DEAR FRIENDS OF LA RABIDA Dear Friends, At La Rabida, we share a universal, steadfast belief in possibilities—possibilities for the future of every child and family who comes through the doors of La Rabida, possibilities for innovations in healthcare, and possibilities to grow the family-centered and comprehensive model of care that sets La Rabida apart. By providing high-quality healthcare to children with special needs and chronic conditions, regardless of their family’s ability to pay, we raise the bar in healthcare, and in doing so, we raise possibilities for a lifetime for thousands of bright, young futures year after year. We provide care for children of all ages with a holistic focus that allows for us to meet medical, social and behavioral needs at every stage of childhood. La Rabida provides specialized care for the most vulnerable infants through our neonatal intensive care step-down program, Baby Steps…Because every child deserves the possibility of a healthy start in life. We provide rehabilitation for children who have undergone surgery, survived various forms of trauma or who live with disabilities such as cerebral palsy, so that they can gain confidence and independence…Because every child deserves the possibility of strength for a fulfilling life. Our tutoring program supports our patients and their siblings in their schooling, while our team of devoted social workers, case managers and care coordinators tirelessly support and connect the kids’ parents and caregivers to key resources…Because every child deserves the possibility of an ally in health. We teach our teenagers how to manage their conditions like sickle cell disease or diabetes, so they can lead full, enriching lives…Because every child deserves the possibility of health education and self-advocacy. KATHRYN SOARS For Kathryn, 17; successfully managing her chronic illness has helped her touch the sky. Kathryn has a self-proclaimed, life-long dream of becoming a pilot, “I’ve wanted to fly since I first set foot in a plane at age three.” At age 11, Kathryn was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes; due to FAA regulations, insulin-dependent type 1 diabetics are limited in what type of pilots’ license they can acquire. Pilots also need to demonstrate diligence in managing their diabetes. Kathryn’s resilience, coupled with her drive to put her health first has taken her to new heights. Kathryn applied for a scholarship through the not-for-profit organization, Able Flight; Able Flight helps people with disabilities pursue flight and aviation career training. She received a full scholarship from Able Flight to Purdue University, where she earned her sport flight pilot’s license. Dr. Anita Swamy, Kathryn’s doctor at La Rabida is incredibly proud of Kathryn as a patient and a person. She described Kathryn as, “a role model and symbol of resilience.” She stated that when it comes to her care, Kathryn willingly took on challenges, proactively found resources, and made every effort to manage her diabetes.
PHOENIX SMILES La Rabida specializes in the inpatient transitional care of children with varying diagnoses and conditions who are dependent on technology such as oxygen or feeding tubes. In every case, our goal is to help advance each patient to the least-dependent condition possible, so he or she can go on to lead the fullest life. Phoenix (pictured) was born with a cleft lip and a cleft palate that caused respiratory and feeding complications. He spent several months at another medical center where he received a tracheostomy and a G-tube so he could receive adequate nutrition, and he received corrective surgery on his lip. After surgery, Phoenix boarded the S.S. La Rabida, so his parents could learn from our care team how to use his technology once he returns home. Though Phoenix’ loving mother and father live several hours away, they visited their son daily and quickly became proficient in his trach and G-tube care. Their spirited, comforting visits—which often included dance parties in his cabin—kept Phoenix smiling throughout his stay.
COLIN SAVES LIVES As a child, Colin visited La Rabida for both inpatient and outpatient asthma care. He aspired to be a firefighter, but he knew his respiratory condition could prevent his dream from becoming a reality. Despite the odds, Colin is now a firefighter and paramedic. He credits the care he received at La Rabida as the source of his determination to succeed. On the job, Colin acknowledges that, “other people’s lives depend on me.” That philosophy carries over in all aspects of his life, and he is just as passionate about making a difference in the lives of others. This year, Colin returned to La Rabida to donate boxes of books for our patients. Even though Colin regularly exhibits extensive heroism in his career, he maintains that the children of La Rabida are the real heroes, “The patients of La Rabida are the bravest people I have ever seen.”
DEMARI MAKES A SPLASH Demari, 8, benefits greatly from the relaxing effects of aquatic therapy at La Rabida. Demari has cerebral palsy and recently underwent orthopedic surgery to give him better alignment in his legs. He recently began working with La Rabida’s rehabilitation team, so he can return home with more strength, balance and comfort. Ever since his surgery, he has experienced heightened anxiety and muscle spasms in his legs, both of which are greatly eased by the therapeutic pool. Along with his physical therapist Jenny, Demari has regular sessions in the pool to practice walking in the water, pushing off the walls, kicking and moving with less fear. “It’s easier for him to move more freely in the water, which helps control his spasms,” Jenny said.
OUR HIGHLIGHTS
Hospital earns national recognition This year, La Rabida Children’s Hospital earned its third recognition from the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) for its patient-centered medical home (PCMH) programs. La Rabida’s medical home offers high-quality, primary care services for children with complex conditions, cerebral palsy or those who are technology-dependent. The hospital earned a Level 3 score, which is the highest designation, and will retain the accreditation for three years. La Rabida received the designation for its proven ability to promote higher quality of care while improving patient outcomes. To qualify, La Rabida had to meet the PCMH standards, which align with those of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and other prominent medical provider organizations. More services for children exposed to trauma La Rabida has remained committed to growth in order to meet the urgent needs of the community. This year, La Rabida Children’s Advocacy Center expanded its operations to serve more youth in the south suburbs. La Rabida Children’s Advocacy Center now offers a wider age range for those the center treats, has expanded criteria for referrals and increased caseloads more than 200 percent. The center plays a vital role for children who have been sexually abused or affected by other forms of trauma and violence. At the center, professionals interview young victims to gather credible testimony that authorities can use to prosecute offenders. The center also refers children to other mental health agencies and other resources to help youth cope with traumatic experiences. Starlight grant a recipe for joy This spring, La Rabida hosted a “Day of Joy” to celebrate a $200,000 grant from the Joy in Childhood Foundation and the Starlight Children’s Foundation. La Rabida will be the first recipient of a Starlight Site. The grant will provide funding to build a functional, family kitchen in the Child Life pavilion. The kitchen will be a valuable resource to help kids learn life skills, build confidence, and provide occupational therapy through hands-on interaction and play. Children with nutritional needs and their families can learn about healthy eating habits, proper nutrition and try out healthy recipes to take home. Keith, and his mom, Javaze, are one of the many families looking forward to the Starlight Site family kitchen. Keith, who has cerebral palsy, is looking forward to using a kitchen that will accommodate his wheelchair. The renovations will provide accessibility for Keith and all children at La Rabida. The funding also provides kids at La Rabida with Starlight Brave Gowns, which are high-quality, comfortable and brightly-colored gowns for children to wear while undergoing treatment. Extra love for our kids This year, Hubbard Radio partnered with Caputo’s Fresh Market to host a valentine drive for our patients, and the results were nothing short of astounding. Valentines were made especially for kids at La Rabida by people from all over Chicago. The cards were delivered to La Rabida for Valentine’s Day. Children on the inpatient unit had their rooms decorated while outpatients each took home a bag full of cards. The extra love continued to grow this year when La Rabida’s volunteer program expanded with the brand-new, Extra TLC program. The program, featured on NBC’s “Making a Difference” segment, designates a volunteer to an infant on the inpatient unit who can benefit from bonding with a caregiver. Volunteers spend several hours of one-on-one time each week caring for and nurturing La Rabida’s youngest patients to promote bonding, communication and learning when external circumstances prevent families from visiting as often as they would like.

La Rabida is a special place, not only because of what we do, but also because of who we are. For our patients and families, our caring and compassionate volunteers are an integral part of the La Rabida experience. From our after-school tutors to our nursing volunteers, there is no shortage of generous spirits who make a difference in the lives of our kids.
From July 1, 2016 through June 30, 2017, 196 volunteers gave 9,457 hours of service to La Rabida. Our volunteers’ generous gifts of time, cheer and goodwill help smooth the way for our patients and their families each and every day. Without our dedicated volunteers, we could not fulfill our mission. For that, we are forever grateful.
