unexcused absences. Under the charter, the council will have 60 days to appoint someone to serve the remainder of Simmons’ term, which expires in December 2013. Besides Simmons’ replacement, the Council will get at least one new member in the November elections. Four Council seats are up for grabs, inluding the seat now held by Larry Wittrup, who is not running for election. Wittrup was appointed to serve the remainder of the term won by Tim Grossman, who was removed from the board after five consecutive unexcused absences. Eight candidates are running for the four seats, including incumbents John Pratt, Michael Moody and Scott VanAllsburg. The election and new vacancy come at a time when the city is searching to replace City Manager Tim Allard, who plans to retire in November. Wittrup, Pratt and Moody are part of a sixmember search commitee that were supposed to have brought a list of candidates to the City Council by late September. As of last week, the committee had met three

times. But problems posting the job opening with the Michigan Municipal League meant the notice didn’t go up until less than two weeks ago, committee members said. As of sept. 21, the city had recieved three or four applications, said Wittrup, who chairs the committee. Wittrup said he’ll recommend that the group bring its recommendations to the Council by the second meeting of October. Because council seats could change hands in November, it might help to to postpone candidate interviews until December, he said. “We need to make sure we make the right decision,” Wittrup said. “Do you do it the smart way, or do you hurry and perhaps make the wrong decision?”

Williamston Red Cedar Garden Club begins new year Members of the Red Cedar Garden Club celebrated the beginning of a new calendar year with a “Welcome Back Meeting” at the Williamston Depot Museum. The first meeting was held Sept. 12 and the board of directors, consisting of Joan Wright, president/ first vice president; Tammy Voss, second vice president; Arla Weaver, treasurer; and Debbie Richards, secretary, hosted a delicious buffet. This year, Banned Books Week falls from Sept. 24–Oct. 1. Observed since 1982 and sponsored by a long list of library associations, booksellers and education groups, BBW is an annual event supporting the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment. It highlights the benefits of free and open access to information, while spotlighting actual or attempted bannings of books across the United States. Whenever I talk about this topic, people are surprised at the number of books that have been banned or challenged. They also question the seemingly silly reasons. Here are some examples from children’s lit: • “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?” by author Bill Martin, Jr. and illustrator Eric Carle. This book was bumped from a Texas elementary school curriculum when someone confused Bill Martin, Jr. with a Bill Martin who wrote “Ethical Marxism.”

• “The Lorax” by Dr. Seuss. Challengers felt the book showed an unfair portrayal of the logging industry. • “James and the Giant Peach” by Roald Dahl. Opponents claimed that this classic promotes alcohol and drug use, and encourages disobedience to parents. • “Light in the Attic” by Shel Silverstein. This book was successfully banned because it was said to “glorify Satan, suicide and cannibalism.” • “Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl.” This treasured account of a real-life Holocaust experience was banned for its tragic nature, which some readers felt was a “real downer.” Other passages were deemed “sexually offensive.”

The list of book bannings and challenges goes on and on. But in the end, book banning just doesn’t work. It’s essential that all people, including young people, have the opportunity to explore books and ideas of all kinds. And even more importantly, parents need to be the primary judges of what is appropriate for their children to consume, from books and music to the Internet and television. Rotary donation to Food Bank appreciated The Williamston Food Bank would like to thank the Williamston Rotary Club for its generous grant award to the Food Bank to purchase a gas generator. In the past, the Food Bank often faced the possibility of food thawing out during times of power outages. Now, thanks to the Rotary Club’s grant, we have been able to purchase a generator from Tractor Supply Company, and have it on hand in case of a power emergency. Williamston High School Girls Golf Team

Writer not impressed with city’s decision I received my tax receipt from the City of Williamston today. This reminded me of my recent conversations with city officials about the lack of completion of paving on Bismark Street during the north side water project. I found out that I was not “part of the project,” that Bismark Street has the second lowest pavement ranking on a one-to-five scale and that it will be several years before my 200 feet of Bismark will be paved. Given that I had PortaJons in my yard, my lawn was dug up, the Spaulding/Bismark intersection was excavated and that I had heavy equipment turning around in my driveway, it’s hard to believe I wasn’t “part of the project.” To educate myself on the finances of this problem I called several paving contractors. As a separate contract project, resurfacing (without grinding) with a couple of inches of asphalt would cost about $5,000. I was told it would be cheaper if done as part of a larger project (aka Economy of Scale) — such as the recent water system improvements, for example? To put this estimate in perspective, $5,000 is 1/2 of 1 percent of the total $5 million cost of the north side water project. Yes, 1/2 of 1 percent. This fact makes it clear why Bismark wasn’t completed — it would have broken the project budget. $5,000, by the way, is less than 25 percent of just the recent amended change orders on the job contract(s). To assist the City of Williamston with the funding necessary to complete projects such as the paving on Bismark to Spaulding, I propose that we taxpayers assist them with money from a community can and bottle drive, thereby demonstrating our civic consciousness and rectifying their silly, penny wise and pound foolish decision to

ignore 200 feet of over a half mile of total paving. My recommendation to the Williamston community is that local residents affected by future major city projects begin their can and bottle drive well in advance of the work. Then, they will have the funds available to supplement financial deficiencies in city decisions. Given this grassroots effort, the city could make a can and bottle collection point available at City Hall and at other locations such as the city engineer’s office. Maybe, through these measures, your street will get completely paved after four months of construction and inconvenience, unlike mine. William (Bill) Lovis Williamston

“Stop tossing and start saving” is the mantra of the Meridian Recycling Committee this fall as they plan their tenth Recycling/ Reuse event for Saturday, Oct. 1 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Electronics, household batteries, all colors of glass, documents for destruction, bicycles, large metal items and scrap metal, polystyrene, packaging peanuts, telephone books, paperback books and hardback books will be accepted for recycling or reuse at the Nancy Moore Park entrance, 2100 Gaylord Smith Court, off Okemos Road just north of Central Park Drive. Again at this event, electronics will be collected by Vintage Tech Recyclers. They will accept computers, monitors, printers, scanners, televisions, mobile phones, computer cable,

mouse and keyboards, facsimile machines, stereos, MP3 players, VCR recorder/players, zip drives, radios, small household appliances and household batteries. All hard drives will be kept in a secure location and wiped by Vintage Tech Recyclers. Documents will be shredded on site by AccuShred and people are welcome to stay and watch their documents while they are destroyed. The shredded paper will then be recycled. All notebooks, spirals and other metal must be removed from the documents before dropping them off to be destroyed. Bicycles will be given to MSU Bikes and Sharea-Bike for reuse. Nonworking bikes and bike parts will also be accepted. Large metals will be collected by Meridian Plumbing. They will accept

stoves, washers, dryers, dishwashers, furnaces, sinks, water heaters, wagons and scrap metal. There is a $15 fee to collect refrigerant from air conditioners, dehumidifiers, refrigerators and freezers. All paperback and hardback books dropped off will be made available on this day for reuse by anyone purchasing them for 25-50 cents each until 3 p.m. Non-profit groups may have books without a fee. Books left at the end of the day, along with phonebooks, will be recycled into paper pulp. Please separate books into fiction and non-fiction bundles. Nick Porter, Williamston senior running back and linebacker, is ready to surprise some people. Heading into the Sept. 23 game with a 2-1 record, Porter believes his team is just as capable as they were last year at making a long run into the tournament. “I think we are living up to last year’s standard pretty good so far,” Porter said. “There are a lot of inexperienced guys, but

I’ve been really impressed with the junior class.” The Division 4 state runner-up team bounced back from a 28-44 loss to Ithaca in its season opener, to grab two straight victories over Lakewood and Perry. Porter has continued to control play on both sides of the ball for the Hornets. The senior entered the game against Portland Sept. 23 with 307 rushing yards on 39 carries and three touchdowns. “We had that first loss to Ithaca, and it really showed that we had a lot

to work on,” Porter said. “That loss showed that we needed people to step up and that bye week benefited us a lot because it gave a lot of guys the opportunity to step up. These last couple of games we’ve looked like a very good team.” The Hornets came out of the bye week and grabbed a 32-14 victory over Lakewood followed by a 48-12 defeat over Perry. Only a few starters are back from last year, but the Hornets are loaded with talent.

Porter is getting a lot of help from senior quarterback John Westphal and junior running back Ray Duncan. Westphal, a first year starter, headed into last Friday’s game against Portland, with nine touchdowns, completing 42-of-67 passing for 738 yards and eight touchdown passes. “Nobody knew how he was going to play,” Porter said. “He’s been big for us this year. “Ray Duncan has also really impressed me. He is

a junior and making all the plays for us.” Duncan headed into Portland’s matchup with 10 receptions for 224 yards and four touchdowns. Coach Steve Kersten said, while he was pleased with the offensive performance in the victory over Lakewood, his team will need to minimize penalties in order to survive the upcoming competition. The Hornets had 134 yards in penalties against Perry. “That’s my main area of concern,” Kersten said.

After a 4-0 start to the season, Williamston tennis faced its toughest competition recently with three dual meets against No. 4 Portland, No. 2 Ann Arbor Greenhills and No. 1 Lansing Catholic. The Hornets fell in all three dual meets, but coach Phil Brillantes thinks the losses may be just what his team needed. “Playing against the best is really the only way to see what your team in made of,” he said. “We learned that we have come along a lot further than expected and we can compete headto-head with some of the best competition in the state, even if this is a rebuilding year for us.” Junior Michael Sienko

remains undefeated at No. 1 singles and recently defeated defending state champion Paul Heeder of Lansing Catholic. Sienko also defeated Chance Conley from Portland, who has also been a top contender for the title over the past few years. “All my singles guys have improved greatly and have pulled some great wins against all those teams,” Brillantes said. “If we get to States, I feel some of my singles guys have the ability to make a deep run in their respective flights.” “Even though we haven’t been winning on paper, our growth has been incredible,” Brillantes said. “Last year, we were not even sure if we would even make States.” The Hornets will host Lansing Christian Tuesday.

Harrison Formerly of Lansing, MI Edward Swierczynski of Harrison passed away on September 15, 2011 after a brief illness. Born June 1, 1922 in Nanticoke, PA. He was employed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) as a youth and served in the Eighth Air Force 303rd Bombardment Group "Hells Angels" during World War II serving 2 1/2 years in the European Theater as a Corporal. He retired to Harrison in 1981 from Avis Industrial Corporation/Melling Forging Co., after 35 years of service. He was preceded in death by his parents, son-in-law, Bruce E. Reeder, 1 brother, and his wife of nearly 50 years, Betty Mae (Earley) Swierczynski. Surviving are his daughter, Suzanne J. Reeder; 4 grandchildren, Jeffrey A. (Beverly) Reeder, Lisa A. (Ethan) Grant, Christina L. (Ronald) Riggs and Christopher D. (Kelly) Reeder; 8 great-grandchildren; 3 step great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-granddaughter; 1 step great-great-grandson; very special friend, Mary Shaw; 3 brothers, Fred Swierczynski, Stan (Dorothy) Swierczynski, and John (Irene) Swierczynski; and 3 sisters, Mary Haskell, Helen Hudson, and Sophie Estee. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tues day, September 20, 2011 at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Home, 900 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing. Williamston Richard L. Couturier, age 72, died September 20, 2011. He was born Jan. 23, 1939 in Detroit to Spencer and Margaret (Yeten) Couturier and married Mildred L. Brennan in Dearborn Heights on May 9, 1959, she preceded him in death on Feb. 1, 2010. He was a veteran of the US Army, retired from the Redford Twp. Fire Department, was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Williamston and enjoyed golfing. Orloff estimates some 30,000 Michigan residents have Parkinson’s. Symptoms include tremors at rest, slowness of movement or reaction and problems with falling or loss of balance in the later stage of the disease. The Lansing support group, one of 56 statewide, meets monthly at Valley Court Community Center in East Lansing at 6 p.m. on the third Tuesday. “There is no cure and no diagnostic test. You don’t die of Parkinson’s, but it can take its toll,” Orloff said. “It affects the patient and the family, and we are working to help both.”

“It’s a good thing this is a show with more mature actors. We’ve gone through our 20s, we’ve experienced a lot. We’ve made mistakes, gotten over that and learned from them. I’ve drawn on all those experiences to bring that into the character.” While Payne said playing someone she’s never been requires some suspension of disbelief, she does remember what it was like to be 16. She also sees the female

characters as having different acting challenges than the men. “They go from young men to adults, and there’s a lot of tension between them. We haven’t had a transition like that at all, so we’re making two completely different journeys as an actor,” she added. “Thinking about how they moved in the 50s, vs. a hooker character in the 60s – the time period and who your character is makes such a difference.”

OKEMOS – Parkinson’s is a harsh disease – difficult to diagnose, perplexing to treat, a burden to manage. Regular exercise is thought to help, and those participating in the second annual “I Gave My Sole for Parkinson’s” walkathon and 5K run are committed to making things easier. The event begins at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 1 at Okemos High School, 2800 Jolly Road. Onsite registration begins at 9 a.m. Chairpersons are Gene and Alice Kenyon of Mason. Michigan Parkinson’s Foundation executive director Deborah Orloff said there are 272 participants already pre-registered. The 5K will take place on Okemos High’s crosscountry course, while walk-

ers may walk for as long as they like on the school’s track. Same-day registration is $15 for adult walkers and $10 for those 12 and younger. The fee for runners is $20 in advance and $5 extra on the day of the event. Funds raised help develop Parkinson’s-related programs in the Lansing area and across Michigan. Orloff said some of the funds from the inaugural race went toward a recent daylong Parkinson’s symposium held at the Lansing Center. “This is not just fund-raising. This is bringing people together from all over the state – this is a celebration of people with Parkinson’s,” Orloff said. In addition to sponsors, event t-shirts will also feature the names of those for whom people are walking in honor or in memory.
