he idea of running for 11 to 12 hours in a race up steep hills and over winding trails — for a distance equivalent to a double marathon — would be unthinkable for most people, But Joe and Linda Pulver, both well known in local runner circles, are unlike most people. Joe is the managing director of the Clinton County Road Commission, and Linda works for a financial services firm in East Lansing. The couple traveled to Reichweiler in central Germany in late May for the 53-mile (85-kilometer) Keufelskopf Ultra-Trail Marathon. Their memories of the huge physical challenge are vivid. Linda was the first female finisher, coming in 15th overall in 10 hours, 33 minutes. Joe placed 47th overall in 11 hours 44 minutes for the 85 kilometer course. The couple went to Germany at the invitation of their friend Michael Becker, whose home village was the setting for the race. “He told us, ‘Come home with me, see Germany and run this race’,” Joe Pulver recalled. In addition to Becker – now an East Lansing resident who finished fourth overall – the American contingent included East Lansing resident Abby Eaton, who tied Joe for 47th overall in 11 hours 44 minutes. Lansing resident Dillon McCormick was 58th in 12 hours and two minutes. They arrived four days before the race, and a tour of a portion of the race course was intimidating. old MSU medical student told investigators he became angry and killed more than a dozen small Italian Greyhound dogs because they defecated on his ﬂoor, urinated on his bed and would not Thompson come to him, according to court transcripts. Ingham County Animal Control Deputy Jodi LeBombard testiﬁed at a June 24 hearing in 55th District Court that led to charges being ﬁled against Thompson. He is charged with killing 13 dogs since September 2010. After killing one of the Italian greyhounds, Thompson “kind of freaked out,” LeBombard said. Typically, he’d put a deceased dog in a garbage bag, along with its clothes,

collars and other items, LeBombard testiﬁed. “He would cry all the way to the Dumpster, and throw it in the Dumpster,” she said. Thompson faces 10 felony counts of animal killing in 55th District Court in Mason and three additional counts of animal killing in East Lansing’s 54B District Court. The charges are punishable by up to four years in prison. He is being held at the Ingham County Jail on a $500,000 bond in the East Lansing case and a $100,000 bond in the Mason case. His attorney, Kimberly Savage, did not return telephone or email messages seeking comment last week. Thompson also is charged in 55th District Court with a misdemeanor

count of animal neglect because at least one of the dogs, although severely injured, survived. Officials said Thompson bought the Italian greyhounds, a small breed that typically weighs 7 to 14 pounds. It’s not clear based on court transcripts how old the dogs were, but LeBombard occasionally refers to them as puppies. Officials have not said where he purchased them. Authorities say the 13 dogs were killed at Thompson’s Okemos apartment or at an East Lansing complex across the street from MSU’s campus beginning in September 2010. MSU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine suspended Thompson on June 23, officials said, in light of the accusations against him.

Thompson previously lived in Goodyear, Ariz., university records show. His roommate at the Okemos apartment, according to the transcripts, said he lost count of the number of dogs that died or disappeared. In a June 22 interview, Thompson told LeBombard he killed the dogs out of frustration or anger because they defecated on his ﬂoor, urinated in his bed or wouldn’t come to him when he called them. “And he got frustrated they didn’t want to stay with him,” LeBombard said, according to transcripts. “And that made him upset.”

According to court transcripts, Animal Control received an anonymous complaint on June 14 that Thompson owned numerous puppies during the past year and they were disappearing. Several days later, investigators searched Thompson’s Okemos apartment and found a severely injured puppy in the closet. They immediately rushed it to a veterinary hospital. The badly bruised dog was suffering from internal bleeding, the transcripts say.

Now he and his LexiconDon bandmates are headed back east, a tour that will include a stop in East Lansing on Friday, July 15 at Rick’s American Café, 224 Abbot Road in East Lansing. Drummer Eyia, a Haslett high School graduate, joined founding bandmates Alex Koons and Fabian Ordorica in 2009. Guitarist Sam Gabbard joined about six months after Eyia, and all but Eyia are from the West Coast. Kennedy, a former resident of Haslett and East Lansing, graduated from Haslett High in 2000 and was on the varsity swimming team serving as captain in his senior year. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps after the 9/11 attack, trained at Camp Pendleton, Calif. In September 2002, Matthew served with the 7th Communications Battalion in Okinawa, Japan. He was deployed to Iraq

in 2005, connected with Combat Service Support Detachment in Al Asad, Iraq. Again in 2007, he was deployed to Iraq where he served with the Combat Logistics Battalion in Al Asad. Currently a Marine Staff Sergeant, he was selected in 2009 for the Marine Enlisted Commissioning Education Program (MECEP) and assigned to Virginia Tech Naval ROTC. As part of his study of the Russian language, he

spent a month in Moscow and St. Petersburg this past June. He will graduate from Virginia Tech in May, 2012 and will be commissioned as an ofﬁcer in the USMC. Matthew is married to Laura and has an 18-month-old daughter, Autumn. The family currently resides in Blacksburg, Va. OKEMOS – Justine Nakunda’s first time on an airplane came this year. The 13-year-old Ugandan, a student at the Nyaka AIDS Orphans School founded by Okemos resident Jackson Kaguri, has experienced many firsts recently in her journey to recover from burns suffered in an accident with a paraffin lamp. “This is a wonderful, life-changing treat for her,” Kaguri said. She recently spent about two weeks in mid-Michigan while recovering from the first in a planned series of surgeries, carried out at Shriners Hospital Burn Center in Boston. Her visit included attending a meeting of the Rotary Club of East Lansing, whose members welcomed her warmly. Justine – her given name is Vastina – said she was scared during the plane ride but got over her fear by sleeping. The hospital staff in Boston took good care of her, she added. “I’m looking forward to feeling better,” she said. Additional surgeries will be needed to restore her facial structure, with work around her nose and collarbone needed to complement what has already been done around her chin and mouth. Justine has taken well to her new surroundings,

enjoying chance to shop for clothing, groceries and shoes. She misses her family, she said, but has been able to speak to them by phone. She’s been able to keep up with her schooling, especially working on decimals, adjectives, verbs, comprehension and improving her reading skills. Justine will enter sixth grade in the fall, the second to last of the seven primary school levels in Uganda. Rotary Club members fully support Nyaka School, Kaguri said. Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, the school educates students regardless of need who have lost their parents to the disease. Nearly all schools in Uganda require tuition of students, which makes it

The quick thinking of an East Lansing youngster recently helped save all but one of a mother duck’s little ones. On June 26, 10-year-old Natalie Stroup, a ﬁfth-grader this fall at Whitehills School, saw a mother duck near a storm drain in her family’s Whitehills Estates neighborhood. The duck was walking in circles near the drain, Natalie’s mother Susan recounted, trailed by one duckling. When Natalie got closer, she discovered the other ducklings had slipped into the storm drain. The youngster got her dad, John, to help, but even together they couldn’t reach the little ones. A call to the city of East Lansing brought the aid of a city employee – whose name the Stroups didn’t catch – who was able to get the cover off the storm drain and make the rescue. “She was sad one didn’t make it, but she was excited they rescued so many,” Susan Stroup said of her daughter. Linda, meanwhile, was easing her way into the sport. Initially heeding an admonition from her mother that running “wrecks your knees,” she would go for a walk when Joe headed out for a run. But when he wasn’t looking, she would run to catch up with him. These days, running provides both a social outlet and a challenge for the

Their sport has also taught them a thing or two about themselves. “When you do long races, you can push it harder than you think you can,” Linda Pulver said. OKEMOS — Bobbie Hall knew that she could have a promising future in the game of lacrosse in Okemos, even before she began playing the sport competitively. During the spring of 2006, 11-year old Hall, just finishing up her final year of elementary school, was called upon to fill in as a substitute player for her sister, Casey’s middle school lacrosse team. “They didn’t have enough players so they got me a uniform and a stick and told me to just do my best,” Hall remembers. “I always loved watching my sister play the sport, but I didn’t think I could actually play with girls who were three grades ahead of me.” Hall went on to score

a goal in the game as she helped lead the middle school team to a victory. “I fell in love with it right then and there,” Hall said. “I knew from that point, that was the sport I wanted to really focus on.” Five years later, Hall just completed one of the most accomplished seasons of any player throughout the state of Michigan. The Chieftains’ sophomore midﬁelder scored a team-high 85 goals and added 42 assists this season while leading Okemos to a 19-3 record. “She was just a huge part of our offense, and really played a huge role in the success we were able to have as a team this year,” Okemos coach Bill Prahler said of Hall. “A great player, teammate and just an exceptional kid.” While the Chieftains did

not meet their ultimate goal of winning a third consecutive state championship, the team’s 19 wins marked the highest win total of any girl’s lacrosse team in the state this spring. “We knew that expectations would be extremely high coming into this season, and even though we didn’t win the state title, we did have a memorable season and we accomplished a lot as a team,” Hall said. Okemos finished the CAAC season with an undefeated record, including a first-place finish at the first-ever league tournament. The Chieftains also took first-place at the Rockford Invitational Tournament, which Hall described as both her and the team’s best showing of the year. “Those were the best

teams in the state we went up against in that tournament, and we were just awesome that weekend,” she said. “We felt like we had a lot to prove, and we did just that.” In honor of her outstanding sophomore season, Hall was named all league, all region, and was one of two Okemos players to be named to the Division 2 All State team, along with junior Chloe Zdybel. Now that her high school season has come to an end, Hall is competing on a summer travel team as well as attending elite camps across the Midwest. Her long-term goal is to play lacrosse at a Division 1 University, but her shortterm goal remains to get back to the state championship game. “Okemos has made a name for itself in lacrosse,

“We had to pay a pretty heavy price there and it was tough on everyone involved in the program,” Prahler said. “Initially, the girls on the team were down, but they realized it happened, it’s in the past, and that they had to move forward.” The Chieftains went on to win the ﬁrst two games of the postseason, before an 11-10 regional ﬁnal loss to Flint Powers Catholic, the same school Okemos had defeated in both the 2009 and 2010 Divi-

sion 2 state championship games. Despite not winning a state title, the Chieftain’s 19 wins was the highest win total of any team throughout the state. Okemos had seven players named to the all-league team this season, two of which were named All State members. In three years as the Chieftains girls’ varsity lacrosse coach, Prahler has posted a combined record of 73-3, and the future continues to look bright for Okemos down the road. “Our girls all seem to be buying into the program and working hard to continue this great tradition that has been started here,” Prahler said. “The goal is to make both our team and our entire conference the best throughout the state. From the looks of it, I think we are getting closer every day.”

OKEMOS- Okemos senior Julia Grisdela has made a verbal commitment to sign this fall with Division II Findlay. Grisdela, a 5-foot-9 guard, was the Chieftains second leading scorer this past winter, while being named to the all-CAAAC Blue team. She was also a Class A all-area honorable mention selection. Grisdela made her decision to commit to Findlay after she visited the school last weekend with her family. “I always wanted to play at a smaller school and this just felt like a perfect ﬁt for me,” Grisdela said. “I really

like the team they have and all the coaches there are great.” With the graduation of senior Hannah Hoffman, Grisdella will be looked at to be the Chieftains’ top offensive option this coming year. She is looking forward to her senior season and then being able to compete against her former teammate Hoffman. “We’ve talked about it and were both pretty excited,” Grisdela said. “I’m just excited to playing against great competition because I know it will make me a better player.” Findlay ﬁnished 17-10 this past season and shared the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
