W

hen I think about the aftermath of the Presidential election, I’m not sure how to talk to our students in order to make sense of things. Clearly the mood of the country is one of widespread anger. And just as clearly, prognosticators and pollsters got it monumentally wrong. What isn’t so clear is the why of the angry mood. While manufacturing and low level white collar jobs have been sent overseas, the Nation’s economy is in the best shape it’s been since the advent of the Great Recession. And, yes, Washington politics are more toxic than ever; but as we’ve seen in Sacramento, a divided legislature and executive branch prevents one party’s agenda from steamrolling over the party in the minority. Even the outcome of the election reflects a divided country; with one candidate winning the popular vote and the other winning the Electoral College.

As a Catholic educator, I find it especially troubling that so much attention was given to themes of exclusion, racial profiling, questioning the right to healthcare access and pursuit of aggressive military action overseas; to highlight just a few of the divisive issues that stoked the growing anger of the electorate. At La Salle, we seek to build an inclusive community in which students learn to examine both sides of complex issues. We don’t support the ease with which political opponents employ uncivil tactics to shout each other down and their tendency to encourage their supporters to do the same.

Our teenagers were exposed to a steady diet of uncivil behavior during the nightly news, and on print and social media. I don’t understand the angry mood of the country today; but I do believe it was, at least in part, encouraged by the way news of the candidates’ behavior were reported in the media. When everyone is shouting, no one is listening.

We expect our students to seek understanding of complex political, economic, social and moral issues by listening to their teachers and to each other. And, as an educational community that seeks to include rather than exclude, we expect our students to recognize that, regardless of one’s political views, La Salle stands on the side of immigrants, marginalized people, middle income families and successful families who see a world where everyone should have the opportunity to succeed. I don’t know how much greater a challenge this will be over the course of the next four years; but I do know that for the last 60 years La Salle has been committed to nurturing, inspiring, challenging and motivating the students entrusted to our care to acquire the habits of responsible citizenship.

Which brings me to the purpose of this Annual Report; in addition to celebrating the financial and philanthropic success of the 2015-2016 school year, we are celebrating our sixtieth anniversary of making the La Salle Difference accessible to an economically, demographically and ethnically diverse set of students. We are proud of what has transpired here at La Salle since we first opened our doors in 1956; and we know that, regardless of the challenges of the next four or ten or 15 years, we won’t lose sight of our fundamental purpose: to produce good students and good people who understand our commitment to Learn – Serve – Lead.

Saint Brother Solomon Compiled by John Blackstock ’67

Brother Solomon Le Clercq, FSC, was canonized in a ceremony in Saint Peter’s Square in Vatican City on October 16, 2016 with Lasallians from around the world in attendance.

N

icholas Le Clercq entered the Christian Brothers novitiate in 1767. His happiness at having finally found the right path to God is evident in the many letters he wrote to his family. A gifted teacher at the age of 23, Brother Solomon Le Clercq sometimes had classes of up to 130 pupils, to whom he

taught reading, writing and calculus from morning to evening. He always showed a great love for people and a great attachment to his work. He was a professor of mathematics, master of novices and secretary to Brother Agathon, the Superior General. At the age of 27, he made final vows.

Early in the French Revolution, the monarchy was overthrown and the next target was the Church. In 1790, the Civil Constitution of the Clergy gave the state complete control over the Church in France. In order to continue to function, priests and religious were forced to take an oath to support the constitution. Most of the Brothers refused and so were forced gradually to abandon their schools and communities. Eventually the Institute was deprived altogether of legal status in France. Soon the Brothers dispersed in order to escape persecution; however, Brother Solomon, having refused to take the oath, decided to stay to protect the Mother House in Paris hoping to remain incognito. We have many of his letters to his family during this dangerous time. The last one is dated August 15, 1792. That very day he was arrested and confined in the Carmelite monastery, which had become a prison. On September 2, Brother Solomon, together with a number of bishops and priests, were killed by sword while Brother Solomon was beheaded in the monastery garden.

Brother Solomon Le Clercq was beatified on October 17, 1926, along with 188 of his fellow martyrs. He was the first Christian Brother martyr and also the first Brother to be beatified. As a result of a miracle in Caracas, Venezuela in 2007, Brother Solomon was canonized, by Pope Francis, on October 16, 2016.

Brother Solomon is the 13th Christian Brother to be proclaimed a Saint by the Catholic Church.

City Council Approves La Salle Master Plan

T

he Pasadena City Council recently approved a monumental project for La Salle High School that will revamp the school’s facilities. The La Salle Master Plan, which is the first in school history, consists of three-phases, spread over 15 years, and is meant to “address various athletic and programmatic needs.”

Dr. Richard Gray, president of La Salle, pled his case before the council, arguing that the school needed “excellent facilities, to support excellent programs.” Gray described La Salle, which is indeed the largest private Catholic high school in the city, as the “most ethnically, economically, and demographically diverse school in Pasadena,” serving “more middle income students than any other high school in Pasadena” and providing “more and greater financial aid than any other school in Pasadena.”

With 22 varsity sports teams, (more than some small colleges), La Salle’s current facilities are not capable of accommodating practice for all of its teams on campus. In addition to the baseball and softball programs being outsourced to fields in Arcadia, La Salle’s lack of facilities presents its teams with significant scheduling conflicts, resulting in some teams having to practice at unorthodox times.

“I need my freshmen to be doing homework at 9:00pm, not practicing because teams have to share one facility,” said Dr. Gray.

The school’s performing arts facilities are also underwhelming, relative to the size of its student

body. Dr. Gray described the current circumstances as “inadequate, uncomfortable, and cramped.”

Therefore, in order to more properly accommodate its students’ needs, the La Salle Master Plan will construct five new buildings: a new practice gymnasium, aquatic center (includes outdoor swimming pool with a sound wall to minimize noise), performance arts/sound stage building, classroom building, and a field house.

Construction will require the demolition of two existing buildings, removal of the baseball field, and renovation of the existing classroom/administrative building.

Additionally, the Master Plan calls for “reconfiguration and extension of [the] existing surface parking lot (north parking lot) and extension of the southern surface parking lot,” according to city staff’s report.

There will be no increase in student enrollment, but five new faculty members will be added, increasing the staff’s size from 90 to 95.

The project will result in a net increase of 83,874 square feet and, upon completion of all three phases, “the proposed gross floor area of the campus would be 179,375 square feet.”

Phase 1 is projected to occur within five years and phases 2 and 3 will occur 10 to 15 years down the line.

Residents submitted their own recommendations, including making the aquatic center indoors/soundproof and lowering the overall building height, to name a few, but, in the end, Council decided to move forward with staff’s recommendation (with a few minor changes).

Upon Council’s approval of the Master Plan, Mayor Terry Tornek struck his gavel and jokingly addressed the crowd of La Salle students and cheerleaders in full uniform: “You are dismissed.”

The Lancer Cheer Squad supported the La Salle Master Plan at City Hall on September 19.
