The Academy Training Hotel and Restaurant is part of Vientiane Province Technical College, offering students of tourism and hospitality programs a unique practical training environment in the heart of beautiful Vang Vieng. Staffed by students, these budding young professionals are overseen by their teachers and an international management team while developing their core skills and preparing to enter the workforce. Developed to provide a "real-world" hotel environment, The Academy provides students with a unique practical training opportunity by interacting and working with actual restaurant and/or hotel customers. Students are prepared to become future hospitality workers, providing the industry with a cohort of well-trained, enthusiastic graduates. At the close of the 2020-2021 academic year, 99 students graduated from The Academy.
The aspiring young professionals graduated from three different majors, namely Travel Agency and Tour Operations, Hotel Operations, and Restaurant Operations. Depending on their chosen major, students gained specifc practical insights at The Academy – for instance, amongst a variety of experiences, future tour operators were given the opportunity to provide recommendations on worthwhile
local attractions to clients at the front desk, hotel operations students took care of managing the hotel’s meeting room bookings, and restaurant chefs-to-be learned a variety of local and international recipes inside The Academy’s state of the art kitchen.
“I still remember my frst day here at The Academy, surrounded and astounded by all these new utensils and appliances, when we were shown by the teachers how to make pizza dough and then instructed to give it a try ourselves”, Khambai Vongsodsavanh, a freshly minted restaurant operations graduate, recalls enthusiastically. It is this sort of excitement for their chosen professions that The Academy has kindled not only in Khambai, but also her many peers. “Each day and each customer is different - you never know what requests might come your way”, reveals Bounta Bounpany, who wants to become a tour operator and manned the front offce at The Academy. “But I want to be prepared as best as I can. For example, I spend my free time researching the latest sites and attractions in and around Vang Vieng, so that I can point them out to visitors.”

While The Academy will employ some alumni of the college as mentors to new students, many of them are now also looking forward to fnding jobs in the tourism and hospitality sector in and around Vang Vieng to become more independent and support their families with their income. Their outlook? Optimistic. ‘‘I think businesses will always be looking for people who are willing to go the extra mile. If you are an excellent professional, businesses will fnd a way to recruit you’’, says Khambai confdently. For anyone who wants to help shape the next cohort of young Lao tourism professionals, a stay, a meeting, or a meal at The Academy would be one of the best ways to accomplish just that. The hotel, with rooms available from 150,000 LAK per night, offers six charming guest bedrooms equipped with a private balcony, bathroom, A/C, LCD TV, WiFi, and complimentary tea/coffee making facilities. The Academy restaurant uses the freshest ingredients to offer delicious international and local cuisine. The Academy can also accommodate meetings and events tailored to your needs. DESTINATION
On a fat plain surrounded by rice paddies in the north of Laos lies Luang Namtha. The history of the area goes back a long way and is crisscrossed by the ancient trade routes between Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam. For a town sitting a mere 55 km from the Chinese border, little has changed in the past decade. The roads are bigger and in better condition but the essence of the sleepy old town remains. Luang Namtha is the gateway to many adventure trips, including hiking or kayaking in the surrounding wilderness areas. To get a lay of the land pick up an area map, and also check out the useful Luang Namtha tourism website. You also should get a motorbike or a bicycle, to help get around. The charming Luang Namtha Valley Route leads to all of the major points of interest around the area.
Points on the trail are a mix of ethnic villages, pretty scenery, and local life. Two routes are offered including the longer one of 35 km encircling Luang Namtha has seven different ethnic groups which are represented in the villages on the trail including Thai Dam, Lao Bit, Tai Youn, Akha, and Hmong.

On a recent visit, we began our journey behind the airport just south of town. This used to be the old city before it was destroyed during the Battle of Luang Namtha in 1962. Passing through rice paddies, we stopped at Ban Nam Ngaen where we could observe the Tai Dam methods of rice alcohol production. Imbibe if you dare - it’s quite strong and similar in taste to sake.
A little farther beyond the village is Luang Namtha’s version of the famous That Luang stupa in Vientiane. It’s worth climbing the hillside to the stupa and temple around sunset to catch a sweeping view of the valley below. At the northern end of town, Ban Had Yao has a small crafts center that sells fnely worked Hmong embroidery and crafts, which make the best souvenirs. Ban Nam Dee is a Lanten village making bamboo paper using ancient methods.
While driving the route we also observed locals gathering algae from the Nam Tha River to make Khai Phaen, or dried river weed, which is different here than in other parts of Laos with the addition of ginger juice. This leads us to another outstanding feature of Luang Namtha: food.
Luang Namtha is the gateway to many adventure trips.
Observe their distinctive traditional dress of dyed indigo tunics accentuated with chunky silver jewelry and white leggings. Adept at needlecraft, you will more than likely see the ladies embroidering if they are not setting up bamboo frames beside the stream to make bamboo paper.
If you are a foodie the Luang Namtha Market is a must-see. The surrounding area’s natural resources have contributed to Luang Namtha’s cuisine comprising of products available from the forests and the rivers. The market is abundant with items such as spiky rattan, bamboo shoots, fresh herbs, and mushrooms. I frst visited this charming old wooden building, with roof slats that let in the afternoon sun, in 2007. Back then, there was some rather exotic wildlife on sale, caught by local hunters from the forest. The wildlife trade is more restricted these days, but the vibe of the building remains the same. Keep your eyes open for one of the most famous dishes of Luang Namtha Province, Khao soy (a noodle soup topped with a pork bolognese) and the special round rice noodles for the soup that are hand-cut into ribbons on the spot.

The savory pork and bean paste for the soup is made and brought to the market from local villages specialized in preparing the salty concoction. An interesting night market gets going at sundown just off the main street. Many vendors offer local specialties including plates piled high with laap (a herbal minced meat salad). Yet, here it’s made differently than in the rest of Laos, using banana fowers for an acerbic bite.
A visit to the newly revamped Luang Namtha museum is also worth a stop. From old drums to textiles, handmade weapons and coins, and anthropological exhibits, the museum is well-planned and interesting.
It’s easily worth visiting for a couple of hours. Further afeld Luang Namtha is surrounded by pristine forests in the Nam Ha National Protected Area. We took a dirt bike out to Nalae following the course of the Nam Tha River banks. The road was challenging but the stunning views and glimpses into Khmu village life made up for it. We saw small hamlets where locals were adept in a variety of manual skills: making brooms by hand, repairing bamboo bridges, and fshing with traditional bamboo traps.
The Luang Namtha Museum has many exhibits

There are many options to venture deep into the National Protected Area with jungle experiences to areas that can only be visited on 2- or 3-day treks with homestays are offered by many agents in town. For wildlife spotters, the forests are still home to species of clouded leopard, gaur, and gibbons, if you are up for a few days of jungle living.
Beyond Luang Namtha town, the province also offers the best chance of encountering some of the most diverse ethnic groups in the country, which can be found in Meuang Sing, Xieng Kok, or Vieng Phoukha. With so many other adventures to have, I can’t wait until my next trip!

WILDLIFE
In a gorgeous mountain valley beside quaint rural villages, you’ll fnd one of the gems of northern Laos, the Luang Prabang Wildlife Sanctuary. Operated by the Australian wildlife charity Free the Bears, the sanctuary cares for sun bears, moon bears, and other endangered species rescued from the illegal wildlife trade by the Laos government, in partnership with Free the Bears.
Sun bears are the world’s smallest bear species while moon bears, also known as Asiatic black bears, are around twice the size of a sun bear and named after the distinct white crescent-shaped marking on their chest. Both species are endangered with numbers in the wild rapidly declining.
Watching these intelligent and playful bears climbing trees, chasing each other through the forest, and playing in the lakes and pools is an absolute joy. Free the Bears was started in 1995 by an Australian grandmother, Mary Hutton, after she saw a news report about bears kept in appalling conditions in bile farms. Over the past 26 years, the charity has helped rescue almost 1,000 endangered bears and also operates rescued bear sanctuaries in Vietnam and Cambodia.
The sanctuary, which opened in late 2017, is rapidly expanding to cope with growing numbers of rescues. Six bear houses care for over 50 rescued bears including Mary, a sun bear whose rescue and rehabilitation featured in the BBC documentary series Bears About the House, flmed in 2019. Three red pandas, intercepted in 2018 while being smuggled from
China into Laos, enjoy a panda palace built among giant teak trees. Multiple other animals of various endangered species currently call the Luang Prabang Wildlife Sanctuary home. Whenever possible, smaller species which can live in the trees such as leopard cats, civets, and pangolins, are released into safe and protected forests once rehabilitated. For the bears, however, with few forests in Laos safe from poachers and wire snare traps, a release back to the forest isn’t possible. The bears will most likely require lifelong care at the sanctuaries, a huge commitment for the small nonproft charity.
Habitat destruction, poaching, and the illegal wildlife trade are the greatest threats to bears and other species in Laos. But it’s not all bad news.
Stronger wildlife laws and increased policing by Laos authorities are showing positive effects. Over the past few years, there have been a record number of bears rescued and brought to the sanctuary.
Free the Bears also runs research, education, and awareness initiatives to help protect wildlife, as well as providing alternative livelihoods to impoverished communities to relieve hunting pressures. Free the Bears also operates the Tat Kuang Si Bear Rescue Centre, located beside the famous waterfalls, providing care to dozens of rescued moon bears. Both sanctuaries are around 23km from Luang Prabang and both offer a behind-thescenes tour, giving you a once-ina-lifetime opportunity to meet the bears as well as prepare and hide a special enrichment treat and then watch the bears excitedly hunt for their treats.

HELP COMES TO THE PLAIN OF JARS

As Laos and the United States together celebrate the ffth anniversary of the U.S.-Lao Comprehensive Partnership, the United States is to provide $129,000 toward the conservation of the ancient, megalithic stone jars found at the Plain of Jars site in Xieng Khouang Province.
The Plain of Jars is a UNESCO World Heritage Site where thousands of stone jars can be found scattered across the landscape of the Xieng Khouang Plateau. The jars are arrayed in clusters spanning between one and several hundred in number and are believed to have been used as burial chambers for a mysterious ancient people.
Dr. Peter Haymond, U.S. Ambassador to Laos, visited the Plain of Jars site in August where he announced the United States’ intention to issue the grant during a ceremony at the Plain of Jars, attended by Vice Governor of Xiengkhouang province, Mr. Sivilay Sengchaleun; Vice Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism Mr. Ounethouang Khaophanh; and representatives from Ministry of Foreign Affairs and offcials concerned of both sides.
"I am happy to be part of the continued preservation of this impressive, historic site,” said Ambassador Haymond. “These megalithic jars are testimony to the rich cultural traditions in Laos, going back
thousands of years. As we celebrate the 5th Anniversary of the U.S.-Lao Comprehensive Partnership, and the 20th anniversary of the Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP) program here in Laos, we remain committed to working with the Lao people and government in all aspects of cultural preservation and socio-economic development.”
Funding for the Plain of Jars will be part of the AFCP and will see the establishment of a database and GIS system to develop and maintain an inventory of jars and jar sites, conservation and restoration of damaged jars and lids, and capacity-building among local staff and authorities responsible for the World Heritage sites in the area.
MORE INFO
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the AFCP program worldwide, as well as in the Lao PDR. The Ambassadors Fund supports projects around the world to preserve a wide range of cultural heritage in less developed countries, including historic buildings, archaeological sites, ethnographic objects, paintings, manuscripts, and indigenous languages and other forms of traditional cultural expression.

Pink-clad foodpanda riders have become a regular sight, not only in Vientiane, but throughout many areas of Laos. You may have noticed some pink buildings sprouting up in Vientiane, as well. These are foodpanda’s latest innovation: pandamart.
What is a pandamart? Powered by a new generation of quick commerce technology, it is actually an online convenience store, the only one in Laos, where goods are delivered straight to your door. The pandamart buildings are actually depots for a wide range of products which are sold only through the foodpanda app. When you order, a foodpanda rider collects your purchases at a pandamart and brings straight them to you. All of this happens within 25 minutes!
Many kinds of groceries and household essentials are available from pandamart. These are the same global and local brands, and with the same quality, commonly found throughout Laos. The added bonus is knowing exactly what is available in the shop and getting it directly into your hand without having to leave your house!
Currently, there are two pandamarts around Vientiane, in Don Noun and near Khouvieng, but there are several more planned in Vientiane and many more coming soon throughout the country. So, prepare to see more pink buildings popping up, bringing everyday convenience to more people every day. To

Visitors to southern Laos often land in Pakse and then dash off to the Bolaven Plateau or the 4000 Islands. But there are some hidden gems in the town for those in the know, particularly on the culinary scene. Meet Helen May, the charming owner of Cloud 9 Café and Hostel. An Australian by birth, she has worked tirelessly to bring international favors to Pakse. Originally trained as a nurse educator and a vocational teacher, she has always been passionate about cooking. “I fnd that I’m the happiest when I am in the kitchen bringing to life new tastes and ideas,” says Helen.
Helen has traveled and lived in many places around the world from Vietnam to Turkey, and these infuences have found their way into her cooking repertoire, including Egyptian falafel, chicken schnitzel and avocado chocolate mud cakes, as
well as a variety of vegan and vegetarian dishes. Helen adds, “I’m an Australian, so of course I love to work with premium Australian grass-fed beef, and my breakfasts are the best in Pakse as I use real Australiabacon!”
Cloud 9 is more than just a business for Helen. She also utilises her educational skills. “Helen is passionate to create a space for young Lao people to gain hospitality skills and become more comfortable speaking English with foreigners,” continued Helen.
The space itself also speaks to Helen’s quirky creative spirit. Using retro and vintage materials, that are all lovingly upcycled into furniture and décor. Murals also adorn the dining room, reminiscent of Helen’s globetrotting days, so her travel experiences can be shared. She also talks of her love for the city, “I really want to make an impact here, as much has Pakse has made an impact on me.”

TFeuang in Vientiane Province has some similarities to Vang Vieng, but as it lies off the established tourist circuit, it has a much more authentic feel. The scenery is one of the most peculiar in Laos, situated alongside the Nam Lik River and surrounded by unique and unusual limestone mountains. Recent donations by fervent Buddhists have also contributed to some of Laos’ most unexpectedly famboyant temples nearby. From striking mountains to a peaceful river to abundant agriculture, Meuang Feuang has something to offer for everyone.
Wat Sinxay Xayaram is one of Laos' most elaborate and unique temples, and it is being added all the time.
