Building restoration crossing hurdles Ken Palmer kpalmer@lsj.com
WILLIAMSTON - In the works for more than three years, a grant-funded building restoration project in downtown Williamston could be finished by the end of the year, developers say. December is the target for completing the mixeduse building at 109/115 E. Grand River Avenue, said Steve Eyke, one of the principals of 109 Building Redevelopment LLC. “That’s kind of the floating, moving target,” he said. “We’re working with 100-percent energy toward getting it open.” Developers and city officials were trying to clear some final hurdles, including a last-minute change involving the first-floor tenant. Michigan Brewing Co. has been dropped as the restaurant creator in favor of a new entity called Tavern
109. Eyke said the arrangement between his company and the brewery broke down for “various reasons.” A full-service bar and restaurant, Tavern 109 will offer a “bistro, bar food menu” and serve microbrew beers, including Michigan Brewing Co. products, Eyke said. The restaurant will have a “comfortable atmosphere in a historic building, something like you might find out East in some of the older communities,” he said. On Oct. 10, the City Council approved a Class C liquor license request by the developers and agreed to ask the Michigan Economic Development Corporation to approve the change of tenants and extend a jobcreation deadline. The grant agreement required Michigan Brewing Co. to create 9.5 permanent jobs by the end of October. The city wants the
MEDC to extend that deadline to April 30, with Tavern 109 as the job-creator. Michael Gradis, a city planning consultant, said the MEDC is aware of the switch and that he doesn’t anticipate problems getting those changes approved. City Council members toured the building last week and were impressed by what they saw, he said. The project includes the first-floor restaurant/bar and six housing units on the second and third floors. The housing work is partly funded by a grant from the Michigan State Housing Development Authority and should be finished about the same time as the restaurant, Eyke said. A separate grant is being used to restore the front of the building and build the first-floor restaurant space. Eyke said he’s pleased fundraising. “It’s a recreation of the able to find. with the results, despite the “I’m very pleased with way it looked back in the And the inside of the complicated process involv- the way the outside of the 1870s, based on the photo tavern will be a very, very ing grants, partnerships and building looks,” he said. documentation we’ve been cool place.”
Two Williamston residents charged with MDPV possession Ken Palmer kpalmer@lsj.com
WILLIAMSTON - Felony charges have been issued against three people in connection with a drug-related incident that put two of them in intensive care on Sept. 29. Police said the victims - a 22-year-old man and
an 18-year-old woman from Williamston - were rushed to Sparrow Hospital after using MDPV, short for methylenedioxypyrovalerone, a designer drug often sold as bath salts. The two victims, who have since been released from Sparrow, were charged with possessing the controlled substance, a
maximum two-year felony, in warrants signed Oct. 17 by an Ingham County magistrate. Meanwhile, a 23-year-old man was charged in connection with a marijuana grow operation found at the house where the victims had taken the MDVP, authorities said. The man faces a maximum four-year
felony charge, they said. All three suspects were expected to turn themselves in last week, Williamston police Chief Bob Young said. The charges stem from a Sept. 29 medical call at a house on Georgia Street. Police and paramedics rushed to the residence about 10:30 p.m. and found
the male victim lying on the living room floor and the woman screaming and flailing her arms. An officer struggled to hold her to the floor to keep her from injuring herself, police said. Both victims were taken by ambulance to Sparrow and placed in intensive care. The man remained in the hospital for about nine days,
police said. “They are doing very, very good compared to where they came from,” Young said. “(But) there are still some medical issues lingering from this.” A witness told police the two victims had taken Drone, short for See CHARGES, Page 4

It may not have been an ideal draw for the players, but Williamston soccer coach Brent Sorg got just what he wanted. The Hornets defeated Laingsburg 8-0 in the opening round of their Division 3 district tournament on Oct. 17. Williamston (11-8-2) played Perry in the second round of districts on Oct. 19, after this paper went to press. The Hornets tied with Perry earlier this season. “When the draw came out, some of them weren’t
excited about it,” Sorg said. “To me it was the perfect setup. It was exactly what we wanted. It’s going to be a tough road but you want to say that you earned it and at the end of the day that’s what it’s about.” A victory over Perry would advance the Hornets to the final, where they would likely meet rival Lansing Catholic for the second time this season. The Hornets beat Lansing Catholic in overtime during the regular season for the first time in two years. Zach Sundin leads the
