NOVEMBER ELECTION
Voters will have choices Dawn Parker dlparker@lsj.com
Voters in East Lansing and the Okemos schools will have more to choose from on the November ballot than in recent years. The Aug. 16 filing deadline saw five entrants for three spots on the East Lansing City Council, three candidates for one seat on the East Lansing School Board and four entrants for three spots on the Okemos Public Schools board. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 8.
East Lansing All three council incumbents – Diane Goddeeris,
Roger Peters and Nathan Triplett – will seek new four-year terms. They are joined by Don Power, who made his candidacy official last week, and Hans Larsen, who ran unsuccessfully in 2009. Peters was first elected to the council in 2007. “I really enjoy the work,” Peters said of his decision to run again. “I enjoy serving, and I have enjoyed working with other members of the council, with Ted (Staton) and with the city staff, and with the multitude of community organizations.” If he is re-elected, Peters’ goals include engaging in the process of select-
ing a new city manager. Long-time city manager Ted Staton will step down in early October to return to his home state of Ohio. “I think that process will take a fair amount of time,” Peters said. As council members conduct their search, Peters said they will take into account feedback from focus groups, including what experiences they want the next city manager to bring to his or her work in East Lansing. Peters would also pay continued close attention to the city’s budget and overall financial management. “I think we have manSee CHOICES, Page 9

EAST LANSING — During a meeting that lasted more than four hours Wednesday, parents and others told East Lansing School Board members they want to keep their neighborhood schools. The board heard them, asking architectural and construction firm representatives to provide detailed financial estimates for renovating the district’s six elementary schools. Those estimates — potentially around $42 million — would be considered alongside projections for constructing new buildings. “There are so many people in the community who are saying, ‘I’m renovating my house — renovate my school,’” board President Rima Addiego said. The cost of a new building has been pegged at around $60 million, to be financed by extending an existing millage for debt of 7 mills. Representatives of Kalamazoo-based architectural firm TowerPinkster presented an analysis of the six existing sites,
ranking them on factors including site size, expansion potential and ability to reuse. The ranking — which TowerPinkster personnel admitted had some “subjective” elements, put Donley on top. Glencairn and Whitehills placed fifth and sixth, respectively. Many people who spoke at the meeting favored the choice dubbed “Option C” in the K-8 facilities report given to the board in May. Option C would preserve all six existing schools, while other choices would shutter one or more buildings. “The thing that will attract young families is the neighborhoods, and East Lansing has that,” former MacDonald Principal Rich Mikel said. “I think in the future (neighborhood schools) will be a magnet for young families to repopulate our housing.” Some spoke of their willingness to give additional financial support to the schools. “I’m willing to save the schools, and I’m willing to pay more money to do it,” Melissa DeRosia said. A final decision by the board is expected by Sept. 30.

Sen. Whitmer says voters duped by GOP agenda Dawn Parker dlparker@lsj.com
LANSING – Just past the six-month mark, some things at the State Capital are the way they’ve always been. Many things have changed, though, Sen. which has Whitmer given State Sen. Gretchen Whitmer much to consider. Whitmer’s district includes all of Ingham County except for an area
in the southern part of the county. The East Lansing Democrat and Senate Majority Leader has seen much in her first half-year on the job – and she likes some things better than others. “We haven’t shut down state government, so there’s always an upside,” Whitmer deadpanned. EAST LANSING - In a field of green Spartan T-shirts, Mark Coughlin stuck way out in the crowd Tuesday. But the Williamston man, who wore an orange shirt, swore he was no less a fan as he prepared to wait 45 minutes under the hot sun for a chance to meet Michigan State University coach Mark Dantonio. “My green’s right in my heart,” the welder said, pointing with pride to his chest. Coughlin, who wrestled for MSU in the 1980s, was among several hundred fans who swarmed the ninth annual “Meet the Spartans” event for a chance to meet football players or Dantonio, get an autograph and wish them luck for the coming season. The event was held in the Albert Street parking lot in downtown East Lansing. Fans waiting in line said they were excited about the season after the team tied with Wisconsin and Ohio
State last season for the Big Ten championship. “I love football. I look forward to the fall,” said Dan Castillo, 46, of Lansing, who also was waiting to get an autograph from Dantonio. “We have big expectations. This year, I hope they can win it outright.” Chants of “Go Green! ONONDAGA — Shirley Lacchia of East Lansing, who passed away in 2010 at 84, has left Highfields Inc, a human services organization serving at risk families and children, an estate gift of $84,000. Lacchia decided to donate the gift because she had struggled to raise two children alone for nine years, after her first marriage ended in divorce. She set up the trust fund with her third husband, who died in 1999. “Lacchia’s generosity will help Highfields expand its programming and serve more at-risk children and families,” says President/CEO Brian Philson. “It’s the generous support we get from donors that helps Highfields change the course for so many struggling families.”

Michigan wines please judges in competition EAST LANSING — East Lansing was awash in Michigan wine recently as 25 wine experts gathered Aug. 2 at the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center for the 34th annual Michigan Wine and Spirits Competition. Judges included wine experts from around the country, including Doug Frost, who is both a Master of Wine and Master Sommelier; two Master Sommeliers and internationally known authors, winemakers and wine educators. Leading the group through the day was food and wine writer Christopher Cook, who judged at the competition for 12 years before becoming its superintendent in 2001. Cook is also a judge at
wine competitions throughout the United States and abroad. There was a great variety of wines entered by newer wineries throughout Michigan, with several garnering medals, including a Raspberry Wine produced by Garden Bay Winery in the Upper Peninsula that won Best of Class Fruit Wine. The Michigan competition is a favorite for many of the judges, as they are eager to try new wines from the state’s rapidly growing industry. “The Michigan wine industry continues to expand and offer quality wines with fun and excitement. It’s why Michigan wines and winery tasting
rooms are growing in popularity,” said veteran judge Joe Borrello, president of Tasters Guild International, which sponsored the Best of Class Dessert trophy. Fifty-three of the state’s 84 wineries entered 367 wines for this year’s competition, which is open only to wine and spirits produced from Michigan grapes and other fruit. Gold medals were awarded to a wide variety of wines — from bone-dry reds to deliciously sweet ice wines — from all of Michigan’s major grape-growing areas. At the end of the day, judges awarded the top “Best of Class” awards to eight wines from a group of 51 gold medal winners,
including seven double gold. James VanDerKolk, with Elite Brands, was “stunned by the depth of quality in the dry white wines from 2010, and very pleasantly surprised by the high-quality dry reds tasted from 2010.” Judges experienced just a sampling of red wines from the 2010 vintage, which is expected to be exceptional, as Michigan enjoyed a long, warm growing season that allowed red grapes to ripen more fully than in recent years. Most of the reds from 2010 will be released over the next year. “I was happy to see the overall Merlot quality,” said Master Sommelier Made-
line Triffon, a veteran judge of this competition. “The dry white sweeps (Best of Class round) were a privilege to judge, so many good wines! Every year, my pride and confidence in our wines grows.” The top award-winners are: • Best of Class Dry White: Chateau Fontaine – 2010 Dry White Riesling • Best of Class Dry Red: Fenn Valley Vineyards – Capriccio • Best of Class Sparkling Wine: L. Mawby – Cremant Classic • Best of Class SemiDry White (tie): Fenn Valley Vineyards – 2010 Riesling, Tabor Hill – 2010 Gewurztraminer • Best of Class Rosé:
Forty-Five North – 2010 Rosé of Cabernet Franc • Best of Class Dessert Wine: Black Star Farms – 2008 A Capella Ice Wine • Best of Class Fruit Wine: Garden Bay Winery – Raspberry Wine A complete list of medalwinning wines is available online at www.michigan wines.com. The Michigan Wine and Spirits Competition is sponsored by the Michigan Grape and Wine Industry Council, which is administered by the Michigan Department of Agriculture & Rural Development. “While many hardworking taxpayers are struggling financially – fighting to keep our neighborhood schools alive – the current, groupthinking City Council has become completely unresponsive to the voices and needs of the people,” Larsen wrote in an e-mail. “I have a proven track record of being a critical thinker, with excellent decision-making skills, and for having the integrity and courage to speak up for what is right.” The three seeking to replace long-time school board member George Brookover, who will not run again, are Konrad Hittner, Hillary Henderson and Bill Weckesser. The important thing is we have the optimal result for all of us.” If re-elected, Goddeeris would like to see the city continue economic development initiatives, despite trying times, work to select the next city manager and work with area schools, as well as continue to pursue environmental improvements outlined in various city plans. “I’m committed to seeing some of those initiatives put into place,” she said. Larsen would like to rein in “reckless” spending, stop what he called “crony capitalism” and put the focus on “efficient and essential” city services.

EATON RAPIDS - The young chefs at Le Chat Gourmet’s Summer Cooking Camp in Eaton Rapids aren’t big on frozen pizza or mac and cheese from a box. Instead, they’re into creating their own recipes using fresh, simple ingredients, then cooking from scratch. On Aug. 5 three teams of young cooks were engaged in an Iron Chef competition on their last day of camp, with three judges ready to rate them on taste, originality, presentation and the cleanliness of their work area. Jessica Mohlman and Katie Hoffman of Mason teamed up with Amelia Arnold of East Lansing to create a cheesy chicken biscuit pizza flavored with tarragon and rosemary. All three girls, whose biscuits were made from scratch, are 9 years old. Lansing resident Jonathan Riley, 13, Jackson Vukovic, 8, and 10-year-old
Colton Flynn created a stuffed green pepper recipe featuring seasoned rice and smoked sausage. Riley goes to East Lansing’s McDonald Middle School and Vukovic to St. Thomas Aquinas. Flynn was visiting from Warren. The third team, 11-yearold Connor McCornack from East Lansing, Alexis Hereza, 10, from Williamston and 13-year-old Michele Nussdorfer from Eaton Rapids, made a macaroni and cheese pie with a bacon strip crust woven like a lattice. Everyone made sure to use the child-pleasing “mystery ingredient” of the week: Colby-Jack cheese. Before the plates were presented to the judges, the young cooks headed for Le Chat Gourmet’s herb gardens for fresh basil, tarragon and rosemary to use as garnishes. Nussdorfer is a veteran of last year’s camp and sometimes uses her recipes to cook at home, according to her mom, Sheri, who was waiting to taste the attractive dishes.
“She’s been interested in cooking and learning how to put different flavors together,” Sheri said, adding that Michelle also likes to noodle around in the kitchen with her older brother, Ethan, 20, who spent a summer cooking at a resort in Colorado. Michelle says her favorite recipe, which she learned last year, is calzones. The chief cook and bottle washer at camp is Denene Vincent, affectionately known as “the Chef,” owner of Le Chat Gourmet. On Iron Chef day Vincent moved from team to team doing what all good teachers do - making suggestions and enouraging her young charges. “Any of these dishes could be served in a restaurant,” Vincent said, adding that she especially enjoys watching the kids put together everything they’ve learned during their week of camp. The stuffed pepper team, for instance, added cayenne peppers to their dish for the presentation as

East Lansing will search for new city manager Louise Knott Ahern lkahern@lsj.com
EAST LANSING — When Coun-

When one of them becomes convinced the hospital’s administrator, a nun of potentially lethal machinations is out to do him in, the three set in motion a daring plan to make their escape once and for all, if not to Indochina, then at least as far as the poplar trees on the hill. ocial networking did not begin with the Internet. It probably started with stories around a campfire. After that people figured out how to make ink and record stories, rather than having just a few people memorize them. Later, libraries were created because it’s much easier to find a stationary building filled with books than some wandering griot with “The Iliad” stored in
GUEST COLUMN Betsy Hull his head. People all over the ancient world traveled to Alexandria to visit its library. Then, like now, the library was a civic attraction, not only for the scrolls but for the people one would meet while browsing. It was a place where the social net-
worked. But the library was not just a place for the wellborn, the high-brow or the mighty. It was a place where anyone could go educate themselves about algebra or to be entertained reading the play “The Birds,” which used to be a comedy before university professors turned it into required reading. Libraries are still a place where everyone is welcome. Some might say

Council members and city staff are mum on what they are looking for in a new city manager. Goddeeris said she doesn’t want to pre-determine what kind of criteria she will be looking for in Staton’s replacement without resident participation. “I won’t be part of a search process without community input,” Goddeeris said. “It’s such an important job. It’s key to how we move forward as a city. We have to be very deliberate. This is not a rush job.” The council will form at least two committees with representatives from neighborhood associations, MSU student groups, city labor unions and staff and other community members. The process is similar to how the city conducted its search for a new police chief last year when former Chief Tom Wibert left. The council also has asked Staton to prepare a draft list of characteristics that might be helpful for the next city manager. Staton’s departure is significant not only because his tenure in East Lansing is the second-longest in the city’s history, but also because the city has several unfinished projects launched under his leadership — including the redevelopment of the East Village section of the city and the City Center II project. The project has been put on hold because of a downturn in the construction industry due to the economy, said Tim Dempsey, the city’s planning director. The City Center II

project also has faced financial hiccups but is finally moving forward, Staton said. Staton said he hopes to still be here when the
