The Chief Forester’s Challenge

in STEM Week 22 - 26 November 2021

Design your own treehouse The treehouse needs to be made of timber and can be filled with lots of fantastic items and ideas that would make it the ideal spot for playing. You will need to think about what timber or trees the house could be made from, and where the treehouse could be built/placed – is the treehouse in your favourite tree, such as one in your back garden or one you see walking to school? The competition entries can be presented as your own drawings, artwork, or digital artwork. The competition is open to any primary school-aged pupil in Scotland. The prizes available to winning and runner’s-up are:

£50 Amazon voucher for the pupil with the winning entry, as well as £250 worth of STEM or educational kits for the school. £30 Amazon voucher prize for pupil

£20 Amazon voucher prize for pupil

Lead a session for others in your school about the Chief Forester’s Challenge: can you support a group of pupils in your school to complete the challenge? Leading a session counts as leadership activity for a YSL2 or YSL3 Award. Create a video, podcast or poster to share your design with others: Where is the STEM in the Chief Forester’s challenge? Share this video with others as part of your YSL2 or YSL3 STEM leadership. More information on the Young STEM Leader programme can be found here.

You can start working on your entry from launch day, Wednesday 24th November 2021, with the deadline for all entries to be submitted being Friday 14th January 2022 at 12 noon. The judging panel for the competition comprises of; Helen McKay, Chief Forester for Scotland Bonnie Maggio, Education and Skills Policy Advisor, Scottish Forestry Liz Barron-Majerik, Scotland Director, Lantra Alastair MacGregor, Chief Executive, SSERC The winners of the competition will be announced during STEM Ambassadors in Scotland Week on 4th February 2022. The overall winning and runner-up entries and schools will be shared on Lantra Scotland and STEM Ambassadors in Scotland social media pages and may be made available as a resource on the forestry and aquaculture industries to schools across Scotland.
