Message from the
General Manager-Fall 2012 As the fall season celebrates the changes in the plants and weather, so too we celebrate opportunities for you and your family to experience positive changes through LARPD parks and programs. You can learn something new, improve your health and fitness, and meet new friends with any number of activities provided in this guide. We hope you celebrate change, as we do, and do something different and fun this fall with LARPD. Four years ago, our Board of Directors endorsed the California Legislature’s “Proclamation of the California Children’s Outdoor Bill of Rights.” It reads:
Every child should have the opportunity to: Discover California’s past Splash in the water Play in a safe place Camp under the stars Explore nature Learn to swim Play on a team Follow a trail Catch a fish Celebrate their heritage Your children can participate in LARPD programs and parks and engage in all of these exciting life experiences, and we encourage you to look for these opportunities in this guide. Don’t forget to reserve time and effort for your own recreation. No one else will do it for you! Lastly, I want to thank the many staff and volunteers that provide the expertise, effort, and know-how to provide these wonderful programs and facilities for you and your family. We have a great array of services and places to recreate, and it’s made possible by their hard work and commitment. Enjoy your fall!

No matter what your age, the great outdoors is at your fingertips with LARPD’s open space parks. In Livermore’s own backyard are beautiful, natural parks such as Sycamore Grove Park, Holdener Park and Brushy Peak Regional Preserve. LARPD park rangers wear many hats to help maintain these natural spaces as well as offer fun and educational programs and guided hikes through the parks.
n June 10, 1947, the citizens of Livermore voted to create the Livermore Area Recreation O and Park District (originally named “Livermore Recreation District”) by an overwhelming 6-to-1 margin. Mrs. M. J. Lyons, who chaired the committee that championed the District formation, told the Livermore Herald, “It is a progressive move for the Livermore Valley.” Celebrating 65 years of stewardship this year, LARPD continues to champion parks and recreation for the Livermore area community. Grown-ups don’t have to feel left out, though – there’s plenty for them, too! Adults can join classes in fitness and dance, martial arts, health, art, music, cooking, computers and more. Whether you want to get creative or get moving, LARPD has an option for many interests.
The services LARPD provides span residents’ lifetimes, starting with the Preschool program – serving children as young as 3 months up to age 6. For the youngest children, parent-participation classes incorporate motor and social development, movement, music and play. Once reaching age 3 and 4, classes are geared toward appropriate developmental needs that include theme-related play, social experiences, making choices, independence, self-control and a positive self-image.
Kids of all ages can get in on the fun with youth recreation activities and classes. Children and teens can get involved yearround with a variety of programs including dance, gymnastics, martial arts, music, team sport classes, drama, discovering nature, art, technology, cooking and more.
Rounding out customers of all age groups, LARPD has an extensive Senior Services program, including a separate wing for older adults at the Robert Livermore Community Center. Here, seniors can attend weekday lunch or special themed luncheons, watch movies, play cards, take a yoga class or play bingo. Day excursions and exciting vacation trips are offered as well. Senior Services staff help offer services including tax preparation assistance, legal assistance and health insurance counseling.

Make a splash with LARPD aquatics, which offers open swim as well as lessons, a swim team and a water polo team, water exercise and more. The Robert Livermore Community Center Pool is open year-round for lap swim and various programs. In the summer, the center opens the Activity Pool for family fun, complete with a spiral waterslide. Also open to the public in the summer is the May Nissen Swim Center at May Nissen Park.
Parks for special interests are available, too, including both a skate park and a separate bicycle stunt course at Sunken Gardens Park. Canines aren’t forgotten – LARPD has six dog parks for them to frolic: Max Baer Park (1310 Murdell Lane), Marlin A. Pound Park (2010 Bluebell Drive), Bruno Canziani Park (South Charlotte Way), May Nissen Park (695 Rincon Ave.), Robertson Park Meadow (3200 Robertson Park Road) and Vista Meadows Park (2450 Westminster Way).
Working behind the scenes to keep our parks going, our valued Park Maintenance Staff.
Robertson Park will be seeing changes this season with the construction of two synthetic turf fields. The fields are an upgrade to sand-based fields installed in 1991. The new all-weather fields will allow for year-round use for sports such as soccer, lacrosse, football and rugby. The District is doing the $2.2 million project with support from Fusion Soccer (formerly the Livermore Youth Soccer League), which has paid forward $600,000 in future field use fees. Those interested in preserving the fields can purchase a commemorative brick through the LARPD Foundation.
