‘57 Chevy tops

Wittrup named to Council Ken Palmer

Limner Press announces the winner of its first Art Car Award: Paul and Connie Ianchiou’s 1957 Chevy. The award is chosen by Wendy Shaft to be the best representation of creatively rethinking the look of a car as opposed to restoring it. The interior design of the car is of special interest because of its custom arm rests and tear drop details. The event took place during the June 3 Flamingo Fest/Cool Car Night event, a collaborative event by the Williamston Area Chamber of Commerce and the city of Williamston. COURTESY PHOTO

WILLIAMSTON — A former City Councilman with a long history of public service has been appointed to an open seat on the City Council. Larry Wittrup, who also has served on the city’s planning and parks and recreation boards, will serve the last five months of Tim Grossman’s unexpired term. With little comment, council members on June 13 voted 4-1 to appoint Wittrup, with Mayor Michelle Van Wert voting no and Councilman Andy Simmons absent. Former council members Sandra Whelton and Penny Griffin Davis also applied for the appointment, along with Matthew Best. Wittrup said he had no desire to run for a seat on the Council when the partial term expires on Nov. 30. His experience will allow him to step in and do the job, he said. Grossman accepted a job in Iowa late last year. His seat was declared vacant after he had several unexcused

abscences. Wittrup apparently will be on board in time to participate in a retreat approved by the Council in its June 13 meeeting. Van Wert proposed the idea as a way to ease some of the conflict that has characterized Council meetings over the past year. The mayor suggested the Council meet at a neutral site in Howell to work on teambuilding. In a 4-1 vote, the Council agreed to hold a meeting inside the city on its own time by the end of July. But Councilman John Pratt, who cast the lone no vote, indicated he won’t attend the meeting. Pratt said before the vote that he wouldn’t attend a retreat if city staff weren’t invited. “If it passes, you will not see me there,” he said. The Council majority agreed that only elected officials will attend the retreat, with city staff brought in for subsequent meetings.

Area school districts face financial challenges Williamston staff positions to be cut Ken Palmer

WILLIAMSTON — The school board is expected to vote June 20 on a 2011-12 budget that cuts five teaching spots and nine support staff to cope with rising costs and falling state revenue. District officials said they’ve trimmed about $1 million in costs and were looking for another $800,000 in concessions. It’s the first time since the

early 1990s that the district has had to lay off teachers to balance “I think the board has done an outstanding job its budget, Superintendent Narda of protecting classroom programming as well Murphy said. Across the state

School districts across the state are facing major shortfalls because of state aid cuts and rising retirement and health care costs. The Legislature cut per-pupil funding by $170 for the current year and approved an additional cut of $300 for 2011-12. School districts can recoup up to $100 per student to cover See SCHOOLS, Page 2

rising retirement costs and another $100 per student if they meet certain financial management criteria. Williamston officials said they expect the district will qualify for the “best-practices” stipend. The district will cut five teaching positions and nine support positions ranging from secretaries to paraprofessionals. One of the teaching spots is a contract position, officials said. In addition, three teachers at the middle school will be reduced from full-time to part-time, they said. The impact of the cuts will be felt throughout the district, Murphy said. The restructuring means that some teachers have been reassigned away from areas they’ve worked hard to develop, she said. The restructuring includes switching from trimesters to semesters.

PONTIAC — Williamston’s bid for a third consecutive appearance in the state title game came up a few games short. Detroit Country Day was just a bit too strong for the Hornets in a 2-0 Division 3 regional final loss at Pontiac Notre Dame Prep on June 10. Williamston coach Jim Flore said that his team was simply out-muscled. “They really played a better game than we did,” Flore said. “They’re physical, they attack hard and we couldn’t stay with that pace. I think they have a good chance (to win the state title).” The Yellowjackets controlled the game from the start, creating their first scoring chance directly from the opening kickoff, a 3-on-2 break that ended with a cross that was just inches too far ahead of an open forward at the penalty spot. The Hornets got a bit lucky when a Country Day free kick from the left wing was nearly knocked in, but was cleared off the line by Williamston’s

Samantha Wright. The Hornets nearly scored the first goal when forward Lisa Vogel came all the way back to the midfield stripe and stole the ball and sent a perfect ball to Abby Punch flying down the right wing. Vogel hustled back up top, collected Punch’s cross at the penalty spot, but put the open shot just over the crossbar. Wright saved the Hornets again after a Country Day corner kick with about 11 minutes left in the first half, clearing an open header off the line to keep the game scoreless. Country Day finally broke through with 2:44 left in the half, when a longlooping shot from about 40 yards out on the left wing forced Williamston keeper Caitlyn Clem to leap backward to turn it onto the crossbar. Michelle Manning was there for Country Day to head the rebound home and make the score 1-0. Williamston nearly tied the score about 18 minutes into the second half, when Vogel collected the ball at the top of the Country Day box, and sent Gabby Garza in on goal on the left

wing. Garza’s shot forced a diving save by Yellowjacket keeper Rachel Bergman at the near post. Country Day doubled its lead two minutes later on a free kick from about 30 yards out on the left wing. Maggie Keiffer’s cross was headed in at the far post by Alleina Szydlowski with 20:07 left to play. What was a very physical game started to get chippy toward the end, with three yellow cards issued in the final five minutes, as Country Day ran out with the tough win. “I think they’re more skillful,” said Yellowjacket coach Bob Bukari. “We came out and had to defend like crazy, and we defended all over the field. My girls just fought and fought and fought.” The loss marked the end of the high school careers of the Hornets’ 11 seniors, a class that Flore said was a special one. “It’s the most accomplished senior class that I’ve ever had,” he said. “They’ve won four district titles, some of the seniors have been to two state finals and I’m very proud of them.”

BERRY FARM through, but they didn’t.” Ironically, the Hornets swept Portland in a double header the week before, giving Williamston a 9-1 league record and first place in the CAAC White. “It came down to which team made the last play, and we were fortunate enough to make it,” Portland coach John Davids said. “That’s a testament to our kids. They

could have given in after they tied the game…These kids came back and jumped on the ball. They hit the heck out of it.” The Hornets were senior-heavy this season, losing eight to graduation. This year’s senior class included N. Jump, Austin, Ryan Stanton, Monette, Watters, Mike Gross, Aaron Cline and Schultz.

GRAND RAPIDS — The Williamston baseball squad rallied in the sixth and seventh innings, scoring five runs to tie Portland at 9-9 in regional semifinals at Grand Rapids’ Calvin College on June 11. But Portland came back to score five in the top of the eighth inning to take a 14-13 win. Portland then lost 17-7 to Grand Rapids Christian in the regional final. Williamston senior Dylan Monette took the loss against the Raiders. He came on in relief in the second inning. Monette blasted a solo homerun in the fifth inning that cleared the left centerfield fence at about 380 feet. Trailing by two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, Corbin Austin singled to left, followed by a single by Isaak Jump. Thomas Barrett singled to load the bases. With two outs, Monette and Tyler Watters each had RBI on walks to tie the score at nine. Portland refused give up,

scoring five runs in the top of the eighth inning. The big blast came on a triple by Dylan Carroll and a double by Andrew Click. But Williamston too refused to go down without a fight. Austin started the bottom of the eighth with a single to left. I. Jump singled to center and Barrett singled to drive in Austin. After a pitching change by Portland, I. Jump and Barrett advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. With two outs, Dylan Schultz tripled to center to drive in I. Jump. Barrett scored when Monette blasted a shot down the first-base line that took a bad hop, allowing Monette to alertly take second, putting the tying run in scoring position. A deep fly to centerfield by Watters ended the rally one-run short. “It was tough. That’s the only way to put it. It was tough,” Williamston coach Brad VanSickler said. “We hit the ball hard, but we hit it right at them. In the seventh inning we had a couple of hard-hit grounders that I thought were going to get

The Williamston Sunrise Rotary is in full duck mode as we prepare to launch another large family of little yellow Rotary ducks into the river for the anticipated race on Saturday, June 25 after the parade. Be sure to sponsor some of these racing ducks as they have been training to win the $1,000 cash prize, $500 cash prizes and more. You cannot win if you don’t have a duck, so be sure to stop and see a local Rotarian at D&W as you stop in for your favorite foods and leave with a few ducks too. There will be ducks for sponsor up to race day, so you will still have your chance to get in the flock. Hornets defeated in regional softball semifinal Bill McLeod

| bmcleod@lsj.com

GRAND RAPIDS — The Williamston softball team came up short against Eaton Rapids, losing to the Greyhounds 8-2 in the regional semifinal on June 11 at Grand Rapids’ Calvin College. The two teams have a history of meeting in regionals. Last year Williamston came out on top, beating the Greyhounds 3-2 in the regional final. But this year the Greyhounds held the upper hand, scoring five runs in the

second inning to take a 6-0 lead. Williamston bounced back to score twice in the third inning, but would get no closer to the Hounds. “The only thing I was disappointed with was that we didn’t play our best defense. We made way too many errors,” Williamston coach Steve Vander Laan said. “I thought we swung the bat pretty well and our pitcher kept us in the game.” Vander Laan was pleased with pitcher Kolette Schrier’s performance. “We pitched around (Erin) Binkowski and

STEVE VANDER LAAN Williamston coach (Bailey) Baker pretty well. They didn’t have any extra-base hits on us,” he said about the top Greyhoud power hitters. “She’s (Schrier) only 14 years old so she’s a young freshman, and to come into this kind of atmosphere and do that well against that good of a team shows me a lot. “That’s typical of our

whole team. We could have folded when we were down 6-0 in the second inning, but they just kept battling. I am really proud of them.” The Hornets lose four seniors: Felicia ThelenHolmes, Adele Burke, Deirdre Musser and Michaela Marble. Marble is a fouryear varsity player and holds the school record for

The City of Williamston provides your drinking water and is pleased to present you with this annual water quality report for the calendar year 2010. This report follows the guidelines set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment (MDNRE). Our goal is to provide you with a safe and dependable water supply. This report will illustrate that we are achieving this goal. SOURCE WATER ASSESSMENT PROGRAM The MDEQ performed an assessment of our source water in 2003 to determine susceptibility or the relative potential of contamination. The susceptibility rating is on a seven-tiered scale from “very low” to “very high” based primarily on geologic sensitivity, water chemistry and contaminant sources. The average susceptibility rating of our source wells is “moderate.” If you would like to know more about the report, please contact City Hall. ARSENIC RULES REVISED Arsenic is a contaminant that enters water supplies through the erosion of natural deposits, orchard runoff, and glass and electronics production wastes. The State of Michigan has revised the maximum level allowed for arsenic from 50 parts per billion to 10 parts per billion (ppb), effective January 2006. The City of Williamston’s water supply was tested for arsenic during 2010 and the concentration was 3 ppb, well below the new standard of 10 ppb. No additional treatment or action will be necessary for the City of Williamston to remain in compliance with the new arsenic rules. OUR DRINKING WATER Your drinking water comes from 6 groundwater wells. Filtration through the soil helps keep the water clean. Sodium hypochlorite is added for disinfection and polyphosphate is added to help control corrosion. Water is tested on a weekly basis for bacteria.

CITY OF WILLIAMSTON 2010 ANNUAL WATER QUALITY REPORT INFORMATION FOR PEOPLE WITH SPECIAL HEALTH CONCERNS:

CITY OF WILLIAMSTON WATER QUALITY TEST RESULTS FOR 2010

Some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in drinking water than the general population. Immuno-compromised persons, such as persons undergoing chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune system disorders, some elderly and infants can be particularly at risk from infections. These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers. Federal guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the risk of infection by cryptosporidium and other microbiological contaminants are also available from the EPA’s Drinking Water Hotline 800-426-4791.

The table below lists all the drinking water contaminants that were detected during the 2010 calendar year. The presence of these contaminants in the water does not necessarily indicate that the water poses a health risk. Unless otherwise noted, the data presented in this table is from testing done January 1 – December 31, 2010. The State allows us to monitor for certain contaminants less than once per year because the concentrations of these contaminants are not expected to vary significantly from year to year. All of the data is representative of the water quality, but some are more than one year old.

DEFINITIONS Parts per million (ppm) and parts per billion (ppb) – One ppm can be equated to 4 teaspoons of salt in a standard 24-foot backyard pool. One ppb is one teaspoon of salt in an Olympic-sized pool. Picocuries per liter (pCi/L) – a measure of radioactivity in water. Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) – The MCL is the highest level of a contaminant that is allowed in the drinking water. MCLs are set as close to the MCLGs as feasible, using the best available treatment technology. MCLs are set at very stringent levels by the State and Federal government. To understand the possible health effects, a person would have to drink about two liters (quarts) of water every day at the MCL level for a lifetime to have a one-in-a-million chance of having the associated health effect. Maximum Contaminant Level Goal (MCLG) – The MCLG is the level of a contaminant in drinking water below which there is no known or expected health risk. MCLGs provide for a margin of safety. Maximum Residual Disinfectant Level (MRDL) – The MRDL means the highest level of a disinfectant allowed in drinking water. There is convincing evidence that addition of a disinfectant is necessary for control of microbial contaminants. Maximum Residual Disinfectant Level Goal (MRDLG) - means the level of a drinking water disinfectant below which there is no known or expected risk to health. MRDLGs do not reflect the benefits of the use of disinfectants to control microbial contaminants.

The finished drinking water is pumped to the distribution system and to an above ground storage tank for use during peak demands. The distribution system is flushed three times per year to remove deposits from the water mains. This improves the taste of the water Action Level (AL) – The concentration of a contaminant which, if exceeded, triggers and helps prevent a cloudy appearance. treatment or other required actions a water system must follow. HEALTH AND SAFETY INFORMATION Drinking water, including bottled water, may be reasonably expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of these contaminants does not necessarily pose a health risk. The sources of both tap and bottled drinking water include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs and wells. As water travels over the surface of land or through the ground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive materials, and can also pick up substances resulting from animal or human activity. Contaminants that may be present in source water include: • Microbial contaminants, such as viruses and bacteria, which may come from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural livestock operations and wildlife. • Inorganic contaminants, such as salts and metals, which can be naturally occurring, or resulting from urban storm water runoff and residential uses. • Pesticides and herbicides, which may come from a variety of sources such as agricultural and residential uses. • Organic chemical contaminants, including synthetic and volatile organic chemicals, which are by-products of industrial processes and petroleum production, and can also come from gas stations, septic systems, and urban or agricultural runoff (i.e. pesticides and herbicides). • Radioactive contaminants, which can be naturally occurring or the result of oil and gas production and mining activities. To ensure that tap water is safe, the EPA prescribes regulations which limit the amount of certain contaminants in water provided by public water systems. The Food and Drug Administration is in the process of establishing limits for contaminants in bottled water, which must provide the same protection for public health.

Monitoring and Reporting Requirements: The State and EPA require us to test our water on a regular basis to ensure safety. nd – not detectable at testing limit. We will update this report annually and will keep you informed of any problems that may occur throughout the year, as they happen. Copies are available at City Hall, 161 E. Grand River Ave. This report will not be sent to you unless requested Monitoring and Reporting Requirements: The State and EPA require us to test our water on a regular basis to ensure safety.

Unregulated contaminants are those for which EPA has not established drinking water standards. Monitoring helps EPA to determine where certain contaminants occur and whether it needs to regulate those contaminants. MCLGs were not established before the 1986 Amendments to the Safe Drinking Water Act. Therefore, there is no MCLG for this contaminant.
