approved by a 6-1 margin, with trustee John Veenstra dissenting. “It’s excessive regulation,” Veenstra said,. He disliked a section of the proposed ordinance which governs tower design. That portion prohibits the use of supporting guy wires, which several board members said were unsightly. Veenstra countered: “We have poles supported by guy wires all over the township … Consumers Energy has one in my yard. It’s just a way of supporting poles at a lower cost than if you make them completely free-standing without

which need removing, clerk Mary Helmbrecht would like for residents to first try it out. “If we have put things in here to discourage people, I would hope that those would be brought to our attention as people would like to have some use of wind energy,” she said. “I think the flaws in this will become abundantly clear, and I would hope we’re all up for amending it.” An additional amendment permitting the use of guy wires, with anchors allowed on some portion of the land where the tower would stand, also failed by a 4-3 vote.

Medical marijuana law takes effect next month dlparker@lsj.com
EAST LANSING – The city’s medical marijuana ordinance will not take effect until May 15 because of a lack of any demand by proposed dispensary operations to get a license. The moratorium governing the issuance of licenses for primary caregiver operations and dispensaries is set to expire Sunday, May 15. At their April 12 work session, council members discussed lifting the moratorium at their May 3 meeting. They agreed instead to take the additional time to ensure residents are educated about the ordinance. Council member Kevin Beard confirmed with city
clerk Nicole Evans that no applications have yet been made. “There is no pent-up demand, and no one will be disadvantaged if we let the moratorium run its course and prepare (other documents),” Beard noted. City staff has been asked to prepare a frequently asked questions document that would cover how the license would be administered and how it would be enforced. For example, residents witnessing a violation will be asked to contact police, and officers will then determine whether a violation is criminal or civil in nature. “There is no simple way to administer this ordinance. I suggest all complaints begin at the police department,” city manager Ted Staton told the council.
A primary caregiver applying for a special use permit and a license would be subject to an inspection of the premises, which has been estimated to take one hour for an initial application and two hours for a renewal. Evans told council members city staff determined the licensing fee for an initial application should be $275, with renewals at $525. The fees were arrived at by calculating the labor cost involved, Evans said. Inspections will require two police officers and one fire inspector. No medical marijuana can be on the premises for the initial inspection, while part of a renewal inspection will be determining whether the applicant has the appropriate number of plants.

Church interested in using former Wardcliff school By Dawn Parker dlparker@lsj.com
OKEMOS – A shuttered Okemos elementary school may have a chance at a second life. Okemos Superintendent Dr. Catherine Ash confirmed that two programs could be moving to the former Wardcliff Elementary, which closed in June 2010. “We really do want to find ways to utilize Wardcliff Elementary School that make sense so it remains a strong part of that neighborhood and of our school community,” Ash said. One possible tenant is an adult English as a Second Language program, which Ash said operates through an East Lansing church. The program is run on federal grants administered by the Okemos school
district, and the lease at its current location expires June 30. The ESL program would use approximately four classrooms on four mornings per week during the school year, Ash said. The program would have its own office space and a dedicated phone line, she added. The other program to approach the district is an area church, whose name Ash requested be kept private until the arrangement for use of the building is finalized. The church, an existing area congregation, does not now have its own building. “They liked what this location has to offer,” Ash told board members at their April 11 meeting. The church would only use Wardcliff on Sundays, Ash said. Custodial services would be provided for two hours at the end of the day
for cleanup, according to district operations director Steve Lathrop. The remaining portions of the building would be open for other activities. The church would like to begin services in the building as early as next month, Ash said – which would mean some revenue to the district for the current school year – while the ESL program would not open until the fall. The positive annual revenue impact to the district has been calculated at around $23,000, which Ash said includes paying utilities, custodians and other operating expenses. Lathrop told board members the church would pay $400 per week in rent, or $20,800 annually. The ESL program brings $27,000 in revenue. Another $7,500 in potential revenue could come from utilities not

MERIDIAN TWP. – A 5 -foot by 7-foot flag does not meet either the U.S. Flag Code or federal recommendations. But that’s the standard Meridian Township has, and the maximum size it will keep for the time being – although a 5 x 8 flag is not out of the question. The issue recently came
up before the township’s Zoning Board of Appeals, which rejected 5-0 a request from Belle Tire to display an 8 x 12 flag. The Allen Park-based company had originally sought a 20 x 30 flag but later amended its request, blaming an “internal miscommunication”. Board members took up the issue during a discussion period at their April 18 meeting, ultimately deciding a 5 x 8
flag would be acceptable. “I prefer that we would allow a larger flag than that,” trustee John Veenstra said, “but I certainly would support that size.” The township ordinance, part of the sign code, has been in place
since the early 1990s and was last updated in 2001, according to community planning and development director Mark Kieselbach. The ordinance mandates one flagpole per site standing between 16 and
35 feet high. A maximum of two flags can fly, with the American flag no more than 35 square feet and a second flag no more than 24 square feet. To meet federal recommendations and to find a readily available flag,

Anyone finding themselves in a similar situation should first ensure their own safety before calling police, Howell said. The more information officers have – a description of the suspect and their car, especially a license plate number – is key to getting an arrest. “Make yourself safe first – that is your first priority,” Howell said. Local police say they are seeking information from anyone who may have experienced a similar incident. Police ask that people
MERIDIAN TWP. – A Williamston man was charged last Monday with three counts of aggravated indecent exposure in connection with a series of incidents near the CATA bus line. Nicholas Adam Dagner, 30, was arraigned in 55th District Court in Mason. His bond remains at $50,000. On April 14, Meridian Township Police responded to the area of Grand River Avenue and Northwind Drive in reference to a person who had been seen on more than one occasion expos-
ing himself to women waiting to board CATA buses. The caller was able to provide a Dagner description of the suspect and the vehicle he was seen entering. An investigator responding to the call located the suspect’s vehicle, and was able to make contact with the driver when he pulled into the parking lot of an apartment complex, according to police reports During the last two
months, the Meridian Township Police Department has received two reports of a man exposing himself to females at two bus stops along the Grand River Avenue corridor. In a separate incident, the victim was followed to her apartment by the suspect. When she exited her vehicle, the suspect exposed himself to her. On April 15, the Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office issued a three-count warrant for aggravated indecent exposure, police officials said Meridian Police Sgt. Lana Howell said Dagner is lodged in the Ingham

Mother’s Day
Stark choices confront Okemos By Max Ieuter
For The Towne Courier
Okemos schools will lose $1.9 million – and possibly transportation and athletic programs – if the governor’s proposed budget for the 2012-2013 fiscal years passes. According to the House Fiscal Agency’s summary of K-12 public school funding, Okemos received approximately $33.1 million in the 2011 fiscal year. That will drop about 6 percent to approximately $31.2 million in the 2012 fiscal year if Gov. Rick Snyder’s proposed budget passes. Director of Accounting Services Robert Clark said the worst-case scenario for Okemos Public Schools would be a shortfall of $5.4 million. If the board were to choose to not have a fund
balance, he added, the deficit would decrease to $3.6 million. That $1.8 million in the fund balance represents 4 percent of operating expenses. The school board will covene Monday, April 25 to continue its deliberatons on how to deal with the looming financial crisis. Okemos Public Schools officials say they are prepared to make the sacrifices needed. School board president Amy Crites said Superintendent Catherine Ash will consult with department directors and principals to discuss which cuts will be necessary to allow schools to operate efficiently. Respondents in a Jan. 18 Community Forum Individual Priorities Summary noted that Okemos Public Schools can reduce the
costs of transportation. One option is eliminating all transportation provided by the school district. Crites said transportation is not a mandated service, but if it is provided it must be done equally.
Major impacts Cutting athletic transportation is also being considered, as is complete elimination of all extracurricular activities and athletics. “They happen to be the only things left to cut. After 10 years of budget reductions due to a decrease in funding, we are left with fewer and fewer options … It’s ugly and awful,” Crites said. “These kids rely on bus transportation,” noted Okemos Parent Council member Angela Wilson. It’s no longer easy for
Okemos children to walk to school, Wilson continued, due to the June 2010 closure of Wardcliff and Central elementaries. There are three traditional elementary schools left in the district, plus the Montessori program now housed at the former Central building. Wilson said parents should be aware of what is happening to the schools and should be involved in protecting their children’s education. Following former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm’s proposed budget cut of $170 per pupil in Michigan’s K-12 public schools, Snyder has proposed an additional $300 per pupil be reduced in K-12 public school funding. If the proposal passes, See CHOICES, Page 11

the budget cut would occur on Oct. 1, the beginning of the 2012 fiscal year. The Community Forum summary also considers personnel and wage cuts if the governor’s proposal is passed.
Combining schools Some options include combining the Okemos High School principal job with the athletic director job, sharing one ele-
mentary principal between two buildings, and reducing or eliminating secretaries, counselors, reading consultants and technology coordinators. Another unpopular option being reviewed is privatizing custodians. Crites said they are being asked to cut everything but what is required of the school, and it will be hard to maintain the level of education that the community expects. The governor’s office, how-

Haslett’s American Legion gives $2,700 to food pantry
HASLETT — The Haslett Food Pantry has $2,700 more to help feed hungry families in our community, thanks to the efforts of the Sons of the American Legion at the Stephen W. Frank American Legion Post in Haslett. The group held its second annual community bowling day at Marvel Lanes Feb. 26. The event included 116 bowlers and 22 sponsoring organizations from around Haslett, East Lansing and Okemos. Last year, the event raised $2,200 for the food bank. “We had more than 100 people get together for a fun afternoon of bowling on a snowy February afternoon. We had great participation from the community, from local businesses, and it went to a great cause,” said Dick Datema, the organizer of the event and First Vice Commander of the American Legion group in Haslett. During 2010, the Haslett Food Pantry provided assistance to almost 200 families, most just once or twice but some more frequently. The pantry and always welcomes dona-

East Lansing: A unique, walkable town and walkable for our family and the community without a commute and within our city limits. We experienced this type of living in the beautiful, historic town of Cohasset, just south of Boston. It’s an old lobstering community with a village green and everything walking distance. Other than 202-year-old houses and an ocean, East Lansing offers a similar experience, bolstered instead by a thriving Division I university. Land here is limited, and therefore its use is to be carefully considered. I realize that my need for such a reachable and connectable community stems also from Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., where I was raised. I walked to the movie theater, a local lunch spot, or the pharmacy to buy a Mother’s Day card as early as my babysitting money would afford it. I also wanted to pay taxes to a city at a city hall where faces will learn to be familiar. I wanted a place where a kind woman from the water department asks about details of water usage to protect my “running” bill with a six-person household.

Thank heavens for East Lansing. East Lansing is a place where neighborhood schools may be threatened by the push for consolidation by way of expense cutting. Yet kids still walk together in groups to and from school, and — fortunately in East Lansing — along smaller, local roads.

ver since the Lansing State Journal recently featured four or so families to discuss and celebrate area suburbs, I have felt the “other side” of living hasn’t been heard. East Lansing deserves unique credit. My husband, Steve, and I made a concerted choice last year to fully invest in our community. We moved from Meridian Township into the City of GUEST East Lansing. COLUMN We chose to end corporate investment and embrace a community and Vicki Belloli its public schools, and open a local business. We chose it not only so our family can walk to school and preschool, but also to the library, the park, restaurants, the drugstore, a beautiful university, and until recently the grocery store. We also made a choice to form our new company, Upstream Investment Partners, instantly reachable

HASLETT w Last season: 18-18, Third in CAAC Gold w Coach: Jeff Woodworth, 13th season w Top Returnees: Joe Varlesi (Jr.- 2B), Jack Schaubroeck (Sr.- SS), Mike Gorman (Sr.- C), Zach Porritt (Sr.- P/OF), Ray McNamara (Sr.- 1B), Adam Foren (Jr.- 3B), Jake Wamhoff (Jr.- OF) w Other Contributors: Alb Palacio (Sr.- IF), Rob Whitaker (Sr.- OF), Preston Watson (Sr.- OF, IF) w Outlook: The Vikings return seven starters from last year’s club and should be one of the deepest teams in the area this spring. Porritt is one of the top pitchers in the CAAC Gold, and this team is always solid defensively. Expectations are high for Haslett this spring, and if things go according to plan, the Vikings should find themselves on top of the league standings at the end of the season.

Top player: Stevie McKee, Holt Outlook: Holt returns the bulk of last year’s regular-season runner-up and tournament champion, making them the team to beat in the league, with Okemos a strong second. Waverly/Lansing Catholic/Grand Ledge will likely be the most improved, and could challenge for a spot in the top three. HASLETT/WILLIAMSTON w Last season: 8-8, 4th place w Coach: Brandon Schwind, first season w Returning starters: Nate Massa (D) sr., Joe Crim (D) sr., Nick Mowid (A) jr., Wes Holton (M) jr., Jordy Rich (D) jr. w Outlook: Schwind will bring collegiate coaching experience to the team, which may open some eyes early.

Coaches predictions: 1. DeWitt, 2. Haslett, 3. Ionia, 4. Eaton Rapids, 5. Charlotte, 6. Fowlerville Top athletes: Tori DeSira, DeWitt; Molly Duda, Haslett Season outlook: More coaches picked DeWitt, but Haslett got firstplace votes.
Coaches predictions: 1. Okemos, 2. Haslett/Williamston/Lansing Christian, 3. Holt/East Lansing, 4. Grand Ledge, 5. Mason. Top athletes: Monique Pentecost, Okemos senior utility. Season outlook: Okemos returns a strong nucleus of players that should help it again lead the area. Expect a close battle for second between the remaining teams. Okemos is coming off one of the most impressive seasons in Michigan history, 35-0 with the school’s first state title after defeating Saline 7-4 in June’s final. All five area teams were moved into one district this season — District 3 — after previously being split up.

HASLETT/WILLIAMSTON/LANSING CHRISTIAN w Last season: 9-16 w Coach: Kelli Russell, fifth season. w Returning starters: Courtney Weyhing (jr.) utility, Ashley Henderson (jr.) hole defense. w Other contributors: Kara Lurvey (soph.) hole set, Jenny Jess (soph.) driver. w Outlook: Even with only two returning starters, HWLC is looking forward to a strong season. There is potential from younger returning players, and Russell expects big things. Weyhing should be one of the area’s best.

Pay cuts for Meridian elected officials will stand By Dawn Parker
dlparker@lsj.com
MERIDIAN TWP. — Despite some contentious conversation among board members, the recommendations of the Elected Officials Compensation Commission will stand without challenge. At the biennial meeting of the EOCC on April 5, the five-member commission reduced salaries for the supervisor ($20,000 from
$28,000), the clerk ($65,000 from $75,932) and trustees ($9,615 from $10,615). The clerk’s salary, reduced at her request to $60,745 in 2009, remains unchanged. Township board members last Monday could have chosen to overturn the recommendations, which take effect 30 days after they are issued but do not apply to the current board. While trustee Lynn Ochberg said she would like to see the commission be abol-
ished, alleging that members did not understand their duties, supervisor Susan McGillicuddy said the real issue is about whether the clerk and treasurer’s jobs should in the future be part-time.

any commission has had before,” she said. “Unlike anyone who is proposing the half-time … the commissioners actually came and asked how we spend our time, what do See CUTS, Page 23

OKEMOS — Okemos coach Greg Jenkins knew that he had a good team heading into this year’s girl’s water polo season. After posting a 4-0 record at last weekend’s Stevenson Invitational in Chicago, one of the top water polo tournaments in the Midwest, it has become evident that the No. 1-ranked Chieftains are once again a state championship favorite this spring. Okemos swept through four separate teams from the state of Illinois, all of which were ranked in the top-10 in the state. “I was very pleased with our team’s performance, not only because we won
our games, but more importantly the fashion in which we won them,” Jenkins said. “I’m pleased with the leadership and toughness the girls displayed in closing the games out.” While Lauren Dudley led the way during Okemos’ state title run last season, it is her younger sister, Katie, who has now taken over the scoring load for the Chieftains. Katie Dudley leads the team in scoring this year, including having the gamewinning goal in a 5-4 double-overtime victory over Fenwick, the No. 1-ranked team in the state of Illinois. That was one of two tournament games that were decided in overtime for the Chieftains. “That’s never easy, but
my girls were resilient and tenacious and refused to lose,” Jenkins said. “Having close overtime games at this point in the season will really benefit us down the stretch if we find ourselves in a close match-up, because we’ll have been there and we’ll know what to expect from ourselves.” The Chieftains have a good mix of younger and older players this season, and that group has performed exceptional in late game situations, something that Jenkins has taken notice of. “What I’m most excited about after the close wins in Chicago is the composure and poise the team demonstrated in some intense and stressful situations,” Jenkins said

Old Mission Born March 20, 1939, Battle Creek, Michigan - April 12, 2011 Old Mission, Michigan John received a Distinguished Professor Emeritus from Michigan State University’s Colleges of Medicine for service from 19701995. During that time he also received a Distinguished Faculty Award. In 1995 John and his wife,Sharon Olson, moved to Old Mission Peninsula. John’s clinical focus became one of developing holistic healing programs for people with chronic or life-threatening illness while also addressing grief and loss issues. He also saw a need to develop healing communities as a part of individual and collective ways to live fully. To that extent he worked with the Chamber of Commerce and local fire departments in bringing New York City firefighters from 9/11 to Traverse City for a program of renewal and healing while also participating in a local program of renewal and healing for returning Iraq veterans. John also collaborated for many years with Dr. Marilyn Schneider and Dr. Sam Copeland to assist with patient psychological support at the Center for Health in Traverse City. In 2008 he joined Sharon in her Partners in Prevention practice to comprehensively focus on wellness/prevention programs from a clinical coaching perspective. Before his untimely death due to complications from a fall, John had just completed the third edition of Finding My WayFrom Trauma to Transformation: The Journey through Loss and Grief. (Seasons Press, 2011) representing a culmination of his lifelong commitment to address grief holistically and validate each unique grief journey including his own. He will be greatly missed his wife and soul mate of twenty four years, his sister Elizabeth Kreider (Kent), his daughters Betsy Schneider (Frank Ekeberg), Anne Schneider (Shawn Mann Roland), Rachel, and his grandchildren Madeleine, Viktor, Kasper, and Ozzie, Sharon’s children John Olson (Tovah), Clarissa Kewin and grandchildren Taylor and Casey Wilamowski, Mckenna, Bronwyn, Rhiannan, and Finnegan Kewin. John was also grateful for many loving friends and colleagues who shared and supported his life journey. It is said that people remember not what we do but what we are about. John was about- continuing to learn new perspectives, being a caring friend, a kind and gentle man who journeyed with people through very difficult times while never giving up on them. He believed in growing friendships and communities of all shapes and sizes. He was adamant about giving blood regularly. Most profoundly he brought forth our best self when we could not see it in ourselves. He deeply loved his family knowing intimately that grief ’s journey is a powerful teacher of what is truly to be cherished in our lifetime. A celebration of John’s life will take place on Tuesday at Central United Methodist Church in Traverse City with participation the Unitarian ministry. A social gathering will be from 12-1 p.m. with the service of celebration from 1-2 p.m. Donations may be made to the Traverse Health Clinic (traversehealthclinic.org) in support of psychological support services and the Munson Hospice and Palliative Care Program (munsonhealthcare.org).

Pam was diagnosed with MS in 2001. Six years later, she was faced with a miserable life of depression, fatigue, pain and bladder issues. Fear of needing a feeding tube, being wheelchair bound if not eventually bedbound and she was on 10 prescription drugs and not one of them made the symptoms go away. In 2008, Pam was introduced to what is called cellular nutrition. It was then she discovered how very important diets affect our health. A startling statistic showed that about 85% of illnesses are diet related. Within 6 months of changing Pam’s dietary lifestyle, her symptoms began to fade away. She no longer spent the day in bed watching the world pass by her. The aches and pains subsided, the depression vanished. She was once again able to walk without falling down. She quit choking on her food. Life once again was worth living. – Pam Bullen FREE MS support groups that are not funded by any Originations
