When Mr. B’s Joybox Express hits the road for a tour, they leave the van at home, climb onto bicycles and pedal their gear from stop to stop. The Ann-Arbor-based group played a free concert at the American Legion Band Shell in McCormick Park July 8 as part of a two-week barnstorming tour across south-central Michigan. The tour started in Holland and included stops in the Grand Rapids and Lansing areas, including Williamston and Howell, en route to the Detroit area. Band leader Mark Braun hauls around a 350-pound piano on a customized tricycle that can be rigged with two pusher bikes. The string bass and other gear are hauled on separate bicycle trailers. The boogie woogie group helps raise money to support children’s causes, including arts and athletics. The Williamton perfomance was sponored by the Williamston Theatre and benefitted the Safe Routes to School initiative. KEN PALMER/LCN
Recall effort begins kpalmer@lsj.com
WILLIAMSTON - Williamston may be headed for a recall campaign. Resident Kent Hall filed recall petition language July 13 against Mayor Michelle Van Wert, two days after asking her to resign during a City Coun-
cil meeting. Hall said Van Wert has wasted the city’s time and money and has personally attacked City Manager Tim Allard. “I’ve always thought recall elections were horrible, but in this case it is necessary,” Hall told the City Council on July 11. Van Wert said she hasn’t

done anything wrong and suggested the recall attempt is tied to recent conflicts between her and other councilmembers and members of the city staff. “I have stated my commitment to accountability and transparency,” she said. “There’s no question that See RECALL, Page 2

he never held elective office. But no one was more interested or involved in local affairs than Betty Honey. In fact, anyone who served on the City Council, county Board of Commissioners or other public body was likely to hear from the fiesty Honey, and probably often. “She was one of a kind,” said Ted Thompson, a former high school band teacher who knew Honey well. “She was extremely involved in the community and politics at every level. She was just very interested in everything that was going on.” Honey died June 10 at her Williamston home. She was 88. A memorial service is planned for sometime in August, the family said. Honey grew up in Detroit but moved to Williamston in 1960 with her husband, Keith, who taught urban planning at Michigan State University before retiring in 1986. “Mom absolutely loved Williamston,” said her son, Charles Honey. “She loved the Memorial Day Parade. She loved the Jubilee. She loved the life of a little small town.” A mother and homemaker, Betty Honey was active in politics at all levels, campaigning against the Vietnam War and advoacting reforms to improve elder care, Charles Honey said. She was involved with the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, he said. Honey also kept close tabs on local politics. “It was always interesting to talk with her because she always knew what was going on,” said Tom Mitchell, who owns Barrett’s Store for Men and Boys. “She always kept me in line when she thought I did something wrong, but it was always for my own good. But she’d praise you, too, if she thought you did good.”
Honey tried to make life better for other people, especially senior citizens, Mitchell said. “She’ll by missed,” he said. Mayor Michelle Van Wert said Honey was straightforward and steadfast in her beliefs. “She just told it the way it was,” Van Wert said. “Everything she did was very genuine and sincere. In government and politics, it’s a good day when you find someone who can share a thought or idea and be genuinely sincere.” Honey had a large collection of antique dolls and ran Betty Honey a doll shop in downtown Williamston for about a decade. She was interested in historical preservation and worked on behalf of the Williamston Depot Museum and the veteran’s memorial at McCormick Park, family members said. Besides her husband, Honey is survived by her three children. Charles is a journalist who lives Grand Rapids. Michael, of Tacoma, Wa., is a professor at the University of Washington. Maureen Honey, of Lincoln, Neb., is a professor at the University of Nebraska. Charles Honey said his mother, who suffered from congestive heart problems, died in her bedroom overlooking her garden. “Mom loved her family more than anything else,” he said. “We were so grateful to be with her this past week and at the time of her passing.”

with that comes some tension. There’s a price to be paid for that, and sometimes, it’s uncomfortable.” The Ingham County Election Commission will review Hall’s proposed petition language in a clarity hearing on July 28, said Janie Hall, the county’s election supervisor. If the language is approved, Hall would have 180 days to collect enough signatures to force a recall election. He would need 361 valid signatures, or 25 percent of the residents who voted in the city’s 2010 general election for governor. That means an election wouldn’t happen until February or later. Hall, who moved to Williamston nearly two years ago and sits on the city’s Planning Commission, said he has no political ax to grind, no political aspirations and nothing to lose by mounting the recall effort. His proposed petition language claims Van Wert has caused extra work and stress for city staff, excessive legal costs for the city and lengthy meetings “that are often out of control.” Allard and other city staff will leave if she isn’t recalled, he said. “The city is so much better than this,’ he said. “We just don’t need it.” Van Wert is serving her second term on City Council and has been mayor for four years. In recent months, she’s often been at odds with Allard and other council members. Van Wert said she’s no more responsible for the strife or the city’s escalating legal bills than the rest of the council. “I’m proud of the work I’ve accomplished in the last six years,” she said. “The city checkbook is now online, the budget is now posted online and we have more public hearings. I’m not going to back down. At the end of the day, I’m elected by the people.”

Riverfront Festival cancelled Residents invited Ken Palmer
| kpalmer@lsj.com
City leaders have decided to cancel a fine arts festival planned for next month in McCormick Park because vendors haven’t showed much interest. The Riverfront Festival of Arts was conceived as new spin on the defunct ArtFest on the River, which once drew up to 80 vendors and thousands of vistors to the park in July. “On the surface, it seemed like a good idea,” City Manager Tim Allard WILLIAMSTON
-
told the City Council on July 11. “(But) we’ve just not had the type of response to make for a successful event.” A steering committee chaired by local businessman Brooke Locke had been working to find sponsors and sign up vendors since late last year, when the Council okayed $5,000 in seed money for a two-day event. As of early July, no sponsorship payments had come in and only 16 vendors had signed up to sell their wares, all but three of whom are
jewelers, city officials said. It doesn’t help that Locke is suffering from serious health problems, officials said. The Council agreed to cancel the event for this year but might consider going ahead with the entertainment part of the festival. “There has been significant interest in this component, and there are certainly enough acts to fill the stage,” city planner Greg Milliken said in a memo to the Council. “The only problem is that most of the perform-
ers require payment.” Without enough vendors and sponsorships, the city would have to cover much of the cost, he said. ArtFest was founded in 2001 as a way to showcase local artists and grew to become a premier event in the city. It ceased after 2007, reportedly because of volunteer and financial problems. The Riverfront Festival of Arts was scheduled for Aug. 6-7 and was intended to coincide with the Chamber of Commerce’s annual Dog Days of Summer event.

e get questions from people who LIBRARY are looking for COLUMN online, searchable cemetery information. Michele Some of the most useful Brussow sites we recommend include findagrave.com, interment.net, daddezio.com cemetery transcriptions and arlingtoncemetery.mil. for use by genealogists These free sites publish and local historians. The
COME
online libraries assist folks in finding burials of their family and friends as well as providing information on family history. Some of the transcripts are a preservation basis only. Did you see the summer edition of My Williamston magazine? Demand for the titles I
reviewed has been strong. If you are interested in reading one but don’t see it in the library, ask a staff member to help you place a hold. We’ll let you know when a copy is available. Wednesday, July 20 at 10:30 a.m., Magician Ming Louie will be here, helping us visit the exotic world of
China’s Middle Kingdom in magic, story, and song. Finally, CADL’s partnership with Park and Read, an initiative sponsored by the Michigan DNR and Library of Michigan, is underway. Cardholders are able to “check out” a oneday park pass that’s good at any of the 98 Michigan
State Parks and Recreation Areas. While the pass can be borrowed for up to seven days, it is valid for just one day. The Williamston Library is closed on Sundays during the summer. — Michele Brussow is the head librarian at Williamston Library

3.Adopt by majority vote a resolution to place before the electorate at the next regular or special township election the question of incorporation as a charter township. If Option 2 is adopted by the township board, the citizens of the township have the right to file a "Right to Referendum Petition." This petition must be filed before the final adoption of the resolution to incorporate as a charter township. The petition must follow, in general form, the nominating petition form as prescribed in the Michigan Election Law (MCL 168.488), and the heading must indicate "Disagreement of Intent to Incorporate as a Charter Township." The petition must be signed by not less than 10% of the number of electors of the township voting for township supervisor at the last election in which a supervisor was elected. If the petition is successful, the question of incorporation will be placed on the ballot at the next general or special township election. Ernie Gaffner, Williamstown Township Clerk 4990 N.
