Rebuilding E.L. schools urged Dawn Parker

EAST LANSING – A proposal advanced by one member of the East Lansing school board would keep all but one of the district’s elementary schools where they are. George Brookover would like to see Red Cedar, Donley, Marble, Whitehills and Pinecrest elementaries rebuilt on their present sites. The district’s administrative offices would be sold and administrators moved into a portion of the Glencairn Elementary building, with the remainder used for some type of alternative or specialized education.

“No other surrounding community has the attractive mix of downtown, major international university, solid and varied housing stock, diversity and the ability to deliver neighborhood schools,” Brookover wrote in the six-page document. “It therefore seems to me that we should embrace these assets and attempt to preserve them, rather than joining the crowd which is closing schools in the absence of such assets.” By phone Monday, Brookover said he had been considering the substance of his proposal for a couple of months.

EAST LANSING – Longtime city manager Ted Staton is resigning to take a job close to his hometown in Ohio, leaving a legacy praised by the city’s mayor, MSU’s president, and local elected officials. Staton, who has been with the city since 1995, will become city manager of Upper Arlington, Ohio. Upper Arlington is a suburb of Columbus, with a population of 34,000. Staton’s compensation package is to include an annual salary of $180,000, compared to his East Lansing base salary of $145,080. He is likely to begin his new position in mid-October, and has committed to remain with East Lansing for the next 90 days. Staton His leadership will be missed by many fellow community leaders. East Lansing Mayor Victor Loomis served on the committee responsible for bringing Staton to East Lansing from Dayton, Ohio.

While he said he considers the K-8 facilities committee to have done “very, very good” work, Brookover noted his belief that retaining as many elementary schools as possible is advantageous to the East Lansing community. There are other pluses to building new, he added, notably cost. “After going through the high school construction, I’m not very excited about ‘retrofitting’ existing buildings,” Brookover said. “Once we talk about spending money on existing buildings, if we’re

“Since that time, our city has undergone tremendous transformation that includes expansions of our boundaries, commercial and residential development and the addition of top-notch recreational facilities that contribute to the quality of life we enjoy,” Loomis said. “His departure will be deeply felt, but he leaves behind a legacy of accomplishments, not the least of which is an organization of dedicated employees, that

E. L. board turns down poll dlparker@lsj.com

EAST LANSING – School board members July 11 unanimously turned down a proposal by board president Rima Addiego to engage a polling company for a feasibility study among East Lansing residents. The study’s purpose, Addiego said, would be to get a sense of the community’s feelings regarding any changes in the district’s elementary schools.

Such a study would likely cost $10,000, Addiego said, and is routinely done prior to bond issuances of the type ELPS is contemplating. The idea was quickly shot down, however. “I think it has the possibility of muddying the waters,” board member Babs Krause said. “You will still have polarization.” “The ultimate poll,” board member George Brookover noted, “is at the ballot box.”

“I cannot support spending $10,000 on a poll when we have been talking to the public for years about this issue,” board member Donna Rich Kaplowitz added. Board members also approved a resolution for the issuance and sale of 2011 school district refunding bonds, when and if needed. Finance director Richard Pugh said the resolu-

going to do that and if the taxpayers would approve it, aren’t we better off building whole new buildings? My perception, rightly or wrongly, is retrofitting is as or more expensive than

building a whole new building.” The six options laid out by the K-8 facilities committee call for spending between $33 million and $58 million, with choices ranging from keeping all six elementaries open to closing two buildings. Funds would come from a combination of bonding and the extension of existing millages.

Brookover said board members have been “led to believe” building new is possible within that cost range. Any plans would, of course, go through district taxpayers. “They’re the ones to decide what they want their schools to be, not the school board,” he said. Board members held a special work session prior

to their July 11 meeting, and plan another special meeting at 5:30 p.m. Monday, July 18 in the board room at 841 Timberlane. “Please don’t lose sight of the fact that, in all of this, we need to do something,” facilities committee co-chair Amanda BrightMcClanahan told the board. The new position offers Staton a chance to return to his home state, where he and his wife, Carol, will be closer to family that still lives nearby. The Dayton, Ohio native – about an hour from Upper Arlington – called the decision to leave East Lansing bittersweet. “I’ve called this place home for 16 years – more than one-third of my life. It’s a place we love,” Staton said. “I always knew there would be a time in my career when I would go home, but I did not know when it would be. Now how many have said their hearing aids make some sounds too loud, don’t work well in noise, or they can’t tell if they are really helping them hear at all? Audiologists and dispensers try to make hearing aids function the best they can to give the patient a good outcome. But there were always a lot of difficulties surrounding comfort and understanding of speech. Let’s say you have a small child, an average sized woman, wo and a very large man, all with the same hearing loss. All hearing aids would be programmed the same way, according to the hearing aid manufacturers software. But the ear canals themselves must figure into the process, as well. Without diving into too much physics, ear canal size and shape for the child would be quite small. The woman would be close to the average size ear canals and the man’s ear canals would be quite large and long. The child would receive too much power from the hearing aids, the woman’s fitting would be close, and the man’s hearing aids would seem very quiet. All hearing aid manufacturers base their science off the average ear. But no one has the average ear. Live speech mapping is the latest innovative approach to hearing aid fitting which uses natural speech to show how effective digital hearing THEIR HEARING AIDS?

aids are in helping you to hear speech. With digital speech mapping, an actual speech signal, not tones or hissing sounds, is used to test the hearing aids while inserted in the patient’s ears. This allows for the shape and size of the patient’s ear canals to be included in the fitting process, as well as using the most important signal we hear, speech. For hearing aid fittings to be successful, speech must be appropriately amplified with respect to loudness, clarity, and comfort. Soft speech should be perceived as soft, moderate speech sounds should be perceived as moderate, and loud speech sounds should not reach the patient’s discomfort level. Speech mapping helps to provide a clear “visual” sense of the hearing loss, and the benefits or perhaps the limitations that your current hearing aids offer in relation to actual speech. While wearing hearing aids, a tiny probe microphone is inserted into the ear canal while the hearing aids are running, then a stimulus (voices/ music) is used to measure the output and shows if the hearing aids are amplifying sounds appropriately. The Live Speech Map is displayed on a monitor through easily-understood graphics so that you can actually see sounds that are missing and be presented with a clear visual sense of hearing loss and aided benefits relating to actual speech. It allows you to see graphically just how the aid is performing in a live, real world environment. Once we see what sounds you’re missing, we’ll be able to tune your personal hearing aids until it restores the missing speech patterns and tones. So, not only will you hear the difference a hearing aid makes with your speech, you’ll be able to see the sounds being restored visually as well. A successful hearing aid fitting should be a dynamic, patient-centered

who were all quality teams. It’s been a good experience all around.” He said he didn’t know what to expect the first time he walked into the WKAR studio where matches are played, and admitted to a little nervousness for the team’s first game. That vanished quickly, to be replaced by confidence and a steady rhythm of answers. The team’s biggest challenges en route to the final, He said, were traditional rivals DeWitt and Haslett. To their surprise, the final wound up being a nailbiter. “We went into it thinking it would be easy, and it wasn’t,” Sholler said. Okemos went into the final round, called the “lightning round” because of the speed at which questions must be answered, with a slender 20-point lead. It turned out to be just enough, even with a wrong answer on the final question.

OKEMOS – With this year being Whitney Sholler’s first for coaching Quiz Bowl at Okemos High School, she didn’t know what to expect. Sholler definitely didn’t anticipate her team would emerge as grand champions of QuizBusters. The popular long-running show on WKAR – like Jeopardy, but for midMichigan high schoolers – recently concluded its 22nd season. The Chieftains won the Green Division championship, comprised of the larger schools, and then captured a narrow 10-point victory over White Division champion Jackson Christian for the overall title. It’s the school’s fourth championship in QuizBusters history and the first in at least five years. “It’s really an honor to be Grand Champion among all the schools out there,” Highly competitive said incoming senior and The Chieftains’ win over 2011-12 team captain Cody Jackson Christian made for He. must-see viewing – even “There were 64 teams among the staff.

COURTESY PHOTOGRAPH SUNIT PATKE “It was a highly competitive game – we loved it,” host Matt Ottinger said. The executive producer said later it was the most exciting game he could remember. The championship foursome also included 2011 graduates Laura Clark and David Brusstar and incoming junior Mayank Patke. Sholler said the varsity squad placed no lower than third in any of the tournaments they entered.

nament, which Sholler called “just as impressive,” coming as it did against powerhouse schools from southeast Michigan like Detroit Catholic Central. “I was so proud of them,” Sholler said. “They amazed me every time they played.” The Chieftains’ junior varsity – 2011 graduates Mary McGrath and Meg

Scribner, incoming juniors Emily Brereton, Martina Fu and Nick Sambaer and incoming sophomore Sam Natla – also distinguished themselves throughout the season. “Our underclassmen are well-prepared. They’ve had a lot of good experience,” He said. Ottinger said the annual competition usually gets

going in late September, giving teams about a month of practice. The season runs during October and November, picking up again from mid-January through midFebruary. Episodes are taped, with the finals generally shown sometime in May. The single-elimination tournament begins with 64 teams, and a team must win six games to be crowned champion. “These students are so much more than just question answerers. To play our game well, you have to be well-rounded and you have to be a student of life,” Ottinger said. For more information, go online to wkar.org/ quizbusters or become a fan of QuizBusters on Facebook. Okemos students who want to be involved should check with Sholler when school resumes in the fall.

BUSINESS BRIEFS Lansing Economic Area Partnership (Leap, Inc.) announced recently that its president and CEO Denyse Ferguson will be leaving the organization effective in August, to assume a new executive level position within the Cincinnati USA Partnership for Economic Development. “I have had the pleasure of being with the Leap organization from its beginnings, and the honor to serve as its president and CEO for much of that time,” Ferguson said. During her tenure, Ferguson has seen great progress with Kiplinger naming Lansing as one of the nation’s Top 10 Best Cities for Young Adults, the Lansing-East Lansing region posting the seventh highest job gains in the U.S. as reported by the Milken Institute’s Best-Performing Cities 2010 Report, and four

of the regions companies — Liquid Web, TechSmith, ICS Marketing and Top Flite Financial — landing on Inc. Magazine’s 5,000 fastest-growing private U.S. companies for 2010. “Denyse took on the leadership of Leap during a transitional time, hit the ground running and never slowed down,” Steve Alexander, Leap’s board chair and PNC Bank executive vice president of corporate banking for Michigan, said. “She championed the development of the region’s first ever long-term strategic plan, Greater Lansing Next, thus leaving a powerful legacy in our region for many years to come.” “While Denyse will be missed at Leap, we are proud to have homegrown Lansing talent being chosen to head up economic development efforts in a larger market,” Elizabeth Haar, CEO of Accident Fund Holdings, Inc. and past Leap board chair, said.

Sparrow takes part in nurse leader project Sparrow is among a group of hospitals selected to participate in a national project in which nurse leaders work on innovative ways to care for patients. Sparrow is one of some 45 hospitals nationwide, and only two in Michigan, participating in the Center for Care Innovation and Transformation initiative. The initiative is at the front of a national movement to engage frontline staff in devising changes to improve nurses’ delivery of care and daily work lives. “It is exciting. It helps nurses be creative, use their critical thinking skills and really get involved in developing best practices to improve patient care,” says Elizabeth Henry, senior vice president and chief nursing officer.

OKEMOS —

Taylor Moton, a 6-foot-6, 280-pound offensive and defensive tackle for the Chieftain football team, has verbally committed to play in college at Western Michigan. Moton has been a two-year starter for Okemos and earned all-CAAC Blue honorable mention last fall. The senior lineman is the first Okemos football player to commit to a Division 1 college program in Paul Palmer’s eight years as head coach.

used as an offensive tackle in college. Palmer is confident that Moton has all the skills for the next level. “He’s very young and very raw, but he has the ideal body frame and athleticism to be a heck of a college football player,” Palmer said. “The skills are there, and he certainly has the right work ethic to put it all together.” Moton, who plans to study criminal justice, said that while it was a difficult decision, Western Michigan was always on top of his list.

Okemos girls still making waves — After completing a memorable season, which concluded with a second consecutive state championship, the Okemos girl’s water polo team continues to make more waves. Three separate members of the Chieftains’ state

title team were named High School All-Americans by the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association (NISCA). Junior goalie Nicole Baron was honored as a second-team member, freshman Katie Dudley made the third-team, and

OKEMOS

senior Monique Pentecost was chosen as a fourthteam member. The duo of Dudley and Pentecost combined for 175 goals and 77 assists this season for Okemos. In goal, Baron recorded 320 saves, while giving up just 97 total goals for a save percentage

of 76.7 percent. That mark ranks second in school history behind Pentecost, who played goalie for the Chieftains in 2010. All three players were also horned as All-State members for their outstanding play this season.

In honor of July being Parks and Recreation Month, the city would also like to extend a special recognition to the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund (MNRTF) - which has contributed significantly to the growth and enhancement of the City of East Lansing’s park system. Since 1995, the city has been awarded seven MNRTF grants totaling close to $3 million. Township resident Mike Egan and his trusty van stuffed with tools and bike parts is a familiar sight in East Lansing. Egan, who lives in the house on St. Joe near Marketplace with the old bike in the yard, its basket filled with summer flowers, has been part of the Share-aRide program in East Lansing for the last 15 years. Located in two big red trailers behind the fire station on Abbot Road, Sharea-Bike uses volunteers like Egan to refurbish donated bikes and give them away to people who really need them. He figures he and fellow volunteers have provided reliable bike transportation for more than 600 people over the last two years., between 20 and 40 on a

Delta Township resident and bike expert Mike Egan shakes hands with a very satisfied Liz Owczarzak on July 9. Owczarzak says the bike refurbished by Egan will make it much easier for her to get to doctors’ appointments and to class at LCC. MARY JO WHITE/LCN summer weekend. One of them is Connie Zheng, a recent MSU grad who was getting a bike July 9 for her son Andy, 13, and couldn’t say enough good things about Egan. “Fixing bikes is second nature to Mike and he’s very

patient,” said Zheng, who rides a Share-a-Bike bicycle herself. “This (program) really saved our lives.” Egan doesn’t listen very hard to the accolades; he’s too busy fixing the next bike on his battered white bike stand set up next to his

involved in several bike clubs around town,” said Egan, who works for Hasselbring-Clark. He’s a good listener, too, paying attention to what a “customer” needs and looking through the program’s inventory to find it. On July 9, for instance, Egan took Liz Owczarzak, who has some back issues, through the bikes hanging in one of the red trailers until they found the right one, which he then adjusted to make sure it fit her comfortably. A spontaneous warm handshake was her thank you to Egan. “This bike will be great for riding downtown,” said Owczarzak, an LCC student in the geographical information system program. “It will also be helpful in getting to doctors’ appointments.” East Lansing resident and GM retiree Ronald Fowler was another volunteer who worked steadily at his own bike stand throughout the morning. So were Ron Zeeb, Dave Mead and Kyle Freund, all from Lansing. Doug Taylor from Holt, who used to be the president of UAW local 602, and his grandson Jonathan Olson, showed up with a trailer full of donated bikes. With lots of willing hands,

they were unloaded in a few minutes. Dick Janson, who lives in Perry and worked as a custom software designer for over 20 years, kept the paperwork flowing. Bikes come from everywhere: East Lansing’s Project Pride recycling day, the police department, the St. Vincent DePaul store in Lansing, landlords who inherit student bikes when their tenants graduate and many, many homeowners. “People know we’re here,” Egan said. The program works simply and easily, just like a well-oiled bike shifts smoothly from gear to gear. Each person who wants a bike must bring a letter from a human services agency, a religious organization or an employer that vouches for their need. It’s a first-come, first served system, with each “customer” assigned a volunteer mechanic. Some are new to the United States and uncomfortable with English, but somehow they, too, find the bikes they need and ride away smiling. Some are very persistent. Cliff Johnson, 66, for instance, rode off on a very nice Schwinn on July 9. His previous Share-a-Bike bicycle had been stolen. All bikes are licensed with the East Lansing Police Department and their owners offered a brandnew helmet.
