EAST LANSING – All around the East Lansing Family Aquatic Center July 13, people played in the water or relaxed on lounge chairs. At a pre-arranged signal, some patrons donned orange baseball caps and sunglasses and got into position near the park’s entrance. The group then broke into a dance routine choreographed to the 1960s classic “Wipe Out”. The event was actually a well-planned “flash mob” by East Lansing Parks and Recreation staff. Participants were recruited through a variety of methods, including e-mail and social media. Thirty-five people made the final performance, recreation/youth program coordinator Kathleen Miller said. “I think it was a fantastic turnout,” Miller added. The final tally was out of 50 people who originally signed up, virtually all by e-mail. “It was nice to have families, kids and all ages,” Miller said. The flash mob took place in conjunction with National Parks Month, sponsored by the National Recreation and Parks Association. “Rock Your Park” was the theme for the month, out of which the flash mob idea was born.

The flash mob itself was inspired by the 1965 film “Beach Blanket Bingo”, one of a series of films starring Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon. The dance routine got people’s attention, Hardy said. “People actually stopped swimming and looked at us,” she noted.

“I’m concerned about our students not being in the same building for a long period of time and not being able to form a school community.”

Students will be pondering this question all week during Advanced Myth Busters as they experiment to finally get the answers to science’s most mythical questions (ages 9 to 12). There’s plenty of space for computer users down the hallway, and a colorful carpet with ABCs and 123s decorates the children’s area. A well-beloved mural

Chapman said the movers will need two weeks just to bring over the library’s 35,000 item collection, after which the staff will have as much as two more weeks to

put everything in its proper place. The present library building has a capacity of only 20,000 items, and far fewer people, although that did not stop the nearly 100 attendees of a recent summer reading program. Chapman thanked Haslett patrons in advance for their patience during the move.

cated since late March have ranged anywhere from $33 million, which would renovate the existing buildings, to upwards of $60 million for new construction. However it is carried out, the project would be financed primarily through bond proceeds and sinking fund monies. Superintendent Dr. David Chapin counseled the board to shift their focus from specific schools to what configuration would best suit the district’s needs. After the configuration is chosen, board members may then choose which buildings fit into the plan.

“No matter what configuration we choose, students will be successful. They will make it work,” Addiego said. “We are trying to do something that has traction for 20 years, not four or five or eight or seven.” One key issue in the decision appears to be the number of transitions between schools. Some studies have suggested the fewer times students have to change to a new building during their school years, the more successful they are in their learning. “I’m concerned about our students not being in the same building for a long period of time and not being able to form a school community,” McDonald Middle School principal Merem Frierson said.

“Our time is limited with them right now.” One plan, as advocated by board member George Brookover, would move administration offices to one portion of Glencairn Elementary and open the rest of the building to other uses. That idea doesn’t sit well with Northlawn resident Ben Eysselinck, who spoke during public comment on behalf of the Glencairn Neighborhood Association. “While Glencairn would welcome your offices as our neighbors, we would prefer you kept the children there,” Eysselinck said. Dancers Project seeks to energize community 42 dancers perform five shows at three different locations OKEMOS — In its start-up season, the

Community Dance Project involved four choreographers and eight dancers. Now, six years later, 16 choreographers and 42 dancers will bring their infectious energy to five shows, four dates and three locations, with two different dance programs. And dance fans can afford to attend them all because zero is still the cost of admission — although donations are welcome. Program A is comprised of dances with smaller casts (1-5 dancers) and includes works by Clara Martinez, a dance major at Ohio State University (recently ranked the No. 1 dance program in the country); Okemos High School junior Grace French and Lea-Janell Mitchell, who this fall will attend the prestigious Hartt Conservatory for Dance. rowing up in New Boston, close to Detroit Metro Airport, Tony Caselli recalls drifting off to sleep to the sound of Ernie Harwell’s voice calling a Detroit Tigers game. Two months into the run of “Ernie: The Play” at Detroit’s City Theatre, the artistic director of the Williamston Theatre is still marveling at the chance he’s been given to help celebrate an icon of baseball. “It’s nice to know I’ve had a hand in honoring Ernie Harwell, and in such a way that people are moved by it,” Caselli, the play’s director, said. “(‘Ernie’) captures baseball — the heart of it, the nostalgia of it and the magic of it.” “Ernie: The Play”, written by longtime Free Press columnist Mitch Albom, is dedicated to the legendary broadcaster who was the “Voice of Summer” for

Tigers fans from 1960 until his retirement in 2002. Harwell died in May 2010 at age 92. The play opened April 28 and was to have closed in late June, but high demand pushed the must-close date to Sunday, Aug. 21.

The two-character story stars Will David Young as Harwell and T.J. Corbett as “Boy.” Young often makes viewers forget the real Harwell has passed on, while Corbett is the embodiment of everyone who has ever pressed their ear to a radio or stretched out a glove in hopes of a foul ball. The setting is September 2009 in a tunnel beneath Comerica Park, where Harwell is waiting to go out and make a farewell speech to a packed ballpark. During a rain delay, a mysterious young man coaxes Harwell into recounting his life’s highlights, both professional and personal. Longtime Tigers fans will find many laughs in “Ernie”, and should also be prepared with tissues. Caselli has been active in Michigan theater for nearly 20 years, including

Preparation for the production included access to spots in Comerica Park most fans only dream of seeing, including the tunnel where Harwell stood prior to making his farewell speech.

What do you want us to do?” Caselli recalled. Longtime Harwell family friend Gary Spicer assisted with the loan of photos from the Ernie Harwell Sports Collection at the Detroit Public Library, all of which helped bring the production together. “Ernie: The Play” tries to strike a balance between dyed-in-the-wool baseball fans and theatergoers eager for a good story, “ Caselli said.

EAST LANSING — Cutler Martin’s pursuit of playing college hockey and one day making an NHL roster has gained major exposure earlier this month. Martin, a senior at East Lansing High School, was one of 120 players from across the country selected to compete in the U17 USA Hockey Player Development Camp in Rochester, N.Y. from July 7-15. Martin was one of eight players selected from Michigan. “It’s a huge honor- everyone who knows about hockey knows about it,” Cutler said of the prestigious camp. “It gave me a chance to play both with and against the best of the best, and allowed me to see how I stack up against them.” During the camp, players are evaluated by the USA Hockey national scouting program, college and

junior recruiters and professional scouts. While the coaches and scouts were prohibited from talking with the players, it did allow Martin and others to get some much-anticipated exposure. “All the big schools were there,” said Martin, who

does plan to play hockey collegiately in the future. “I love going up against top competition, and there was plenty of that…that’s for sure.” In addition to playing hockey, members of the camp also took part in wiffle ball and softball games, which focused on the teamunity aspect of sports. Martin said, “It was cool to see where everyone was from and what they’re like. I’d definitely suggest the camp to anyone in the future.” For now, Martin will focus on completing his senior year at East Lansing High School while competing for Victory Honda, which is an elite travel hockey team based out of Plymouth. Martin was drafted this past spring by the United State’s Hockey League’s TriCity Storm. He plans to join that team full-time upon his high school graduation next spring.

ALBION - The East Lansing Post 205 baseball team saw another tournament championship just slip away from under their wings last weekend.

Heartbreaker The team finished pool play with a win over the Michigan Elite Storm, but then dropped an 8-7 heartbreaker to ATH Stampede

in last Sunday’s semifinal matchup at the USSA Gold Glove Classic Baseball Tournament. In Post 205’s 11-4 win over Elite Storm, it was three Williamston players that shined bright. Dylan Monette went 3 for 4 with two RBIs, Dylan Schultz was 2 for 3 with a run, and Corbin Austin had two hits and

scored two runs. In the semifinal loss, Monette and Will Lovell of Lansing Catholic each had two hits and an RBI, while Williamston’s Nick Jump was 2 for 5 with a run. Post 205 was scheduled to complete in the Palomino Regional tournament this weekend in Mount Pleasant.
