Principal Ideas Learn•Serve•Lead

Hello! Although it seems like school just let out, August is already upon us. In his song “Wildfire”, John Mayer sings that, “a little bit of summer is what the whole year is about.” I tend to agree, and I hope that you have been able to thoroughly enjoy the summer so far. Summer, or at least summer vacation, will come to an end and your students will be heading back to school before you know it. On July 12, we mailed a packet of information home for each student. Please carefully read the contents and be sure to complete the online information process with School Admin by August 10. (This deadline has been pushed back a week). Meeting this deadline is important to making sure the school year gets off to a good start and that we have important information about your student should we need it in an emergency. THANK YOU in advance for making the completion of these forms a priority.

The School Year Begins The start of the school year for NEW students (9th grade and transfers) is Tuesday, August 14. The day will include an orientation program

from 9:00am to 2:00pm (checkin begins at 8:30am) that will be directed by students and adults from our Student Life Team. Students may come in free dress and do not need to bring any textbooks; lunch will be provided. That same evening, we will also host a very informative New Parent Orientation Program beginning at 6:30pm in the Dining Hall. I strongly encourage the parents of our new students, both freshmen and transfers, to attend this activity. As you know, the transition to high school is a big one; the goal of this evening is to give you as parents the tools and information to help your student navigate that change successfully.

Our First Day On the next day, Wednesday, August 15, we will have our First Day of School. We have completely revamped this day from what it has been the last few years. All students will be on campus beginning at 8:00am. They will report to their Mentor classrooms and the day will include a rally, liturgy, ID pictures and a focus on preparing to have a successful year. Juniors and seniors will be Principal Ideas Continued on page 2

dismissed at 12:30pm.; freshmen and sophomores will begin ID pictures at 12:30pm and be dismissed upon completion. (No later than 1:30pm). It is a Dress Uniform Day for all students. Thursday, August 16 we will begin our regular A/B schedule.

Summer of Change Summer is always a time for change in a school - facilities get upgrades, some community members leave, and new people join the community. This summer at La Salle has been no different. FUN NEW STUFF TO KNOW

2

Facilities As you know, we have been in the midst of a multi-year process to redesign the Blakeslee Library. Last fall we were excited to open the STEAM lab and this past spring the library was closed so that some major changes could begin on that space. The new Blakeslee Learning Commons will reopen sometime in October or November. When it does open you will see the following: new bay windows, four group study rooms, a relocated circulation desk, a variety of seating options for students, and new work spaces for our educational technology team. I believe that when the space is finished the students will love it, but in the meantime we will be unable to use that space. As such, Parent Association meetings in September and October will take place in the Dining Hall. Although the Blakeslee Library remodel has been a big project, it has not been the only project over the summer. Mr. Katz , our facilities director, has been very busy overseeing the ongoing improvement of our facilities with some changes you can see and others you can’t. Those of you passing the school throughout the summer will have seen the grass area in front of the Duffy Lewis Gymnasium taped off. This was for the re-piping of the 60 year-old gas and water lines leading into the school and gym. Another project that most will not notice, but is a great improvement to our facilities, is the removal of the old stoves in the kitchen area of the Dining Hall and the installation of three new commercial stoves. Other things you hopefully will notice upon your return to campus is the repainting of the lines in both the upper and lower parking

lots, the installation of artificial grass in the areas around the Dining Hall and amphitheater, and updated signage on Kohorst Field. Staff and Faculty Changes As there is every year, we also have changes in personnel for the upcoming school year. Over the summer we said goodbye to Mrs. Liz Cadwalader, Mr. Nathan Housman, Mrs. Leah Rohjani, and Dr. Doug Rynerson. Mrs. Cadwalader will be doing admissions work at another high school, Mr. Housman is leaving the world of education to work in project management with a construction design firm, Mrs. Rohjani will be focusing on completing her PhD, and Dr. Rynerson will be working on STEAM initiatives with the Fullerton School District. I wish all of them well in their new endeavors and thank them each for the work they have done in supporting the mission of La Salle in their time here. When some people leave others, of course, enter. I am excited to introduce you to some of the new people who will be joining our fantastic faculty and staff for the upcoming school year. Tam Ly - Ms. Ly is our new Director of Guidance and Counseling. Ms. Ly most recently directed the college counseling program at Providence High School. Prior to that she worked in the counseling department at Monrovia High School. Jeff Niemiec - Mr.Niemiec is not completely new to La Salle: he was the assistant coach for our debate team last year. Although he has a passion for debate, he studied engineering and has worked professionally as an engineer. We are excited to have him become a full-time employee this year, continuing his work with debate while also teaching our new Science of Architecture and Engineering course. Darryl Oliver - A La Salle alumnus, Mr. Oliver '11 is excited to be joining our English department. Besides teaching English I and II, Mr. Oliver will also be working with our students in the Student Success Workshop (SSW). Suzy Rettig - Mrs. Rettig may be new to our staff, but she has been a part of our community for a long time. Married to an alumnus and a mother of a current senior, Mrs. Rettig has worked

as a volunteer in the past, specifically as co-chair of the Crystal Ball Committee. We are excited to now have her as our assistant admissions coordinator. Whitney Strouse - Ms. Strouse '11 is excited to return to her alma mater as the Community Life Coordinator. As part of our Student Life team, she will be organizing all of the fun activities that make our students’ time here at La Salle such a special and memorable one: dances, rallies, lunchtime events, Homecoming and so on. Michael Stumpf - Mr. Stumpf is stepping into the role of Dean of Students. Mr. Stumpf comes to La Salle with a wealth of experience in Catholic school administration. Among the positions he has held in Catholic high schools include social studies teacher, director of student life and most recently principal.

Faith, Service, Community

There has also been some internal movement of people. Charlie Guillen has moved into the admissions office and will be our new admissions coordinator. As an alumnus and now a father of a current student, Mr. Guillen '94 has a truly unique perspective to share with families going through the admissions process and we are looking forward to his representing La Salle.

The Purpose of Lasallian Education: to provide a human and Christian education to the young, especially the poor, according to the ministry which the Church has entrusted to it.

As we look forward to the beginning of another school year, I hope that you and your students are excited about the possibilities that the year holds. The faculty and staff at La Salle are here to help students learn and grow, and we all look forward to working with you throughout this year.

La Salle Matters Guy Parker, Chief Strategy Officer for Workhorse Marketing, a branding and advertising agency, explains the importance of a company’s brand this way: “When customers or employees look at your website, logo, pamphlet or store front, what do they see? Every aspect of your company says something about who you are and what you have to offer.” He goes on to make this point: “Without a good branding strategy, companies are not going to be able to express their nature to their customer base...Good branding focuses on “why” a company does what it does.” This has been on my mind lately as we are about to conclude a two-year process that has examined every aspect of the School’s interaction with the public – from the look of our stationery to signage and, especially, messaging. As readers of this column know, I regularly point out that Pasadena and its nearest suburbs are home to the largest concentration of private schools per capita anywhere in the nation. At the secondary level, La Salle competes with ten private and/or Catholic high schools within a twenty-mile radius. Each is distinctive in its own right – leading me to tell parents that no teenager should be unhappy at the end of a school day – there are plenty of options to match adolescent interests. That having been said, with such a large concentration of private high schools within shouting distance of each other, it can be difficult to be heard above the noise when one is attempting to articulate a distinctive and compelling message. As we entered our 60th year, we knew that it was time to look at the School’s marvelous story and to ensure that a clear, compelling articulation of the “La Salle Difference” would stand out in a crowded marketplace over the course of the next forty years. We know what the central elements of the “La Salle Difference” are Catholic • College Preparatory • Co-educational • Diverse And we recognize that the combination of these four elements distinguishes La Salle from every one of our competitors in the greater Pasadena area. Now, we believe it is time to “shout from the rooftops” and celebrate the benefits of the “La Salle Difference.” Thanks to the good offices of alum, Joe Olender, we were able to enter into a consulting arrangement with Innovation Protocol, a brand management firm who has served clients such as:

4

Even the most casual of observers would recognize these entities and the values they stand for. We wanted to make sure that, in the Los Angeles Basin, La Salle would enjoy an equally powerful name recognition. But first, we had to return to the basics: we needed to make sure that we could clearly articulate who we are, what we do and why we matter.

AUGUST 2018

After 60 years of touching the hearts and minds of the students entrusted to our care, it was easier than we realized: La Salle College Preparatory is where young adults discover their path to excellence in high school and beyond. We also understood that this path to excellence is rooted in the nearly 400-year-old educational path launched by our Founder, Saint John Baptist de La Salle which has led us to unapologetically advocate for a Catholic, co-educational and diverse student community. And because we recognized that these essential elements of our educational mission define the “La Salle Difference,” we knew that we could position the School in such a way as to ensure that those who may be unfamiliar with our approach to college preparation would encounter informational materials that are fresh, easy to understand and bold in their assertion of who we are and why we matter. Chief among those elements is a fresh take on the School’s 60-year-old crest. We wanted to make sure that its elements would be familiar to our more than 14,000 alumni while, at the same time, communicating to future alumni that La Salle is embracing the educational challenges of the 21st century. To that end, we knew that its main elements needed to be fresh and easy to identify, while at the same time, echoing a 400-yearold educational enterprise: Honoring our centuries-old tradition of educational innovation can be found in the lower left quadrant, where the broken chevrons (taken from the De La Salle family crest) reference the Saint’s regal family history in support of the French monarchy. In the upper right quadrant are five stars. The star has been a symbol of the Christian Brothers’ commitment to passing on the faith for almost 400 years. It can be found on the earliest representations of the Brothers’ printed materials, all the way to the present day (check out the Christian Brothers’ international website: http://www.lasalle.org/en/).

La Salle Matters Continued from page 5

That there are five stars, not only reinforces the Lasallian priority to pass on the faith to future generations, but also highlights the five core principles of all Lasallian schools: • Faith in the presence of God • Quality education • Respect for all persons • Concern for the poor and social justice • Inclusive community

LEARN SERVE LEAD

Lastly, the forward-slanting lines in the upper left and lower right quadrants not only echo the historic broken chevrons, but also “lean in” to the future (going forward). And, while the fact that the angle of the slanting lines is 560 - a nod to the year the School was founded - is, admittedly, a bit “wonky,” it does give this unapologetic salesman the ability to talk about the marvelous 60-year history of La Salle. And, of course, the red cross that creates the four quadrants acknowledges our unshakeable commitment to the power of Catholic education. As the new school year rolls out, you’ll be hearing more from me on this exciting initiative. In the meantime, Guy Parker’s message is worth another shout out: “Branding is important for every company to set itself apart from the competition and define its mission for both customers and employees. Branding includes images, content, marketing, logos, website and other materials that might be used to define a brand in the eyes and minds of its target audiences.” Happy New Year!

From Institutional Advancement

Welcoming the Class of 2022 As the summer months pass by, it won’t be long until the students are back on campus and classes resume. Members of the Class of 2022 will begin their academic years at our School. The summer months on campus were full of various activities offering opportunities in academics, athletics, and arts as well camps for young women and men who are not yet of high school age. Many campus facilities received needed attention, including the renovation of the Blakesleee Library. Support for our School and its various needs are provided through a combination of annual giving and planned giving. Tuition and annual giving programs are keys to providing the financing necessary for any year’s operations and maintenance. And the results of sound financial strategies through the years provide additional security and support in these efforts. As our School looks ahead to its mid and long term financial needs, it relies on Planned Gifts to support these and to enhance our endowment. Planned Gifts are often considered to be large in nature, and oftentimes this is the case. But even a modest Planned Gift is a strategic and integral part of this program. Key characteristics of a Planned Gift include (but are not limited to):

3 3 3 3 3

Leaving a Legacy without giving up assets Enhancing the rate of return on one’s portfolio Reduction of income tax liability with the potential to eliminate capital gains taxes Diversification of one’s investment portfolio

WE ARE ALWAYS GRATEFUL FOR YOUR SUPPORT

Providing additional sources of retirement income

The implementation and impact of the recently enacted federal tax legislation are progressing, and though there have been changes affecting charitable giving, most of the underlying giving strategies are still in play. With all that is going on, let us consider the possibilities of supporting the long term needs of our School through a Planned Gift that is beneficial to both the donor and La Salle High School. These gifts are an integral and strategic part of maintaining and enhancing the successes and opportunities available to our students. Please review the Planned Giving articles in future publications of both the Parent Newsletter and Lancer Magazine for ongoing updates in the Planned Giving Program.

In Summary

La Salle High School can provide more information, both generically and specifically, regarding the benefits available through Planned Giving. For more information, please contact Jon Keates, the Director of Institutional Advancement at 626.696.4344.

Some of the high school baseball players who participated in the All-In Baseball Tournament benefitting Children's Hospital Los Angeles share in the presentation of the donation check from the tournament. Baseball Donates to CHLA

During 2014, the Lancers' Baseball program moved to our renovated diamond in Arcadia County Park. Then La Salle's Head Coach Harry Agajanian said he "felt it was a good time to use our new facility to help promote awareness to his student athletes and to give back to the community in the form of playing baseball for children who possibly do not have the skills that our athletes have." Beginning with 24 schools participating in the first year, the tournament has grown from one field to twelve local high school baseball fields and has increased the entrants to 55 in just four years. Under the leadership of "Coach Aggie" La Salle has donated over $26,000 to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Following the check presentation ceremony, Coach Aggie and many of the student athletes toured the hospital and facilities. "The ballplayers get a real feel for their contribution as they sign baseballs and caps for the children, "Coach Aggie said "It's incredibly gratifying for them."

May 1, 2018 Harry Agajanian PO Box 661723 Arcadia, CA 91006 Dear Harry, On behalf of the patients and families that Children’s Hospital Los Angeles cares for, we would like to thank you for your support and generosity of the hospital by hosting the ‘ALL IN Baseball Tournament, which raised vital funds to benefit the hospital. We know that it can be difficult to raise funds on our behalf in this challenging economic time but we want you to know that every dollar counts. Once again, thank you for your invaluable commitment to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and for all that you have done to help us sustain our mission to create hope and build healthier futures. We hope you will continue to support Children’s Hospital Los Angeles by hosting future fundraising events, and the Special Events team here is happy to help in your future planning.
