Principal Ideas Hello. Well, somehow we have made it to June! This school year went by incredibly fast for me, and I hope that it was a fun and exciting year for all of you and your students as well.

Courtney R. Kassakhian Principal

May was filled with activities, so I’d like to share just a few highlights. On May 15 we had our annual Founder’s Day Liturgy. Every year at this event we announce the recipients of the Lasallian Educator of the Year and St. Joseph School Service awards. This year I was very happy to present Mrs. Pam Wagner with the Educator of the Year award and Mrs. Kathy Sanchez–Fitzgerald with the School Service award. These awards were well deserved by these two women who put so much time, energy, and love into the work they do here at La Salle.

Showdown VI

Following Founder’s Day, we had our 6th annual Showdown on Friday, May 17. The Juniors won the Showdown, which was an awesome display of spirit and school pride and all in attendance, including parents who came to watch in the stands, had a great time.

Advanced Placement Exams

St. John Baptist de La Salle

Did You Know? The three miracles attributed to Saint La Salle as required to obtain sainthood. The cure of Brother Adelminian of a deadly disease; extraordinary recovery of a young student dying of pneumonia and a paralyzed Brother who regained the use of his legs.

And, as it does every year, May brought Advanced Placement (AP) exams. Two hundred seventy-two students took more than 500 exams in 20 different subjects! Ms. Collette Salvatierra, our research librarian, did a fantastic job organizing the testing and we are grateful for all her work.

Commencement 2019

And, of course, we ended May with our annual graduation events. Events included Baccalaureate Mass at The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, presentation in the Duffy Lewis Gymnasium, grad night at Magic Mountain and commencement at the First Church of Nazarene. Presentation is always a special event: our seniors are honored in front of the student body and all Principal continued on page 2

of our students get to meet the recipients of the Golden Diploma – alumni who are marking 50 years since their graduation from La Salle. Additionally, our senior senators honor members of our community with the Signum Fidei – Sign of Faith – award. Honorees are chosen because of their service and dedication to the mission and traditions of La Salle College Preparatory and for their modeling the spirit of our Founder, Saint John Baptist de La Salle. The following people were honored this year: Ozzie Barrero, Pat Bonacci, Anthony Fernandes, Sonya Froio, Owen Hou, Michael Keating, Carol Lee, Jeff Niemiec, Jane Osick, Tim Pendergast, Pam Wagner, Kate Williams and Marcia Yu.

We Say Good Bye

As with every school year, the seniors are not the only members of our community to move on. Each year also brings changes in our faculty and staff. This year six members of our faculty and staff will be moving on from La Salle. Mr. John Blackstock ’67 is retiring from full-time work at La Salle after 18 years as part of our advancement team. Throughout his time at La Salle he has overseen the production of our many publications, including The ParentNewsletter, Lancer Magazine, and most recently our beautiful yearbook, the Centurion. We will miss seeing him with his camera at all of our events, but wish him much joy in retirement. Mrs. Yona Han has helped guide and develop the Global Education program since its inception. She assisted all our global students as they moved through high school and onto college and now wants to spend more time with her own daughter. She will be missed by the students and families she has worked with during her time here. Mrs. Carol Lee took on our choral class this last year after spending the last few years working as a volunteer and clinician with our instrumental music program. She has also decided to put more focus on her son this upcoming year. We will miss her, but hope she and her youngest son will be back at La Salle in the future.

June / July 2019

Mr. Ian Schuler ’11 has been supporting our Arts and Media department over the last few years in a number of different ways including long-term substitute, teaching assistant and theatre production assistant. He will be pursuing his credential and masters degree in order to become a full-time art teacher. We wish him much luck and success in his pursuits. Mrs. Debby Sinnette-Baird is leaving La Salle after 16 years. Our long time Learning Specialist, Debby also led our Guidance and Counseling Department and was instrumental in starting our Mentor program. She began her transition into private practice this last year, going part time here at La Salle and now is moving full-time into private practice. She will be greatly missed by her colleagues and students. Ms. Glenda Smith has been guiding our Instrumental Music program first as an assistant and then as its director, but will now be moving home to Georgia to be closer to her own mother. The quality of musicianship Ms. Smith brings out of her students is terrific and she will most certainly be greatly missed. And of course, we will be losing Dr. Gray to retirement. Dr. Gray has led La Salle for the last 20 years and his work and dedication to La Salle, its students and our community can be felt all over the school. He oversaw not only physical transformations of the school, but also led on important initiatives, such as the development of our speech and debate team, the Presidential Merit Scholarship program, and most recently our brand refresh. His shoes will certainly be hard one’s to fill, but we are grateful for his leadership and wish him much joy in retirement.

Thank You

As we conclude another academic year, I want to say thank you for entrusting your students to our care and working in partnership with all of us here at La Salle to educate your students. As Principal, I am blessed to be surrounded by a terrific and talented group of educators and support staff who work hard and are diligent in caring for all of our students.

The Summer Packet

For our returning families, we will be mailing to you our summer packet of information in mid-July. In the meantime, please be sure to check our website for the summer reading list, as well as the 2019-2020 booklist. Returning students received their preliminary class schedules the last week of school; freshmen schedules will be mailed out this month. Please use this to determine which books you should be purchasing. I hope all of you have a restful and rejuvenating summer. I look forward to seeing all of our students on the first day of school on Thursday, August 15!

June / July 2019

La Salle Matters I hope that these early weeks of summer are treating you well and that the pace of your daily activities is slower and relaxing. The summer quiet at La Salle is already over. Our hallways are full of exciting students who are participating in the numerous opportunities, academic and athletic, that our Summer Programs provide. We also have the exuberant noise that comes from the Kids Klub young ones who are part of the summer options on our campus. I do hope that as these summer weeks continue, you put aside significant time for family-filled activities and personal time.

Patrick Bonacci, AFSC, P'94,'97 Acting President

As you know, my personal summer plans experienced a significant shift in April when I was asked by our Board of Trustees to assume the position of Acting President of La Salle College Preparatory, due to the health necessitated retirement of Dr. Richard Gray. I agreed to this position until a permanent President is selected. And, I will certainly keep you well informed over the new school year as to the progress of that selection process. I sincerely thank my friend and colleague, Dr. Richard Gray, for his 20 years of outstanding dedication to our La Salle community. There is no one I know who better understood what La Salle should be than Dr. Gray. Over his 20 years of vibrant leadership fundamental changes and improvements have occurred that have solidified La Salle as the outstanding school of excellence that it is for our students and their families. Thank you Richard! For those of you who only know me through my position of Vice-President for Mission, let me briefly share my background. I am now entering my 48th year in Catholic School Education. I accepted a position as Dean of Students at La Salle in the fall of 1985 after finishing my 14th year as teacher and principal of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary School, which is down the street from La Salle. Skipping through a lot of other teaching and administrative positions, I was named principal by the school’s first President, Philip Clarke and I held that position for nearly 20 years. I was also extremely honored in 2006 to receive my Letter of Affiliation (AFSC) from the Superior General of the De La Salle Christian Brothers. Along with my various administrative responsibilities, I was consistently a teaching faculty member of either the Social Studies or Religious Studies Departments until three years ago. And, I am still an academic advisor. In addition, this is not,

4

as they say, “my first rodeo” when it comes to being the school’s President. For the three semesters that preceded the arrival of Dr. Gray, I was both the President and Principal of La Salle. It is this last point that my first ParentNewsletter article as Acting President, is truly all about. It is essential that you know that this unexpected retirement of Dr. Gray is significant; but it is not in any manner a crisis for La Salle. Through the exceptional academic and school leadership of Mrs. Kassakhian, in conjunction with the other talented and experienced administrators and truly fantastic educators and support staff that La Salle is blessed to have, your students will continue to receive the highest quality education and care. This education is firmly rooted in a Lasallian educational tradition that extends back for more than 300 years. As you recall from previous newsletter articles from me and others, in February the school completed a three day visit from our District’s Visiting Team. This visit was the culmination of an internal accreditation of our school that began in the 2017-2018 school year – the process is called the Lasallian Catholic Assessment Process (LCAP). In the visiting Team’s final report, Mr. Charles Legendre, AFSC, Director, Office of Evangelization and Catechesis for the San Francisco New Orleans District, the chairperson of the visiting team, wrote the following statement:

This visit to La Salle has provoked much in me. I have an overwhelming sense of admiration and gratitude for religious studies teachers and campus ministers who have enabled students to remain engaged in faith life issues and practice. I am struck by the vitality of the culture of La Salle. I find La Salle to be an upbeat, involved, caring, challenging community where no one falls through the cracks. I look forward to my “extended” time with you and with our students. And I guarantee you that the next President of La Salle College Preparatory will be chosen from a distinguished and extensive group of qualified candidates. I know that because the reputation of La Salle as a school of choice and as a community of supportive families is exceptional and thus the Board of Trustees will be inundated with highly qualified and distinguished candidates. As Mr. Legendre correctly stated above, La Salle is upbeat, involved and caring and our culture is certainly one of strength and vitality. And, I know without a doubt that all involved in the spiritual and educational experience of our students are dedicated to making sure that no one falls through the cracks. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of any assistance and I look forward to my ongoing association with all of you.

Class of 2019

Congratulations to the Class of 2019! We wish this class all the success in college and in life. We very much enjoyed working with each graduate and look forward to staying in touch!

Class of 2020 Be aware of SAT Reasoning and Subject Test Dates

In May, we completed our meetings with all juniors. Our students received a list of prospective colleges on Naviance to explore and prioritize by their level of interest. Summer is a good time to research, visit colleges, and work on a personal statement. We highly recommend all students to narrow their college list down to 6-8 schools by the fall.

Fall Events

The College Planning Survey for Seniors will be available on Naviance in mid-July. It will be due by September 6. In the fall, College Counselors will meet with each student of the class of 2020 to review their college list in preparation for the college application period. To minimize the number of meetings for our parents, the Senior College Information Night will be held on the same evening as our Back-to-School-Night on Wednesday, August 28. Please save the date to attend this very important event. Parents and students are expected to attend. During this meeting, we will discuss the application protocol/paperwork, letters of recommendation, essay writing tips, and lots of other pertinent information.

College Visits

Visiting colleges during the school year is one of the most valuable experiences in the college planning process. Not only does it help your student determine whether a college is a good fit, it also sends a strong message to the college admission officer that your student is seriously considering their college. Looking at next year’s calendar, the best time to plan an out-of-town visit is during mid-October, as there will be no school on Monday, October 14 (Columbus Day) and Wednesday, October 16 (Standardized testing for all non-seniors).

12

June / July 2019 Standardized Testing

All members of the class of 2020 should have taken the ACT and/or the SAT by this time. Students who plan to apply to certain colleges should also take two SAT Subject tests in the fall. A list of colleges that require/ recommend SAT Subject Tests can be found at http://www.compassprep.com/subjecttest-requirements-and-recommendations/. Although the UCs no longer require two SAT Subject Tests, they are still strongly recommended for engineering and science majors. A list of recommended SAT Subject Tests for the UCs can be found at http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/freshman/requirements/ examination-requirement/SAT-subject-tests/ index.html. The fall exam dates are as follows: SAT Reasoning and Subject Tests: August 24 October 5 November 2 December 7 Please note that not all Subject Tests are offered on all dates ACT: September 14 October 26 December 14 Register early! Registration deadlines are usually five weeks before the test dates.

Class of 2021

The class of 2021 will be taking the PSAT on Wednesday, October 16. PSAT/NMSQT stands for Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. It is a standardized test that provides first hand practice for the SAT. It also gives Juniors a chance to enter the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) scholarship programs.

All Juniors will also be taking the ACT at La Salle on February 8, 2020 for no charge. They will register for the ACT at school in the fall so there is nothing to do on your part. In addition, most juniors will be taking the SAT for the first time in the spring of 2020. If the family is considering a test-prep course for the SAT, we suggest that you choose a program that finishes close to the test date. Students who are involved in a winter sport, theatre or have a full schedule during the months of January, February, and March might consider taking a test prep course over this summer and take the SAT in August 2019. Use Naviance! Please remind your student to add their school and non-school activities and awards they received during freshman and sophomore years in “My Resume”. This is a great place to gather information and keep it organized for the college application process. Also, complete the ‘Career Interest Profiler’ assessment. Successful completion of this assessment will generate a report that will provide your student with important information about ‘matching occupations’. Your student will learn about careers that fit their characteristics, their personal strengths and blind spots, how they negotiate in their daily life, and a host of other useful information.

Class of 2022

This year, the Class of 2022 registered on Naviance during Mentor period. Naviance is a college planning website where students can research colleges, their interests and careers. Your student can start keeping track of their school and non-school activities and awards they received during freshman year in “My Resume”. Naviance is a great place for students to organize and keep track of their information for college applications. Parents also have a personal log-in. Please contact your college counselor if you have not received your unique registration code for Naviance. College Center Continued on page 15

John Blackstock Retires...Sort of

John Blackstock '67 Director of Communications Editor, ParentNewsletter

After 18 years at La Salle I have decided to retire... almost. La Salle has been a vital part of my life for nearly 60 years. I played basketball, ran track, drew cartoons for The Lance newspaper, worked on the yearbook and painted posters for our many sock hops. I also started the CCBS, the Council of Christian Brothers Schools, now known as LSL (Lasallian Student Leaders). La Salle gave me a great education in so many ways. Following graduation I attended Saint Mary's College, earned a BA in Art and Communications and played football and rugby for the Gaels and the US team. After eight years as a "Brother's Boy," I am truly dedicated to the ideals and principles of Saint John Baptist de La Salle. In the mid 90s I was President of the La Salle Alumni Association and was intricately involved with the securing of funds from the Provincial to start football and coeducation, a decision which has proved to be a turning point in our history. Following college I started my own advertising agency, but after 35 years in the business I was looking for a meaninful challenge. That quest took me back to my alma mater as Alumni Coordinator, webmaster and Director of Communications. We even rebooted Lancer Television (LTV). I have shot over 1.25 million photos of our outstanding students, faculty and amazing school events. I loved producing Lancer Magazine, writing stories about our fantastic students and alumni and producing the ParentNewsletter every month. This is my last issue as editor. These past two years I have enjoyed working with a talented and diverse group of students to produce the Centurion yearbook, and I have been asked to return and produce one more yearbook, so I am not quite retired. I have always been proud of my long association with La Salle and very proud of our outstanding students and what they have accomplished. In the almost two decades since I started here I have been fortunate to work with many wonderful parents, faculty, coaches and administrators. These people have helped make La Salle a better place, and I thank them from the bottom of my heart.

Saint John Baptist de La Salle pray for us. Live Jesus in our hearts...forever.

Pope urges Lasallians to care for discarded through education

Pope Francis invites the Brothers of the Christian Schools to continue in their passion to educate those discarded by society and to promote a “culture of the resurrection that offers hope for a new life. The Brothers of the Christian Schools, are commemorating the th 300 Anniversary of the death of their Founder, St. John Baptist de La Salle. He established the Institute of religious brothers in France, in 1680, to provide quality education for children, especially for the poor.

the teacher, and innovative teaching methods. Right to education Considering these three elements separately, Pope Francis said de La Salle’s vision of the school made clear that all people, even the poor, have a right to education. “He gave life to a community of lay people to carry out his ideal, and was certain that the Church cannot remain a stranger to the social contradictions of its times,” he said. Most education in 17th century France was done by priests. The formation of the laity as teachers was therefore revolutionary, and the Lasallians became a type of “lay monk” dedicated to teaching poor children.

In an address on Thursday, May 16, 2019 Pope Francis praised St. La Salle as “a pioneer in the fi eld of education, who created an innovative education system for his time.” The Pope said the Saint’s legacy is still remarkable today for its vision of the school, the concept of

Review Our Planned Gifts Opportunities

The 2018-2019 academic year has drawn to a close, and we proudly congratulate the class of 2019. This is the 60th anniversary of the 1st graduating class of our School. Our recent graduates are headed off to a most impressive list of universities and will be pursuing courses of study representing a wide variety of disciplines. This is also the first graduating class of Presidential Merit Scholars, and these graduates are matriculating to some of the most prestigious universities across the country. The La Salle College Preparatory campus will be very busy during the summer months as new, veteran and potential future students will be a part of the many athletic and academic activities provided. In August, we welcome the members of the class of 2023! Planned Gifts are an integral part of funding for the mid and long-term needs of our School. Unlike traditional gifting to our School, Planned Gifts encompass a wide variety of opportunities, many of which provide benefits to the donor other than a current income tax deduction. Some of these more common Gifts have the following characteristics:

18

Diversification of one’s portfolio

Leaving a legacy without giving up current assets

Reduction of one’s income tax liability and the potential to eliminate capital gains taxes on appreciated assets. Leaving a gift of appreciated assets (stocks, securities, and real estate held over one year) allows for a tax deduction of the full value of the asset while avoiding the income tax hit that would be paid if the asset was sold

Providing current and future streams of partially taxfree income oftentimes at rates that are higher than current conservative market rates

June / July 2019

Meeting one’s required minimum IRA distribution (for taxpayers at or over the age of 70 ½) while supporting La Salle College Preparatory

We congratulate the class of 2019 and send them off with our best wishes. Members of our community are very proud of what we have at our School. We should bear in mind the importance of maintaining, nurturing and advancing the foundation of our School and providing an environment to enhance it for the students of the future. Consideration of a Planned Gift is a great way to be a part of this worthy effort. Please review the Planned Giving articles in future publications of both the Parent Newsletter and Lancer Magazine for ongoing updates in the Planned Giving Program. La Salle College Preparatory can provide more information, both generically and specifi cally, regarding the benefi ts available through Planned Giving. For more information, please contact Jon Keates, the Vice President for Institutional Advancement at 626.696.4344.

Matching Gifts

If you are an employee of a matching gift company, we would love to work with you. This is an easy way to raise funds for La Salle. If you are not sure if your company participates, you can ask your employer or contact: Tara Morales at: tmorales@lasallehs.org or call 626.696.4381.

The Lasallian Educator of the Year

By Courtney Kassakhian, Principal

St. John Baptist De La Salle Patron Saint of all teachers

20

Jackie Robinson said, “A life is not important except for the impact it has on the lives of others.” At our Founder’s Day Mass we celebrate St. John Baptist De La Salle whose life had a tremendous and positive impact on so many throughout the world and over the centuries. As faculty and staff here at La Salle, we are always trying to follow in his footsteps and serve our students as best we can. To celebrate that, the Lasallian Educator of the Year is given annually to a faculty, staff member or administrator, chosen by their peers, who exemplifies the qualities of St. La Salle… specifically meeting the following criteria: A dedicated and committed individual who is a qualified educator, A person who understands their own dignity as a child of God so that he or she can pass this on to his or her students, A person who cherishes and cares for their students like an older brother or sister, And, above all, someone who is committed to a life of faith and prayer so that they can teach their students in the spiritual life, instilling living values. This year’s honoree who will join the ranks of our previously recognized Educators of the Year, without a doubt, exemplifies the criterion I shared with you. Those who nominated this year’s recipient described our honoree this way: • This person shows visible care and concern for their students They are present at many extra-curricular activities outside of school hours, very active in the spiritual life of the school, and always encouraging others to participate. • They are a dedicated educator, always thinking about how to help students become closer to God. They care about their students so much. • They have a great Lasallian spirit and are never ending in their giving to La Salle and our students. • Caring and compassionate, this person demands the best of their students and really shines on retreats.

June / July 2019 • Music for the masses, religion department chairperson, and senior service co-ordinator. Mrs. Pam Wagner joined La Salle’s faculty following years of work in parishes and at another Catholic high school in the area. Her knowledge of and affection for St. John Baptist de la Salle and his teachings were a significant part of what drew her to La Salle and so it is no surprise that during her time here she has followed in his footsteps through the teaching of her students, leadership of the religious studies department, music for the masses, and our senior service program, and that you can often see her in the stands or the audience supporting La Salle students. We are very pleased to honor Mrs. Pam Wagner as the 2019 Lasallian Educator of the Year. See St. Joseph Award on page 23

St. Joseph School Service Award – 2019 St. Joseph has long been associated with the Institute of the Brothers of Christian Schools and is in fact the Patron Saint of the International Institute. Each year the St. Joseph Service Award honors a faculty member, staff member, or administrator who goes above and beyond in service to the school community in general. The following criterion were used in selecting this year’s recipient who manifests daily actions that support the mission of the school • Demonstrates a steady commitment to fellow workers and students by exhibiting patience, understanding and humor. • Is flexible with one’s time and is willing to assist others. • Participates in the co-curricular life of the school • Is selfless in not expecting any recognition

Mrs. Kathy Sanchez – Fitzgerald. St. Joseph School Service Award

Different members of this school community described this year’s recipient of the St. Joseph School Service Award. • This person seems to know every student by name and is always kind, helpful and positive in her interactions with them. She is also very friendly and helpful to the faculty and staff. • She is never too busy to smile and greet you with a kind remark. • She is the mother of the school, always giving a warm welcome smile. She supports all sports and co-curricular activities, and tries to help anyone in any way she can. This year’s recipient of the St. Joseph School Service Award is Mrs. Kathy Sanchez – Fitzgerald. Affectionately known to students and parents as Ms. Kathy, Mrs. Sanchez-Fitzgerald is for many people, the face of La Salle and she takes that responsibility very seriously. Anyone who has interacted with her knows that her work at La Salle is much more than a job for her. We are incredibly lucky to have her here at La Salle and I am delighted to present her with the 2019 St. Joseph School Service Award.
