ANNUAL REPORT

2019-2020 Financial Review

@LaSallePas WWW.LASALLEHS.ORG 1

BETTER TOGETHER Dear La Salle Community, On behalf of the Board of Trustees, Board of Regents, faculty and staff, I’d like to express my sincere thanks and appreciation to each of you for your love and support of La Salle College Preparatory. While this school year was filled with unprecedented challenges and change, it was also a year of reflection, understanding and learning. Reflecting upon the importance of faith, family and community. Understanding the tremendous amount of work and effort our students, teachers and parents had to put forth to be successful. Learning about the different ways to deliver a strong, robust curriculum and educational experience under some of the most challenging of circumstances. We continue to pray for the many that have suffered - whether through loss of loved ones, loss of jobs, or loss of our normal daily routines. There were times when it felt challenging to feel hopeful. I found myself referencing a quote from our founder, St. John the Baptist de La Salle, many times throughout this past year - “Often remind yourself that God is with you.” During a time with so much unknown, it’s possible to feel alone - that you are navigating this by yourself. But remembering that God is always with us helped me see beyond the tragedy of the moment. I have seen so many examples of our Lasallian community

banding together to support one another. From supporting our amazing educators who had to reinvent education overnight, to our parents who stepped up to support their children and the school, and to the community, who continued to give back to the school with their time, talents, and resources - this past year has really proven that we are truly, better together. This issue of Lancer Magazine is dedicated to our theme Better Together, where you will find examples of our educators, students, parents, and alumni living the Lasallian motto of Learn, Serve, Lead. This is truly a special community. In being Better Together, our athletic programs persevered tremendously, bringing home a number of league championships and individual accolades. Our arts students performed magnificently and expressed their work masterfully, despite the challenges of virtual rehearsals and physical separation from one another and their classrooms. We bid a fond farewell to outgoing principal Mrs. Courtney Kassakhian, who served La Salle with professionalism and excellence for over five years. In turn, we are thrilled to have selected Mr. Jamal Adams as our next principal, who will help lead our school to future success and sustainability, keeping our students first and our core principles close to our hearts and

minds. These examples of success and hope are just a fraction of the wonderful things our students, faculty, staff and families have accomplished over the last year. I am so immensely proud for all that has been accomplished this year, showing first-hand the grit, tenacity and commitment our community has to a quality educational experience, no matter what the circumstances. As we close out the 20202021 school year, our school board and leadership team has begun to identify areas of focus in the coming years, that will help to set our school apart and become sustainable in many important areas, while remaining rooted and true to our Five Core Principles. It is critical to safeguard the school for the future and position us for long-lasting sustainability and success. As we’ve learned, there are things we can plan for, and things we cannot. I want to ensure the school is well-prepared for both. It’s imperative we continue to evaluate our strategic priorities and continue to work in the best interest of our students and the community we serve. Demographic Sustainability: Becoming more inclusive and representative of the employee and student population. Environmental Sustainability: Incorporating sustainability practices into teaching and routine; becoming greener and less wasteful. Financial & Philanthropic Sustainability: Becoming more efficient and develop new and innovative donor relations.

Global Sustainability: Becoming more networked locally and internationally, preparing our students for global work and career environments. Programmatic Sustainability: Becoming more focused on the skills and values that the marketplace of the 21st century will seek and reward. I remain committed to keeping our entire school community informed about the progress we make in these important areas. Your perspectives, thoughts and ideas are vital to our continued success and I thank you in advance for your willingness to share and collaborate with me. We are now experiencing glimmers of hope after a year filled with so much unknown. I am thrilled to see our students, teachers, faculty, and parents on campus once again. Throughout the past year, we’ve shown we can endure. In the hardest moment of our lives, we found a way - La Salle found a way - to adapt. We managed to get through it and proved we are resilient. We kept an open mind when obstacles presented themselves and we proved we are better together. I am proud of this school and our community. I thank you for your love and support of La Salle College Preparatory and continue to pray for each and every one of you now and always.

Sincerely,

PERRY K. MARTIN PRESIDENT

COUNSELING DEPARTMENT EXPANDS

MENTAL HEALTH PROGRAMS By: Carolyn Neuhausen ’04

In the last year, La Salle’s students have lived through a tumultuous time; one rife with a deadly worldwide pandemic, an economic crisis, a contentious political season and a summer of social unrest. Now, more than ever, the mental health and well-being of students and members of the Lasallian community are so critically important. For the past 25 years, La Salle has recognized the importance of offering counseling and support to its students. The School has prioritized mental health and developed a robust counseling department as part of its mission to support students’ holistic growth - mentally, physically and spiritually. As part of its ongoing dedication to supporting students’ mental health, La Salle’s counseling program has grown significantly, says Director of Counseling, Tam Ly. “Mental health is integral to the well-being of the whole child, whether in COVID or not, we must deliver lessons and incorporate a social-emotional component for all of our students. Adolescence is a time for students to gain independence, explore and form their identity, develop skills that will make them contributing members to the community, and grow as an individual. Mental health is the foundation for all of these aspects to be possible. It goes back to Maslow’s hierarchy needs, we need to make sure the students feel safe and are well prepared to support their on-campus and off-campus growth,” says Ly. One of the newest focuses within the mental health program is managing the unique anxieties and stressors of the COVID era, where normal life has been disrupted and students are

challenged to learn through screens instead of in-person instruction. “We’ve talked about COVID coping skills and how to explore loss. Peer connection is paramount at this age. Teens are more independent and build their identity through their extra curricular activities, performance at school, their friendship groups, so we talk about the loss they are feeling,” Ly said. Students can also partake in the Healthy Choices Curriculum, where they learn about setting boundaries, negotiating conflict, and relationship building, among other life skills. The number of COVID specific mental health lessons has quadrupled over the last year and Ly believes that the Healthy Choices Curriculum is vital to La Salle’s students, pandemic or no pandemic. “ I think this program is relevant and important no matter what - part of developing teens as a whole. Post - COVID we’ll continue to adjust and adapt our support,” she said. To keep students engaged, the counseling department brings in guest speakers who share different perspectives on mental health topics. To help students better understand and manage the grief and loss that has become a part of the COVID era, the department invited Dr. Justin Barker ’05 to share a presentation he called “Building Your Mental Health Toolkit During the Pandemic.” In this presentation, students were taught the benefits of journaling, meditation, mindfulness, and self compassion affirmations. Another program under the counseling department’s mental health curriculum is the Mentor program. The School places 5

incoming freshmen from different schools in groups of 16. These small groups meet regularly with the same teacher which helps foster a smaller and more personal sense of community. Keeping the same teacher for all four years provides students with consistency and stability throughout their time at La Salle.

development. “We have a wonderful team and an amazing relationship with teachers and parents. I don’t think the work we do would be possible without that collaboration,” says Ly.

The counseling program’s benefactors go beyond the students themselves. The counseling department is invested in the health of LaSallian families, recognizing that the age of COVID has been particularly stressful on parents as well. Counselors share crisis and therapeutic resources with parents to help them manage the unique stressors of working and managing their childrens’ education from home. These resources are robust and available to teens and parents outside of the school day, offering 24/7 support. To build rapport with parents, counselors host a coffee session and meet with parents once a quarter to check in with the whole family. “Parents are key partners in wrapping around the child and ensuring their well-being. It is important for parents to listen to their child, keep an open dialogue, and stay connected with how their child is doing both in and out of the home. Parents know their child best and can offer them comfort, encouragement, and nurture their child’s

MAKING A

DIFFERENCE

By: Carolyn Neuhausen ’04 When Cara Dimkich ’98, made the life-changing decision to offer one of her kidneys to a beloved neighbor, she embodied the Gospel of Matthew’s famous verse, “Thou shalt love the Lord, thy God with all thy heart... thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.” This selfless decision would, at any other time, be considered courageous, but during a global pandemic, it became downright heroic.

Cara and her family have always been extremely close, so when her sister Nicole ’95, moved to Dallas, Cara and her mother followed suit. While in Dallas, she has cultivated a close-knit circle of friends including neighbors Clee Ceasar, an ex-Special Forces Major, and his wife Sarah, who have become part of Cara’s extended family and Coronavirus quarantine pod.

Dimkich, is a positive and energetic marketing professional who navigates life with a simple “why not” philosophy. Growing up, Cara’s family was involved in service work with the Ronald McDonald House and the Special Olympics and she fondly remembers her time visiting Pasadena’s Union Station with La Salle educator Ed O’Connor. Forming bonds with teachers at La Salle is one of her favorite memories of high school, and she recounts the passion civics teacher Sabatino Manente shared while on a high school trip with students to Washington D.C. for President Clinton’s second inauguration. “Mr. Manente is a character and a legend,” she said, adding “none of my friends in public schools had that connection to teachers who were crazy fun.”

Around Christmas of 2019, Cara was speaking with Clee about his ongoing search for an organ match. He explained that a few years prior, his first kidney was removed after doctors found a tumorous growth, and his one remaining kidney failed to sustain his health. From that point forward, he lived on dialysis and was in search of a kidney match. Unfortunately, his sister’s health ruled her out and his son had the same blood type as his wife, making Clee’s options for a donor few and far between. Little did he know that conversation would change his life. Cara knew she wanted to help and got tested to see if she was a match. She learned she was not only a blood 7

match but also a 97% tissue match as well. “It’s crazy that someone not blood-related is that close a match. Almost like it was written in the stars,” Dimkich said. After months of extensive testing and blood pulls, Cara’s doctors were hopeful she could undergo surgery. But two issues cropped up causing her doctors to delay the surgery. The doctors recommended she lose thirty pounds to ensure she was healthy enough to undergo surgery. So Dimkich tweaked her diet, ate mindfully and worked out on her Peloton every day and after two months, hit her goal weight. And although she, her family, and Clee had been very careful to follow COVID precautions, Cara’s nieces came down with mild cases of COVID, necessitating even more testing and waiting before getting the all clear for the surgery.

LIFELONG FRIENDS

In September of 2020, Cara underwent the laparoscopic procedure. The initial recovery took less than five days and Cara describes it as fairly uneventful. Although hygienic protocols have been heightened across nearly every sector of life due to COVID, safety and hygiene are stressed so highly in transplant situations that COVID concerns played less a role than one might think. And now, less than a year after surgery, both Clee and Cara are doing well and continue to be monitored by a team of doctors. Dimkich’s remaining kidney is back to functioning at 75% and will likely return to 85-90%, which is average for a person with two working kidneys. But as much as an act of love and service Dimkich’s decision was, it follows a life spent giving time and energy to non-profit and service causes that are close to her heart. Cara continues to give back to her local community, volunteering at Hugs Cafe in Dallas, a non-profit that provides employment opportunities to those who are intellectually or physically disabled. She enjoys helping the staff while they gain life skills and make a living crafting sandwiches, soups and goodies for cafe patrons. And that light-hearted, pragmatic sensibility of Cara’s? It extends to the advice she would give La Salle students and alums making their way through life. “Keep an open mind. It’s a broad statement but could be applied in so many ways. If someone needs a kidney, keep an open mind. If someone in your family has different political beliefs, keep an open mind. It’s the biggest takeaway that’s helped me in life. You never know what could happen. Things might not be what they could be, but keep an open mind.” 8

AMAZING EDUCATORS

BUILDING BRIDGES TO

NEW EXPERIENCES By: Elizabeth Kalmus ’04

Jeffrey Niemiec never considered a career in education. With a mechanical engineering background, he spent six years at an engineering firm in Pennsylvania. But one day, fate stepped in. In addition to engineering, Niemiec was coaching speech and debate on the east coast. La Salle heard about his qualifications and offered him the position of the head coach of their speech and debate team. In 2017, he accepted and moved to California. In the past few years, Niemiec has led the team as they have competed nationally, and won many prestigious awards. When COVID hit, Niemiec wasn’t quite sure how the season would unfold. However, after a few weeks of tournament cancelations, the program moved online. Niemiec says, “The online competitions actually opened up new possibilities. The team used to attend roughly 28 competitions in person, but because the competitions went virtual, the team was able to compete in over 40 competitions in 2020 and 2021. They were also able to compete virtually at Yale and Princeton, among others.” The speech and debate team is doing better than ever - qualifying two different teams to the Tournament of Champions (ToC) in Silver Public Forum Debate. They received their most-ever qualifiers in speech to the Tournament of Champions with five members earning a spot. Additionally, the team secured one of the four total spots for the East LA District of Nationals in Public Forum Debate. Seven members of the team qualified in speech to the National Individual Event Tournament of Champions (NIETOC). One of the freshman team members qualified - something nearly unheard of as a freshman. The team also had a senior reach the distinction of “Academic All-American” this year, an honor less than two percent of speech and debaters qualify for. The team has a goal to qualify for three of the four major Nationals each year and just recently achieved that goal for the fourth consecutive year. While La Salle continues to rack up awards, Niemiec wants to stress the speech and debate club goes far beyond

winning awards. “Learning how to effectively wield your voice is the most important skill a person can have,” says Niemiec. “Regardless of what profession a person has, they need to communicate with someone else. And utilizing your voice is one way to make a positive tangible impact on this world.” Although the role of speech and debate head coach can be time consuming, it hasn’t stopped Niemiec from wanting to contribute even more to La Salle’s state-ofthe-art curriculum offerings. The opening of La Salle’s STEAM Lab in 2018 gave Niemiec an idea. “I wanted to help bring engineering courses to La Salle’s course catalog. But not just engineering courses the way they’re traditionally taught to high school students. Real courses, where we could talk about the real-life situations the students would encounter with a career in engineering.” Niemiec felt his experience as a mechanical engineer would benefit La Salle’s students. “I wanted students to have the opportunity to learn about engineering and what they’d need to know beyond high school and college. To develop courses where they would learn and train on programs and software they historically couldn’t get until in the field.” La Salle recognized the importance of such an exceptional offering and hired Niemiec full-time in 2018 to begin developing courses under an engineering platform, starting with a course called Introduction to Architecture and Engineering. Niemiec has continued developing the engineering program and more courses are now offered, giving La Salle’s students access to an elite engineering curriculum. New this year, Niemiec helped develop a course involving the AutoCAD software program, the leading engineering designer platform used globally. The Technical Drafting in AutoCAD class is a groundbreaking course and one of the first to be offered 9

at the high school level. “When you leave college with an engineering degree, every engineering firm knows they will need to teach you how to use AutoCAD. It is not really taught in college courses. With this course at La Salle, students get first-hand training in the leading software program in the engineering world. That skill alone makes them ahead of the curve when starting a career as an engineer or architect.” COVID-19 hasn’t stopped Niemiec from getting students involved in engineering. “It’s a hands-on course, but we made it work.” He dedicated himself to ensuring his students didn’t lose focus on their projects while home-schooling during the pandemic. Niemiec created care packages for all of his students at the beginning of the school year, based on what supplies they needed to create their ideas. “Whether they told me they needed wood or glue, or if they needed help figuring out how to submit a video of their project, I would collect all the materials requested and create packages for each of them, leaving them outside where the students could come and pick them up. We have continued using this system for everything, including picking up materials and submitting and dropping off projects.” Despite having to conduct traditionally hands-on courses online, Niemiec says the projects were just as impressive and engaging. A student recently submitted a bridge he built with 100 popsicle sticks and hot glue. The class watched, as he placed 475 pounds on his bridge, resulting in the highest weight load that Niemiec has seen in any of his courses to date. “It provides them with a place to create and construct with their peers and to offer and receive encouragement. So even though we didn’t have access to the STEAM lab, the students were still able to create engineering marvels. It is just all the more exciting to see what the students will create now that we’re back in the classrooms.” 10

ATHLETICS

ATHLETICS DEPARTMENT CREATES PROGRAM TO HELP STUDENTS COPE WITH PANDEMIC When the decision was made that La Salle students and faculty would not be returning to in-person learning in the fall, Athletic Director Brian Walsh realized there was a need and desire to offer all students an opportunity to be physically active. On September 14th, he and the Athletics department launched The Health & Wellness through Fitness Program. Walsh says, “The program was created in response to the pandemic and the resulting impact that it had on the high school sports calendar and the overall physical and mental health of our entire student body.” The program was focused on various aspects of strength and conditioning, agility and skill development, speed training, core exercises, and dynamic stretching. Between 125-150 students participated in two to three workout sessions each week. The safety guidelines outlined by all public health agencies were implemented and followed including regular social distancing, mask-wearing, sanitization of equipment, stringent hydration procedures, and daily health screenings.

BOYS BASKETBALL

BOYS SOCCER

Walsh says, “This program benefited our students in multiple ways. The physical aspect allowed students to get out of the house, interact with other students and staff, and relieve some of the stress that we have all experienced over the past year. It played a significant role in the overall well-being of those students that chose to participate.” Now that the School is open and sports have returned, Walsh says the program has been suspended because the majority of the students involved in the program have transitioned to their sport-specific activities. “We are currently running 20 athletic programs simultaneously, which is crazy to think about when normally a typical season of sports would have five to seven sports running simultaneously. I think all the work we put into creating and developing the Health & Wellness program played a role in our ability to pivot to the sport-specific activities when they became allowable,” he says. The constant communication amongst our head coaches leading up to the transition to sport-specific activities played a major role in our ability to do so successfully. The tremendous amount of success our teams have experienced in the first two months of our return can be attributed to our programming and preparation.

ANNUAL IMPACT REPORT

While La Salle makes every effort to ensure the accuracy of the information presented, there may be errors in gift information listed. Please email the Institutional Advancement office with any errors you encounter. FY 2020 includes July 1, 2019 - June 30, 2020.

Dear Friends, On behalf of the entire La Salle community, I am pleased to share the 2019 – 2020 Annual Impact Report that demonstrates the outstanding generosity and support from our alumni, parents, grandparents, friends, and organizations. Like many schools over the past year, La Salle was forced to pivot and address the needs of our students and families in a very short period of time. We are truly blessed to have loyal and dedicated benefactors that allowed the school to meet the ever-changing needs of our students, parents, faculty, and staff. With the leadership of the Trustees, Regents, Alumni, and School Administration, we were able to assist every family who was financially affected during the pandemic with no student leaving the school due to the inability to pay tuition. As a Lasallian school guided by the teachings of St. John Baptist de La Salle, we continued to nurture and inspire our community in reimagined ways through virtual lessons, prayer services, social activities, and

health and wellness programs. The resiliency of our students during this time motivated all the faculty and staff to do whatever was within our means to deliver the best possible academic and co-curricular program possible. It goes without saying that none of this would have been possible without your philanthropic support to our mission. At this time, I invite you to read the report and join us in celebration and thanks to the over 1,500 names listed in the various categories. The spirit of generosity is alive and well at La Salle and I am very thankful to everyone who takes the time to participate in supporting our most deserving students. In the words of St. La Salle, “You can perform miracles by touching the hearts of those entrusted care.” Amen.

Adopt A Family program celebrates a Silver Anniversary Despite the pandemic and distance learning, La Salle held our 25th Annual Adopt-A-Family Drive. The School community adopted 50 children and teens from Hillsides Home for Children, 5 military families from Camp Pendleton, and 18 families in need through PUSD. The drive was a huge success thanks to our students, faculty/staff, families and alumni that donated during this challenging time! Thanks to the 111 alumni who donated to our 12th Annual Alumni Adopt-A-Family Christmas Drive the Alumni Association was able to fulfill Christmas Wishes for 3 needy families and 12 military familiesmore than we had originally set out to help! Since the annual Alumni Wrapping Party with Santa could not happen due to COVID, 9 alumni volunteered to wrap all of the presents in their own homes complete with ribbons and bows. Another example of how, even in the toughest of times, La Salle alumni embrace the Lasallian Mission of “Enter to Learn, Leave to Serve.”

BOXES OF LOVE

Despite COVID-19 and distance learning, the La Salle Community filled 150 Thanksgiving food boxes for needy military families and raised $3,750 for each box to include a $25 voucher for the purchase of a turkey and additional dinner trimmings at the commissary on base. In our 10 years of participating in this annual Boxes of Love service project, this was our most successful one to date which just shows that even in the toughest of times, La Salle comes together to accomplish amazing things.

A SEASON OF GIVING

Thanks to the success of Student Life’s annual Christmas Tree Sale fundraiser, La Salle was able to donate 141 trees to military families stationed at Ft. Irwin in Barstow, CA. 37

Investing in La Salle’s Students

CONCEPT ART

CONCEPT ART

STEAM 4 is a $800,000 project aimed at addressing an urgent need at La Salle, the renovation of our four science laboratories and two art studios. The need to refurbish these six facilities has been sparked by burgeoning student interest in our School’s STEAM program, first introduced in 2014, and the construction in 2018 of an Innovation and Design (I.D.) Lab. Our four science laboratories lie at the core of instruction in our biology, chemistry and physics programs, and our two art studios were last refurbished in 2004. In addition to improvements in the studios themselves, STEAM 4 will facilitate the construction of a new Kiln Room. To date, we are pleased to report that over $500,000 has been raised for this initiative through the generosity of alumni, parents, and friends. With over half of the renovation completed during the summer and fall of 2020, we still have funds to raise for the remaining two science laboratories, two preparation rooms, and technology infrastructure. Your support of STEAM 4 will bring strength to the program and help La Salle students build on their competitive edge. If you have any questions, please contact Kevin Delaney ’89, Executive Director of Advancement at (626) 696-4318 or kdelaney@lasallehs.org.
