WILLIAMSTON - When Sue Dahlstrom signed on with Lansing dermatologist Dr. A.L. Messenger, John F. Kennedy was in the White House and Alan Shepherd had just become the first American to fly in space. It was June 1961. Dahlstrom was in high school, and her mother was a nurse who worked in the office. “I came in to fill in and kind of ended up staying,” said Dahlstrom, of Williamston. Kind of? More like “Totally.” In June, Dahlstrom celebrated her 50th anniversary at the medical office, where she is a surgical tech

for Messenger’s son, Dr. Gregory Messenger. “We didn’t have horseand-buggies; we did drive cars,” joked Dahlstrom, who has seen many changes in the medical field, nonetheless. “There weren’t many of the diseases you have now. We didn’t wear gloves for anything other than surgery. And hazardous waste was hardly ever thought of. “It was a lot more fun back then. You didn’t have to worry about as many things.” Dahlstrom still enjoys her job, covering 12-hour shifts five days a week, along with some half-day shifts on Saturdays. “Dr. Messenger says he sees her more than he sees his wife, and she
sees him more than she sees me,” said Dahlstrom’s husband, Howard. “I tell him that’s okay with me. It costs him more than it costs me.” Sue Dahlstrom started out doing referral letters and helping with patients and later received training as a surgical technician. She’s come to know many patients during her five decades in the office. “You get to know them and their families, and they know about our families,” she said. “It’s been my whole life. Someday, when I retire, I’ll miss the patients afterward.” As for retirement, Dahlstrom said she hasn’t seriously thought about it.

Wrangler, a standard poodle, visited Round Elementary School in Hartland. COURTESY PHOTO
Keep your eye open for the FBI dogs, coming to Williamston during Dog Days of Summer, on Friday, Aug. 5. This 501(c)3 organization trains assistance dogs for many uses, one of which is for schools. In these tough times, For Better Independence Assistance Dogs, would like to help local school by providing a facility/therapy dog. This dog can act as a school mascot while teaching kids life’s lessons. Feel free to talk to any of the handlers that are wearing an FBI bandana. For Better Independence Assistance Dogs, is a great matchmaker, finding the right canine for the right facility. For Better Independence, placed Easton, a black lab with Woodland Elementary in Indiana, and Wrangler, a standard poodle, with Round Elementary School in Hartland, Michigan. For more information, contact FBI Dogs at (517) 589-0477 or info@fbidogs.org. Donations may be made through PayPal at the website, www.fbidogs.org.

El Playita restaurant opens in Webberville Ken Palmer kpalmer@lsj.com
Eddie Benavides, owner of El Playita, in Webberville. Benavides moved to Michigan from his native Mexico about six years ago. KEN PALMER/LCN
WEBBERVILLE - Eddie Benavides came to Michigan from his native Mexico six months ago, looking for a fresh start in a better place. For now, at least, the 57-year-old businessman couldn’t be happier. “I feel good,” said Benavides, who opened El Playita, a Mexican restaurant at 104 E. Grand River Ave. on June 23. “The thing I like the most here in Michigan is the people. The people are very friendly. The first time I came to Webberville, I liked the small-town feel.
Webberville is a family town. This town is very friendly.” Benavides leased a 2,950-square-foot building that has housed a succession of restaurants over the past several years. The last tenant, Johnny’s Country Oven, operated for only a short time before closing several months ago. Benavides said he grew up on the Pacific Coast of Mexico and started his first business at age 17. Within six months, the clothing company had grown to include 86 employees, he said. He ran a restaurant in California for nine years before returning to Mexico,
where he owned a checkcashing business and an Internet cafe. He stayed in Mexico for nearly eight years before moving to Lansing to work for a friend. The drug cartels and corruption in Mexico, coupled with a poor economy, make it a tough place to live and do business, he said. “It’s so dangerous right now for any kind of business,” he said. “It’s just very, very bad for everybody.”
The new restaurant is named after his hometown in Mexico, Benavides said. The area where he grew up is known for its high-quality seafood, he said. El Playita offers a large variety of Mexican fare, along with traditional American food. The restaurant is open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week. The restaurant employs about two dozen people - all from the Webberville area, he said.

The incident occurred about 4 a.m. July 23, when Officer Donald Smith overheard an argument and traced the sounds to an address on W. Middle Street, police reports said. A Webberville woman, 26, was arguing with her 29-year-old boyfriend from Williamston about a bank card, the reports said. The man wanted her to leave, but the woman said she was too drunk to drive and didn’t want to leave her car because she feared he would damage it. Smith, who had to keep separating the couple, called for backup from Meridian Township police, the reports said. Smith gave the woman a ride home, and Meridian officers moved her car to the city police department. No one was arrested.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR We are deeply disappointed in the recent recall effort brought by Kent Hall against Mayor Michelle Van Wert. We are appreciative of her service to our community. We feel she has been instrumental in bringing a fair and balanced approach to the issues concerning our great community. Her record of requiring accountability of city employees is impressive. Her constant vigilance to transparency is equally impressive. Checks and balances of government power is of utmost importance to her, as is the wise stewardship of taxpayer money she exhibits with the decisions/ proposals she brings forth. She also displays a kind heart toward families in need in the community. It is a ridiculous waste of taxpayer funds to bring a malicious recall effort against the mayor. The good ‘ole boys club and their alliances, including their literal backroom dealings during city council meetings, seem to be the real push behind this effort. It is also a disgrace to see the obvious abuse and disre-
COME
spect shown toward the mayor. Finally, we feel it is partially a gender issue as well. If she were not a woman, this would be a non-issue. We whole-heartedly support Ms. Van Wert and hope others in the community will put their trust and respect behind her and the great job she is doing, and vehemently disapprove of the obvious gender bias and behind-thescenes deals.

WILLIAMSTON - Another graduation open house had ended a few weeks ago, and five friends since childhood popped in their football highlight video from the fall and started processing it all. Many around Williamston had projected plenty of promise and potential for Dylan Monette’s senior class well before they even entered high school. With high praise came high pressure. But with Monette often leading the way, the Hornets made good on every expectation. The football, boys basketball and baseball teams all won district championships. Football and basketball also won CAAC White titles. And Williamston finished its football season in the
school’s first state final for that sport. “I think we did more than we thought we could have, to be honest,” Monette said. “Everyone was talking about the hype for football, but I don’t think anyone knew us for anything. Basketball, they knew us a little bit. But baseball, I don’t think anyone really knew what we could do. “I think we lived up to everything that everyone put on top of us and all the pressure that we had.” And Monette, this year’s State Journal male athlete of the year, was a catalyst. He made the all-area Dream Team both as a football defensive back and baseball pitcher and third baseman, and he earned a Class B basketball all-area honorable mention as a shooting guard. In total, he spent at least part of 11 seasons on Wil-
liamston varsity teams. The football team was 27-10 with him and won its first playoff game ever in 2009, and the basketball team finished 20-3 this past winter with its first district title in seven seasons. With all his accomplishments added up, Monette ranks alongside former football star Brian Borgman and basketball standout Carter Briggs among the best the school has produced. “If he’s not the best, he’s one of the top three for sure,” said baseball coach Brad VanSickler, also a 2003 graduate of the school and one of Monette’s cousins. “He dealt with it great. He’s a great teammate. I’m sure he’d be the first to tell you that there are other people who deserved this award.” That core group of seniors - Monette, Jump, Dylan Schultz, Tyler Wat-
ters and Corbin Austin - all played football and baseball. All but Austin were on the basketball team. And all had played together since childhood, including a youth baseball World Series title. Then there was that basketball tournament in the middle of the Upper Peninsula - during which their fans filled the gym when they were only eighth graders. “Being best friends, we knew when to let someone be. And we knew when the pressure was starting to get to people,” Monette said. Roles changed depending on the sport, but Monette was an organizer, the kid who made sure everyone was at a practice or weight room session, the one always there to support his teammates and keep them loose when things started getting serious or
to claim a mistake when a younger player might have been in error. A 6-foot, 180-pound wide receiver and defensive back, Monette caught 19 touchdown passes in the fall and had six interceptions. His most significant play came in the regional final win over Marine City the Hornets trailed at that point, but he picked off a pass and ran it back for a score to spark the 30-20 victory. “Dylan Monette is obviously a very gifted athlete. His desire to be the difference-maker when the game was on the line was what made him special,” Williamston football coach Steve Kersten said. VanSickler said a key for the whole group was parents who kept them down to earth and humble, including Monette’s parents Dana and Robin.
Now Monette will move on to play at the next level.
