HASLETT — Meridian Township fire officials will investigate whether contractors working at a house under construction on Lake Lansing contributed to a fire last week that destroyed the structure, a home next door and damaged a third home, according to Chief Fred Cowper. Fire investigators have photos and video footage, along with witness state-

A permit is required for construction fires. “If that’s what was going on, we’ll get to the bottom of it,” Cowper said. “Right now we’re not ruling out anything.” The weather played a significant role in the spread of the fire and for firefighters on the scene. MERIDIAN TWP. – The Central Fire Station in Okemos will not close. By a 4-3 vote during a hotly debated five-hour meeting Oct. 18, the Meridian Township Board shifted $75,000 in the proposed budget to make repairs at the Central Fire Station, built in the 1950s, and
pay for engineering work that may some day be used to build a new fire station in Okemos. The $75,000 was originally set aside for the construction of a heated garage at the Public Safety building on Clinton Street to house one ambulance, plus funds for a washing apparatus. A new fire station is beeing planned for Okemos to replace the Central station but voter-approval of a tax is needed in See STATION, Page 4

INGHAM COUNTY – Eric Schertzing has participated in numerous recall petition hearings during his tenure on the Ingham County Elections Commis-
sion. But the East Lansing resident, who by statute sits on the three-member board along with County Clerk Mike Bryanton and Chief Probate Judge R. George Economy, Schertzing said after their Oct. 17 meeting that the use of recall petitions
has steadily climbed in recent years. “There were a couple of local issues these last couple of years, then the state-level stuff really exploded this year,” Schertzing said. “Are people frustrated because of the economy, or by the coarseness of politics? How much of this is driven by the economy?” Schertzing, Bryanton See RECALL, Page 11

Station Continued from Page 1
November 2012 to pay for the new building. Where a new station would be built in Okemos and what it would include have not been decided. The board has not formally voted to put the tax issue on the ballot. Earlier this month, the Okemos fire station was proposed just to be closed overnight. Since then officials proposed shutting it down. Township supervisor Susan McGillicuddy voted no on shifting the money to be used for the Okemos station, as did trustees Brett Dreyfus and Lynn Och-
berg. McGillicuddy said she believes “there are a lot of positives” in trying out an different approach with the Central station. “The benefit I see is there’s time to make a plan and time to collect valuable information - what do we need, where would it be located, how much would it cost,” she added. Ochberg spoke of the “prospect of profit” for the township should the property be sold, but others weren’t so sure. “Are we going to get very much for that property? I don’t think so,” trustee Elizabeth LeGoff said. LeGoff, John Veenstra, Clerk Mary Helmbrecht and Treasurer Julie Brixie favored the shift of money for the Okemos station.
Township manager Gerald Richards said he is aware of some water leakage through the roof at the Okemos station, while other repairs are to be determined “We will look at the building in its entirety to see what makes the most sense to repair and upgrade,” he added. The meeting, which lasted more than five hours, was marred several times by contention – much having to do with the fate of the Central fire station. Trustee John Veenstra asked early in the meeting to have the budget treated as a discussion item, rather than be voted upon. “There has been so much focus on the issue of what to do with the dire station that the rest of the budget
has had too little attention,” he said. Veenstra and LeGoff were the only board members voting yes on his proposal. The 2012 budget – which the board passed unanimously – shows general fund revenues of $16.614 million and expenditures of $16.610 million, yielding a small surplus. Summer 2011 tax bills declined 2.3 percent, Richards told the board in his manager’s message, and indicators point to a further 5 percent decline in summer 2012. Wages have been frozen at all levels of employment and are not expected to rise again for two to three years. Some hiring is taking place, but on a part-time basis.

Taste of Okemos hosts 17 eateries
Towne Courier
OKEMOS – Where else can you sample menus from a variety of Okemos and East Lansing-area food establishments, all in one location at the same time? Okemos High School’s Vocal Music Program will again provide the community an opportunity to “taste test” nearly 30 culinary creations of new and established food restaurants at the Twelfth Annual Taste of Okemos event on Saturday, Oct. 29 at Okemos High School. All proceeds from the fund-raiser support the widely recognized high school program, led by OHS Vocal Music Director Deb Borton-McDonough. Last year’s event raised more than $6,000, which was used to purchase new uniforms, music, fund transportation to vocal performances throughout the state, and provide for many other items which would have been unavailable due to budget cuts. “I’ve lived in Okemos for a long time and never cease to be awed by the community’s generosity and excitement about music and our kids,” said Borton-McDonough.

PARTICIPATING RESTAURANTS Restaurants represented include Buffalo Wild Wings, Coffee and Friends, Copper, Dusty’s Cellar, El Azteco, Enso, Grand Traverse Pie Company, Lou and Harry’s Grill, McAlister’s Deli, Noodles and Company, Okemos Dairy, Okemos Food Service, Panchero’s, Panera Bread, Pizza House, Stillwater Grill and Sultan’s.

“The Taste of Okemos is so fabulous because of that very generous spirit, found in my students, their parents, our food vendors, and the whole community.” Held in the Commons area of the high school from 2 to 4 p.m., nearly 30 area vendors will offer selections ranging from traditional American cuisine to Mexican and Middle Eastern for the minimal cost of $15 for adults, $10 for senior citizens and children aged 6-10, and $5 for children age five and under. Tickets may be purchased at the door on the day of the event. The volunteer parent organization, chaired this year by David Mackson,
work closely with the choir students to make this event possible. While the parents are responsible for securing the vendors and promoting the event, the students take responsibility for all the duties the day of the event, including set-up, serving, and clean-up. “I have always loved participating in the Taste of Okemos and sampling new restaurants,” said OHS Treble Ensemble member Andrea Lulich, “This year I’m really excited to be a part of the volunteer crew; I get to eat lots of yummy food and help raise money for our choir programs. It’s the best of both worlds!” — From Okemos Vocal Music

Cowper said there were “huge” whitecaps on Lake Lansing. Fire broke out shortly before 12:30 p.m. Monday Oct. 17 at a home at 5995 E. Lake Drive owned by Lee and Tunde Rigel. Strong winds quickly spread the flames several yards away to a house under construction next door. Lee Rigel an optometrist with VisionCare Associates in East Lansing. the state’s 83 counties – to decide whether the petitions go forward. Ballenger also foresees a time where the Legislature could attempt to reword state recall election language. “The question is – what really are the criteria? No one is really sure. It’s obvious something should be done about it,” he said. On the whole, however, Ballenger isn’t in favor of any recalls. “Grounds for a recall probably should be confined to things like gross criminal neglect or malfeasance,” he said. “Just because you don’t like the way someone voted on (a bill) and you want to get rid of them now, that’s just a bad practice for a democracy. You will always have voters angry at the way someone has voted, but that is what regularly scheduled elections are for.” Sandler said the petitions against Meadows and Byrum will be refiled.
Once filed, the commission has a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 20 days to consider a hearing. The criteria for what is, and what’s not clear language on a recall petition was evident in Williamston and Vevay Township. On the local level, a petition to recall Williamston Mayor Michelle Van Wert has been filed two times Williamston resident Kent Hall, each one rejected by a unanimous commission vote. The first failed attempt claimed Van Wert caused excessive work and stress for the city’s staff and was responsible for the city’s growing legal tab. The second cited actual legal fees paid by the city and claimed the mayor did nothing to prevent the costs. That, too, was shot down as being vague. Sometimes the actual recall language is clear but hardly matters in a highly charged political atmosphere, A second try on a peti-
tion to recall three Vevay Township board members 11 was approved. The language said the board should be recalled for “budgeting $23,000 for attorney fees in the 2011-12 budget adopted on March 30, 2011 and approved at the April 4, 2011 meeting.” The targets of the recall Vevay Township Supervisor Ron Weesies, clerk JoAnn Keene and trustee Dan Ruttan, point out that budgeting funds for attorney fees is a normal function of government. The recall targets argue that recall has little to do with budgeting attorney fees and is more about a clash of personalities. Township officials also say an election will costly. The petitioners say they have enough signatures to get the recall on the ballot in February. Since clerk is the target of the recall, the county will have to administer the election, costing the township thousands of dollars.

on both sides of the aisle, with more than two dozen campaigns at some point in the process. Only one of those efforts, against state Rep. Paul Scott, R-Grand Blanc, appears to have a chance of going to the voters in the near future. Ballenger says recall attempts on Democrats like Byrum, Meadows and Whitmer all appear to be in retaliation for Democratic campaigns against Republicans. And while Democrats say they’re innocent, “Unfortunately their fingerprints are all over these recalls,” he added. “The Republicans are turning around and saying, ‘Two can play at this game’.” Like Schertzing, Ballenger has only witnessed an escalation of the use of recall petitions in the last three years. Ballenger is concerned about the use of threemember election commissions – one for each of

I will be voting no on E. Lansing bond proposal M
y recent tour of Red Cedar was a surreal experience. Everything seemed to be in order; lots of kids, smiling, laughing, organized and well-behaved. The building looked clean and functional. So why is it targeted for closure? If that question cannot be answered succinctly then how can the bond issue be supported? Perhaps we need to close Red Cedar so that we can consolidate the kids into “21st Century Schools.” These are billed as cutting edge, fewer walls and more open spaces. And more than likely larger capacity — translation, fewer sections per grade, more kids per class room and fewer teachers. Our small elementary buildings with lots of class-
GUEST COLUMN Bill Weckesser rooms are probably our best insurance for smaller class sizes. And for teachers, classrooms can mean job security. Maybe we need to close Red Cedar because the other buildings don’t meet our current needs. For instance, as one of my opponents in the school board election has pointed out, the cafeterias are inadequate. But that’s like bulldozing my whole house because my wife wants to upgrade the kitchen. We’ve been told that parking is a mess. Yet it looks to me like parents want their kids to walk to school. Does Red Cedar need to be closed because we can’t afford it? I’d bet that we
could save about $150,000 or so in busing if we went back to a K-5 or K-6 configuration and had as many kids walk as possible. Add that to a savings of perhaps $450,000 as faculty will likely end up paying 20 percent of their health insurance and there’s $600,000. That’s what the administration estimated it could save back in 2009 by closing Glencairn and Whitehills. Should Red Cedar be closed as part of a bond issue because now’s the time to “max out the debt?” It’s true that 7 mills approved in February would generate $62 million and only about $34 million three months later due to declining property values. But, it’s also true that the lower taxable value will generate a lot less annual revenue to service the debt. The shortfall could
exceed $3 million dollars a year in the early years. Not to worry though, the district can borrow that as well. It’s like using a credit card to pay the mortgage. But, what if the district needs to borrow more in five or six years? Do we have the right to limit the community’s future? Is closing Red Cedar the best insurance that Pinecrest, Whitehills,

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Triplett finds solutions for East Lansing In an era marked by sound-bite politics, East Lansing Councilmember Nathan Triplett stands apart. He takes time to understand the issues facing our city and to listen to the concerns we share with him. With that community input, he finds solutions that address both our short-term challenges as well as our long term goals. For instance, Nathan led the way on East Lansing’s Green Building Policy, which encourages economic development along with sustainable building practices. It is exactly this type of common sense approach that we need here in East Lansing, and it is why I will be voting for Nathan Triplett East Lansing City Council on Nov. 8. Kacie Kefgen, East Lansing

East Lansing senior quarterback, Alex Carlson, knew he had one last shot at Grand Ledge. The Trojans defeated the Comets 17-0 on Oct. 14. The CAAC Blue victory marked the first in the series for East Lansing since 2007. And it guaranteed a spot for the Trojans in the state high school football playoffs. “We’ve never beaten them,” Carlson said. “I’ve actually been playing them since fifth grade and we’ve never beaten them in football. To go out there and perform the way we did was really special.”
“It’s always been a blowout,” added senior Chris Hagan. East Lansing finally turned the tables on the Comets. Carlson completed 9-of-16 passes for 74 yards and threw two touchdowns for East Lansing (6-2, 4-2). Hagan scored a touchdown, kicked a field goal and added two extra points for the Trojans, who rebounded from a 50-28 loss to Sexton to hand the Comets (6-2, 4-2) their second straight loss after a 6-0 start. “To come back from 50 points and give up none, it was a big deal,” Hagan said. “It was huge. Swim crunch time arrives It’s crunch time for the Okemos and Haslett girl’s swimming and diving teams. At the time this paper went to press, Haslett and Okemos were both tied in the dual meet portion of the CAAC Blue. Haslett defeated Okemos two weeks ago, handing Okemos its first dual meet loss in 10 years. Okemos coach Patrick Saucedo formerly coached the Haslett Blue Marlins swim club before becoming the assistant coach of the Spartan swim club. “A lot of their girls, I’ve been coaching since they were in middle school,” he said. “ It was a bittersweet experience to see my girls that I don’t coach in high school swim well.
Okemos has won the ever, are hoping to grab league title for 10 straight their first-ever CAAC Blue years. The Vikings, how- title.

Daniel Coulter didn’t let the nerves of playing in his first district game get the best of him on Oct 18. Coulter scored East Lansing’s only goal as the Trojans downed Haslett 1-0 in the opening round of post-season play. The Trojans faced St. Johns in the district semifinal on Oct. 20, after this paper went to press. “It was pretty important to me,” Coulter said after the win over Haslett. “It’s my first year on varsity. We didn’t do as well as we wanted to but we kept a clean sheet and got the W. We just want to continue winning.”
The game marked the second meeting between Haslett and East Lansing, which tied earlier this season. Coulter’s goal came just 11 minutes into the game, and was set up by Grant Uecker, who sent a cross to Alex Lindsey near the left sideline. Lindsey found Coulter at the center goal line, who headed the ball high past Vikings keeper Josh Kleinow. “I knew he wasn’t going to get a shot off from there,” Coulter said. “I was just there and he got it to me right where he needed to so I could just head it in. Our main goal is always to get it in the very front to score.” East Lansing had several oppor-
COME
tunities to score again in the first and second half but didn’t connect. Uecker scored a goal 10 minutes into the second half that was taken back because of an offsides penalty. “We were able to possess the ball like we were hoping to,” Trojan’s coach Nick Archer said. “We knew that if we could posses the ball, we could create some more chances. Unfortunately, not enough went into the goal. We were fortunate to get that goal and hold on to it.” The Trojans kept the ball on their side of the field the majority of the game, giving the Vikings very little opportunity to score. “We’ve been practicing ball con-
trol all year,” Coulter said. “(Haslett) kinda just kicked it up and hoped someone would run onto it and then we just kept getting possessions off of that.” Andrew Jennings had six saves for the Trojans. Josh Kleinow did his part at holding the Trojans to just one goal with some notable saves in both halves. Kleinow finished with ten saves for the Vikings. “We could have made it a closer game,” Kleinow said. “The game was pretty even as far as defense. Both defenses had mistakes which led to goal scoring opportunities, but they put theirs away and we didn’t.”

Nichols beats high winds to win state title Kelsey Pence kpence@lsj.com
Heavy winds didn’t phase Okemos sophomore Elle Nichols. Nichols won the Division 2 state meet on Oct. 15 with rounds of 77 and 80 to finish on top with a final score of 157. East Lansing’s Kristyn Crippen was right behind her with a score of 158 and teammate Maggie Campbell came in at fourth with a 162. East Lansing finished in seventh place. “I was really proud of Kristyn,” Nichols said. “She was really able to finish with a strong round. I knew she was capable and she knew she wanted to finish strong. To have us get number one and number two was really great. We had a lot of fun and I’m so happy for her and Maggie.” Okemos coach Dan Stolz
and East Lansing coach Mary Jo Stacks both said the weather conditions made for a difficult tournament. “It was unbearable,” Stolz said. “There were 30-40 mile per hour winds at times and (Nichols) showed a great deal of maturity both days. She’s already a leader and will continue to be a terrific leader. “To have three of the top four places be our local girls really says something. Our local girls were really tough.” Stacks agreed. “It was like playing in a hurricane,” Stacks said. “The golf bags were literally falling over, that’s how strong the wind was. “I’m just proud of their commitment. They are very smart players. They played with poise and confidence they didn’t care about the wind.”
Doubles team wins state title
OKEMOS — Okemos’ Kyle Haak and Elan Dantus won the Division 2 state tennis championship at the No. 1 doubles flight on Oct 15. Okemos finished fifth as a team with 17 points. East Lansing finished
with seven points to tie for tenth place.Haak and Dantus defeated Birmingham Groves’ Calvin Greer and Alex Allen 6-0, 3-6, 7-6(5).Okemos’ No. 1 singles player Andy Struble made it to the semifinal round before losing.

The Wind Energy Conversion Systems Ordinance addresses zoning regulations to permit wind energy systems in Bath Township.
