Dear La Pietra ‘Ohana, On behalf of the Board of Trustees, faculty, staff and students of La Pietra – Hawaii School for Girls, I would like to say mahalo to all of you for your collective support over the past year. We are truly inspired by your commitment to our students who, with your support, will go on to lead a life of achievement. Fiscal Year 2016–17 has been one filled with great change and promise, with the retirement of Board of Trustees Chair Alice F. Guild and Head of School Mahina Eleneki Hugo. As we look toward the future and all that it brings, I am excited to introduce, former Vice Chair, Wendy B. Crabb as Chair of the Board of Trustees and myself, Dr. Josh Watson, as Head of School. Following the examples set by Alice and Mahina, both Wendy and I will bring all of our knowledge and passion for the school to the task of leading it into the next phase of its life. I welcome all of you with a history with the school, a concern for its welfare, and a belief in the power of girls’ education to visit us and see all the different ways that your contributions enhance the lives of the young women who will be tomorrow’s leaders. In this annual report, we wish to acknowledge and celebrate the impact of the many individuals, organizations, and groups who have come together in support of the young women of La Pietra in the 2016–17 year. Through very generous gifts from family, friends, and community partners, we’ve been able to provide professional development opportunities to our faculty and staff, to take care of much needed campus renovations, and to provide a robust and unique learning environment to all our students. We would also like to take this opportunity to extend our sincere gratitude to the Trailsend Foundation and the Bromley family for their exceptional commitment to La Pietra. These special gifts, along with those of all the other donors recognized in this report, have fortified our development efforts, allowing us to continue to provide the best education and experience for all of our students. Together, we all contribute to making our school stronger, as the following pages attest. In a recent letter thanking donors, former Board Chair Alice F. Guild states, “I would like to express my deepest appreciation for all who have made contributions of time, expertise, money and love over the long life of our beloved school.” I know you will join me in sharing that appreciation, and in the recognition of all the ways that our supporters make our school beloved. Thank you for supporting the mission and vision of La Pietra – Hawaii School for Girls. Sincerely,

Dr. Josh Watson

WHY DO I GIVE? DONOR PROFILE :

Chase Offield & The Offield Family Foundation A generous leadership gift from Chase Offield and the Offield Family Foundation was made in the Winter of 2016. Chase Offield is the father of La Pietra student, Capri Offield ’22. He is currently the Director of the Offield Center for Billfish Studies and The Catalina Seabass Fund. Both non-profit organizations help fund the science and research of Billfish and White Seabass. He spends a lot of time on the ocean fishing and deploying satellite tags in billfish all over the world. Mr. Offield is grateful for the impact that La Pietra has on Capri and wants to ensure that the school continues to perpetuate its vision and values to future students. What has surprised you most about Capri?

Capri’s confidence has really grown since she started attending La Pietra. Capri used to be fairly shy and in the three years she has been at La Pietra I see a much stronger, self-assured young lady. How has La Pietra impacted Capri?

The small class size and attention that the students get from the faculty has been very beneficial. Middle school can be a tough time for kids and I think that the positive nature that La Pietra promotes is very conducive to creating a comfortable environment for the students. Capri looks forward to school and seeing her friends each day, which is a testament to the school. Why do you give to La Pietra?

I’m so happy to see the impact that La Pietra has had on Capri and want to do my part to ensure that the school continues to flourish for future generations. What would you tell someone that is thinking about donating to La Pietra?

Making a donation towards the growth and education of young women is as noble a cause as you can find.

Parent Giving Parents provide the foundation for our students’ success, both now and in the future. We truly appreciate the efforts, generosity, and support of all our families with their time, talents and treasures. This year, parents once again demonstrated their commitment and belief in La Pietra with strong participation in the annual fund campaign. During the Annual Plant A Seed Campaign that was held from October 1 to October 31, 2016, a friendly competition took place amongst classes. Congratulations to the Class of 2023 for winning with 100% participation! In addition, all students whose parents participated in the challenge were entered to win an Apple Watch. La Pietra Board Member, Randi Silleck Conway ’69 alongside previous Interim Director of Advancement, Kanoe Vares, presented the Apple Watch to winner, Gigi Graves ’22! The campaign concluded with 77% overall parent participation and raised over $18,000. Mahalo to all the parents who participated in the annual campaign. A special Mahalo to the grade level captains for the efforts in helping to promote the campaign with the parent community.

La Pietra’s Legacy Brick Garden In 2014, during La Pietra’s 50th anniversary year, the Advancement team decided to honor La Pietra’s 50 years with a special landmark, a brick garden.

up with this garden, Alice Guild. I love the idea for the girls who attend La Pietra who ask about the garden and be told about the wonderful person it was dedicated to.”

The Advancement Committee Chair, Randy Silleck Conway ’69 says, “We would sell bricks and find a special place on campus to place them. The process was a long one, but well worth the wait.” During the process, the Board of Trustees decided to honor Board Chair, Alice F. Guild.

Pastor Kelekona Bishaw from Kamehameha Schools joined the reception to bless the garden. “It’s [Alice’s Garden] a dedication and blessing for a purpose and the purpose is legacy. The purpose is to help all those that will come and all those that have been part of La Pietra understand the work, sacrifices and resources that are necessary to keep things going,” said Bishaw.

“I can’t recall the exact circumstances, but it was sort of all at once we (Board of Trustees) decided it would be perfect that we honor Alice and then got the inspiration to do Alice’s Garden,” said Conway. The bricks became a popular hit when Guild announced she would generously match the contribution of anyone who bought a brick for a certain amount at HOOPLA. Planning and preparations continued over the next two years. Over 100 bricks were engraved and the brick campaign raised over $210,000. The project was completed on December 7, 2016 and a special brick garden reception was held on campus on January 19, 2017. Board members, alumnae, and friends joined to honor ‘Alice’s Garden’ and the school’s 50 years of educating young women. At the reception, Conway stated, “We honor the person who inspired all of us to come

“This is so special because I’ve had such a long association with the school and it is sadly coming to an end. One of the things that makes this so special for me is that this area was originally the home of my great grandfather. Their house was situated at the corner of Poni Moi Road and Diamond Head Road and this was all part of his property,” said Guild. “Alice will live on forever at this special beautiful corner of La Pietra,” said Conway. The garden is adjacent to the Great Lawn, near the gymnasium. The brick garden pathway is lined with lime trees and leads to a stone bench flanked by trees.
