Enduro races keep growing in popularity

Grand parade

In keeping with the theme for the 2011 Red Cedar Jubilee, local children were all decked out in red, white and blue as they prepared to ride in the Grand Parade June 25. The kids rode in the Grand Parade because scattered thunderstorms forced organizers to cancel the Kid’s Day Parade June 22. This year’s Jubilee honored local police, fire and EMS personnel. Deckled Edge art show on at Gracie’s Place

WILLIAMSTON – The Deckled Edge is a group of dedicated artists who have met regularly at St. Katherine’s Episcopal Church in Williamston for several years. Their numbers include accomplished watercolorists, photographers and artists who work in other media. The group will be featured at the July art show at Gracie’s Place. Visitors to this show can expect a range of styles and subject matter, but always a passion for expression and the joy of creation. “We are very happy to welcome The Deckled Edge to this space usually occupied by members of Second Monday Art-

ists,” said Second Monday spokesperson Anita Saviko. “Many local artists are members of both groups and both groups share an open approach to art. The artists take their work very seriously. They take themselves a little less seriously and enjoy a chance to work and exhibit their art together.” The public is invited to meet the artists at a reception Saturday afternoon, July 9, from 2-4 p.m. The exhibit is open for viewing during business hours until July 27. Gracie’s Place is located at 151 S. Putman in Williamston.

osh and Brandon Fulton’s Oldsmobile 88 doesn’t look much like it did when it rolled off the assembly line in 1999. But don’t let its dented front fender, caved-in trunk and red, green and white paint scheme fool you, the Fultons said. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. “It’s pretty nice now, too,” said Josh, 21. These days, the Olds competes on makeshift tracks at community festivals and county fairs, bumping and grinding against other front-drive vehicles in a world known as Enduro racing. Brandon Fulton ran the Olds at the Red Cedar Jubilee Enduro races on June 24 in Deer Creek Park. His cousin, Josh, drove a blacker-than-black 1994 Dodge Shadow. “It’s kind of like gokarts with real vehicles,” said Tommy Pratt, who has organized the Enduro event since it was added to the Jubilee schedule three years ago. “It kind of takes the place of demolition derby.” Once a mainstay of the Jubilee, the traditional demolition derby is fading away because the rear-

Brandon Fulton, with a stripped-down 2000 Oldsmoble 88 he drove in the Red Cedar Jubilee Enduro event on June 25. Ken Palmer / LCN drive vehicles used for it are getting harder to find, Pratt said. Enduro races feature stripped-down, front-drive cars and minivans that often collide with each other as they circle the track. For safety purposes, steel bars are mounted across the center of the windshield opening, and hoods and doors must be chained, wired or welded shut. About 30 cars were entered in the Jubilee event, competing in 15-lap heats on a track ringed with cement pilons and sewer pipes. The event has been a hit

at Jubilee, drawing several hundred spectators over the past two years. Cousins Josh and Brandon Fulton are following a family tradition, of sorts. Their fathers, Cliff and Flint, used to run cars in the demolition derby, which dates to 1972 in Williamston. Their cars were sponsored by their aunt, Wheatfield Inn owner Lorie Fulton, who used to run in the derby. Brandon’s mother, Tammy, was the announcer. And Lorie Fulton’s father, Wayne Fulton, did the inspections. Josh Fulton, who won See RACES, Page 3

WILLIAMSTON – During his two decades in the retail business, Mike Crittendon has managed drugs stores in various locales and even a grocery store in Florida. Now, he’s managing a business in his hometown. “I’m seeing people I went to school with and people I’ve known for years,” said Crittendon, who grew up in Williamston and attended high school there. “I’ve been out of Williamston for quite awhile, so coming back here again is rather exciting. It’s always nice to come home, isn’t it?” Crittendon is managing the new PS Food Mart, which opened about two months ago at the site of a former gas station at 420 E. Grand River Ave. The PS Food Mart chain, operated by Homer-based Folk Oil Co., includes 31 stores in south-central Michigan and northwest Ohio. The stores are among

6,000 locally owned Citgo stations in the U.S. “We’re a local company that employs all local people,” said Jim Linton, vice president of the PS chain. The Williamston store employs five people, including Crittendon. Besides gasoline and diesel fuel, the store sells beer and wine, Java Peak Coffee, fountain drinks and a variety of food products. Linton said the PS chain has a history of supporting local charities. Citgo is the largest corporate supporter of the Muscular Dystrophy Association and helps families across the country, it said. The Williamston store will participate in fundraising for the Williamston Food Bank and other local charities, Linton and Crittendon said. Crittendon, who lives in Lansing, said he managed

stores for the Rite Aid and CVS drug store chains before signing on with PS. “I know the importance of value and quality and giving back. Those are the principles we will follow at this new PS Food Mart CITGO location.” Construction work on E. Grand River, east of the city, created some challenges, Crittendon said. The road was completely closed for a time, with traffic detoured onto S. Putnam Street. “Since they opened it back up on Tuesday, it’s been a little bit better,” he said. “Now, people come through here.”
