FOCUS La Rabida 2010 Annual Report

Focus on: A Better Future for Chicago’s Kids

Fiscal Year 2010 was a time of continuing change, growth and preparation – all critical in our vision for the future of La Rabida Children’s Hospital.

By fulfilling the mission we have maintained since 1896 – serving Chicago’s most vulnerable children and their families – the hospital has been able to expand its outreach in the past year. Our longtime focus on caring for patients with chronic illnesses, developmental disabilities, and those who have suffered trauma has given our medical staff unsurpassed expertise and helped us serve more patients. In addition to our longtime partnership with University of Chicago, the commencement of our alliance with Children’s Memorial Hospital, has also allowed us to provide vitally important physicians-supervised care to inpatients around the clock. Referrals from these hospitals helped boost outpatient visits, along with inpatient census once construction of a 12-bed inpatient unit was completed in fiscal year 2010 (FY10). These relationships, as well as others, drive our efforts to become the pediatric specialty care provider of choice to other top children’s hospitals in Chicago. Besides an investment in strategic partnerships, we also invested in quality enhancements such as state-of-the-art monitoring equipment to keep our precious patients safe, and enable greater efficiencies for our medical staff. As the nation began to recover from the resounding recession, our prudent investments rebounded last fiscal year. FY10 was indeed a good year for La Rabida. Going forward, the guidance of our Board of Trustees gives us confidence to continue exploring new ways to serve more specialty care patients, creating better lives for them and their families. Sincerely, Paula Kienberger Jaudes, M.D., President and CEO Peggy Gann, Co-Chair of the Board of Trustees John G. Gyann, Co-Chair of the Board of Trustees

W hether from around the corner or around the world, La Rabida is always there for our patients and their families. An internet search led Molly and Matt Veldt from their home in Central Asia to Chicago for their young daughter’s rehabilitation.

A

“ When we traveled to Chicago after scheduling sur-

gery for our newly adopted six-year-old daughter, Sasi, to lengthen her leg tendons at another hospital, all we knew was that she would be admitted to La Rabida for a lengthy stint of physical, occupational, and speech therapy after her casts were removed. Throughout five weeks of inpatient care and three weeks as an outpatient, we were excited that Sasi, who was born with severe cerebral palsy, might possibly walk one day.

We were constantly encouraged by the superb team of friendly professionals who worked with Sasi and became our friends as they spent hours encouraging and cajoling Sasi to new levels of physical activity. We watched with awe as they brought an unbelievable amount of energy to each of Sasi’s therapy sessions. In fact, she stood on her feet (instead of her toes) for the first time under their care. Sasi loved her therapists because of their love and compassion. As a result, she worked hard and made unbelievable progress during her time at La Rabida. Equally important to us was the opportunity to learn from therapists what we can do to help Sasi in achieving her physical goals. We now have a variety of exercises we use daily with Sasi to keep her moving toward the goal of standing and walking on her own. We have raved about La Rabida to friends and family and would strongly recommend the program for any pediatric rehab patient. We feel there is no place in the entire country that could provide finer care for our daughter. ” Matt Veldt

Sasi makes 6: Matt and Molly Veldt, along with their daughter Hanna, and their adopted sons Cal and Tristan. Sasi completed the family.

M y name is Brianna, I’m 10 years old, and I live with Type 1 diabetes.

Mom had heard LOTS of good things about La Rabida - like they had great doctors and were really kid friendly. This was important to my mom and dad because diabetes was new to them, and they wanted to make sure I was happy and I got the BEST care.

member much about that day, but my mom and dad said I was going into a diabetic coma. The paramedics took me from my doctor’s office to the emergency room, then to intensive care. After a few days in the hospital, mommy and daddy were taught to give me insulin injections and we were sent home.

My mom and dad say I’m blessed to have caregivers who are as concerned about me as THEY are. My diabetes team has taught us a lot. They taught my mom and dad about carb counting and how my insulin pump works. Then they taught me! I just count the number of carbs before eating and enter it into my insulin pump. I like this better because it helps keep my sugar level right. Thanks to La Rabida, I don’t have to take shots anymore!

When I was younger, I remember my mom cried ALL the time. She was scared and worried about me, so she searched the internet and found La Rabida!

They EVEN taught me how to eat healthy so I can swim, do gymnastics, ride my bike and skate. THAT’S why I love them – even the ones who draw my blood! ”

“ I was diagnosed right before my second birthday. I don’t re-

FOCUS on our mission

Fiscal year 2010 took La Rabida’s mission of providing comprehensive, interdisciplinary, family-centered care to more of Chicago’s children. Providing top notch care to very specific groups of patients helps develop specialized expertise among our medical staff. We can focus on all the patient’s needs, offering a true “community of care,” regardless of the family’s ability to pay.

For example, a ventilator-dependent child may be hospitalized following a crisis. Once the child is well enough for discharge, the outpatient will be seen by our team of specialists representing all the medical, educational, rehabilitative and psychological aspects of care. Providers teach families to care for the child at home and give them materials to reinforce lessons learned. Working together, we nurture the well-being of the child’s body, mind and spirit. Similarly, the hospital in FY10 broadened the reach of the “medical home” concept that has been so successful with the Premier Kids program for infants and small children with medically complex conditions and/or developmental delays. This family-centered, hospital-based outpatient care, coordinated in a single place, meets the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) definition of medical home. Our focus on all of the patient’s and the family’s needs makes La Rabida a medical home away from home.

FOCUS on Excellence C ommon sense has it that the more you do some-

thing the better you get at it. That is certainly the case at La Rabida. Focusing on specific diagnoses and increasing the number of children served ensures our patients receive the highest quality of care. Building on this reputation of excellence, the hospital last year launched a strategic plan to expand our “community of care” to more children and their families. Key to that plan was successfully renewing our longtime partnership with the University of Chicago, whose pediatricians see both inpatients and outpatients in our clinics. La Rabida also continues to serve as a training site for University of Chicago medical education and training programs. Our new agreement with Children’s Memorial Hospital provides care for patients in our 5 bed treatment area, as well as those transitioning from other pediatric hospitals, around the clock. These relationships with other top pediatric hospitals bring “the best of the best” to our patients by sharing the strengths of each institution. Along with forging strategic alliances with other top pediatric institutions, the hospital is extending its stellar reputation regionally by participating in more health expos, professional conferences and symposiums. Medical staff and leadership share their expertise beyond the hospital’s four walls and learn from their peers. To remain at the top of their fields, medical staff must be knowledgeable about the latest innovations in patient care. Our Education Committee last year launched a continuing medical education (CME)

series, in conjunction with the Chicago Medical Society. The ongoing series offers pediatricians, family practitioners and pediatric nurse practitioners a chance to earn free CME credits on specialty care topics. Similarly, Case Manager Luncheons, launched in FY10, are a forum for our staff and other institutions to discuss patient-family issues and learn from each other.

The FOCUS of patient care at La Rabida has always been where there is the greatest medical need among our community’s children. For years, that focus has been on children with lifelong medical conditions, as well as those with developmental delays and victims of abuse and trauma. In FY10 we opened the South Deck Inpatient unit to meet increased need. This bright new $5 million, 12-bed inpatient wing is designed like a cruise ship. Centralized monitoring systems are key to offering the best standard of care to our medically complex, medically fragile patients. Accordingly, the hospital installed a stateof-the-art, centralized monitoring system in all inpatient rooms in FY10. Centralized monitoring allows immediate tracking of acuity changes and helps nurses respond to patients quickly and appropriately. Most kids - even when they are not well - hate to be laid up in bed. This state-of-the-art system includes a telemetry feature that allows the child to safely leave the hospital bed. Kids can work with child life specialists, attend in-house therapy sessions, catch up on schoolwork with a tutor, or just be kids. The hospital also signed an electronic medical record (EMR) conversion agreement in FY10. EMR is proven to enhance patient safety and offers greater efficiency and cost savings to the hospital. The conversion implementation is in progress.

Patients Thrive Through STRIVE La Rabida provides patients and their families with valuable resources to help them lead full lives. The latest evidence of this commitment is STRIVE, which shines a light on sickle cell disease (SCD), an incurable genetic disorder that predominantly affects African Americans. SCD causes red blood cells to become sickle shaped and block blood flow to tissues and vital organs, resulting in extended “pain episodes” that require hospitalization. Patients sometimes miss weeks of school at a time, falling behind. This disrupts social networks and causes isolation. STRIVE offers these teen patients one-on-one tutoring, mentoring, peer support, and knowledge to help them better manage their disease. Begun by Project HEALTH, a Boston nonprofit that aims to break the link between urban poverty and poor health, the program was extended to Chicago in 2007 through a partnership with University of Chicago and La Rabida. In FY10 STRIVE transitioned from Project HEALTH to Next Step (www.nextstepnet.org), which helps adolescents with chronic illnesses or cancer transition into adulthood. La Rabida also stepped up its role. Next Step now provides training, ongoing support, best practices, curriculum development, as well as evaluation and followup. The organization also helps connect

the patients with other kids nationwide who are experiencing similar challenges. University of Chicago recruits volunteer student-mentors and La Rabida identifies appropriate patients and supplies the meeting space and funding through a grant from the Chauncey and Marian D. McCormick Family Foundation. Everyone wins: Adolescents, eager for camaraderie, learn how to reach their full potential living with SCD and become selfadvocates. Tutor-mentors help prepare the students for college, and La Rabida offers a warm, nurturing environment. Although the program – the first of its kind in the Midwest – is the newest of the nation’s five STRIVE sites, some ideas proposed here have been adapted at other sites. The Highs and Lows ritual is one example. Each week patience share their “highs;” the things that have made them happy, along with the “lows.” Then mentors privately or publicly share the patients’ “highs and lows,” building empathy and trust.

FOCUS

on giving

As a private, independent, mission-oriented hospital, La Rabida provides care to children regardless of the family’s ability to pay. Most of our patients are covered by public insurance, which pays only a portion of actual cost of care. Insurance also doesn’t cover investments in quality, safety, infrastructure and other improvements. Now more than ever we depend on individuals, corporate donors, foundations and others to help fulfill our mission.
