New library director settling in Tom Thelen tthelen@lsj.com

PORTLAND — Cory Grimminck is completing her first month as the director of the Portland District Library, but she already feels that she made the right decision to accept the job. “This is just a gorgeous facility with great views and being right on the river,” said Grimminck. “Plus the staff has been great and the people coming to the library have been very welcoming.” Grimminck became the library’s full-time director on July 1 replacing Jan Mosser, who retired on June 30 after 40 years of service to the

library, the last 30 as its director. Grimminck is the seventh director in the 107-year history of the Portland District Library. A native of Grand Haven, Grimminck majored in English while in college and worked in a library after college before taking her career in another direction. “I worked at the library in Spring Lake after college and really enjoyed it,” said Grimminck. “But then I decided to go to New York to take a job in publishing with Harper Collins. I had worked there for a while when I realized that everything that I enjoyed about that job I could get by working at a library. I just enjoy being around people who love books.”

Grimminck also spent six months in Africa as part of a project that established libraries in rural areas. After returning to the United States, she took a job as a youth specialist for the Wyoming location of the Kent District Library system in west Michigan. Grimminck also held the position as the lead librarian in charge of teen services at the library in Kalamazoo before becoming the director of the Hillsdale Community Library. “I enjoyed being the director at Hillsdale, but coming to Portland was a good opportunity for me,” said Grimminck. “I have a lot of friends See DIRECTOR, Page 3

Board tables court security proposal Tom Thelen tthelen@lsj.com

IONIA — A proposal to establish just one public entry into the Ionia County Courthouse was put on hold by the Ionia County Board of Commissioners last week. Board members chose to table the proposal during their July 26 meeting. The decision to table the proposal was partially due to the absence of three of the board’s seven members. “There was also a debate

over whether the entry should be on the first floor instead of in the basement level,” said Stephanie Hurlbut, interim county administrator. “Plus some of the board members wanted time to review the bid amounts.” Under the proposal, only one entry would be open for the public to enter the county courthouse. That entry would be on the east side of the building and lead to the basement level. All other doors would be locked.

A second door would be placed next to the existing door along the east side. The new door would be for entrances and the existing door would be exit-only. The entrance would be manned by an officer during courthouse hours and each person entering the courthouse would have to pass through a metal detector. The plan also includes alarms and security cameras at all outside entry doors. The cost of the proposal is not to exceed $45,000.

The proposal could be taken up by the board during its next meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 9.

Jail security Board members did approve a proposal to upgrade cameras at the Ionia County Jail. The upgrade is expected to cost $12,815.75. The work will be performed by ASC of Livonia and will include upgrading Cory Grimminck has completed her first month as the the current system to allow director of the Portland District Library. Grimminck had recently served as the director of the Hillsdale Community See COUNTY, Page 8 Library. TOM THELEN

Suspected Westphalia vandals apprehended Tom Thelen tthelen@lsj.com

WESTPHALIA — Detectives from the Clinton County Sheriff’s office have identified four individuals responsible for the multiple incidents of vandalism and destruction of property in the village of Westphalia on July 17.

In a press release, the sheriff’s office describes the suspects as local residents and include a 15-year-old subject, two 17-year-old subjects, and one 19-year-old subject. The release stated that the investigation is continuing and that detectives are waiting for final damage amounts from all of the victims before submitting the cases to the Clinton

County Prosecutor’s office. According to the sheriff’s office witnesses began calling police at about 1:30 a.m. on July 17, saying they saw three unknown suspects. Village light poles were knocked over with the lamps smashed, numerous vehicles had their tires punctured and an above-ground swimming pool’s liner was torn.

What we need to do is think of ways in which we can use technology to draw people to the library. “One thing that I have noticed since coming to Portland is the number of young families in the area,” added Grimminck. “I think we will look at the programs that we offer for young children and see what we can offer to them.”

connect expressway I-75 in Michigan directly to the bridge and then to Queen’s Highway 401 in Canada. Presently, the Ambassador Bridge does not connect to an expressway on the Canadian side, but unloads into an urban neighborhood and requires trucks to go through more than a dozen traffic lights before reaching Queen’s Highway 401. Proponents of a new bridge intend to displace homes and businesses located in the Delray neighborhood of Detroit. The total estimate for the cost of building the new bridge is roughly $2 bil-

play out financially and operationally. Lastly, I need to know if this is a bridge to Canada, or a bridge for Canada. Will we just be buying more imports from them, or will they purchase more exports from us? The three main funding questions boil down to this: how much will it cost to build, how much will it cost in day-to-day operations, and how much of a loss will be sustained from people no longer crossing the Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron, which is cur-

rently a major source of revenue for the Michigan Department of Transportation. During the coming weeks, I will be examining each of these matters very carefully. I’d like to hear your opinion on the proposed New International Trade Crossing and how you think it will affect us here in mid-Michigan. lion, which will be partially funded by the Canadian government and partially funded by private investors. The public-private partnership will then split toll revenue after the bridge is constructed. It could take a decade to build a new bridge to Canada. If a new bridge creates lots of new jobs for Michigan, I think that’s great news. But I don’t want Michigan taxpayers left footing the bill. The only way I will consider voting for the New International Trade Crossing is if I’m absolutely certain Michigan will not lose money. As your representative on this issue, I need to review numbers and hear from financial experts on how the new bridge will

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Efforts of Portland Garden Club appreciated Making Portland a beautiful place to live, shop and play is a cooperative and collaborative effort. On behalf of the Main Street Design Committee, and downtown businesses and visitors, I would like to thank with a whole heart the Portland Garden Club for their effort and creativity in designing, planting and maintaining ground planters at several locations throughout downtown Portland. Scout Park, Kent and Bridge Street, and Maple and Bridge Street plantings in particular are especially beautiful all season long. Your hard work and dedication are very much appreciated. Kathy Parsons, Chairperson Main Street Design Committee

What’s happening to the garage sale signs?

Relay for Life Portland

Silent Auction

Township and I enjoy going to garage/ yard sales as do a lot of us. For the past few weeks I have noticed the lady in the red (city owned) pickup going around picking up signs. A couple of weeks ago on Bridge Street by the cemetery she grabbed one probably getting overtime or at least getting paid, wasting gas. Then this past Friday on Grand River by the ball park there she was again, with the pickup burning gas, and snatched another one. However, the next day in the exact same spot the farmers market had a sign that was there all day. Discrimination? Perhaps she has a vendor spot there. I certainly don’t see any problem with allowing signs as long as there taken down after the sale and if they don’t the address is on the sign, not a problem on finding the culprits. Than you could punish them. I don’t think you can find a town within 50 miles of Portland that yanks signs, so why are we so special?

Change expected to save district $60,000 during fiscal year Tom Thelen tthelen@lsj.com

WESTPHALIA — School districts around the state are anticipating a tough 2011-2012 fiscal year and the Pewamo-Westphalia School District is no exception. The district’s Board of Education approved the district’s 2011-2012 budget on June 20. Overall, board members anticipating having to spend $102,742 from the district’s fund equity in order to balance the budget. The district ended the 2010-2011 school year on a positive note as it spent less from its fund equity to balance the budget than it had anticipated. The district had planned to spend $87,866 of its fund equity as of February, but only spent $34,320, leaving a fund equity balance of $757,126.

“The administration and staff did a great job of working together over the last few months of the fiscal year to come up with some adjustments and whittle that deficit down,” said Jason Mellema, P-W superintendent. That fund equity amount represents approximately 13 percent of the district’s budgeted expenditures for 2011-2012. The fund equity is expected to drop to $694,384 at the conclusion of the 2011-2012 school year. One of the main reductions for 2011-2012 comes in a shift in kindergarten. Mellema The district will move to an all-day, alternate day kindergarten class schedule for 2011-2012, rather than the half-day schedule previously used. Mellema said the change was made to prepare for a possible mandate from the Michigan Department of Education. “We had been hearing from various

Deputies arrest thief after high-speed chase Pursuit crosses into parts of four counties IONIA — Police officers from Ionia County helped capture a subject who was driving a stolen car. Officers arrested the suspect, an 18-year-old resident of Jackson, after a chase that reached speeds exceeding 100 mph and ended near Woodbury. No one was injured in the pursuit and the only damage reported was to the stolen vehicle. According to report from the Ionia County Sheriff’s office, Ionia County Central Dispatch operators received a call from OnStar at 11:50 a.m. on July 24 reporting that a vehicle stolen in Jackson County was traveling westbound on Interstate 96 near Portland. Dispatchers provided

a description of the vehicle, a 2010 silver Chevrolet Malibu, to law enforcement officers within the county. Deputies from the Ionia County Sheriff Office and Michigan State Police went on to Interstate 96 so that the stolen vehicle was between the state troopers and the county deputies. sources that the MDE is considering moving to allday, every-day kindergarten, possibly as early as next year,” said Mellema. “We are not for certain that it is going to happen, but that is what the MDE wants to do. Assuming that is what the state wants to do, we wanted to find some way to transition from the half-day kindergarten and this was the way we came up with.” Changing to the all-day schedule will also eliminate a mid-day bus run and is estimated to save the district $60,000. The district also plans to reduce capital expenditures, such as buses and equipment purchases, to save an additional $127,000. One area that is still being worked on is the contract with the teachers. Mel-

The new logo features a graphic of a bright sun with sunglasses, with blue waves underneath. “The Riverfest Marketing Committee had the choice of six new logos, and this one had overwhelming support,” said Portland Main Street Manager Patrick Reagan. “We believe that this logo highlights all of the aspects of the community in August - sunshine, the rivers, and fun.” Riverfest Marketing Committee Chairperson Lynne Paradiso added: “I am very excited about the selection of the logo for the upcoming 2011 Riverfest event. I believe it will be a great addition and would like to thank Julie Clement for her time in creating all of the possibilities.” The new logo will be featured on the event website, posters, T-shirts, and other marketing tools for the event. “It’s a fresh, new logo for a fresh, new Riverfest,” said Riverfest chairperson Julie Clement. “Everyone’s excited about working together to revitalize this wonderful Portland tradition.” Riverfest was originally started and run by the Portland Area Chamber of Commerce. This year, many organizations are

taking part in planning and hosting the event. “We have many different organizations planning this event for 2011,” Reagan said. “Main Street, the Downtown Development Authority, the Chamber of Commerce, the Kruger Memorial group, the arts council, the City of Portland, the Historical Society, the Equestrian Club, and many other great organizations have taken active roles this year. We believe that this will make this year’s event one to remember. “This is a fun summer event, one that our community is known for,” said Reagan. “It has a great past, but has struggled a little bit in the last few years. The Riverfest Committee chose this new logo, not only for its great appeal, but also to symbolize that this event is being reborn as a truly ‘community wide’ celebration.” For more information on the 2011 Riverfest, please visit www.portlandmichigan riverfest.org.

PORTLAND — The Portland Community Arts Council (PCAC) has announced the launch of its downtown summer art project, “Sit A Spell.” The project is a display of Adirondack chairs, painted by area artists, which will be on downtown Portland sidewalks for a summer-long silent auction. Currently, the PCAC has six chairs completed, with more in the hands of other artists.

From now until Oktoberfest, the chairs will be displayed outside local businesses. Those who would like to bid on a chair can simply go into the business, register as a bidder, and place a bid. Bids begin at $50 and are in $5 increments. “A person can register once and then bid on any of the chairs downtown,” said PCAC director Rush Clement. We encourage people to keep checking (and raising) their bids.”

The person with the highest bid on Oct. 15 wins that chair. The PCAC is also giving a People’s Choice award to one artist. “Throughout the summer, people can go into the sponsoring business and put money in a canister to vote for that chair,” Clement said. “At the end of the summer, we’ll tally the votes, and the chair that brought in

BABY TALK – PART II I would like to address some of the taboos and misunderstandings often associated with moms being pregnant. One of the biggest is this whole issue of weight gain. Moms all over the world secretly look in the mirror and cringe at the sight of the loss of their waist, their “fat” stomach, enlarged breasts, swollen feet, and the fact that they often carry drips of their lunch on their tee-shirt. Let me be emphatic here: You are not FAT, you are PREGNANT!! Huge difference! Swelling is actually a sign of a healthy pregnancy, not something that should be treated. Retention of fluids is healthy for mom and baby. It is also temporary. Just part of being pregnant! A generation ago, weight gain was limited to 8-10 lbs. It was soon discovered that moms and babies were undernourished so the magic number became 24. This is no longer the case. Latest research indicates that weight gain of 35 lbs or more on a high protein diet is healthy as long as it is well balanced, does not contain chemicals or preservatives and is limited in refined sugars. The other issue revolves around salt. Moms are often told to restrict their salt intake. You should realize that Sodium (a part of salt) is very important in the production of extra blood volume. Very important for a growing baby and a lack can be disastrous. I recommend that you use salt “to taste” and no more. This is an easy way to listen to what your body is telling you. There are other no-no’s that you should be aware of when you’re pregnant. One is Alcohol. It causes problems with the development of your baby’s nervous system. Caffeine is another. It has been linked to birth defects. This can be found in coffee, cola, black and green teas and chocolate (Boo). As well, try to limit your preservative intake including aspartame (refer to my earlier issue of Kids-First); your baby will thank you later. Be very cautious using any type of drugs or medications. All have adverse effects on your baby. I should be emphatic here - all drugs cross the placental barrier and affect your baby. There is no such thing as a “safe drug.” One of the most common nuisances of pregnancy is the “morning sickness” thing. Most of this is caused by a lack of blood sugar - hypoglycaemia. After-all, you have not eaten since 7-8:00 pm the night before and your developing baby is literally feeding all night while you are asleep. Your blood sugar level is dangerously low and you feel sick. I ask my patients to have an energy bar or a snack high in protein, fructose and complex carbs late in the evening, which will level out their blood sugar until breakfast. There are a number of things you can do to make your pregnancy the enjoyable experience it was meant to be. The first is having a chiropractic check-up to make sure your nervous system is functioning normally so that you have a good pregnancy and much easier labor and delivery. This has little to do with back pain but is crucial for optimal health. I feel this is a must in having a healthy pregnancy. The use of herbs such as red raspberry leaves makes for a good uterine tonic and helps prevent miscarriage, anaemia and aids in fighting infection. Peppermint tea will help with digestion and nausea. So will ginger root. Other herbs such as Echinacea and camomile are very relaxing and should be taken as a hot tea. All these are available from your health food store.

ST. JOHNS — Most people know that Habitat for Humanity builds decent, affordable and safe homes for low-income families who are hard-working, but who would not be able to afford a conventional mortgage. In an attempt to reach out to serve more families in Clinton County throughout the year, Habitat has begun a wheelchair ramp program. The program is designed to serve low-income families, physically impaired persons or elderly persons who own their homes. Habitat will provide the ramp design and the labor, and

the family served will only have to pay for the material. Knowing that the need may far outweigh the ability to pay, short term loans will be available through Habitat for families who may need it. The program also helps to serve those who want to do volunteer construction work not only during the busy summer season, but year round. The Capital Region Community Foundation recently awarded $7,590 to help Habitat launch the program. “We are pleased to support the efforts of Habitat for Humanity in Clinton County, a region that has been underserved in the past, and we look forward to their development with great promise,” said Brad Patterson, Vice President of Programs for the foundation.

Portland photo contest underway PORTLAND — The Portland Community Arts Council (PCAC) has announced its new “Lens of the Community” photography project. Portland residents and visitors are encouraged to submit photographs that depict Portland. The photographs will be displayed and sold at Riverfest, Aug. 19-21, and select photos will be published in a collectible book depicting the year in images. To facilitate the project, the PCAC is offering walking workshops, where beginners to professionals can improve their photography skills. “The Lens of the Community project is designed to collect snapshots of our community,” said PCAC Director Rush Clement. “We want to continue this project every year, and create a series of books depicting Portland’s ‘history’ as it happens.” Everyone is encouraged to participate in this project, from beginners to professionals. To enter, submit two copies of each photograph, using the form on the PCAC website. All photos must be 5” x 7” or 4” x 6”, and may be in color or black and white. There is a $5 entry fee per photo, and a maximum of three photos per entrant. PCAC members or people who attend one of the walking workshops may submit up to five photographs. The

cost of the walking workshops is $10, or $8 for PCAC members. The workshops will be led by local photographers. Once submitted, the PCAC will mat one copy of each photograph for the Riverfest display. Photographs will be sold for $10 each, with $5 returned to the photographer if his or her photo is sold. Visitors to the show will choose a “People’s Choice” winner. A number of photos will be selected for a special edition book - “Portland 2011” - to be sold later this year. “We plan to document each year through photos,” Clement explained, “and eventually, these books will become a history of Portland.” Clement encouraged anyone interested in Portland, its history, or photography to enter. For details and to enter your photos, contact Rush Clement at (517) 647-6545, or go to the PCAC website: www.portlandcommunityart.com. As photos are submitted, some will also be featured on the PCAC’s Facebook page, “Portland Community Arts Council (Michigan).” The PCAC’s mission is to connect the community by weaving the arts into everyday life. LANSING — Effective Aug. 15, the Lansing Social Security office will be open to the public Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. – a reduction of 30 minutes each weekday. While agency employees will continue to work their regular hours, this shorter public window will allow them to complete face-toface service with the visiting public without incurring the cost of overtime. Congress provided Social Security with nearly $1 billion less than the President

requested for the budget this fiscal year, which makes it impossible for the agency to provide the amount of overtime needed to handle service to the public as we have in the past. Most Social Security services do not require a visit to an office. For example, anyone wishing to apply for benefits, sign up for direct deposit, replace a Medicare card, obtain a proof of income letter or inform us of a change of address or telephone number may do so at www.socialsecurity.gov or by dialing our toll-free number, 1-800-772-1213. People who are deaf or hard of hearing may call our TTY number, 1-800-325-0778. — From the Social Security Administration

All this week, remind your children of the wonder and delight of reading.
