rowing up in New Boston, close to Detroit Metro Airport, Tony Caselli recalls drifting off to sleep to the sound of Ernie Harwell’s voice calling a Detroit Tigers game. Two months into the run of “Ernie: The Play” at Detroit’s City Theatre, the artistic director of the Williamston Theatre is still marveling at the chance he’s been given to help celebrate an icon of baseball. “It’s nice to know I’ve had a hand in honoring Ernie Harwell, and in such a way that people are moved by it,” Caselli, the play’s director, said. “(‘Ernie’) captures baseball — the heart of it, the nostalgia of it and the magic of it.” “Ernie: The Play”, written by longtime Free Press columnist Mitch Albom, is dedicated to the legendary broadcaster who was the “Voice of Summer” for Tigers fans from 1960 until his retirement in 2002. Harwell died in May 2010 at age 92. The play opened April 28 and was to have closed in late June, but high demand pushed the must-close date to Sunday, Aug. 21. The two-character story stars Will David Young as Harwell and T.J. Corbett as “Boy.” Young often makes viewers forget the real Harwell has passed on, while Corbett is the embodiment of everyone who has ever pressed their ear to a radio or stretched out a glove in hopes of a foul ball.
Tony Caselli, director of the Williamston Theatre, is directing “Ernie: The Play” at the City Theatre in Detroit. Written by Detroit Free Press columnist Mitch Albom, “Ernie” is a fond look at the life of legendary Detroit Tigers and Hall of Fame broadcaster Ernie Harwell. The play stars Will Young as Harwell and T.J. Corbett as The Boy. COURTESY PHOTO The setting is September 2009 in a tunnel beneath Comerica Park, where Harwell is waiting to go out and make a farewell speech to a packed ballpark. During a rain delay, a mysterious young man coaxes Harwell into recounting his life’s highlights, both professional and personal. Longtime Tigers fans will find many laughs in “Ernie”, and should also be prepared with tissues. Caselli has been active in Michigan theater for nearly 20 years, including a lengthy stint at the Purple Rose Theatre in Chelsea. His experience — plus his lifelong love of baseball — made Caselli the ideal candidate. “(Mitch) wanted this to be a very Michigan project, and he wanted to find someone who was a good fit for the project,” Caselli recalled.
IF YOU GO Tickets, at $25 and $20, are available at the theater, located at 2301 Woodward Ave. in Detroit, or at www.ticketmaster.com.
Tigers jacket The two men got together, discussed the script and toured the theater, and Albom eventually asked Caselli if he would direct the play. The lifelong Tigers fan, who first went to a game with his father and grandfather, readily agreed. “I have my grandfather’s Tigers jacket. I still wear it when it’s chilly, and especially if there is a game,” Caselli said. Preparation for the production See ERNIE, Page 4
WILLIAMSTON - The Ingham County Election Commission will decide on Aug. 1 if a city resident can take the next step in a recall campaign against Mayor Michelle Van Wert. Recall campaigns are suddenly in vogue in Ingham County, where seven local officials and two members of the state Legislature are being targeted. Residents in Onondaga Township are collecting signatures to recall three township board members in connection with a proposed drag strip. The Election Commission recently rejected recall petition language against three Vevay Township offi-
cials. And on the same day as the Williamston clarity hearing, the commission will review recall petition language filed by a Holt man against state Sen. Gretchen Whitmer and state Rep. Barb Byrum, county officials said. Mayor The clarity Van Wert hearing i the recall effort against Mayor Van Wert, set for 2 p.m. in Ingham Probate Judge R. George Economy’s courtroom, will determine whether Kent Hall’s petition language is clear enough for voters to understand. If the language is See RECALL, Page 4

Impression 5 L.A.B.s starts on Monday All summer long, kids have been beating the heat with science fun during Impression 5’s Summer L.A.B.S. camps. Monday, July 25, kicks off a new week of exploration. Kids will be letting out “ewwws” and “ahhhs” during Gross Science as they investigate wounds, plaque and other disgust-

Kids will be venturing to the silver screen during Movie Making as they learn about shadows, sound effects and more while they work to complete their very own films. Is it fact or fiction? Students will be pondering this question all week during Advanced Myth Busters as they experiment to finally get the answers to science’s most mythical questions (ages 9 to 12). Camp begins each day at 9 a.m. and runs until 4 p.m., but students can be dropped off as early as 8 a.m. and picked up as late as 5:30 p.m. For younger students (ages 3-5), half-day camps run from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. (with drop-off starting at 8 a.m. and pick-up at 12:30 p.m.), and from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. (with drop-off starting at 1:30 p.m. and pick-up at 5:30 p.m.).

A show that featured those special friendships seemed like a natural. It fits in, as well, with Williamston’s August Dog Days celebration. The Saturday reception is an especially nice time for folks to stop in, see the artwork and even talk with some of the artists over some warm cookies and other refreshments.” While the show will also include works depicting farm scenes, the main focus is on horses and hounds. Participants include renown area artists including Sharon Rowe, Gretchen Foster, Anita Saviko, Rebecca Case, Peggy Lovejoy, Juanita Baldwin, Karen Bartlett, Jeanne Van Wieren, Lee Kronenberg and others. The public is invited to meet the artists at a reception Saturday, Aug. 6, from 2 to 4 p.m. The exhibit is open for viewing during business hours from July 27 to Aug. 31. Dogs, horses to be featured in art exhibit WILLIAMSTON — Does it date back to that pre-historic campfire when the wolf puppy came to dinner and stayed to become humanity’s best friend? The first time an ancient man or woman climbed up on horseback and changed the world? Whenever it started, the bond between humans, dogs and horses has endured through millennia and it has been celebrated in art from the caves of Lescaux to the present. The members of Second Monday Artists group and other area painters, photographers, etc. are sharing their views of this happy friendship with The Dog and Pony Show on exhibit at Gracie’s Place in Williamston during August. “I knew so many riders who were also wonderful artists,” said Second Monday Artists spokesperson Jeanne Van Wieren. “And so many of my friends who are artists have done wonderful portraits of dogs they have known and loved.

’m sure you’ve seen or heard on the news lately, all the horrific stories of animal abuse, starvation, and neglect. The Ingham County Animal Shelter deals firsthand with these cases and so many more that do not make the headlines. I have witnessed a shelter that has flourished under director McAloon. I’ve gotten to know her and found her to be a
shame in his big golden eyes. One of the shelter’s own staff, Katlyn Turner, looked past his condition, fostered the dog for 2 1/2 months and nursed him back to health. His change was so dramatic, I didn’t even recognize Winky sitting behind the counter when I came in. This is just one of the dogs that was given love and support and has gone on to become a member

Amazing help We had an amazing outpouring from people everywhere last year. There were so many donations we had to haul them to the shelter in our 30’ ft. camper! This accomplishment did not go unnoticed, as we received a Humanitarian Award for Community Involvement Project at the annual awards ceremony. I believe we can do even better this year! We will be collecting the following items: dog

We will once again be located next to Limner Press at 121 High St., in downtown Williamston between the hours of 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Aug. 4 and 5. TO RACE IN NATIONAL AMATEUR FINALS
9
HURRICANE MILLS, Tenn. — Webberville’s Hunter Rhodes just made his dream come true. The 10-year-old dirt bike racer has qualified for the largest amateur motocross race in the world, the 29th Annual AMA Amateur National Motocross Championships at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch. Rhodes took on over 20,000 hopefuls from across America to earn one of just 1,386 qualifying positions. “The Amateur Nationals at Loretta Lynn’s is the event every motocross racer in the country wants to compete in,” said Event Director Tim Cotter. “A win at the Amateur Nationals gives a rider instant national notoriety and can serve as a springboard to a lucrative professional motocross career.” Most of America’s top professional motocrossers, including James Stewart, Ricky Carmichael, Travis Pastrana and Jeremy McGrath, have won AMA Amateur
National Championships at Loretta Lynn’s. The race is so prestigious that last year, teenage stars Dean Wilson, from California, and Eli Tomac, from Colorado, were awarded premier professional contracts for the 2010 season. Rhodes, who attends Webberville Elementary, has been riding since he was 4-years-old. With the help of sponsors such as MCR, who help pay his/her way to the races, Rhodes has had the opportunity to pursue his/her dreams. Rhodes will make the long journey to Tennessee along with his family. The race runs Aug. 2-7. Rhodes is just one of the over 20,000 who spent the last four months qualifying for the event. The top finishers in area and regional qualifiers earn a birth into the National Championship race at Loretta Lynn’s. Racers may enter a wide variety of classes, from minicycle classes for children as young as four, all the
way up to a senior division for riders over 50. There are also classes for women and classes for both stock and modified bikes. The track is built on a section of Loretta Lynn’s Ranch and Campground in Hurricane Mills, Tenn. The course contains a variety of jumps, corners and other obstacles designed to test the skills and stamina of the racers. Most riders attend the event with the help of their families. In fact, many groups consider the event their family’s summer vacation. Besides races, the ranch provides family-friendly facilities including a game room, swimming pools, arts and crafts activities as well as a fashion and talent show.
