Message from the General Manager Winter 2015 How much do you pay attention to your own health? At times, it’s easier to worry about the health of others but now is a good time of year to take stock in what you are doing for yourself. LARPD, and the parks and recreation profession in general, has been helping people address their health goals for generations, and stand at the ready to help you gain those healthy “super powers!” It will be my privilege to become the President of the California Parks and Recreation Society (CPRS) in March 2015 at a ceremony in Sacramento. This 3,000member organization advocates for parks and recreation services and facilities all over the state, and is a key source of training and networking for recreation and park professionals. CPRS has long been a partner with the healthcare industry, recognizing that so many of our services and park areas promote good health to our citizens. Our programs are good for you, and less filling! You can explore this program guide to find all kinds of sports and fitness activities for you and the family to get in shape, strengthen your body and mind, and get in touch with people who have the same interests and goals. Not only do our programs meet your health needs, but our many parks and trails are also a part of your healthy exercise solution for the coming year. Adding to that variety will be Cayetano Park, at the corner of Isabel and Portola, near Las Positas College. We plan to open the park in December-January and look forward to the public enjoying the lighted synthetic turf field, basketball court, picnic areas, playground, open play turf, restrooms, parking lot and dog park. Yes, Livermore will have another dog park, which increases the number of dog parks in town to seven! Yes, we’re even concerned about the health of our furry friends as well! Enjoy the many opportunities in this guide for exercise, learning, socialization, challenge and serenity. LARPD is your prescription for good health, personal growth, and happiness in this wonderful community we get to call “home!”
Happy Holidays!
Tim Barry General Manager

This class offers a learning environment that teaches respect while allowing the children to have fun. Careful instruction in the technical and philosophical aspects of Aikido while maintaining a fun environment for learning is our goal. Sometimes the children practice their rolling, falling and coordination skills by playing games. At other times we focus on skills to foster awareness and concentration. The goal is to offer an alternative to situations involving conflict and its resolution. This is an ongoing monthly class and registration is taken anytime.

Are you ready to play some exciting and challenging music? Students divided into small ensembles of 3 to 6 members based on age, experience and instrumentation. Call for scheduling options.
The best way to learn any musical instrument is in a one-on-one setting. Performance-focused school programs simply do not focus on the intricacies of each instrument. Students learn valuable skills (like proper technique & sight reading) at their own pace, from a professional musician on their instrument. The California Park and Recreation Society (CPRS) sponsored an extensive research study asking California citizens and public officials “Why are parks important to you?” Overwhelmingly, survey respondents value parks and recreation as an essential community service. Virtually every California household (98%) reported visiting a park during the past year. Forty-two percent visited a park at least several days a week; 26% visited at least once a week, and 68% visited at least monthly. Of these, 55% go with spouse or partner, 53% with kids, 48% with family, 46% with a friend.

Play for Adults (continued) As important as play is in childhood, we often neglect its value as adults. Play is one of the our pressing human needs but society squeezes play almost completely from our lives as we get older. 4 For adults, play is important for relieving stress and making us happy. Adults who participate in at least one activity that they do just for fun helps sharpen skills, express creativity, and lets us simply “blow off some steam,” all of which benefits us body, mind and soul. 5 Seriously, most of us could use a little more play to just lighten up.
Play as Mature Adults
THE POWER OF PLAY “Play is the beating heart of humanity, something to be cherished in children and to be joyfully retained into old age.” ~Peter O’Conner
Play for Children Children enjoy playing and with good reason, play allows them to learn. Research shows that play is healthy for children and suggests pretend play is not only important for kids; it’s a crucial part of what makes all humans so smart. 1 We know play is critical to a child’s healthy development and growth. When children play, they learn to get along with others, develop fine and gross motor skills, and solve problems. 2 But play is also good for adults…
Play for Adults Research tells us that without a doubt the more we play as children and the longer we are able to maintain play in our adult lives the more successful we are. Not just in monetary terms but in our ability to keep meaningful relationships and to establish lives of value and meaning. 3
Tim Barry General Manager
As George Bernard Shaw wrote, “We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.” As 10,000 Baby Boomers become senior citizens every day, there is certainly no better time to look at the benefits of play for staying young at heart. Play boosts vitality and energy, improves resistance to disease, improves brain function, and can help ward off depression, and even helps promote a sense of well-being. Play experts suggest all of us should reclaim our inner child by setting aside regular, quality playtime. 6
Come Out and Play! As LARPD General Manager Tim Barry suggests, “Take a moment to look through this guide to find a variety of ways you can play.” LARPD has the gamut for finding your fun. From sports to individual fitness, drop-in card games to arts sessions, summer camps to science programs, LARPD has something for everyone. So just stop by and visit or join in an activity. We know you hate to but... please tell us your REAL age, it helps with program grants, class recruitment, and accurate statistics for the 55+ crowd that LARPD serves. When you use your real birthday, you help us serve you better. And we won’t tell... after all what are friends for!
Excerpt from Memoir & Personal Essay - Writing Memories "Mama, Daddy, my brother Richard and I lived on our grandparents' farm. We had school in a one-room house and eight grades altogether. Students had their own dipper to get water from the well. We walked the mile or so to school and in winters tried to see how far we could walk on top of the snow crust left by the snow plows. When we fell through the crust, we'd end up in snow up to our chests. We loved it."
