SShrouded in cloudy mists sits the almost-legendary city of Viengxay. It is a tranquil town now, but it was an underground center of activity during the Indochina War, quite literally! This mountainous area was the headquarters of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party, which operated out of a network of 480 caves hidden in the limestone karst mountains dotting the landscape between 1964-1973 and provided shelter for 23,000 people from aerial bombing raids. Around the network are caves which were home offces for revolutionary leaders, government ministries, military barracks, printing presses, a hospital, schools, and a theater.
After a ceasefre agreement in 1973, people were able to move out of the caves. Leaders built homes and ministries constructed offces just outside their caves and continued the work of the revolution until national liberation in 1975.
Now, visitors may take guided tours from the Viengxay Cave Visitor Center which includes a very informative audio tour flled with interviews of local people who lived in the caves during the war.
Through the tragedy and the triumph of the revolutionary history of the area, you will really understand that Viengxay is the birthplace of the Lao PDR.
Viengxay is only 28km from Sam Neua. Lao Skyway has daily fights from Vientiane to Nathong Airport in Sam Neua.

Words and Images Skills for Tourism Project (LAO/029)
TThe Academy Training Hotel and Restaurant in Vang Vieng has recently opened and is now welcoming guests for overnight stays, meals, and hosting meetings and workshops. The Academy is part of Vientiane Province Technical College, offering students of tourism and hospitality programs a unique practical training environment in the heart of Vang Vieng. Staffed by students, these budding young professionals are overseen by their teachers and an international management team while developing their core skills and preparing to enter the workforce.
While guests experience The Academy as a unique hotel and restaurant offering delicious food with enthusiastic staff, it's much more than that - this really is all about education. By staying and dining here, it allows students to acquire skills and knowledge more directly linked to their future.
Developed to provide a “real-world” hotel environment
The Academy provides students with a unique practical training opportunity using a fully integrated teaching and learning education approach. Students are prepared to become future hospitality workers, providing the industry with a cohort of well-trained, enthusiastic graduates.
The hotel, with rooms available from 150,000 LAK per night, offers six guest bedrooms that blend style and comfort with simplicity. Each bedroom has a private balcony and is equipped with A/C, LCD TV, WiFi, minibar, complimentary tea/coffee making facilities, and ensuite bathroom, with the price including breakfast as well. Not only will you get a comfortable night’s sleep in one of the charming bedrooms, but you will sleep soundly in the knowledge that your money (and your time) spent in The Academy is contributing to the futures of the young people working here.
It allows students to acquire skills and knowledge more directly linked to their future.
Chef Serge Selbe, the owner of Vientiane’s PimentÓn Restaurant and a professional with over 30 years of industry experience, has been working with the teachers and students to set up a delicious fusion menu blending international and local produce, combining fresh ingredients, native herbs, and spices to create innovative yet simple dining options.
Just by sleeping and eating delicious food here, you are contributing directly to supporting educational opportunities for young Lao students!
With the current border closures and lack of international tourist arrivals, The Academy is looking to supplement the domestic visitors and utilize its fully equipped meeting facilities for hosting Government, Embassies, NGOs, and corporate workshops. Only a one-hour highway drive from Vientiane, The Academy offers a delightful spot to host your upcoming training workshop or meeting.
The essence of responsible tourism is not just that it does no harm, but that it enhances the destination for the beneft of local communities and tourists alike. The Academy attempts to do this by offering an international quality hotel and restaurant, while at the same time enhancing the practical skills of the students, many of which are from poor family backgrounds.
This practical training and experience provides the students with the key foundational skills they need to embark on a professional career in tourism and hospitality – one that can provide for themselves and their families, and as is often the case in Laos, supports younger siblings to be able to continue their own education.
So why not look to host your next meeting or workshop here and support the development of these young students? Your patronage of The Academy will support training and encourage students to reach their full potential and become providers in their families and have a brighter future.

This small town in Northern Laos is a great place to see incredible scenery and relax.
GGetting into nature and away from the stresses of city life is now only an hour away from Vientiane by car. Vang Vieng has always been a favorite spot for its stunning mountain scenery, relaxed pace of life, and the serene Song River, and now there is more to do than ever before.
Old and young alike can enjoy a kayaking trip along the river. Driving about fve kilometers north, climb into your kayak and enjoy a gentle paddle back. There are also some caves along this route that are great to stop and explore, as well as riverside restaurants to break up the journey.
Nearby are also multiple Blue Lagoon areas, great for an afternoon of swimming, relaxing, and beautiful photos. The electric blue hue of the water comes from mineral deposits from the limestone mountains nearby.
For the more physically active, hiking is also available. Viewpoints have been built on a few mountains in the area giving breathtaking panoramic views over the landscape. Some of the hikes up can be quite steep, so remember to bring water and good shoes.
Children will defnitely enjoy riding Ponies of Vang Vieng. These small rugged horses were traditionally used to transport goods along the Tea Caravan Trail to China. They have now been given a new purpose and are well cared for. Learn to ride these beautiful animals on a trek near the Song River, or even take a carriage ride around the area.
There is also one special activity that can make any trip to Vang Vieng absolutely memorable. Ride into the sky on a hot air balloon – the only place you can do this in Laos! Get a perfect bird’s-eye view at sunrise or sunset of the mountains and river.
Vang Vieng has no shortage of fun for people of all ages and there is plenty to enjoy again and again.
Vang Vieng is easily accessed in one hour by car along the Vientiane-Vang Vieng Expressway.
TTraveling in airplanes is certainly fast and convenient, but to help you reach places farther afeld, there is Ford Laos. Distributed in the country by RMA Laos, Ford has continually lifted the standard of excellence and service in the automotive sector, while offering the best in American engineering.
Headquartered in Bangkok, RMA Group is a leading provider of automotive, equipment, services, and food brands in Southeast Asia and the group now serves 14 countries throughout the region. RMA Group frst made inroads into Laos in 1994 supporting infrastructure developmeant projects across the country.
“At that time, we began with only a small number of staff based in Vientiane,” recalls Mr. Wayne McIntosh, Automotive Director at RMA Laos. He adds, “since then we have grown consistently year-on-year, and now are proud to employ 632 people throughout the country.”
In Laos, the company has brought in a very diverse portfolio of brands. In the automotive sector, RMA is the authorized distributor of Jaguar, Land Rover, Mahindra, and since 2001, Ford vehicles. These include popular pickups like the Ranger Raptor
and Wildtrak, as well as commercial vehicles, such as the Transit, Happy Bus, Executive Bus and an array of vans. Ford vehicles are available for a test drive at Lao Ford City dealerships located in Luang Prabang, Vientiane, Savannakhet, and Pakse.
Pricing is strategically optimized to offer the lowest total cost of ownership for Lao customers and fnancing solutions are available through RMA’s subsidiary BSP-Devco. Ford’s in-house team of mechanics offer fast and effcient after-sales service and maintenance at authorized service centers at each Lao Ford City.
The company also owns Quicklane, offering total vehicle service and routine maintenance solutions for any brand of automobile, from tire replacement to oil changes to new batteries to air-conditioning repair. “Lao customers are demanding longer intervals between maintenance checkups, greater fuel effciency, and extended warranties combined with Roadside Assistance, in the rare instance there is a breakdown,” said
McIntosh. Customers who are located far away from a service center can take advantage of Ford’s Mobile Workshops around the country, a special service to provide tailormade on site full service and maintenance solutions at any location.
Besides offering a diverse array of vehicles and a full package of fnancing and maintenance options, what is the secret to RMA’s success? “It’s easy,” said McIntosh, “for 27 years, RMA Laos has been fortunate to have a great team who looks after our customers and delivered a superior level of service. Our winning formula begins with our people.”
Our winning formula begins with our people.

First is our purpose of helping people get the most out of life through high-quality solutions to protect wealth, grow assets, and help save for life’s goals. The second fundamental that has driven our success are the people of Prudential who embody our values of ambition, courage, curiosity, empathy, and nimbleness.
Our people are the core of our business. Our culture is one of collaboration, openness, empowerment, innovation, learning, and respect. We have an open working environment that promotes communication, engagement, and collaboration in generating, discussing, and implementing ideas.
The Covid-19 pandemic provided opportunities for Prudential to recalibrate our business and reskill to prepare for the future. For example, we put in place schemes to help our customers retain
their benefts under their policies with time to help them manage cash fow during this period. We also saw a shift in customer behavior moving towards digital. Hence, the timely launch in Laos of our app, Pulse by Prudential, a free to use digital ecosystem that empowers Laotians to live a healthier and meaningful lifestyle by leveraging the community, health, and wealth features on the app as well as access our bite-size solutions to address their fnancial protection needs.
Prudential also values our culture of continuous innovation. Recently, a group of employees came together to brainstorm on what we could do to support the community. The team designed and launched a Covid-19 Care Fund which provided aid and benefts to those infected with Covid-19.
People were able to register for this fund through the Pulse app. The fund also attracted interest from other organizations who joined hands with us to promote this fund, such as ChildFund Laos, GoTeddy, Loca, and the Lao Red Cross. Collectively we were able to register over 10,000 Lao people into this support fund.
By continuously innovating in line with our values, Prudential has proven itself to be a true friend of the Lao people.

Mick ShippenGGateway towns, as the moniker implies, are often overlooked; hurriedly passed through en route elsewhere. In the case of Pakse, however, the sage advice is “draw your breaks”. Take a leisurely day or two to discover this fast-growing town. A bustling commercial center with a strong Vietnamese infuence, Pakse sits at the confuence of the Mekong and the Xe Don, from which it gets its name (Pakse means “mouth of the river”).
Established as an administrative outpost by the French in 1905, history buffs will enjoy wandering the town’s streets in search of fne examples of colonial-era architecture, albeit that most is desperately in need of restoration. Pakse is also home to Dao Heuang, the biggest fresh market in Laos. Hire a scooter or a tuk-tuk and excursions can be made to Phu Salao temple where a monumental golden Buddha looks serenely out across the town below.
A few kilometers north, you can see stonemasons at work at Wat Chomphet and silk weavers at Ban Saphay. Fifty kilometers further east, but still manageable as
a day trip, is Paksong and the Bolaven Plateau. The higher altitude and cool climate here made it the perfect location for coffee plantations during French rule.
When Laos gained independence, the industry fell into decline but in recent years has enjoyed a welcome revival. Today, hundreds of villagers tend coffee bushes and there are also several large plantations. If time doesn’t allow for a side trip to Paksong, you can sample local brews in Pakse at the artsy RYN Coffee (facebook.com/ ryncoffeepakse) or buy bags of beans to take home from Laos Food & Beverage Products Souvenir on Street 12. Check into the downtown Pakse Hotel (hotelpakse.com) on Street 5 and you can start your evening with a rooftop sunset cocktail before heading on to Khamfong foating restaurant for dinner. Just 33 km south of Pakse is the sleepy riverside town of Champasak. The main attraction here is Wat Phou.
Located a further 12 km from the town, the UNESCO World Heritage temple dates from the sixth century but was part of the Khmer Empire between the tenth and thirteenth centuries.
Once known as a hotspot for backpackers, southern Laos has come of age as a destination for cultured travelers in search of history, beautiful scenery, and luxurious riverside resorts.
The sage advice is draw your breaks.
As one of the most signifcant historical sites in Laos, it is an essential feature on any travel itinerary. The impressive hillside temple complex was constructed on several levels and after ascending the steep stone stairs, visitors can enjoy fantastic views across the plains. Champasak offers a choice of excellent accommodation including the charming 14-room Residence Bassac (residencebassac. com), and La Folie (lafolie-laos.com).
Continuing 120 km further south, the mighty Mekong widens, creating an area of islands and sandbars known as Si Phan Don, the 4,000 Islands. Varying in size with the seasonal rise and fall of the Mekong, many are uninhabited.
The larger islands with accommodation are Don Khong, Don Det, and Don Khon, the location of the famous Li Phi Falls. Also known as Tat Somphamit, the falls are a series of violent rapids located on the western edge of the island and is a spectacular sight at the height of the rainy season in September. The Li Phi Falls are used by local fshermen who risk life and limb building large wooden traps here. Many of the waterways around the 4,000 Islands are more peace-
ful than the Li Phi Falls and can be explored by kayak. Don Det and Don Khon are connected by a bridge built by the French for a narrow-gauge railway.
Although the line has long since been removed, an old rusting train can still be seen here. Throughout the islands, life moves forward at a slower pace and there are many interesting temples and villages to visit by bicycle. In the waters further south, boats can also be hired for trips to try to spot the endangered Irrawaddy dolphin.

Lao Thiao LaoImagine rolling green hills, the scent of pine trees, cool mountain air, archeological mysteries, strong proud ethnic cultures, and you don’t even need a passport to travel there! Be amazed by the unique natural and historical wonders found in Xieng Khouang.
This fat area was settled in ancient times by unknown people, then became the Phouan Kingdom in the 1300s, later falling under Vietnamese, Siamese, and then French rule, before being heavily bombed during the Indochina War, Xieng Khouang is a place where the past intermingles with the present.
An aerial view of Phou Viengkham on the outskirts of the cityXieng Khouang’s most iconic feature is the Plain of Jars. There are over 100 jar sites scattered around the province. No one knows exactly who built them or why. Some researchers say they were burial sites, while local legend says they were liquor cups made by a giant king. Visit them and make your own conclusions.
Defnitely one of the best museums in Laos. This well-curated museum explains the region’s unique ethnic groups. Also, get a look at the glorious ancient and tragic modern history of Xieng Khouang. Everyone will learn something new in this beautiful place.
At a spot where the forest opens up and clear water tumbles down over rocky tiers, Kha Waterfall is a charming area to visit and enjoy a swim and the cooler temperatures of this jungle area. It is a little diffcult to get to but well worth a visit.
Xieng Khouang Provincial MuseumThese two large stupas stand on hills overlooking Meuang Khoun. According to legend, That Foun contained ashes of the Buddha and That Chomphet was crowned with a jewel on its spire. Unfortunately, these were lost during an invasion in the 19th century.
Lao Skyway has fights from Vientiane to Xieng Khouang 5 days per week.
Meuang Khoun was the former capital of the Phouan Kingdom and was nearly destroyed by American bombs during the Indochina War. The 600-year-old Wat Phiavat was bombed during this time, but the Buddha image inside remained miraculously intact.
This beautiful emerald pool of water is heated by geothermal activity. The water is piped off into baths and public pools nearby. Locals believe in the healing and medicinal properties of the minerals in this water. Take a dip and feel refreshed.
Currently, Laos is a country facing issues with the COVID-19 pandemic. Enacting measures to contain the spread and staunch enforcement by offcials has kept infection numbers down. It is important that we strictly follow advice and measures to help the country in this trying time.
Lao Skyway places high value on protection during this crisis through its contribution to society. At 9 am on 18 May, the Lao Skyway Labor Union organized
a handover of equipment and important protective gear used in combatting the pandemic to the medical staff at the 150 Bed Friendship Hospital. This donation, lead by Mr. Panthavy Sisongkham, Commercial Director at Lao Skyway, and received by Dr. Vangnakhone Dittaphong, Deputy Director of the 150 Bed Friendship Hospital. The donation consisted of anti-bacterial gel, facemasks, gloves, and bottled water valued at 20 million kip.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, which has caused many infections and deaths throughout the world, one thing that will assist everyone to help control the spread, create immunity, and protect the most vulnerable is to vaccinate against COVID-19
Recently, all of the staff of Lao Skyway have received two doses of vaccine. The frst dose was administered in mid-May and the second was given on 17 June.
At this time, the airline has been able to resume services throughout the country.
Vaccination is the best tool to prevent the spread of this disease. We salute those who have vaccinated against this virus and encourage everyone to get vaccinated as soon as possible in order to return to normal conditions.
Lao Skyway is ready to take all of our passengers to their beautiful destinations in Laos.
Bask in the beauty of nature with these fresh waterfalls that plummet over a steep cliff.
