Kid cooks shine at Le Chat Gourmet Eight to vie for four council seats

he young chefs at Le Chat Gourmet’s Summer Cooking Camp in Eaton Rapids aren’t big on frozen pizza or mac and cheese from a box. Instead, they’re into creating their own recipes using fresh, simple ingredients, then cooking from scratch. On Aug. 5 three teams of young cooks were engaged in an Iron Chef competition on their last day of camp, with three judges ready to rate them on taste, originality, presentation and the cleanliness of their work area. Jessica Mohlman and Katie Hoffman of Mason teamed up with Amelia Arnold of East Lansing to create a cheesy chicken biscuit pizza flavored with tarragon and rosemary. All three girls, whose biscuits were made from scratch, are 9-years-old. Lansing resident Jonathan Riley, 13, Jackson Vukovic, 8, and 10-year-old Colton Flynn created a stuffed green pepper recipe featuring seasoned rice and smoked sausage.Riley goes to East Lansing’s McDonald Middle School amd Vukovic to St. Thomas Aquinas. Flynn was visiting from Warren. The third team, 11-year-old Connor McCornack from East Lansing, Alexis Hereza, 10, from Williamston and 13-year-old Michele Nussdorfer from Eaton Rapids, made a macaroni and cheese pie with a bacon strip crust woven like a lattice. Everyone made sure to use the child-pleasing “mystery ingredient” of the week: Colby-Jack cheese. Before the plates were presented to the judges, the young cooks headed for Le Chat Gourmet’s herb

WILLIAMSTON - Eight people will fight it out for four open seats on the Williamston City Council in the Nov. 8 election. Incumbents Scott VanAllsburg, Michael Moody and John Pratt will face off against five challengers, four of whom are running as a slate. One of the open seats is held by Councilman Larry Wittrup, who isn’t running for reelection. Besides the incumbents, Tina Brookhouse, John Haynes, Andrew Pavona, Ben Stiffler and Sandra Bowden-Whelton filed nominating petitions by the Aug. 16 deadline. Whelton said she, Brookhouse, Pavona and Stiffler are running as a team. “I just want to see if I can make a difference,” said Whelton, who chairs the annual Red Cedar Jubilee festival and served on the Çouncil in the late 1990s. “We just need to get back to where we were before. No more fighting. It’s just getting ridiculous.” Pratt said he expects a raucous campaign because the slate appears to be aligned with Mayor Michelle Van Wert, who has been at odds with the three incumbents over many issues in recent months. “This will be a nasty

election campaign, and I will campaign that much harder,” Pratt said. “I’m not sitting on the sidelines, waiting to see what happens.” The three top vote-getters on Nov. 8 will serve four-year terms, with a twoyear term going to the fourth-highest vote-getter. Van Allsburg has been on the Council since 2004, while Moody and Pratt joined the board in 2008. Stiffler, whose family owns a restaurant in town, and Brookhouse, who owns a fitness studio, have publicly defended Van Wert. So has Whelton, who says she has no agenda and will vote her conscience if she’s elected in November. “I’ll listen to everybody, and I’m sure people will get mad at me,” she said. “They are all good people on the Council. I just don’t know where they’re coming from any more.” Pavona could not be reached by the Enterprise, and Haynes was unavailable for comment as the newspaper went to press. Pratt said he’s not sure what issues will arise during the campaign because the city has “done so many positive things” over the past two years. “I feel bad that such a great community is going to have to deal with this again,” he said.

NEWS IN BRIEF

So how is your summer reading list going so far? Have you checked off all those books you were looking forward to? If so, I applaud you — I know I certainly didn’t! On the other hand, I was able to fit in an interesting array of titles over the past few months. A few were the old standby releases I never miss, such as the newest Southern Vampire series installment “Dead Reckoning” by Charlaine Harris (you know, the Sookie Stackhouse/ True Blood books) and the latest Stephanie Plum mystery, “Smokin’ Seventeen” by Janet Evanovich. These always make for a fun, quick read. I also initiated my new eReader, a LIBRARY Barnes & Noble Nook Color, with my first COLUMN eBook, “The Game of Thrones” by George R.R. Martin. Having caught the beginning of the series on HBO, I was dying to find out what was going to happen in this epic fantasy saga. Because it’s the first in the Song of Ice and Fire series, with five books out and two more planned, I’m certain to have great reading material for a long time to come. Julie Though I lean toward fiction, I always Chrisinske try to sample some of the new biographies that are constantly coming out. This summer it was Betty White’s latest, “If You Ask Me,” and “Working It Out” by Abby Rike. They were both great, quick-read books, with Betty White dishing out humor, history and wisdom while Abby Rike shared her heart-breaking, inspirational story that eventually led to her becoming a successful contestant on the reality show Biggest Loser. I don’t know if you’ve heard, but Swedish mystery novels are all the rage now. What started with Steig Larsson’s explosive “Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” has snowballed into a wealth of great

new options for mystery and thriller lovers. I loved Larsson’s Millennium trilogy so I thought I should try some of the myriad new Scandinavian titles available. I got lucky with “The Hypnotist” by Lars Kepler, an intense crime thriller with lots of twists and turns and action. I flew through this edgy book, so if you want something to keep you on the edge of your seat, I highly recommend it. And the award for the strangest book I read this summer goes to “Warm Bodies” by Isaac Marion. This young adult/teen title is the story of a zombie named R, and his search for more meaning and understanding of his new undead/dead life. After eating the brains of a teenage boy, R begins

to have visions of the boy’s previous life. He ends up falling in love with the boy’s girlfriend, thus inciting a zombie revolution when he protects the girlfriend from the zombie horde. Yes, I know it sounds out there, but this was a surprisingly poignant love story. And yes, they’re making this into a movie. Love for animals

For a Meet & Greet! John Davis, presidential candidate will be here at 6:40pm Sadie Krueger recently presented the Williamston Food Bank with an unusual donation - 250 pounds of pet food. Sadie, who just turned 16, has had a life-long love of animals. So when she made plans to celebrate her birthday, Sadie asked her friends to bring some kind of pet food instead of a gift. The idea was a huge success, netting almost 20 bags of dry pet food, a dozen cans, and several bags of doggie bones and treats. “My dog, Daisy, guarded the food 24/7” said Sadie, “until I could get it all to the Food Bank.” Food Bank co-director, Danny Hulbert, said the Food Bank very seldom gets donations of dog food or any kind of pet food. “The Food Bank now serves about 100 families a month,” said Hulbert,”and I’m sure many of these families have pets. I think it’s wonderful what Sadie has done.” COURTESY PHOTO

Youth, ages 9-18, interested in becoming a part of the production can attend one of the following auditions times at the East Lansing Hannah Community Center: 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25 and Friday, Aug.26 and 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 27. All who participate in the auditions must be available for callbacks. The East Lansing Hannah Community Center is located at 819 Abbot Road. There will be an audition workshop preceding the auditions on Monday, Aug. 22 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the East Lansing Hannah Community Center. The audition workshop is not required for those auditioning; however, it is recommended. The cost of the workshop is $5 for members and $10 for non-members. The workshop is open to youth, ages 9-18. #About the play Adapted by Tim Kelly from the classic novel by Bram Stoker, “Dracula:

The Vampire Play” is an enthralling story of vampirism filled with wonderfully devised characters. Suspicion falls on a mysterious new neighbor, Count Dracula, when Dr. Van Helsing, a specialist in obscure maladies, discovers that beautiful Lucy Westenra is the victim of a vampire. Other characters include Jonathan Harker, who returns from Transylvania with his own story of vampirism; Renfield, who fancies a diet of flies and spiders; Mina, Jonathan’s lovely wife; Arthur, Lucy’s doting fiancée; and Dr. Quincy, Lucy’s psychiatrist uncle who called in Dr. Van Helsing for help. “Dracula: The Vampire Play” was produced by special arrangement with I.E. Clark Publications, Schulenburg, Texas. It will be brought to the East Lansing Hannah Community Center stage Oct. 28-29 and Nov. 4-5. Community members are encouraged to come to a show. WILLIAMSTON - Flag football and cheerleading will be offered this fall under a recreation agreement between the city and Meridian Township. The township has been running the summer baseball, softball, tackle football and basketball programs once offered by the Red Cedar Recreational Association under a contract signed in late February. The City Council and Planning Commission have agreed to expand those activities to include K-8 flag football and cheerleading for grades 3-8. Flag football had previously been offered for grades 3-6 only. The programs are administered by the township in concert with the Williamston Recreation Advisory Council. Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupé Black Series: Frequently, a limited run of specially prepared performance cars leaves the Mercedes-Benz plant wearing the AMG Black Series brand. For 2012, that honor goes to the all-new C-Class coupe. Features include special suspension, brakes and carbon-fiber body pieces, along with a 6.3-liter V8 that makes 510 horsepower, 29 more than the standard AMG Coupé. A seven-speed automated manual transmission handles the shifting chores. MercedesBenz claims the Black Series will reach 60 mph in 4.2 seconds.

1973 Volkswagen Super Beetle, sold der how much gas you’re wasting sitting at red for $4,450: What’s happening to Beetle lights. And what about all those left-hand turns demand these days? Recently, you would where you’re waiting for a break in oncoming have needed at least $6,000-$7,000 to traffic to make your break for it? Wonder acquire no more. United Parcel Service UPS a decent began using new route computer example software that dials out as many (a few left-hand turns as possible. thousand The result for its 95,000 more for trucks, according to UPS, was a a driverreduction in total miles travelled of grade convertible), such as this sharp28.5 million, which helped cut gasoline consumplooking example. But now a nice, drivable tion by about three million gallons. If the no-leftbug will sell for much less as collectors turn policy works for UPS, it could also work for turn their gazes elsewhere. With plenty of you. Without the UPS software, instituting a no-left spare parts and Bug service specialists policy for yourself might be tough, but if you’re at still around, these cars are cheap to own, least conscious of how wasteful left-hand turns fun to drive and always draw a crowd.
