Principal Ideas Welcome to April! Before going into all of the events upcoming this month, I want to take some time to recap some of the wonderful things that took place here at La Salle in March.
Courtney R. Kassakhian Principal
March was a month of transition at La Salle. On March 1 acceptance letters went out to qualified freshmen applicants. Accepted students were invited to a new family social organized by the Admissions Office and Student Life to get them excited for registration day, which took place March 9. All of our students involved did a fantastic job of showing off their Lancer Spirit and giving the accepted students and parents a sneak peek of what it is like to be a Lancer. And the accepted students liked what they saw: we had the highest turnout for registration day in over five years! We are very excited to welcome all of these new families into the Lancer Family.
Christian Service Awards
St John Baptist de La Salle
Did You Know? In 1717, despite vigorous opposition from the Catholic Church, the De La Salle Christian Brothers were the first established reliugious order of consecrated laymen and the first order without priests.
Also in March the Archdiocese of Los Angeles celebrated its annual Christian Service Awards honoring students and faculty who have excelled in Christian service. Two of our La Salle seniors were honored at the event on March 19: Maya Enrequez and Amanda Feghali. Maya volunteers regularly at Union Station, and Amanda works regularly with pet rescues and participated in an immersion program last summer in which she helped build a garden and playground for a school in Thailand. Congratulations to these young women who are truly living out our motto of Learn, Serve, Lead.
Anxiety Awareness Assembly
In March we also had a viewing of the film Angst in a special assembly for the entire student body. Angst is an IndieFlix Original documentary designed to raise awareness around anxiety. The film includes interviews with kids, teens, educators, experts and parents. The screening was followed by discussion in mentor classes and then a parent viewing of the film in the evening. Thank you to all of the parents who came out to view this film and learn more about anxiety and how it affects teens. We know our teens face a lot of Principal continued on page 2

stresses, whether it is from pressure they put on themselves or pressures we may be putting on them as the adults in their lives. Our hope with the screening was to give students awareness of the issue and let them know that if they are feeling anxious, they are not alone and they can get help. Additionally about 25 staff, faculty, and coaches will be going through a mental health first aid training in August. The training covers anxiety, depression and helping students in crisis and non-crisis situations. I often say that the best word to describe our students here at La Salle is happy. With these programs we are working to make sure that remains true.
Spring Musical
March was also a busy month for the Arts and Media Department. Portico’s Arts Space was packed two weekends in a row for the Spring Musical, City of Angels. The cast and crew of La Salle students, under the direction of Dr. Jude Lucas, put on a truly fantastic production. Thank you to all the family and friends who came out to support our talented students.
Grandparents Day
April also brings prom, the last junior retreat of the year and, of course, Grandparents Day. Grandparents Day will take place on Wednesday, April 17, the day before we begin Easter Break. If your student has grandparents who are able to attend, I highly encourage you to ask your student to invite them. It is a very special day that all the participants greatly enjoy every year.
Graduation Requirements
After Grandparents Day, we begin Easter Break! Upon our return from Easter Break on Monday, April 29, there will be only 22 more school days before finals begin! Remember that La Salle does not grant graduation units for courses if students receive a final semester grade of D+ or lower. If your student is in danger of ending the semester with a grade of D+ or lower, talk to them RIGHT

NOW about what they can do to earn a better grade: What assignments have they missed that they need to turn in? How are they studying? What are they doing during Academic Support time? Are they taking advantage of Student Success Workshop every Tuesday and Thursday from 2:30-3:30? There are many resources for students here at La Salle, not the least being teachers who are willing and available to help students who ask for help. So, please also know you can always reach out to a teacher or academic advisor/counselor to discuss strategies for success.
Seniors Amanda Fegahli and Maya Enrequez
Christian Service Awards The Archdiocese Christian Service Awards were given to Amanda Fegahli and Maya Enrequez during a ceremony at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles, on March 19.

Easter Wishes
As we head into Easter and Easter break, I wish all of our families a blessed and enjoyable Easter and a safe and relaxing vacation period. I look forward to seeing all of our students return to school refreshed and ready to finish strong on April 29.
Amanda volunteers at Priceless Pet Resuce 2 to 3 times a week (6 hours), to date, 520 hours of service. She walks the dogs, cleans the dog and cat kennels, does laundry and dishes. Recently, she has been assisting with the New Volunteer Orientation. In addition to her work at the rescue, Amanda helps with mobile adoption efforts. Finnaly, she works at Rustic Pathways (45 hours), and Union Station Homeless Services (72 hours).
Maya Enrequez
Maya volunteers every 3rd Friday of the month at Union Station, where she prepares and serves meals to the homeless. Maya also volunteers every Sunday at St. Barnabas Church (72 hours) where she teaches children about Christian faith through words and songs.

Parent Association Report
Hi La Salle Families! On behalf of the Parent Association and Boosters, we would like to welcome the students and families of the Class of 2023, and new students transferring to La Salle. Congratulations and enjoy the next four years of high school. My advice for students and parents: The best way to get to know La Salle is to get involved in La Salle - be a participant and not a spectator. You will enjoy this new adventure! Cherry Agapito P’18,’20 Parent Association President
Next, I would like to thank all the people that joined us to help at the New Family Social and on Registration Day. A big shout out to Tammy Morioka-Shimazu, P’18,'20 and the Academic Booster crew, Jill and Thane Christopher, P’16,'18,'21, the Arts Booster Presidents, Ralph Ramirez, P’16,'18 and the Athletic Booster crew, and Krisandra Torres, P’21 Registration Day Hospitality Chair and William Po, P’21. Dinner and drinks will be hosted by Dr. Gray starting at 6:00pm, and the Parent Association meeting will begin at 6:30pm, followed by the Booster meetings at 7:30pm. Please come and support your Boosters. Being a booster is a great way to get involved and know what’s happening in academics, arts, and athletics. Remember you will receive 1 service hour for each person who attends the Parent Association meeting and 1 service hour for each person that attends a Booster meeting.

April 2019
In addition, as we plan for next year, there will be several positions available in each Booster group. Being part of the Booster Board covers all your 20 hours! Come to the meetings to hear more about the positions. Remember, a great way to get to know La Salle is to be a participant and get involved. Lastly, our annual Crystal Ball will be on May 10th at the Noor in Pasadena. It will be a fun-filled evening with music, dancing, auctions and laughter. Get your friends together and reserve a table at the Crystal Ball event. All the proceeds from the event and auction items goes back to the students and the school. Please come and show your support. Whether you’re attending the event or not, you can bid on auction items online at https://e.givesmart.com/ events/c1L/. There are some items online right now, but there definitely will be more to come. Keep the site as a favorite and check back often.

Faculty vs Seniors Charity Basketball Game Goes to Overtime On March 27th, faculty members took on the Class of 2019 in the Duffy Lewis Gymnasium. Hundreds cheered the 7:00pm tip-off as the two well-matched teams battled to a 68 68 tie sending the game into overtime. The seniors finally prevailed 74 to 72 in this magnificent game! This charity game raised thousands of dollars with all proceeds going to support Riley's Race for Change that benefits our Lasallian sister school, Mount La Salle in Nigeria. This is a component of the Christian Brothers Twinning initiative that encourages Districts that are financially able to aid those Christian Brothers schools that are most in need.

Cardboard Regatta La Salle’s ninth annual Cardboard Regatta took place on Friday, March 29 at the Sierra Madre Aquatic Center. A beautiful, sunny spring day witnessed dozens of teams of physics students proudly transporting their cardboard creations to the Aquatic Center. Constructed with only standard or appliance grade cardboard and clear packaging tape, (No duct tape allowed!). the teams were charged to design seaworthy boats that would hold three of their team members and then paddle the length of the Olympic sized Sierra Madre pool and back. The teachers involved were quite proud of their students who were able to apply the physics that they learned in class to a real-life situations. “Paddle faster… you need an A!” - Concerned parent

Financial Planning and Tax Planning in Support of La Salle The Planned Giving program at La Salle College Preparatory provides support to the School’s endowment through one of a number of Planned Giving instruments. The program is essential in supporting the long-term goals and Mission of our School.
Planning for the Future
In December of 2017, federal tax legislation overhauled the tax code; significant changes have impacted the filing of 2018 income tax returns. Despite concerns soon after the legislation passed that charitable giving would be hampered by the 2017 tax law, it appears that this is not going to be the case. It is important to note that the tax legislation was at the federal level and does not impact state of California returns (at least for 2018 tax returns). The following summarizes ways in which tax-efficient gifts can continue to be made. Donations of appreciated assets such as securities and real estate held at least one year A charitable donation of the current value of the asset being donated is available, and there is no tax due on the capital gain which would have been subject to federal and state tax had the asset been sold. The stock market is still strong after some slippage in early 2018 and again at year end. Increased giving can create additional itemized tax deductions With the higher level of standard deductions now in place, many taxpayers can utilize other tax deductions that might have been eliminated under the law by increasing charitable giving. Estate tax planning still has a role in charitable giving Though the threshold for the value of estates subject to taxation has risen dramatically, there is still a concern of many donors about outliving their financial resources. Donating during one’s lifetime in such cases is thus an issue.
10
April 2019
However, by bequesting gifts from their estates, the donor’s lifetime financial worries are addressed while still supporting the long-term goals in support of the Mission of our School. Using retirement plan assets to donate Taxpayers over the age of 70 ½ can make a direct transfer from an IRA to a charity of up to $100,000. This strategy is referred to as a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD). This satisfies the requirement of the taxpayer/donor to meet one’s required annual minimum IRA distribution. The distribution is NOT included in one’s income, thereby creating the possibility of a lower overall tax bill for the year. Federal tax on a portion of one’s social security benefits can be lowered or eliminated by the utilization of a QCD.
La Salle College Preparatory
Utilizing these and other financial and tax strategies requires the counsel of one’s financial and/or tax advisor. However, these and other planned giving opportunities can be beneficial to the donor (from both financial and tax perspectives) and support the donor’s goal of supporting the Mission of our School. These planned giving strategies are available to benefit both the donor and La Salle College Preparatory. Please review the Planned Giving articles in future publications of both the Parent Newsletter and Lancer Magazine for ongoing updates in the Planned Giving Program. IN SUMMARY La Salle College Preparatory can provide more information, both generically and specifically, regarding the benefits available through Planned Giving. For more information, please contact Jon Keates, Vice President for Institutional Advancement at 626.696.4344.

Witty and glamorous, City of Angels features a sensational jazz score, including popular songs, “You Can Always Count on Me,” “Tennis Song,” and “I’m Nothing Without You.” La Salle's 16-year veteran, Dr. Jude Lucas, directs the production and set design, and remarks, “It is an absolute delight to travel back in time with this talented cast and crew of over 50 students who have worked so hard to deliver excellence and enthusiasm for this musical.” See page 15 for show times and more information. 3.14 - Pi Day
Pi Day is celebrated on March14th (3/14) around the world. Pi (Greek letter “π”) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant — the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is approximately 3.14159. Pi Day is an annual opportunity for Lancers and math enthusiasts to recite the infinite digits of Pi, talk to their friends about math, eat pie and, of course, toss a few creme pies to raise money for Riley's Race for Change.

S&D Update La Salle Speech & Debate had a very busy February and March. From the first weekend of February, La Salle Debate competed at the University of Las Vegas, the prestigious Cal Berkeley tournament, and National Qualifiers for debate. Seniors Sebastian Dunbar and Jackie Henley went 6-0 in prelims, and got to the quarterfinals (top 8 teams) of the most competitive tournament of the season. Sophomores Rhyen Hunt and Maddie Cahill got to triple Octos (top 64) in debate. At National Qualifiers, Sebastian, Jackie, Rhyen, and Maddie all qualified to the National Speech & Debate Association competition in Dallas, Texas. They look forward to competing at the Tournament of Champions in Lexington, Kentucky at the end of April, and traveling to Dallas to the Grand Nationals in late June
AcaDeca Update On the weekend of March 16-17, La Salle hosted the Regional Round for the World Scholars Cup. Over 200 students participate in this event from various public and private schools in the area. Our Academic Decathlon Scholars excelled as they won both the individual title as well as the team title. Junior Colby Stenzel received the honor of being the individual champion. Similarly, his team - along with sophomore Matt Day and junior Ewan Painter - won the team title. This is the second straight year a team from La Salle has won the team title and the first time we had the top scholar. Our second team is comprised of sophomore Adam Lewczuk, sophomore Franklin Cheng, and junior Christina Chen. La Salle placed five of the top ten individual students and seven of the top ten teams in the competition. In the six multiple choice categories, seven different Lancer scholars posted the top score (there was a tie in Science). For those keeping track (like coach John Erb), our Lancers soundly defeated local rivals St. John Bosco and Flintridge Sacred Heart. Our Lancer Scholars only had five weeks to prepare for over 900 pages of material. They were exceptional in disseminating the information and crushing their foes with it on game day. The next step for the La Salle Scholars is the World Round in The Hague, Netherlands, in July.
Debaters spend an average of 63 hours of study before each tournament and consume over 11 bags of Flamin' Hot Cheetos per tournament. We don't know why.
