Lars Müller Publishers Spring 2012 Architecture Design Photography Art Society We are convinced that—today more than ever—the publisher’s task consists in selecting relevant topics, ideas, and themes from an ever-increasing flood of “contents.” Our program reflects this: with titles of high quality in the tradition of a “school of seeing” that has been a leading motif for many years. An earlier credo of the publishing house was: bringing Switzerland to the world. This spring, we are happy to present to the readers Swiss content of global significance: With Gigon / Guyer Architects: Works & Projects 2001– 2011, the renowned architects Annette Gigon and Mike Guyer offer in-depth insight into their architectural approach and projects of the last ten years, while Freitag: Out of the Bag writes the story of the company behind the world-famous Swiss design icon known as the “ Freitag bag.” These examples of “Swissness” are both contrasted and complemented by the playful and interactive book object Poemotion by the young Japanese designer Takahiro Kurashima. The fascinating moiré effects he creates with a set of graphical patterns and a lined plastic film provoke us to question our own perception. Lars Müller

Since its founding in 1989 , the office of Gigon/Guyer architects has designed a truly impressive series of projects. Among the most important are museum, residential, and office buildings, as well as mixed-use constructions. The recently completed Prime Tower and its annex buildings on the Maag site in Zürich have been internationally acclaimed. The monograph offers keen insight into how Annette Gigon and Mike Guyer understand architecture. The diverse concepts and the varied applications of design, material, form, and color employed in their projects are presented in detailed documentation of their work that includes photography, plans, and short texts. Three essays and a discussion between Patrick Gmür, Martin Steinmann, and the architects offer in-depth reflection and contextualization. ANNETTE G IGON , born in Herisau, Switzerland in 1959 . Imperfect Health The Medicalization of Architecture CCA , Montreal (Ed.)
The book examines the relationship between health and architecture On the occasion of the exhibition Imperfect Health: The Medicalization of Architecture at CCA Montreal, October 25 , 2011 – April 1 , 2012
Available March 2012 16 .5 × 24 cm, 6 ½ × 9 ½ in approx. 376 pages 300 illustrations, hardcover ISBN 978 -3 -03778 -279 -8 , English ISBN 978 -3 -03778 -284 -2 , French E UR 50 .– G BP 45 .– USD / C AD 70 .–
As health becomes a central focus of political debate, are architects, urban designers, and landscape architects seeking a new moral and political agenda to address these concerns? Imperfect Health looks at the complexity of today’s health problems juxtaposed with a variety of proposed architectural and urban solutions. Essays by Margaret Campbell, David Gissen, Carla C. Keirns, and Sarah Schrank deal with different aspects of the topic of health in the context of archi tecture such as: “An Architectural Theory of Pollution” and “Strange Bedfellows: Tuberculosis and Modern Architecture—How ‘The Cure’ Influenced Modernist Architecture and Design.” The book is published in collaboration with the CCA , Montreal on the occasion of the exhibition Imperfect Health: The Medicalization of Architecture, curated by Giovanna Borasi, CCA Curator of Contemporary Architecture, and Mirko Zardini, CCA Director and Chief Curator.

CAVILLO-IN THE AIR
CAVILLO-IN THE AIR
Toxic air pollutants – heavy metals, chemicals, pesticides - commonly found in urbanized regions around the globe, are largely attributed to emissions produced by heavy concentrations of industries and fossil-fuel based vehicles. A recent World Health Organization (WHO) report confirms that around 20% percent of global diseases and illness are related to environmental factors like air and water contamination – conditions usually imperceptible to the naked eye.

The project In the Air provides a tool to visualize, in real time, the invisible, microscopic agents present in the air of a city. A ‘toxic topography’ is digitally generated above the urban fabric through the interpolation of hourly data, collected in measuring stations. Each layer corresponds to one of the five most unhealthy and dangerous substances: Carbon Monoxide (CO), Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2), Sulphur Dioxide (SO2), Ozone (O3) and Particulate Matter (PM10). By differentiating the components, it is possible to locate the emission sources and identify possible actions to reduce their densities. In the short term, the project facilitates low pollution guidelines to plan daily activities. On the long run, the accumulation of data may provide low pollution guidelines for urban planning.

An in-depth look at the work approach of Madrid-based architects Mansilla + Tuñón With photographs by Dean Kaufman, Luis Asin, and Luis Baylón
16 .5 × 24 cm, 6 ½ × 9 ½ in approx. 160 pages approx. 100 illustrations, paperback ISBN 978 -3 -03778 -281 -1 , English E UR 32 .– G BP 28 .– USD / C AD 45 .–
From 2008 to 2010 , Madrid-based architects Mansilla + Tuñón taught at the Princeton University School of Architecture. The Mansilla + Tuñón Studios 2008 –2010 : Between Rules and Constraints brings together the essential ideas of the studios held by the architects. The book focuses on the atmosphere of the studios through the lens of each discussed site: the Farnsworth House in Plano, Illinois, the Spanish Royal Collection Museum, and the Gran Via, both in Madrid, Spain. In addition, the book includes a series of photo essays by photographers Dean Kaufman, Luis Asin, and Luis Baylón, and texts by Stan Allen, Enrique Walker, Sarah Whiting, and Agustin Perez Rubio. Madrid-based architects Luis M. Mansilla and E milio Tuñón , winners of the 2007 Mies van der Rohe Prize, are best known for their influential cultural buildings throughout Spain. They trained at the studio of Rafael Moneo before founding their own practice in 1992 . Mansilla + Tuñón’s work exposes the constraints of the architectural project—social, political, historical, and environmental—in order to create new rules from which to play. It is an ongoing conversation between the building and the place.

Features work by architect David Adjaye and artists Teresita Fernández, Jorge Pardo, and Matthew Ritchie The Adjaye Studios 2008 –2010 : Co-Authoring sets out to examine the intersection of art and architecture, not through the tradition of art within architecture, but through non-standard modes of collaboration. From 2008 to 2010 David Adjaye taught three studios at the Princeton School of Architecture. Each year, an artist —Teresita Fernández, Jorge Pardo, and Matthew Ritchie—was invited to collaborate with the studio and share their approach to three vastly different sites: New Jersey, the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn, and the city of Mérida in the Yucatán. Through non- standard modes of questioning, developing, and testing, the studios set out to overturn expectations a ssociated with the conventions of architectural design and representation. The Adjaye Studios 2008 –2010 : Co-Authoring features a curated selection of recent projects from David Adjaye and the three featured artists, interviews, essays, and a rchival material that unpacks and offers a new look at the shared space of art and architecture. DAVID ADJAYE , born in Dar-Es-Salam, Tanzania, in 1966 . He graduated from Royal College of Art, London, in 1993 and established his architectural practice in 2000 . He is recognized as one of the leading architects of his generation. MARC McQUADE , born in 1978 , is a project architect at Adjaye Associates, New York.

Freitag: Out of the Bag Museum of Design Zürich (Ed.) Publication about the success story of the cult label Freitag On the occasion of an exhibition dedicated to the Freitag story at Museum of Design Zürich, April–July 2012 , traveling exhibition 2012 –2014
Available May 2012 approx. 11 .6 × 17 .8 cm, 4 ½ × 7 in approx. 256 pages approx. 200 illustrations, paperback ISBN 978 -3 -03778 -278 -1 , English E UR 25 .– G BP 22 .– USD / C AD 35 .–
Back in 1993 , graphic designer brothers Markus and Daniel Freitag were on the lookout for a messenger bag. Inspired by the cheerfully colored trucks rumbling along the highway that crossed the city of Zürich just in front of their apartment, they cut a messenger bag out of an old truck tarpaulin. The shoulder strap was fashioned from used car seatbelts, while an old bicycle inner tube provided the edging. Freitag bags soon became fashionable and the Freitag company now employs more than 120 people. The publication uses the example of Freitag to show that design does not end with the product. The history, products, manufacture, organization, distribution, marketing, and reception are explained, commented upon, and presented in often surprising ways. On the occasion of an exhibition dedicated to the Freitag story at Museum of Design Zürich, Lars Müller Publishers will publish a generously illustrated paperback book that includes interviews, documentation, and essays on the Freitag concept and its history. MARKUS and DANIE L FRE ITAG are both graphic designers and founded Freitag in 1993 .

Poemotion Design: Takahiro Kurashima, Junji Hata Playful, interactive book-object in analog form Create astonishing visual effects by moving the moiré film across the pages
Available February 2012 17 × 23 cm, 6 ¾ × 9 in 36 pages 30 illustrations, paperback ISBN 978 -3 -03778 -277 -4 , English E UR 28 .– G BP 25 .– USD / C AD 40 .–
Poemotion is an interactive book-object. The abstract graphical patterns in this small volume are set in motion as soon as you move the attached special foil across them: moiré effects allow complex forms to develop, set circles in motion, and make graphical patterns vibrate. Inspired by Seesaw, an earlier book from the publisher and in a playful yet minimalist fashion the Japanese designer Takahiro Kurashima establishes a link to the motif of a “School of Seeing” that has long occupied a special place in the program of Lars Müller Publishers. With this book the viewer can discover how, as if by magic, figures and forms are created out of optical overlays, set in motion, and then disappear again. In the era of digitalization this book shows that interactivity is also possible in the format of the analog, bound book. TAKAHIRO KURASHIMA , born in 1970 . Studied graphic design at Musashino Art University. Since 1992 he has worked as art director for the Japanese advertising
agency dentsu.

In 2009 , Ruedi Baur, Design2 context, and the renowned Elisava School of Design in Barcelona launched a call for “Questions on Design” in order to create a typographical wall in the entrance area of Elisava. About a hundred persons from all over the world, designers as well as students, took part in the exercise. As of today, more than 700 questions have been gathered and put onto the wall. Among them, Vera and Ruedi Baur have selected the wittiest questions for this publication. They scrutinize different facets of design which are currently relevant in diverse fields, such as the natural sciences and society as a whole. The book documents the typographical wall with various photographs. All selected questions are reproduced in their original language. A text explains the idea and the realization of the project. RUE DI BAUR , born in Paris in 1956 , is a graphic designer. He is the head and founder of two studios, intégral ruedi baur et associés in Paris and integral ruedi baur in Zürich. Since 2004 , he is a professor at the Hochschule für Gestaltung und Kunst Zürich, and is in charge of Design2 context, a recently founded institute for research on design.

Kitchen tools — pans, knives, ladles, can openers, garlic presses — are found in every household and are used daily. And yet they receive little attention. After use they vanish into cupboards and drawers. Küchen Werkzeug / Kitchen Tools: Design by Kuhn Rikon provides a platform for products developed over the past five years at the Swiss kitchen tool manufacturer Kuhn Rikon, products that explore new directions in terms of function and aesthetics. The photography by Cortis & Sonderegger lets them emerge from the background to become the true protagonists in playfully arranged everyday and not-so-everyday settings. The photographs are complemented by texts by Claude Lichtenstein, Christof Gassner, and Philipp Beyeler, and discuss the kitchen as a world en miniature, design for cooking, and the history of this iconic Swiss kitchen tool manufacturer.

For Future’s Sake! sets itself the goal of conveying the knowledge revealed by current climate research in a manner that is both concise and appealing. It differs from other books on climate change principally in the way it is conceived as a visual reader that deliberately uses the effectiveness and power of the image to present the theme in a graphic way. Extensive series of images with large photographs and informative diagrams accompany well-researched essays on and around the themes of climate history, research and policy and thus offer an in-depth examination. The book provides insights into the history of the earth’s climate and reveals the factors that are responsible for climate change. It poses questions and provides answers: why is the earth becoming warmer? What are the consequences we must reckon with? What can we do against this? Who determines the future? As both a volume of illustrations and a reader, For Future’s Sake! is directed at all those who want to equip themselves with knowledge and understanding to confront what is probably our planet’s most pressing problem. René Schwarzenbach was dean of the Department of Environmental Sciences
at ETH Zürich. German
