There are lots of exciting career opportunities in Scotland’s land-based, aquaculture and environmental conservation sector, with many allowing you to do a Modern Apprenticeship and earn while you learn through your workplace. Combining the practical experience you get at work with the learning you do for a nationally recognised qualification, Modern Apprenticeships give you the knowledge and skills you need for your career. You earn while you are learn and get trained to the standards that your industry needs, and can often go onto higher levels of qualification as you progress in your career.

How does a Modern Apprenticeship work? You will work within a business alongside other employees, learning skills from them whilst studying towards a Scottish Vocational Qualification, which is part of the Modern Apprenticeship. Although it varies by programme, you will normally spend time with a training provider in a classroom
or workshop environment, gaining further skills and knowledge through day release or block release. Lots of different industries in the land-based, aquaculture and environmental conservation sector offer a Modern Apprenticeship route to a successful and exciting career.
Agriculture
Equine
If you’re fascinated by food and drink production, are practical, hard-working and like the outdoors or want to lead the way in science and technology, a career in agriculture could be for you.
From riding schools, competition and racehorse yards to mounted police; many jobs demand a strong interest in caring for animals and an ability to ensure that health and welfare standards are up to the right standards.
Modern Apprenticeships are available at Level 2 (SCQF 5) and 3 (SCQF 6) through Borders College, local authorities, Orkney College UHI, SRUC and Train Shetland.
Aquaculture Aquaculture is the farming of freshwater and marine plants and animals, including salmon, seabass, trout, mussels, oysters and seaweed. It’s innovative and full of opportunities to learn everything from hatcheries to harvesting, using specialised technology and scientific methods. Modern Apprenticeships are available at Level 2 (SCQF 5) and 3 (SCQF 7) with a Technical Apprenticeship at Level 4 (SCQF 9) through Argyll College UHI, Inverness College UHI and NAFC Marine Centre UHI.

Lantra
Game and Wildlife Management You should have an interest in traditional countryside sports, in the rearing of deer and game birds, in habitat and woodlands management and an understanding of sustainable tourism in the countryside. You need to be confident in working by yourself and with other people. Modern Apprenticeships are available at Level 2 (SCQF 5) through Borders College, North Highland College UHI and SRUC.
Horticulture
Rural Skills or Rural Land Use and Management
Routes available include production horticulture, amenity, landscape and sports turf. If you’re interested in working with the latest technology, developing new species and innovative methods of growing, and dealing with people and businesses across the country, you’ll enjoy a career in horticulture.
Allows you to work within specialist or general careers in agriculture, forestry and woodlands, game and wildlife, tourism and leisure activities and conservation management.
Modern Apprenticeships are available at Level 2 (SCQF 5) and 3 (SCQF 6) through Argyll College UHI, Borders College, Dundee and Angus College, Glasgow Clyde College, Gosta Training, local authorities, SRUC and Train Shetland.
Land-based Engineering
Modern Apprenticeships are available at Level 2 (SCQF 5) and 3 (SCQF 6/7) and The Technical Apprenticeship in Rural Land Use and Management is available at Level 4 (SCQF 8) through local authorities, Rural Skills Scotland and SRUC.
Trees and Timber
This industry plays a vital role in the success of food and drink, agriculture, horticulture and forestry. Ideal for people who love working on equipment, you could be dealing with anything from small garden tools through to tractors and large forestry machinery.
Whether you like being outdoors using machinery and getting your hands dirty, or prefer science or research within a lab, trees and timber offers many different types of jobs and rewarding careers within the public and private sectors. Pathways are available in forestry or arboriculture.
