Sharing Annual Report FY 2012
LA RABIDA CHILDRENʼS HOSPITAL
It is Good to Share Last year was rich with opportunities to SHARE the mission and expertise of La Rabida Children’s Hospital, Chicago’s pediatric specialty hospital and an icon that has stood for more than 115 years. In Fiscal Year 2012 (FY12), La Rabida continued partnerships with many medical centers to strengthen core services. Yet, the virtues that make it special are echoed in a favored poem All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten. Author Robert Fulghum explores “sand box themes” that form valuable life lessons, the first of which is a guide for us at La Rabida: SHARE everything. We continued our quest to SHARE excellence in pediatric healthcare last year and hosted national and international speakers, interdisciplinary collaborations and reached out to peers and parents with training and education. Our Board of Trustees and senior leadership team SHARED a collective vision of excellence in healthcare reform by streamlining costs with more efficient care and rolling out a $16 million La Rabida outpatient expansion project. More than 290 dedicated volunteers SHARED an impressive 12,592 hours of time and talent rocking babies, playing board games and greeting visitors, among other tasks. The Chicago Tribune took notice in May and featured the commitment of a mother-daughter volunteer team. Showing an unprecedented commitment to the hospital, donors last year SHARED support of our programs and helped seed the capital campaign. Finally, in these pages, we introduce La Rabida patients who SHARED their joy, spirit and happy endings, serving as a constant reminder of why since 1896 we have done what we do to ensure Chicago’s most vulnerable children receive the care they need and deserve. Sincerely, Brenda J. Wolf, President and CEO John Gyann, Chair of the Board of Trustees
Sharing Knowledge & Expertise In FY12, La Rabida’s experts reached out to hundreds of peers, patients and their families to share expertise in emerging treatment areas, new technology and disease management.
Diabetes Education
Collaborating for Unique Bracing
Defining Medical Trauma
When it comes to managing a disease like diabetes, education is key, and La Rabida experts have a lock on it. As the only Chicago-area pediatric diabetes program certified by the American Diabetes Association (ADA), our experts set the bar for keeping kids healthy and out of the hospital.
In FY12, La Rabida’s Rehabilitation team, led by Audrey Yasukawa MOT, OTR/L, CKTI, hosted a conference of experts from across the country, including the world renowned Cleveland Clinic, as well as England, to train on a unique method of bracing pediatric patients. The two-day course brought together orthotists, occupational and physical therapists to learn how the Dynamic Movement Orthosis (DMO, a Lycra-based orthotic garment) -- can meet a variety of patient needs. The orthotic is custom-made for each child to provide compression and / or directional pull to help pediatric patients achieve their goals of improved alignment, posture and functionality.
National medical trauma experts from Cancer Center of nationally ranked The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and elsewhere collaborated with five La Rabida experts in FY12 to help define the evolving discipline and explore treatments during the hospital’s Perspectives in Care conference, Medical Trauma in Childhood.
In addition to teaching patients and their families, diabetes experts in 2012 began teaching Chicago Public School volunteers to help students manage their diabetes. More than 400 state-mandated delegated care aides were trained last year. Also, in FY12, La Rabida’s advanced practice nurses began a mentorship program, jointly sponsored by national groups such as the ADA to help nurses become certified diabetes educators and improve access to much needed diabetes self-management education.
Yasukawa, chief of La Rabida’s Occupational Therapy section, is a sought after workshop leader, lecturer and author.
The group, hosted by La Rabida experts, defined medical trauma as the child’s and family’s experience of scary, painful, and/or highly distressing medical events and their responses to them. In the one-day course, discussion points included consequences of medical trauma and improving quality of care for children who have experienced it. Participants learned about providing traumainformed care, “verbal” first aid and using a pediatric medical traumatic stress toolkit to assess and treat children.
Remarkable
Rayshon Eight-year-old Rayshon experienced multiple traumas when he was shot in the head Christmas morning 2011. Here is what can happen when a team of rehabilitation experts inspires the spirit of a child. After the shooting, Rayshon was stabilized at the University of Chicago Medicine Comer Children’s Hospital. He arrived a few months later at La Rabida with paralysis on his right side, and no speech or motor skills. He used a feeding tube for nourishment. After a month-long intensive inpatient rehabilitation stay, the little boy with a bright smile made a “miraculous recovery,” according to Lisa Thornton, M.D., medical director, pediatric rehabilitation, who led his team of interdisciplinary therapists. He also met with a staff psychologist as part of the hospital’s team approach to holistic care. The experts, Rayshon and his mother Rachel were interviewed by local TV stations, print outlets and news radio stations about his incredible turnaround. Rayshon’s most immediate wish at the time: get back to playing baseball.

During a cool June night, Chicago White Sox Infielder Orlando Hudson and the team played host to Rayshon, his family and Team La Rabida, who watched the Southside legends beat the Seattle Mariners. Ebony.com later reported Rayshon had returned to school and the baseball field. Another homerun for Team La Rabida.
Sharing Vision Building Better Care The future of health care resides in the delivery of services that prevent hospitalization. La Rabida’s new $16 million outpatient project positions us well to offer patients comprehensive services that allows these children to access the hospital’s award-winning medical home model. In FY12, our Board of Trustees approved the expansion and renovation work to meet the increasingly complex medical needs of our 9,000 patients and their families. The one-story outpatient clinic will house 18 exam rooms in a 13,000-square-foot building. The current, aging infrastructure will also be updated. The larger space will allow for improved accessibility and enhance interdisciplinary, family centered treatment, La Rabida’s hallmark approach to care. Embracing the entire family has earned the hospital both local and national praise for its medical home model to provide family centered care, which also is a highlight of health care reform. The American Academy of Pediatrics defines a medical home as “continuous, comprehensive, accessible, family-centered, coordinated, compassionate, and culturally effective to every child and adolescent.” Construction on the new center will be completed in early 2014.
Sanel’s Sharing Garden Sanel’s story could easily be a sad one about a debilitating condition, language barriers and a foreign culture. But it isn’t. Instead, the 15-year-old has an inspiring story of hope and, most of all, a relentless spirit. Sanel has a condition known as spinal atrophy that creates muscular degeneration over time. Early last year, the genetic defect created breathing difficulty and Sanel had to be placed on a ventilator. He and his parents, both deaf Bosnian refugees, needed extensive training to manage his complex medical needs at home. Despite the obstacles, Sanel whizzed through his five-month stay – both figuratively and literally in his motorized wheelchair. CEO Brenda Wolf even named him “Gardener in Chief” after the teen asked if he could plant a garden behind the hospital. La Rabida’s staff and nurses became his extended family with whom he shared his smile, spirit, and eventually fruits and vegetables grown on the hospital’s grounds. The garden was reminiscent of the vegetables his mom used to grow back home. “Sanel taught us all how not to dwell on circumstances but to seize each day and make the most of it,” Wolf later reflected.
Sharing
Success Gold Standard • La Rabida Children’s Hospital and Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago offer Chicago’s only pediatric diabetes program certified by the American Diabetes Association. Lurie Children’s was the only hospital in Illinois ranked by U.S. News & World Report in 2012 as one of the Best Children’s Hospital’s in diabetes and endocrinology. Anita Swamy, M.D., medical director, and Jennifer Miller, M.D., both are on Lurie Children’s staff as endocrinologists.
Fore! the Kids • More than 200 scramblers teed up on a perfect summer day to raise a record amount of money for the hospital. Chicago’s Harborside International Golf Course played host to supporters, who were treated to a live auction, cocktail reception and dinner buffet. The event was the most successful golf outing in the hospital’s history.
New Leader • Blazing a trail in physicianto-physician outreach, Walid Maalouli, M.D., FAAP, is the hospital’s first chief medical officer. Maalouli comes to us from Children’s Hospitals & Clinics of Minnesota, where he was the founder and medical director of the hospitalist division.
Clear Support • Media giant Clear Channel Media + Entertainment Chicago and La Rabida formed a partnership in FY12 that brought unprecedented media exposure for the hospital among 4.9 million Clear Channel listeners.
Nearly two million hospital-acquired infections claim roughly 100,000 lives and add $45 billion in costs. Interlandi, J. Scientific America. Hospital-Acquired Infections: Beating Back the Bugs. Retrieved May 14, 2011, from http://
Handwashing • Hand hygiene is one of the fastest and easiest ways to reduce the number of hospital acquired infections (HAI). In FY12 La Rabida’s leaders launched a program to enhance the hospital’s efforts to improve quality and patient outcomes. “Wash In, Wash Out” encourages employees to clean their hands, using soap and water or hand sanitizer, before entering and after leaving each patient’s cabin. “Watchers” ensure staff compliance. The hospital’s most recent HAI rate was 3.8 per 1,000 patient days well below the national average.
Corporate Mix Going Paperless paperless orders as the final step in the electronic medical record system. The new system improves patient safety, enhances care quality, increases efficiency, and cost savings.
• La Rabida’s newly established Corporate Advisory Board (CAB) is a group of emerging corporate leaders from major Chicago companies including Magellan Corporation, Bank of America and Hillshire Brands. The board is committed to increasing awareness and financial support for La Rabida. CAB raised funds for the hospital in FY12 by hosting several afterwork mixers throughout the year.
Rama
Sharing a Happy Ending Rama shared her infectious joy during her inpatient stay and outpatient visits throughout FY12. She came to us from war torn Syria, following a complicated surgery to place a “halo” around her head to correct her spine and neck. Born with the rare congenital Goldenhar syndrome, Rama and her family came to this country seeking medical help. Following 15 surgeries, Rama wore the halo surrounding her head for six months. When she arrived at La Rabida for rehab, she sat in a wheelchair, unable to walk, talk or eat. Her mom said Rama hated being in a wheelchair and “felt ugly.” Last December, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel looked past the halo into her eyes and inspired a smile. Three months later, the halo came off and Rama wrote the mayor a letter. “Now, I am running, jumping and smiling.” Happy endings.

Sharing Time & Talents
Volunteers
Week after week for several months in 2012, the friendly face of a loyal volunteer peered out from La Rabida’s Facebook page as part of a social media profile series. Volunteer Spotlights featured those who generously give of their time to share a storybook tale with a patient, a kind word with a visitor or critical homework help with a student. Those profiled were part of an elite group who have given at least five years of service to the hospital. One of them has been giving of his time for 25 years. In all, 292 volunteers gave a combined total of 12,592 hours of their time in FY12.
