La Salle Parent Newsletter For Parents and Friends of La Salle College Preparatory • Pasadena • California March 2020
Principal Ideas Hello and welcome to March. Before talking about all that is upcoming, I’d like to take a moment to celebrate the wonderful things that occurred here at La Salle in the month of February.
Courtney R. Kassakhian Principal
February began with four of our five winter sports teams advancing to the CIF playoffs: boys basketball, girls basketball, girls soccer, and girls water polo. Our girls basketball team made it to the semifinal round of playoffs - a great achievement for our young ladies and first year La Salle head coach Scott Wiard. The team advanced to the state tournament after reaching the CIF Southern Section semifinals, so we will get to continue seeing them compete into this month. And in a history making turn, our girls water polo team won the CIF championship after decisively beating Rancho Mirage on February 22. Coached by first year La Salle coach Ian Castillo, the girls outscored their opponents over four rounds by a combined score of 58-22 on their way to the first ever CIF Championship in the history of our girls water polo program! The team now advances to the Southern California Regional tournament. Congratulations to our champions and all of our athletes and coaches who represented La Salle this past season.
Reflection Prayer St. John Baptist de La Salle

Our academic co-curriculars also had great success in competition last month. - The first weekend in February brought the annual private school Academic Decathlon. La Salle students earned an astounding 102 medals! Under the guidance of Coach John Erb, they are now preparing for the World Scholars Cup competition, which will be held here at La Salle in April. - Our Robotics team, coached by Mr. Roy Chang, has competed in three tournaments since the start of the second semester. In February, our sophomore team and

March 2020 all girls team made it as far as the quarter finals, while our senior team (Nathaniel Lucas, Joshua Roesner, Gabriel Bohanec and Robert Kimble) advanced to two semifinal rounds and one tournament championship round. Additionally, our senior team has qualified for the California State Championship tournament, which will be held at Damien High School in La Verne on March 14th. Go RoboLancers! -Our speech and debate program also had great success in February. At the Berkeley tournament over President’s Day Weekend Senior Aaron Van Blerkom advanced to Octafinals in Extemporaneous Speech and earned a coveted NIE-TOC (National Individual Events Tournament of Champions) bid; Junior Leo Turner advanced to Octafinals in Original Oratory, and earned a third bid to the NIE-TOC; and Juniors Maddy Cahill and Rhyen Hunt advanced to Octafinals in Public Forum debate, earning their second bid to the prestigious Tournament of Champions in Kentucky. Congratulations to them and their coaches Ms. Elizabeth Meerson and Mr. Jeff Niemiec. As we begin March, we will have opportunities to see the work of the talented students who participate in our arts programs, including our Spring Musical production Anyone Can Whistle - under the direction of Dr. Jude Lucas. Anyone Can Whistle, a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, is wacky and intelligent with highly unconventional music. The musical will open March 27 for a 10 performance run. Additionally, the work of our visual artists will be on display at the AP Art Show on Saturday, March 28 from 4 -6 p.m. in the Blakeslee Learning Commons. March will also bring summer school registration. Any student who has been approved for a Math advancement course has already received a letter from Mrs. Hakanen verifying which course they have been approved to enroll in during the summer. Summer school auto-enrollment letters have been mailed to these families to confirm their enrollment and payment for this class. We ask that those students who plan to attend the summer advancement classes return the Agreement form by March 15. In June, any student who requires summer school for remediation will be auto-enrolled into the appropriate La Salle Summer course and parents will be invoiced accordingly. Students who failed a class first semester have already received notification regarding summer school remediation. Additionally, as I mentioned in the February Parent Newsletter, we have done a major revamp of the summer program we offer for students entering grades 1-8. Students entering grades 5-8 are invited to participate in our Summer STEAM Academy in the morning and our Junior High Athletic Clinics in the afternoons. And students entering grades 1-4 can have fun at our Youth Sports camps every morning from 8 a.m.-12:15 p.m. If you have younger students, please check out www.lasallehs.org/summer2020 for information. Registration for these summer programs, as well as optional summer classes for high schoolers, such as SAT/ACT Prep class, will open up on March 9th. And, as we do every month, we will have our Parent Association Meeting on the second Tuesday of the month, March 10, in the Blakeslee Learning Commons. As we have
2
March 2020 done the last few months, we will hold our regular business meeting at 6 p.m. so we will have time for our special guest speaker at 6:30 p.m., followed by our academic, arts, and athletic booster meetings at 7:30 p.m. This month our guest speakers will be Commissioners Scott Nord and Lisa Strassner, both judges with the Los Angeles Superior Court. Their talk will be a follow-up for parents to their high school domestic violence presentation to our students. The commissioners have presented to more than 20,000 students in LA County about what domestic violence entails at the high school level, both violent and especially non-violent conduct (i.e. acts involving social media and cell phone usage.) Although a tough subject, we believe this presentation will be an important part of our focus on healthy choices and healthy relationships. Our teens don’t always know the very real consequences of things they might do on their phones and social media without much thinking. This presentation will give them that important information. Please remember, that attending a PA and/or booster meeting is a great and easy way to earn your required parent hours. And of course, the last week of February we entered the season of Lent, beginning with our Ash Wednesday liturgy on February 26. As we begin Lent, a season of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving, I hope in your own families you might find the opportunity to talk with your children about how they plan to acknowledge and celebrate the season as we prepare for Easter. Have a wonderful March. Sincerely, Courtney Kassakhian

La Salle Matters
Patrick Bonacci, AFSC, P'94,'97 Acting President
It is important that I begin this article with a very sincere thank you to the parents who made the extra effort to attend the recent interview sessions with our President finalists. For a solid two weeks, these superior candidates faced the daunting task of meeting and responding to a series of very challenging questions that were tossed at them by parents, faculty, staff, alumni, Board members and students. I listed the students last because, from my observations, our talented and committed students were the ones who put the finalists most on the hot seat. I loved it! To a person, each finalist told me that they were astounded by the quality and depth of the student questions. My response to them was – “Of course they are the best and I could have, in truth, filled the room multiple times with other equally talented students as the ones you met. As many of you know, on two different occasions, some 20 years apart, I was asked by the Trustees to be the Acting President while two search process were unfolding. If you total those two times together, it would add up to about a three year time period. So, I know from personal experience that being the permanent President is not a role that I ever wanted. It took me out of my direct day-to-day involvement with my students in the classroom, on the playing fields or on the stages. This prelude is my way of stating that I am very proud and supportive of the difficult and challenging decision that the Board of Trustees made in offering the position of President of La Salle College Preparatory to Mr. Perry Martin. By now, you have all received the correspondence from the Trustees naming Mr. Martin as President as well as the comments from Mr. Martin. Like any transition of importance, and this most certainly is one of great importance to our community, Mr. Martin will need your on-going support and your patience while he gets up to speed with his new LSCP family. Based on his enormous wealth of background and proven leadership skills at other Catholic Private High Schools, I am confident that Perry will rapidly be ready to navigate the waters of this fantastic community. I also know that he will want to get to know our parent community as quickly as possible,

so I already ask that you make yourself available to the various opportunities that will be provided for you to meet with him once he has relocated here in July. While we are on the topic of welcoming – on March 14 we will welcome the Class of 2024 to our Lasallian family as these new students and their parents complete the registration process. As I have often mentioned, we are a unique community where every year we eagerly celebrate the accomplishments of our seniors as they transition to their collegiate life and we welcome their “replacements” as they enter our ninth grade. I am not aware of any other type of a community, other than a high school, that year-in-and-yearout transitions 25% of their members. The two major reasons that we are able to attract so many new families each year is first, because of the enthusiastic support and spirit of our current students/families and second, the skill, expertise, caring and dedication of our administration, faculty, staff and coaches. In his reflection article -WHY LASALLIAN EDUCATION ENDURES, Br. George Van Grieken, FSC wrote: “The decisive innovation of the Founder (St. John Baptist de La Salle) is that education is conducted within the context of community.” De La Salle came to see that trained, dedicated, faith-led teachers in community were the transformative driver. He insisted that “union in community is a precious gem, [and] if we lose this, we lose everything.” This community thing is not just a nice-to-have for us….The engine for effective Lasallian education, from the very beginning, was a genuine, living, educational community. Lasallian education revolves around what Lasallian scholar Leon Lauraire calls a “pedagogy of fraternity,” and association is a focused expression of community. As an extension of Br. George’s reflection, I add that for us, the true LA SALLE DIFFERENCE has been and will continue to be our caring and inclusive Lasallian Community! Sincerely, Pat Bonacci, AFSC

La Salle Announces Mr. Perry Martin as New President Dear La Salle Family, We are pleased to announce that the Board of Trustees has approved the appointment of Perry Martin as the new President of La Salle College Preparatory, effective July 1, 2020. Perry is extremely honored for the opportunity to become our next President. A deeply spiritual individual whose life is guided by his faith, he is a committed Catholic educator and visionary leader who can bring new ideas to La Salle while respecting La Salle’s outstanding foundation and legacy. Perry comes to La Salle College Preparatory from Maryknoll Schools, a K-12 Catholic school in Honolulu, HI, where he has served as President since 2008. As President of Maryknoll, Perry has been responsible for strategic planning and master planning, major fundraising, increasing and developing large cash reserves and endowment to build a lasting legacy for Maryknoll’s future. In addition, he developed strong programs, admissions processes, enrollment management strategies and growth, and retention initiatives to ensure sustainability in a highly competitive market. He worked collaboratively with his leadership team to design and implement initiatives to ensure students receive cutting edge academic and co-curricular programs leading to an outstanding Catholic education, truly preparing them for their future. In all of his work, Perry has taken a creative and entrepreneurial approach to addressing the challenges schools face in today’s world. Perry is described as a relationship-driven individual who is mission centered with a passion for Catholic education. All references emphasized his strength as a leader. He clearly embraced the charism of the Maryknoll Sisters and worked to solidify their legacy. Perry is also a student-centered leader who wants students to understand their own spiritual journey as well as value service as a way of living their own faith and mission of the school. The question Perry uses to drive his work is: “Have WE, as a community, given OUR students everything WE can to ensure their success?” Throughout his career, Perry has served in a variety of positions both at the elementary and high school levels. He began his teaching career in Saudi Arabia working as a teacher and dean for 14 years. Upon returning to the United States, he transitioned into Catholic education, first, as principal of Sacred Heart Catholic School in Medford, Oregon, then as Principal/President of Marist High School in Eugene, Oregon, and, now, President of Maryknoll Schools in Honolulu. Perry holds a B.S in Elementary Education/Technology Education and a M.S. in Elementary and Middle

March 2020 School Administration from Western Oregon University. He also has a Post Masters Elementary and Secondary Certificate in K-12 Administration from the College of New Jersey. Perry’s wife, Leann, is also an educator graduating with a degree from the University of Oregon. They are the proud parents of Jameson, an internet sales manager and graduate of Western Oregon State University, and Casandra, an interior designer with a degree from The Art Institute of Portland. Perry embraces our Lasallian charism, mission, and core values. He is very eager to begin working with all constituents of the La Salle College Preparatory community to build on the school’s extraordinary heritage and aspirations for the future. President Martin said, “It is my distinct honor and privilege to be selected as the third successive President at La Salle College Preparatory. Assuming the leadership of this great school comes with great responsibility, and I am very humbled. Leadership transitions are important “people” events in the life of the school, where I intend to validate the emotions, intelligence, values, and ideas of all constituents, understanding that diverse thought and collaboration make teams stronger. What’s most important to me is the spiritual, collegial, and interpersonal connections that I intend to develop. I will focus on developing faith, teamwork, transparency, collaboration, and accountability fulfilling the school mission of nurturing the talents of each student, inspiring in students a sense of responsibility for others, challenging students to embrace diversity, and motivating our students to respond compassionately to the needs of others, especially the poor. I look forward to meeting you and the entire school community looking more broadly, listening to more voices, and creating educational opportunities and support from the many points of view. Thank you for your prayers. I hope each of you will find time to meet with me and introduce yourself. God bless you all.” The most important responsibility of a Board of Trustees is the selection and hiring of the President. We are thankful to all who assisted in this process, especially the Search Committee, faculty, administrative staff, students, parents, alumni, Board of Trustees, Board of Regents, and the De La Salle Christian Brothers for their insight and support. The Board of Trustees especially thanks and acknowledges Pat Bonacci, AFSC, who is doing an outstanding job as Acting President of La Salle College Preparatory. Pat will continue to serve in this role through June 2020. It has been our honor to serve as co-chairs of the Search Committee during this pivotal moment in La Salle’s history. We are very pleased to welcome Perry and his wife, Leann, to this incredible and special community. Thank you for your ongoing involvement, support, and prayers for La Salle College Preparatory, especially for Perry Martin, as he undertakes his new leadership role. Most Sincerely, Robert Nuccio ’71 P ’00, ’02, ’04 Board Chair, Search Co-Chair

Parent Association Report
Jacky Samartin, P'15,'19,'21 Parent Association President
The hunt was on! Thank you to all of our parents who participated in the Parent forums interviewing our final three Presidential candidates for our school. The one take away for me is that we will win no matter who is chosen. Congratulations to our Board of Trustees for presenting three very qualified candidates. Each candidate brought something different to the table so it will be interesting to see who will be chosen. Having an opportunity to participate in this process was wonderful. Moving forward, having the right President is very important for the success of our school. I have the utmost faith that we will be in capable hands. We have a busy Spring ahead. Saturday, March 14 is registration day. I love participating in this event. It is wonderful to connect with the new families coming into our school family. Wednesday, April 8 is Grandparents Day. Our committee is working hard to again make this a wonderful event for all of our Grandparents. Our theme this year is “Anchors of Education”. Many articles have been written recently about the positive influence of Grandparents on our children’s education. We are very excited to welcome and honor them at our school. Signups are posted for this event and if you work both Tuesday set-up and the day of the event, you will receive full service hours for the year. Congratulations to our girls water polo team for winning CIF. This was so exciting to hear. Please come out and support all of our teams. They love having fans there. We have also had great success with our Academic Decathlon teams and out Speech and Debate teams. Starting, Tuesday March 3 at 7:30 we will be having “Mornings with Mary” in the Chapel. We will have prayer intentions and pray the Rosary together. We will do this

weekly during Lent and hopefully move this into a weekly prayer group. You can join us for the entire time or pop in for a few minutes of prayer. Finally, we are in the process of assembling the Parent Association Board and committees for next year. If you want to get more involved, this is a great way to do so. If you serve as a chair/co-chair of a committee or as a Board member, you will receive full credit for your service hours. Please email me (jsamartin@charter.net) if you are interested in serving. Forever Grateful Many Blessings Jacky Samartin, P’15, P’19, P’21 La Salle Parent Association President 2019-2020
Thinking Green Earlier in the school-year, the Principal’s Council was approached by a group of young women from our junior class. They wanted to explore how La Salle could become more eco-friendly in the choices we made regarding our use of products and energy. Because of their drive, we are creating a committee made up of students, faculty and parents (if interested) to create intentional methods and programs at school to help us live a more eco-friendly style. We would like to invite you to a brainstorming/listening session on Monday, March 16 at 6:30 PM in the Blakeslee Learning Commons as we seek to create a plan (both short-term and long-term) that will help us shrink our carbon footprint. If you are interested in helping or have some ideas to share, please attend this meeting. If you have any questions, please contact Ed O’Connor, Director of Student Life at eoconnor@lasallehs.org or 696-4329.

Rhyen Hunt and Madison Cahill are a Dynamic Duo Juniors Rhyen Hunt and Madison Cahill of La Salle College Preparatory qualified to the Tournament of Champions and Nationals, the two most prestigious speech and debate tournaments, in back-to-back weekends. The Tournament of Champions, hosted by the University of Kentucky, is considered America’s foremost debate competition. To qualify to the Tournament of Champions, students must earn two gold bids by advancing to final elimination rounds at national qualifying tournaments. Hunt and Cahill earned their second gold bid of the season at the California Invitational at UC Berkeley advancing to the top 16 of 245 entries in Varsity Public Forum on February 17, 2020. They earned their first gold bid in the Yale Tournament, in addition to several silver bids throughout the school year. “What Rhyen and Madison have accomplished this season is extraordinary,” said Speech and Debate Moderator Elizabeth Meerson. “As one of only seven all-female debate teams to fully qualify to the Tournament of Champions, they are not only raising the bar for our team, but for all young women.” Five days later, the duo qualified to National Speech and Debate Association’s National Speech and Debate Tournament earning a top spot at the regional qualifying tournament in San Marino. The National Speech & Debate Tournament is the largest academic competition in the world, with more than 4,500 students competing in the week-long tournament. Hunt and Cahill head to the Tournament of Champions in Lexington, Kentucky April 18-20. They’ll finish the school year before heading to the National Speech and Debate Tournament in Albuquerque, New Mexico June 14-19.

John Grossman Challenges Community John Donahue-Grossman stopped by campus on February 19 to present a powerful talk to our community. His dynamic energy and gift of storytelling inspired our community to look deeper into the way we see ourselves and those around us. After, he stopped by the Student Life class to discuss at length why he does what he does and how to spread a more positive impact in the world.

Senior News College acceptances are continuing to come in. Seniors have been offered admission to many colleges throughout California and the United States. Remember to add your admission decisions on Naviance. We need to know all the news, both good and not so good, in order to get a complete picture.
Note the new changes to the ACT
Junior News College counselors are meeting with juniors and talking to them about college options. Some Junior College Planning Surveys are still outstanding. If your student has not submitted his/her survey, please remind them to do so as soon as possible. The sooner they complete the survey, the earlier we will meet with them. Their responses help us to identify colleges that might be a good fit for them, what actions they need to take, events to participate in and so on. We then discuss our recommendations with them during the meeting. An early start on college planning often leads to a well thought out and less stressful college application process in the fall. We are also glad to meet with parents after the student has met with his/her College Counselor. Please feel free to schedule an appointment. All Students Standardized Testing We would like to thank all juniors who took the ACT at La Salle in February. Some students have already reported seeing their scores on the ACT student website. We expect all the results will be available by early March. We hope that all juniors have already registered to take the SAT and/or re-take the ACT this spring. If not, they should register as soon as possible. Registration information is available in the College Center. The next SAT test dates are May 2nd and June 6th. The next ACT test dates are April 4th and June 13th. The registration deadlines are about five weeks prior to the exam.

If your student is planning to apply to a UC campus in a science or engineering major, then he/ she is encouraged to take two SAT Subject Tests. The UC recommendation for SAT Subject Tests by campus and major can be found HERE. The best time to take SAT Subject Tests is in June after the student has completed the course. There is time to retest for SAT, SAT Subject Tests, and ACT during fall of senior year, and all colleges will take the highest score. In addition to the UCs, some colleges require or highly recommend applicants to submit two or three SAT Subject Tests. A list of colleges that require/recommend Subject Tests can be found at www.compassprep.com/admissions_req_subjects.aspx. We recommend freshmen to consider taking the Biology test and sophomores, the chemistry and/or World History test on June 6th if they are receiving an A- or higher in the course. Students should check out the pamphlet “Getting Ready for the SAT Subject Tests, found in the College Center. Please contact your college counselor or academic advisor if you have questions. Upcoming Changes to the ACT Changes to the ACT will begin this coming September, which means current juniors are the first group who can take advantage. The full details from the ACT can be found here and below are the main highlights. Change #1 - Students can retake just one section of the ACT. To illustrate, if students did well in every section except for science they can now retake just the science section without having to sit the for entire exam. Students have to take the full test once before they can unlock this option. Junior families may find it advantageous to take the ACT in spring, then use the later dates to study and retake specific sections. Change #2 - Superscoring. The ACT will now superscore, meaning students can combine the highest section score from different test dates for the best total score. Change #3 - Students can take the ACT on a computer (still at a testing center where available) instead of on paper, which will allow them to get their scores back just a few days, instead of a few weeks. Plan to visit colleges over Easter vacation Plan a college tour locally or out-of-state with your student over the Easter break (4/9-4/19). Touring a college this time of year will allow your student to experience a true college setting with students attending classes and activities taking place throughout the campus. Seeing a college campus first hand will help your student to find the right college campus for them.

The Ongoing and Positive Impact of Planned Giving For over twenty years, the Planned Giving program at La Salle College Preparatory has been an integral part of the Advancement and Fundraising efforts for our School. Through one of many Planned Giving Instruments, we continue to see growth in this component of development. Our donors and supporters are taking advantage of the benefits available from these strategies. Our School was founded in 1956 and has undergone significant changes in its over 60- years of existence. It began as a high school for young men. The school welcomed women to the student body in the early 1990s. At this same time, football was added to the athletic program. In the late ‘90s, the stand-alone Dining Hall and the amphitheater were added, and significant additions were made to the wing of the School that borders Michillinda. In recent years, advancements on the technological side have taken place. The ID Lab became a part of the Blakeslee Library and is the home of the Technology Department. The Blakeslee Library recently transformed into the Blakeslee Learning Commons, and it now provides both access to technological and curriculum support and to facilities that enhance the learning experience for the young men and women enrolled at our School. The refurbishment of the Brother Celestine Conference Room and the women’s locker room, and the completion of the fitness center are very recent improvements that enhance the overall experience for the young women and men who attend our School. Support of the Planned Giving program at our School has been integral in these campus and School developments and will play a part in the current drive to add two new buildings on campus. The planned gifts that are a significant component of this program include: • The donation of appreciated securities and real estate (held more than one year) • Naming our School as a beneficiary of one’s will, estate, trust, and/or life insurance policy • Transferring a part of one’s (donors over the age of 70 ½) IRA directly to our School • The establishment of a Charitable Gift Annuity Our School extends its sincere thanks to the many donors and benefactors who have supported the Planned Giving program through the years. Your efforts and sacrifice have been integral to the success of our School and its students. These will continue to be a core component in advancing the Mission of La Salle College Preparatory Consultation with one’s tax and financial advisor is suggested as part of the consideration of a Planned Gift, particularly with the ever-changing impact of the federal tax legislation enacted in December of 2017. IN SUMMARY La Salle College Preparatory can provide more information, both generically and specifically, regarding the benefits available through Planned Giving.
