DESAFIOS URBANOS’12 ARCHITECTURE COMPETITION 1ST PRIZE This competition calls for ideas for the rehabilitation of the Fábrica do Cavalinho, located in one of the main axis of the city of Guimarães. Evidently a more deep reflection is needed regarding the place of this type of abandoned structures in the urban fabric of today, searching to set the tone of the emergent strategies of this type of rehabilitation. How to use this space of opportunities and how to integrate it, not only in an urban developing strategy, but also in an economic and social standpoint? How can this building respond to new needs and be adapted to new uses? For his structure we propose a “Creative Factory”: creative factories are born from the reuse of deactivated industrial structures, because they offer a great potential for adaptation and appropriation. They also offer flexible and ample spaces at low prices. In other words, they can function as creative laboratories that promote innovation and investigation of new products and practices. For these reasons, the proposal aims to create a single space where creation, production and promotion of new products can take place altogether. The choices regarding the proposed programme try to maintain the idea of the old functions of the factory, keeping the collective industrial memory of the city of Guimarães, and, at the same time, responding to the social needs of the present. If, on the one hand, a creative factory seeks to stimulate the social, economic and urban development of the community, on the other hand, it maintains the industrial aura of the existent structure. Formally the proposal is in itself a mediation between the existent structure and the new strategies for its rehabilitation. In this sense, the proposed demolitions were always to clarify and dignify the existing building, at the same time that gives it a new character. Thus, the proposal respects and outlines the structure of the building as it is, enhancing its flexibility, and gives this building the capacity to always remain present in the city’s life.

SAN FRANCISCO FIRE DEPARTMENT HEADQUARTERS COMPETITION The main concetp is focused on lifting all the non-operative program, as one frees the circulation and visual communication on the platform level, while creating an interstitial space that becomes the ideal operation area. The free circulation at the platform level allows a fast access from the equipment and outfit core to all the emergency vehicle exits, optimizing the dispatch procedures. Two vertical circulation cores allow a fast access from the entrances to the locker rooms on the first floor, and to the lounge area, allowing a fast entry into operation. The third vertical circulation core creates a connection between the training areas of the first and ground floor. Finally, the structure of the building works as a suspended metal box, resting in a set of beams with minimal supporting points, in an allusion to the imagery of gantry crane structures.

COMMUNITY CENTER The situation of designing a public building and the public space around it, creates the opportunity to explore an architectural vocabulary valid for both. Several platforms, designed as modulationsof the ground, open possibilities of being in the public space and configure both the building’s exterior image and it’s main interior spaces and circulations. On the north side, the building, one of the platfoms and a public route intertwine. That is where the entrance is opened, with two different doors. The one on the ground level gives access to the multi-purpose room. The one on the upper floor, after a gradual climbing through the platform, gives access to the activities rooms and to the administration area. On the ground level, one of the platforms and a built volume (both sheltering support spaces) configure the main interior space, the multipurpose room. Large transparencies to and from the exterior, as well as the kitchen and service counter, habilitate it to perform as parties or dinning hall; sun-shading curtains, together with steping floor and ceiling that design an informal stage, make it attractive for small shows in which the community participates. On the upper floor, the rooms lign up around a longitudinal lobby and a raised south-facing courtyard. As opposed to the prevailing character in the ground floor, the attention here is focused on a protected exterior space for activities, leisure or resting of the users. The roof reliefs and saliencies show the outline composition of the building, looking forward to be seen from the neighbouring higher buildings.

HOUSE BENEDITA & MICHAEL This house, from the turn of the twentieth century, is one of many, which, define the housing typology of Porto, of this period. Very heavy granite walls decorated with masonry work and painted tiles, and with solid wood interior structures covered with wood elements and plaster. The clients proposed to us its rehabilitation and also the incorporation of their design studio, all done in a tight budget. Since the internal structure was still suitable for this rehabilitation, minor demolitions were made, mainly for opening spaces to allow more generous rooms, and more natural light to fill in. However, the demolition works revealed the advanced deterioration of the east elevation and the roof, which had to be completely redone. In the case of the east elevation and the skylight of the main staircase a new design was made. The plaster ceilings were renewed and all of the wood elements recovered, and also all windows and openings were replaced with new frames.
