a local hotel.

PORTLAND — Through a series of qualifiers Taylor Trierweiler earned the opportunity to compete in the team championship of the Aquafina Pitch, Hit and Run competition at Comerica Park in Detroit on June 25. With the accompanied support of her parents, Chris and Jamie, as well as her grandfather, Pat, she won second place in her division. The competition brought together the top Pitch, Hit, and Run performers from around the state. Three boys and three girls in each of the four age divisions competed by testing their pitching accuracy by throwing at a designated strike zone, hitting balls off a stationary tee for distance and accuracy and having a timed run from second

Dan Lucas, 22, finished ahead of 65 competitors to win the 5-mile race, with a time of 27:53.12. Becca Rudey, 25, won the women’s 5-mile in 30:27.56. The Male Masters winner was 52-year-old Jim Thompson, who finished third overall with a time of 29:39.85, and the female Masters winner was Julie Berger, 41, who finished sixth among women with a time of 37:14.38. Patrick Duff took home the title of male Grand Masters Champion, with a time of 35:22.54, and Kim Bane was the female Grand Masters champ, in 33:45.04.
