The Australasian Editor

Letter from

Hey guys! I hope you are all well and happy and living the right balance of work and family life! After three years and eight editions, this issue of Lash Inc Australasia will be the last one from me. I have absolutely loved our journey as Lash Inc Australasia’s inaugural Editor and Distributor, a role my team and I took on to help the Australasian Lash Industry and give exposure to our Artists, educators and product companies Down Under! It has been amazing to be part of Lash Inc’s incredible evolution as a global publishing powerhouse for the lash industry and we are honoured that we blazed the trail as Lash Inc’s first Regional Editors. The amazing growth we have witnessed since, with so many sensational contributors now on the Lash Inc Team around the world.... it’s truly a magical movement to be part of. Our core business Enchanted SPA has grown so much in the last three years that unfortunately it is time to step down from our Editorial roles with Lash Inc Australasia magazine. Our Enchanted Team are delivering exciting innovations for our Enchanted Family and need all available time to concentrate on the new directions we are heading. We are 100% staying on with the Lash Inc Team and will continue working on special projects and contributing educational and specialist content. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Lash Inc Australasia Team for their contributions - Regional Editor & Distributor for New Zealand,

Lisa Gillanders, Senior Journalists – Nadia Southon, Nina Andrews, Mai Quach, and Amy Williams, Event Manager Margaret Attrill, and last but not least, my Assistant Editor, Janelle Bolger. I have no doubt Lash Inc Australasia will continue to go from strength to strength and am so excited to watch new boundaries being pushed by this incredible magazine ……. especially with the guidance of new Lash Inc Australasia co-editors, Lash Inc Chief Editor, Louise Tierney and Global lash super star Julia Mann!!!! These ladies will make such a dynamic duo and I can't wait for their first issue. Our front cover this issue, by the talented CourtneyLeigh Hollins from Centre of Attention Makeup Artistry, has been chosen to represent the divide a lot of entrepreneurs feel. Half of you wants to chase your dream, smash those goals, and you are ready and willing to sacrifice and give it your all to achieve those dreams. The other half says it’s too hard, you might as well give up and do a 9-5. I want my leaving message to you all to be this: NEVER GIVE UP. Yes, it’s hard and yes being an entrepreneur is a life no one prepared you for, but I promise it will be worth it if you keep going. If you feel like you are struggling in business and you are in two minds about giving up, please contact me and see if I can help you, just email me directly at kelly@enchantedspa.com.au I want to thank everyone for their support over the last three years and hope you continue to enjoy and support Lash Inc Australasia magazine for its role in showcasing our amazing Lash Industry. The International Editor

Letter from

In this issue of Lash Inc the theme is how to make more money doing what you love. Our team share with you how you can make more money as a lash artist and live the life you deserve.

Your intentions set the tone for how well you navigate personal and professional success. Have you set yours high enough? You must always feel a little bit uncomfortable with what you are doing. If you don’t and feel 100 per cent in control, you are probably not setting your goals high enough.

Since the last issue I have been busy helping set up new translated versions of Lash Inc. We are now have editions in Macedonia, Bulgaria, Germany and soon we will be launching in France and Italy. For details of all countries and languages we cover please visit https://www. lashinc.com/magazine

Get comfortable being uncomfortable because that’s where the real growth happens. Set your goals and then aim ten times higher.

The other major project I have been working on is a new book ‘Secrets to Success’ from Lash Industry Influencers. I hope you get a chance to read it and get some great insights from it. Included in our VIP membership or available in print on Amazon. Every year, I am honoured to meet many successful people in the lash industry. The lash business owners in this book have especially impressed me with what they are achieving in the industry. If you read each chapter carefully, you will see a common thread between all authors. Success isn’t an accident. It is planned and takes a great deal of hard work. These chapters showcase some of the most successful lash artists and educators in the world. They are sharing how they have achieved what they have so you can learn and fast track your success. One of the main things you will realize about these business owners is you don’t need an MBA to achieve business success. Some people didn’t go any further than high school with their ‘formal education’. What is important is mindset. This is the biggest difference between those who succeed and those who don’t. The conversations you have with yourself are the most important ones you will ever have. To be clear, we talk to ourselves all day, every day. Eventually, all that talk creates our individual self-concepts and beliefs. Be careful what you say and think to yourself, YOU are listening.

Passion, action and perseverance are, in my opinion, the keys to success. You must love what you do, be passionate about it and you will need perseverance, things don’t happen overnight. When you see people succeed and it appears that it happened fast, believe me, it didn’t. I can’t speak for anyone else but let’s take Lash Inc as an example. It took five years to get the support it has now. And before that, I was in the industry for 14 years building contacts and gaining experience. So if you think it’s easy to start a publishing business and make it a success, it isn’t and most people in this book have their own stories about how hard they have worked at making their business known and successful. Action is what you need to make everything happen. You can think a good game, but thoughts don’t make you money unless they are implemented in some form. You can talk an even better game, but without the follow through, you will not have the success you desire. The final tip is to complete the work you start. In my early 20’s to about 30, I started various projects but I never finished anything easily and always got distracted by the next shiny new project. As soon as I started focusing on completing things, great things happened. Enjoy reading this issue of the Magazine and the chapters from my friends and colleagues in this book. Should you wish to take part in our next book or want to nominate someone to take part, join the mailing list. Have an amazing career! Best wishes,

Louise Tierney

what you love

When you do by Pixie Ambler Pixie Lash Artistry

They say when you do what you love for work you never work a day in your life. This is true as everything you do is done in passion and pure want not because you have to but because you truly love and want to do the hard work that you do. I did a creative shoot with my favorite Perth photographer Colleen Irvine – Upstage Photography and we decided to do two shoots in the one shoot with the same model. One for my own artistic creative purposes and one for clientele interest. This worked well for both levels but how did this generate income for my business and why should you take the chance in the outlay costs of a creative shoot? 1.

The creative shoot was loved by a fellow business owner and picked up to use for a magazine, this generates income

6 - Lash inc australasia

by giving your business in the public's eye credibility and a trusting reputation which every client is looking for. Upon holding job interviews for our company in February every single applicant replied the same to the question why do you want to work for pixie lash artistry, it was due to our reputation. 2.

By turning the shoot into also a bridal photo shoot this worked well as it is more a target market of clientele what they enjoy to see and what is relatable to them, and can be used for your everyday marketing. We did the shoot last year and kept the photos unreleased to be used for something special which ended up being for the bridal expo and Lash Inc.

How do brides make us money when many are once offs just for their special day? We find many brides keep up their services after the wedding and refer many friends. To be trusted to provide someone a perfect look on their special day is very personally rewarding, you will more often than not be provided with a beautiful professional photo of their wedding which now you can use as further marketing. Find what you truly love what you are passionate about and think how can I grow this for a positive work outcome and take those steps to make it a reality. Many times it’s an accumulative effect of what you put out there. The more a client sees your passion and achievements the more their trust grows and the more likely they will come to you and stay as a loyal customer.

BUILD THE LIFE YOU LOVE

Timeless

Elegance is

Getting Those Bridal Lashes on Point by Nina Andrews Senior Journalist Lashes On Point lashesonpoint_australia@hotmail.com www.lashesonpoint.com.au It’s that time of year again. Wedding bells are ringing and brides are stressing! It’s time to bang out those bridal sets for your clientele. Here are a few tips and tricks to get through the bridal season with only 100% happy brides:

1.

2.

Patch Test: If there was ever a time to patch test; it’s now! Could you imagine ruining your clients’s wedding day with an allergic reaction? Try to get brides to come in a month or more prior to their wedding appointment and apply a few lashes to each eye. Check back in at 24 hours and 48 hours to ensure everything is fine. Refill before ‘The Big Day’ NOT a full set: At your refill appointments, you can edit and change the styling, length and density. It’s harder to change a full set right after they open their eyes. Have a thorough consultation at least a month prior to the

8 - Lash inc australasia

wedding, complete with extensive discussions and example pictures of what the client likes. Applying a full set more than a month prior to the wedding day, allows time for the bride to decide if she wants to make any adjustments at the refill right before the wedding day. 3.

Project Calm: This is her Big Day and she is trusting you with her face. Let her know that she is in good hands. This will mean that one thing will be crossed off her huge to-do list without any dramas.

4.

Less is More: This is probably the most important point! The bride

doesn’t want to walk down the aisle and be confronted with a groom who doesn’t recognise her. Less is more, do not make her look like someone different. Simply enhance her natural beauty. 5.

Be a Team Player: This is not YOUR big day to billboard your work. You are part of a team, all working toward the same goal. You as a Lash Artist are working in unison with the Dressmaker, Make Up Artist, Beauty Therapist and Hairdresser. Ask things like: “What style of make up are you having?” and “What will your hair look like?” Establish the overall style she is hoping to achieve and as yourself: “What can I do as an artist to enhance the overall effect but not take all of the limelight?” Realise that this is time to let all facets of her natural beauty shine.

6.

Make it ALL about the bride: Get excited! Ask lots of questions; “What’s the dress like?” and “What are you doing for food?” and “Who’s coming?” If you are bubbly and excited, you will connect more with your client. This makes it more likely that you’ll gain her as an ongoing client.

7.

Provide ‘Wedding Bag’ After-Care: Even just a small mascara wand in a container (to keep it clean) is perfect for quick touch-ups on the day.

8.

Communicate with the Make Up Artist: Explain to your bride that oil based products can effect some eyelash extension adhesives. Show how the Make Up Artist can use a moist slanted makeup brush to apply black eyeliner instead of applying oily liquid eyeliners. This will keep the lashes looking fresh into her honeymoon. Also explain how Make Up Artists can simply moisten a clean mascara wand and brush the extensions after make up application to remove any eyeshadow that might have dusted onto them.

9.

Show her how to Wash Her Lashes: Ensuring that the bride is fully informed and equiped to clean her lashes well so that she is able go from the reception right through to the honeymoon looking fabulous.

10. Elegance is Timeless: Always go for a conservative and elegant style. Something like a slight cat eye, a kitten eye or an open eye look would be perfect for a bride. Unless specifically requested by the bride; avoid Instagram trends like textured ‘spikey’ styles or ‘Kim Kardashian’ inspired looks that can appear overly stylised. You don’t want people to notice the lashes before they notice the dress. Elegance is timeless and you want to ensure that your bride can look back on photos in years to come and fall in love with her lashes time and time again.

Enchanted SPA is an industry leading specialist Eye Artistry Academy. Our passion is helping women start and grow successful lash and brow businesses and our motto from the beginning has been "Choose a job you love, and you'll never have to work a day in your life".

Spotlight on

Enchanted Students

So, it's fitting that the theme for this issue of Lash Inc is "How to make more Money Doing what you Love". They fit together quite nicely, don’t they!

Finding something you love fuels you through the highs and lows, it gives you purpose and inspires creativity. Without passion, without heart, what's the point?? And it's all well and good to be passionate, but that only gets you so far. You need the head stuff too. As we tell our business students, there are definite traits that separate a business owner from an entrepreneur, like: ĵĵ

Having a plan

ĵĵ

Staying focused on your goal

In 2016 I began my career in eyelash extensions. Opening and running a business was never something I had imagined for myself, I didn’t even know where to begin, however, after speaking to a few wonderful people in the industry and listening to their journey I decided to take a leap and contacted Kelly Storer CEO of Enchanted SPA. I later went on to complete numerous courses through her training academy. Starting a business wasn’t easy let alone learning the art of eyelash extension application at the same time. I have a condition called Amblyopia which has caused partial vision loss and no depth perception in one eye, due to this it took a considerable amount of effort to place

10 - Lash inc australasia

ĵĵ

Keeping one eye on what's coming down the road and thinking about how you can use it to your advantage

ĵĵ

Being smart enough to work with and learn from like-minded people

ĵĵ

Being self-motivated and committed, and

ĵĵ

Flexible enough to adapt to changing circumstances on the fly

Heart + Head = Win! We love watching our students as they go through their own personal journeys. We love to celebrate their successes at all stages of their career, whether they are just starting out, have been in business for a few years or are retraining and resetting their business

an eyelash extension on a natural lash, in the beginning it would take hours upon hours to stick a mere 10-20 lashes on a client but with time, lots of practice, patience and continued support from my trainers it gradually became easier. Fast-forward 3 years and I can’t imagine doing anything else. I have grown so passionate for lashing and helping people feel beautiful every day is so rewarding. Challenges are ongoing yet with each I find myself learning more and overcoming them with greater ease. I have many plans for expansion in the future and will continue to train in every new technique that comes around. This year my goal is to learn the art of cosmetic tattooing, I’m hoping to branch out into new and different areas within the industry so one day I can open a commercial salon specializing in lashes and brows.

with us. It makes us proud when we see the full bloom begin from seeds we planted and helped to grow! We thank our students, our Enchanted Family (numbering in so many hundreds now!) for choosing us as your educators, to guide and teach you and help you all grow as amazing Lash and Brow Artists. We thank you for coming to us for continued guidance after your courses have finished and for the love you show for us. So here we show our appreciation by putting the spotlight on three of our wonderful students. Each one is at different stages of their careers, with different businesses, their own personal story to tell and tips they would give new lash artists.

We hope you enjoy their stories! If I were to give my advice to new lash artists or if you are considering a change of career I would say, never compare yourself to others, one major issue with running a business like this is you find yourself constantly comparing your work to others, your salon to others or your Instagram page to others. Stop worrying about what everyone else is doing, be confident in yourself and your business, everyone has to start somewhere and everyone is on a different path in life just focus on yours.

By Georgie Fairless

My lash journey started 2 years ago, I was lucky enough to be a stay at home mum to my beautiful twin daughters, but after 2.5 years I felt like I needed to do something for me. I tried a few different things like MLM, but I was hopeless at selling, so that went out the window. Then a friend of the family suggested lash extensions as she had done it for a while and said the money was good. I thought that sounds like something I could be interested in since I have always been obsessed with my own eyelashes trying every mascara on the market to make them fuller & longer. I got in contact with a trainer to learn classic eyelash extensions, the training turned out to be outdated with old, unsafe lashing techniques. I left the training feeling deflated and unsure if this was for me, I had done my own research prior and knew there was more update techniques etc . Not wanting to fail again, I turned to the internet and did more of my own research & taught myself enough so I could open my home studio and start charging clients, looking back my work was definitely not

I always knew I wanted to work in the beauty industry but never really knew where in the field I belonged. Coming from business orientated parents I have always been driven to start my own. After having a couple of horrendous eyelash experiences and cr ying immediately after from disappointment I decided to take on some training and never let any girl walk away feeling like I did from an inexperienced lash artist. I had a dream of making every girl feel as beautiful as they possibly can feel. I trained at Enchanted Spa in Perth in Nov 2018, whilst I was 10 weeks pregnant. I officially launched my business, Luxe Lashes by Lisa Bola on Feb 4th 2019,

the best, I was doing unsafe heavy sets, no patch testing, no insurance etc I opened my home studio in Feb 2017 and was gaining a few clients offering cheap sets of Classic extensions but wasn’t busy or earning much income. During this time, I kept self-teaching and joined every lash group on Facebook to learn as much as possible. One day after posting a question Kelly (CEO of Enchanted Spa) commented on my post, well that changed my business and my life. Kelly took the time to give me a call and have a chat about what I wanted from my business, I always remember her saying something along the lines of “in this industry you can earn more money per hour than your husband” I thought to myself YES that’s exactly what I want to do. After our chat I decided I wanted to learn Russian Volume lash extensions, so I worked as hard as possible and saved enough money to finally book in to an Enchanted Spa Course in November 2017. The training itself was remarkable (that’s a whole another story) it changed everything about how I viewed the lash industry and changed my career path.

services to my studio and hopefully one day become a trainer and inspire and change the lives of women in the same way it has changed mine and my family’s. My 1 piece of advice to anyone thinking of starting in the lash industry would be to invest in good training. If it wasn’t for me finding a passionate, educated & up to date training academy I would of either given up or worse still producing cheap, terrible quality & unsafe sets of lash extensions.

By Kayleigh Coyle

Since then I have built a very successful & extremely busy home studio. My future plans are to add more specialised

focusing on classic extensions, whilst I am still training in Russian volume.

goals of expanding into my second home of Bali by the end of the year.

It took off with a huge boom and all the extra clients allowed me to fast track my skills and really find my niche with design and creativity.

Eyelash extensions are my passion, I see eyelashes when I close my eyes, my spare time is spent researching new techniques. The feeling you get when someone sees themselves in their new lashes is a feeling you can’t explain.

I’m currently 35 weeks pregnant and about to start my maternity leave. My piece of advice for any new lash artist is to trust the process, its hard work at first, perfection comes with practise, take the risk, try different curls, try to get as many different ranges of trials sets as possible, ask questions (because you will have lots) and most importantly do your research on the training company you go with. I feel like I have been lashing forever and don’t know why I didn’t start earlier. Upon my return in July, I plan to come back bigger and better than ever. I plan on opening my own salon in Newcastle NSW, and specialising in Russian & Mega volume by the end of 2019, with

Love

Doing what you

To make more money by Mai Quach Senior Journalist Asena Artistry mai@asenaartistry.com www.asenaartistry.com

Once upon a time it was a world of white-collar jobs, but now everyone seeks to find true freedom which obviously isn't the 9-5 work rule. Are there obstacles and challenges to reach such freedom? Absolutely!!! But at the end of the day, the fulfilment and rewards surpass these because for the first time, people are truly deciding to live on their own terms. It is a great thing to love what you do but even more astonishing when you get rewards for "doing you". From food staples to hand made accessories, especially in developing countries, the tides have turned and once more, the economies of most nations breathe again. People have come to see the pros behind building a career born solely out of passion along with the enormous possibilities and opportunities that come along with it. Needless to say, everyone has a passion but not everyone may create from it. The knowledge of wealth creation is classified to those who are in effect able to realize immensely from the abilities they got. Here are a couple pointers on how to make more money doing what you love.

Understand beyond your talents So firstly, there is a need to understand beyond your talents and acquired skills what the people around you or beyond your region seek for. It’s one thing to be good at what you do and love what you do but a better understanding of what people need brings more reward to that hobby of yours which would in turn translate to a profit-making venture. When strategically putting into consideration, their needs and having a good grasp of the psychological angle of your clients, people are able

12 - Lash inc australasia

to appreciate your work and gain satisfaction at the same time, else what is the point of doing good work without gains or satisfaction?

Take A Vantage Point And so, it works exactly this way; after identifying with a problem that matches with what your talent or skill can solve or deliver, what's next is to try to map out a peculiar way that probably no one but you could actually think of, and use that as a means or approach to address that same problem. In actual sense, we humans battle with the same old problems on a daily, what really stands entrepreneurs out from the competition is finding new, better, more advanced, creative and accessible ways to solve these problems we face daily. So, the real question here is not what can you do, but what can you do differently?

Seek Expert Counsel When one is good at something, it doesn't necessarily mean the person is good at everything. A talented musician may find it difficult working out deals and gigs to promote his/her work. That is why for such person, A manager and perhaps a publicist is key to his/her success. So, it’s important to get the necessary help needed to make your dream a reality.

Only give excellence The level of work put into any business can be perceived by the consumers of such. Time and time again people settle for less when it comes to delivering their produce but history keeps reminding us of outstanding people who just went a little further than the average and gave the world their best. These great minds and entrepreneurs saw excellence as an invaluable requirement for success. When it comes to having a buzz around your product and actually becoming outstanding, attention to every single detail and an obsession for excellence is key.

Make your Priority your Customers' Also, nothing beats a customer’s feedback. Wanting to please your customers via their feedback, only makes you better at satisfying them and brings a whole lot of audience to you. Aim at customer satisfaction, aim at fulfilling their taste and aim at bringing them back on repeat.

Stay Resolute Lastly, hav ing the w ill and determination to see through any challenge is perhaps the most important value an entrepreneur must have. It’s no secret, entrepreneurs face a lot of good and bad times, but being resolute most times definitely sees one through. It’s a fight and that attitude of coming out a winner, coming out strong and being better for the next phase is all that matters at the end of the day. So, here's your shot at carving a career from your passion. Remember how real this is to you and how much your desires and creativity are just not gonna cut it. Your passion isn't an end product but a raw process to gain from. Always remember the process and remember to take the step. Tireless effort will eventually make up some day and the phase to begin with and all that you need is already within your reach.

Woman's World

Being a Man in a by Greg Forshaw Creative and Managing Director Perspective Lashes & Brows Southampton, UK

I established my business 18 months ago at the age of 17 however, my journey began from a very young age when I was inspired by watching my sister expand her very successful beauty business. I first started my lash career after realising I had enough of full time education, being employed and answerable to someone else wasn’t for me. I began with the Ultimate HQ with the incredibly skilled Leanne Harber , learning classic individuals, after returning home following my course, I sat down with my mum and said “oh god I can’t do this!”, “It’s so much harder than it looks” ; I couldn’t even hold a pair of tweezers properly! Despite these negative thoughts I had a word with myself and decided I’m not going to let them get to me and I persevered through all my case studies. My next step was to train with the UK Lash Institute with the highly talented Miranda Tarpey on this course I learnt Russian volume and how to hand make perfect fans using 0.03mm using

these skills was when my business really took off. When I started offering different Lash techniques and styles, my business quickly grew from 1 or 2 clients a week to 4 to 5 clients a day. With this I needed to show my clients how I differ from many lash techs around the local area. My business is called Perspective Lashes & Brows as it gives my clients an insight that I lash from a man’s perspective which all my clients love.

I am excited about where this journey is going to take me

Being a male in this predominantly female influenced industry is amazing and I love it! I have been inspired by 3 incredible lash masters Leanne Harber, Miranda Tarpey and Kelly Storer without whom my lash business would be completely different to what it is today. I have so much respect for the professionals in the industry sharing their knowledge with everyone. This encourages me to be just like them and deepens my determination to push myself to the limit to be able to share my knowledge with others in the industry. I think it would be great for more men to join the industry it definitely gives me a unique selling point. I am excited about where this journey is going to take me and I love how anyone has a chance to be a someone, male or female, in this Industry.

Pineapple does Belong

On Pizza by Tarryn Gill

It's time to finally lay to rest the biggest debate in modern lashing history: Is there a place for pre-made fans in the industry? Which has to be up there with some of the longest running debates of all time: Evolution or Creation, Batman vs Superman, The chicken or the Egg? When Pre-mades first began coming on to the market in the form of Y, V and W lashes they were still weighing in at 0.20 per lash but we were quite excited just the same, It opened up a whole new way of thinking on eyelash extensions‌ I had personally seen nothing like it.

The pre-made fans eliminate the time it takes to pick up and create your own fan. Fast forward 9-10 years and to the fans now being produced, well it's like replacing 0.25 with 0.10 in classic lashing. It is a massive leap forward in the natural lash health stakes! Of course back then the natural lash health really hadn't been considered to be as adversely affected by extensions as we now know they were. So the spider leg styling so common during that time became much heavier and even more damaging, at least for a

14 - Lash inc australasia

time until the damage was realised and researched. We now know that our clients natural lash health is crucial to the longevity of our lashing careers and should be preserved to the best of our ability. The pre-made lash fans on the market now are the exact same weight as if you had made the same yourself with volume lash extensions. The bases no longer contain adhesive but rather are bonded directly by heating the base until it softens and fixes. As with Volume the bases vary as do the width of the fans, long stem bases tend to be more closed and while the top line appears thicker the natural lash line does not. Wide stems fan directly from the base creating a fluffier top line and a more dense lash line. The pre-made fans eliminate the time it takes to pick up and create your own fan therefore decreasing the time you would expect with traditional volume, becoming more like that of classic lash timing. The application of a pre bonded fan is technically much like that of a classic lash, with that in mind you should expect very similar retention to that of your classic lash extension clients. What you do need to consider when using pre mades is that you can still

do some serious damage to the natural lashes if not applied correctly or if you do not understand the weight to natural lash ratio. The most agreed point in the debate is that these pre-made fans can not and will not replace hand made volume for individualised lashing treatments. The expertise required for this type of styling and technique takes time and practice to perfect therefore to really advance your lashing career taking a course in volume is still highly recommended. Pro tip: Want to create some beautiful classic/volume fusion? Hybrid styling combining premades with f lat lashes looks spectacular!

Scared Money

Don't Make Money

Money isn’t a scary or dirty word. I say this, but in the past I have been guilty of thinking that it is. lets not be scared of spending and investing in developing our skills and growing our businesses. I heard this quote on the Housewives of Atlanta reality show from a woman who is VERY successful in all her business ventures. This is how she said it (with her southern accent "SCARED MONEY DON'T MAKE MONEY" I first thought it was just hilarious, but then I thought about it, "what does that even mean?" After much thought, here's what I came up with when I applied this quote to myself and my business; Scared money don’t make money - to me is something that I should actually be reminding myself daily. I should remind myself every time I hesitate when making a business decision, every time I doubt my skills or my potential, every time I let the daily grind of running my own business

16 - Lash inc australasia

overwhelm me and every time I hold off spending money that I KNOW with out a doubt will be beneficial to growing the business. I’m going to assume that we are all the same and everyone is just like me, as in, I have some major insecurities which include but are not limited to my skills, not feeling like I have validation. I have been lashing 8 going on 9 years and I'm still insecure about where I fit in the industry. I especially worry that if I make a wrong move financially my business will completely fail. Don't get me wrong, I can happily say that I love the lash industry, my clients and love going to work everyday, but ill be real, I'm not only lashing every day because I love it. This is my livelihood.

I want to grow my business, I want my business to have longevity. We need money to do this.

Scared money don't make money Now this just isnt a theory of mine that I've come up with over a few glasses of wine, without realising it, I had actually been applying this mantra to my life for the last 5 or so years when I decided that I needed to make a change. I needed to start investing in myself and embracing everything that the lash community has to offer. Within the first year some huge changes started to happen. These changes were all positive and allowed me to grow professionally as a lash tech but also gave me direction on where I would like to take my business.

I have since moved from my home studio to a commercial space where I now have 2 lash techs working for me, I have written an amazing manual that I am really proud of, and have started teaching classes . I have invested in additional training and conferences where I have been nominated for awards, have met so many beautiful lash techs not only in my own city but from around the world. Lastly I have joined the Lash Inc team as a Senior Journalist for the Australasian edition of the Magazine!

Start saying yes a little more often! The reason for me listing off some of my achievements is not to boast, but to show you that if you can overcome your fears or insecurities and start saying yes a little more often, wonderful opportunities can present themselves. its going to open you up to a whole new way of thinking and empowerment which will give you the the best chance at reaching your full potential as a lash artist!

When I say that I feel liberated, this is no exaggeration. I felt it immediately, I have direction, confidence and purpose. This confidence helps me to pull the trigger more often then not, take risks and be comfortable with the decisions I make (even the "crazy" ones) So, now that I have adopted this "mantra" I will continue living by it. I really do encourage everyone to do the same. I hope that if you are reading this, and you feel that you can relate even in the slightest that this will help you to give yourself the validation that you need to realise your potential and be the best lash artist and business owner you can be.

Wishing you all so much success!

Inverted

Makeup Trend

by Courtney Leigh Hollins Centre of Attention Makeup Artistry

Makeup

Its all about trends!!! Especially when it comes to the creative world of Instagram. So many of my followers have asked me to recreate an Inverted Makeup look and as soon as I saw Nikki Tutorials version I was instantly inspired. Nikki was inspired by @lithunium. snow but the original trend setter was @patyna_makeup who I would strongly recommend checking out. Her work is amazing! Like any trend, doesn’t matter who started it, if its cool, it will catch on

18 - Lash inc australasia

like wild fire once big names like Nikki Tutorials recreates it. I will admit, it was one of the harder makeups I have done. Not so much time consuming but breaking habits when it comes to highlighting and contouring. It took a while for me to wrap my head around applying white for the contoured areas and black for the highlighted areas. The teal mid tone was simple and bought relief when I got to apply that between the black and white. This is definitely a look that needs to be trusted that the end result will turn out amazing! I started on the

Artistry

eyes and wanted to give up, but told myself to trust the process, like any makeup illusion. If you guys have a spare 3hrs and want to jump onboard with this trend I 100% recommend it. Such a cool image for your Instagram dashboard and good to keep up with creative trends as everything changes weekly<3 Goodluck!! Here is my step by step. I hope it helps!

Here is how I did it >>

1

2

Glue down eyebrows and paint white with a water activated paint.

5

3

Reverse all of the colours for a cutcrease, for eg, i applied black where my lightest shades would be and the white for darkness.

6

Blend the black, teal and white and powder well with a white translucent powder.

9

Ramp up your highlighted areas with more white paint, especially the nostrils!

10

Incease the intensity for the natural contoured areas with white paint and lightly blend out. The more aggressive the better!

Paint a pair of false lashes with white bodypaint and apply them to your lids using lashglue. Also paint your natural lashes to blend.

Apply white paint to the contoured areas.

7

Fill the lips with a teal lip colour and outline with white paint. I defined my top and bottom lip with black paint also.

11

Paint any exposed natural hair white to blend in with wig. Feel free to paint your hair with white bodypaint to get the same effect.

4

I used teal as my medium shade, similar to what would come up on a negative image. Mix together green blue and white.

8

Do the same to the body, define the collarbones and highlighted areas with black and vice versa. Use teal again as the mid tone.

12

Apply white eye contacts and you are complete!! What an awesome trend!

The training and support I received after my training really helped me a lot, which then led me to placing 3rd in my first NZ lash competition in 2017. Then 1st place in NZ lash competition 2018. My passion for lashing didn’t stop there. I've always been someone that believes a woman should always have the skills to be able to support herself, and create her own career success. I approached Lisa from LashWorx about being a trainer. From there I've taught students the skills of lashing, and tips on running a business. I love the connections I've been able to make through teaching and lashing. The clients that have turned into friends and the extra time I've been able to spend with my children while still being able to support my family financially. Lashing is not just my job it's my love. I will continue to grow my career and I'm excited to do that along side LashWorx.

Im Alisa, owner of Precision Lashes. My Journey started with a total lack of knowledge. I applied lashes to friends in my kitchen. I quickly realised that I needed to educate myself and invest in good training to offer clients a safe service. My latest Russian Volume training with Lashworx has left me feeling more passionate about what I have to offer. My path to becoming a certified lash stylist has taken time, dedication and practice. Lots of Practice!!! Many don’t understand the complexity of what I do, however I intend to move forward and become more specialized. It takes commitment, but well worth the effort after good results.

Rebecca Gloistein 34yrs- owner/operator of Butterfly Kisses in Christchurch I spent 17yrs as a Chef/Cake Decorating Manager; I entered the lash industry part time just under 2yrs ago after getting lash extensions for a few years. After 3 months I won 1st place in the NZ lash comp (beginners classics) I was offered the opportunity to train in Russian Volume with Lisa a short time later in Christchurch! Knowing Lisa was highly respected in the industry, I jumped at the chance. First day training in a small group with Lisa the course was outstanding, her knowledge and training style were on point. I went away feeling confident to conquer the new service I was now able to offer. Within 2 months my clientele grew so much I went full time. I have gone on to win another staggering 5 x international awards! Most recently 1st place 2019 Lash Champs (Master Pro Classic AUS & NZ). Lisa always supports & encourages up skilling, returning to Christchurch to do a refresher course in Dec. LashWorx defiantly sets the standards for this ever-growing industry!

Berenice Hurst I had the absolutely pleasure of training with LashWorx in Classic Eyelash Extensions and Henna Brows. Bianca was very professional, and also kind and reassuring during the training, and both her and Lisa have continued to give guidance and support since. Training with LashWorx has given me the confidence to create a business I’m immensely proud of.

Turn your Creativity by Roberta Grande

Let’s talk about creativity. Being an eyelash technician is an art. That’s why we call each other lash artists.

into Income

Right: Odeta Razmine 1st place

How often do you create something different than everyday looks? How often you use colour lashes in your sets? Sadly, most of us don’t use our creativity too often. Usually when we offer to add some colours to lash sets, customers gets a bit scared. They imagine fantasy looks with extreme colours and lengths. Adding few colourful volume fans or a few colorful classic lashes to a set highlights the colour of the eyes, giving an even more mysterious look. These pictures with colourful sets really attracts the attention of potential customers. Even colourful makeup attracts attention. When I scroll through Instagram or Facebook posts, I always pass plain black lash sets. They don’t attract my attention too much. If I see any colours, different styling, something extreme or creative, I always stop there for a moment and start analyzing Left: trophies

these pictures and the account it was uploaded from. Customers are just like lash artists, they get bored seeing the same pictures, with same styles and colours. These days, there are thousands of lash technicians around the world offering the same service and posting similar pictures on social media. Don’t be afraid to be different, use your imagination. Take in some models if your customers are afraid to try something new. Create something different. It will attract new potential customers who will be happy to work with you.

on after the procedure to take beautiful pictures. Applying light makeup to your customer doesn’t require a degree in makeup artistry. Have some crystals, glitters and artificial f lowers with you. Most of them will be happy to look beautiful in the picture and will share those pictures, too. A perfect advertisement to a targeted audience. It will cost for you only 10-15 minutes of your time. You will create a full portfolio with beautiful pictures and will attract more customers.

Cross your barriers.

Go to competitions live and online. These days, there is so much to choose from. It’s easy to find what suits you the best. It does not matter if you are

beginner or expert. You don’t need to travel thousands of kilometres to compete in a championship. Now you can do it at home. Online competitions are the best solution for those who are afraid to compete live. Make your job more interesting. Set a goal to reach a higher level and work for it. Leave your comfort zone. Your customers will be addicted to you if you will show them that you not standing in one place and you moving forward. I and my wonderful colleague Toma Sakiniene decided to leave our comfort zones and step away from it for other lash artists. We created an online colour creation competition in February 2019. Our goal was to convince more artists to leave their comfort zone and use creativity. To show that they can

do more and inspire others to stop being afraid to compete. We gave them absolute freedom to choose what kind of art they wanted to create.

Above: Greta Zemaitaitiene 2nd place

Few words from my colleague Toma Sakiniene:

All works were absolutely different and beautiful. Each contestant showed beautiful ideas that were hidden deep inside them. We let them use anything they wanted, any kind of lashes, colours or elements and choose any theme and style they wanted. The main requirements was to use not everyday lashes, and instead use colourful or rarely used curls, extra elements, makeup and keep colour harmony and style in whole picture. We were really surprised when the only beginner earned the maximum points

over all other contestants (masters and experts). She showed that everything is possible if you want it. Just step out your comfort zone and act.

“I’m really glad that my and Roberta Grande’s ideas and minds go in same direction. In the near future, we have plans and events for eyelash technicians. Our first VIP colour creat ion champion ship really surprised us as we saw how talented the masters are from Lithuania and abroad. At the end of spring, we are planning to stage a live competition in Lithuania. We have so many amazing artist worldwide and we want them to show their best skills as artists. We want to encourage all masters to take a part in competitions and show their best skills for world. Every time you compete, you grow your motivation, skills and step up to higher level”. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram and don’t miss a chance to step up to the next level. 1st place Odeta Razmine 2nd place Greta Zemaitaitiene 3rd place Deimante Petraviciute Best regards,

In the Heart of Texas let's do

what we love!

EyeConic Lash Studio, Fort Worth, Lash Artist: Monika Frazier Interviewer: Nikki Huebner Fort Worth, TEXAS!

“Where the tea is sweet, our words are long. The days are warm, and our FAITH is STRONG.” Monika, I absolutely LOVE TEXAS! When I think about Texas, I think WOW, this is one of the best places to live in the USA! Among a plethora of other things, one thinks about big hair, long lashes, gorgeous men and women, cowboys, football, hearty meals and good ol’ southern hospitality! As I travel more with my brand, Endure, especially over the past two years, and I speak to someone in say, New York City, and almost immediately they ask, “Are you from Texas?” For cool points appeal, I sometimes wish I could say, “Yes!” But when I am in Texas and I speak to someone, they usually ask “Where are you from? The Carolinas?”, and that is always a superb conversation breaker. So, Monika, us finding one another and now working successfully together is just another example of the melting pot of the USA and that in Texas, there are truly many hearts! I was lucky enough to find the heart in you, and your amazing team, Eyeconic Lash Studio in Fort Worth! Q1. Monika, what brought you to Texas? Or are you a born and raised Texas gal? I love everything Texas! I was raised on my family’s working cattle ranch in Franklin, Texas, where I loved to fish and hunt with my family and cousins, showed animals at the county fair and helped work cattle since I was a child. While I wasn’t afraid to get dirty working on the ranch, I was fascinated with beauty, aesthetics and makeup. As a cheerleader, before Friday night football games on bus rides, I would often apply the cheerleaders’ and drill teams’ makeup. I looked forward to the games so I could fulfill my passion for

34 - Lashes

helping other girls look and feel great about themselves. Enhancing natural beauty is an art and instinct that came naturally to me. Q2.-You mentioned to me that your sister plays an integral part in helping you run your business. What are your day to day demands when it comes to the operational business functions versus creatively enjoying your art? My whole team is fantastic, and everyone’s role is unique. One important rule I have is to hire the people who fit the culture you want to have in the workplace. I want a culture that is warm, uplifting and supportive to women. My sister, Mika, is an inspiration and brings a fun energy to the studio. She operates initial customer facing, or front line. So, the bubbly personality you talk to when you call to book, or the beauty that greets you as you enter the front door. Mika is the first ray of sunshine you see when you walk into the studio. She is responsible for the day-to-day operations, which enables me to have more time with my clients and enjoy being creative. She fuels the energy of the studio, and my clients love her. She is perfect for this position. Maddy is an amazing artist/technician who is well beyond her years. Her

Above: EyeConic Lash Studio

caring heart, energetic personality, old soul, tenacious work ethic and excellent skills have brought so much joy to the studio. Her arrival was perfect timing as I was going through a life-changing transition that also impacted my business. Yet, everything fell into place. Tara is a strong young woman who recently joined Eyeconic. Wow! Her confidence and no holds barred attitude, along with intense work ethic, is contagious. She is currently managing marketing for us and is training to become a lash artist. My mom, Karon, helps manage the administrative duties when my sister isn’t available. She is magnificently supportive and helps relieve any stress that can come along with the art. I love that my family is part of my business and Tara and Maddy are family. We are all strong women who look after each other and build each other up. I love my Eyeconic family. I always feel, while I can teach the art of lashing, having an actual character is ingrained, and that’s my philosophy behind my business. Invest in people – not innate talent – because I believe talent can grow naturally over time. Q3.-The more lash artists I meet, the more I am noticing that most of them have a very similar personalities. What aspect of your personality do you think led to becoming a lash artist? I received my master’s degree in educational counseling at Texas Christian University because I wanted to help people in emotional distress. At the same time, I worked for MAC and provided makeup for bridal parties. As I was prepping for my state license to be a counselor, I tried an eyelash extension class and loved it! I felt the same focus in lash artistry that I felt in focusing on how to improve a person’s feelings about themselves. Whether that be

goods, expenses, training, education, certification, experience, time, awards, quality of work, the general market and my competition. My prices may be at the higher end, but we provide a luxurious and tailored experience. We don’t compete with corporate businesses. Instead, we focus our attention on the personalization and environment we offer. I remain involved in lash extension groups with other artists to learn, network and stay current on trends. My motto is to learn from people who are better than you. Q5.-Where do you see Monika and Eyeconic Lash Studio in five years? overcoming trauma, or making them feel more beautiful. Plus, I had personally been getting eyelash extensions since 2003, so I was an avid client and knew others would love them as much as I did. Bottom line, I enjoyed making women feel better about themselves through trauma counseling and/or makeup artist roles, and I transitioned that to my studio today. I personalize each client’s eyelashes according to their eye shape and facial features while giving them opportunities to talk to me about anything, as I offer them a neutral opinion, or a listening ear. Being a lash artist is therapeutic for me, as well as a creative outlet. My open minded and listening ears and heart provides a safe place for my clients to talk and then face the world again with both inner and outer confidence. I love the rapport and relationships I get to develop along the way. It never gets boring. I will continue to train and work on my art both creatively, and with a solid business foundation as I understand more about the investment it takes from your professional client relationship. In this industry, even though it’s been around for a good bit of time, there are advancements in adhesives, techniques, styles, lashes, tools and aftercare. I enjoy the challenge, except the change and positive momentum toward growth, and recognize there is still room to expand, improve and learn. We are in an exciting time with the lash extension industry and I can’t wait to see what’s in store.

Above: EyeConic Lash Studio Team

Q4.-When lash artists fill their daily hourly client bookings, with full sets and lash infills, you start to cap out on your maximum potential financial earnings. What have you done to help gain additional income to ensure you continue a steady climb financially? What has been your business model thus far as it relates to adding retail products, additional employees, upgrading service offerings, etc.? All the above! I started small, renting a room, and eventually expanded into my own studio as my client base grew. Before beginning Eyeconic, I was not a small business owner, and I had to gain business and financial acumen through learning and studying. I initially found a free resource – a podcast called Business Boutique. This podcast changed my perspective on how to set a price range and not feel guilty about making a living doing what I love. While I got into the business accidentally, it is so much more than a hobby and requires passion and dedication. Since starting my studio, I have added retail, which is growing steadily with demand and skincare services and upgrades, such as Endure products, facial massage, lash tinting and other services. My business model is to provide a high level of customer service, an exceptional experience which equals value. I set my prices by knowing my worth, consideration of cost of

I plan to always value quality over quantity, and I will continue training, learning and evolving. I want to keep my one shop and make it the best with my exceptional staff. I would love to do pop ups to provide lashes at different businesses around the world. As much as I love Texas, I love to travel, so visiting other states and countries is a goal. My team and I recently went to El Salvador to practice and provide lashes for some of the local women. Their smiles when they looked in the mirror were worth it! I want to bring that experience to other women in and out of Texas. I have been blessed and am looking forward to what the future may bring. Y’all, I cannot get enough of this lovely, faithful, compassionate, and southern woman, Monika. Yes! The answer to where my heart is, and always will be… is in Texas because of the HEART in MONIKA!

Loreta's Instagram

Hacking of

by Loreta Jasilionyte

At approximately 11:41 a.m. Sunday morning of March 4, the flawless_lashes_by_loreta Instagram account was taken over by an unknown hacker. The password was changed without my knowledge and I was locked out of my own business account. The account name was then changed to "Instagrammer" before presumably being disabled or worse, deleted. The account had roughly 88.5k followers and is essential to the business operating successfully. We were at an absolute loss but had to keep operating the business regardless. You can’t even imagine how difficult it was to keep up with busy business life, not show weakness and motivate the team when inside, I felt like whole businesses was falling apart. These days, social media plays huge role and it is important tool to have. It took me few days to clear my mind and think of what could be done ASAP. The following days were stressful, and I was not receiving that much support

from Instagram or Facebook. Of course, when this happened to us, we searched Google to see if there was someone who had been hacked whether they got their account back. After reading different stories, blogs by famous Influencers, about how they were hacked, we noticed that our situation was completely different. Why is it different?

Many people reported you for spam – Instagram deleted or blocked your account

There were few reasons why accounts were hacked/deleted:

Random hackers found a way to get your account and asked for a huge amount of money

Hackers using your account for their own purposes, but changed the original account name

Si mple you r te a m had access and deliberately or accidentally deleted your account

Or someone hacked and deleted your account, as they wanted to harm your business The first four reasons, didn’t apply to us. How do I know this? The Instagram/ Facebook team can tell you this if you get their attention! We were devastated to hear this. It would’ve been better if some random hacker had hacked me. So after reading all these terrible stories and pulling hair over the fact that none of the advice given works for us, we still kept trying to reach Instagram. There is a form you can complete on Instagram so the bots reply to you, which were useless in our case. Eventually, we gave up emailing Instagram because its hard to get in touch with a real person.

38 - Lashes

We found a better way to get in touch, which was through our Facebook ads manager. It was a long process (three weeks or more in total) of back and forth with Facebook to first help them to understand what happened, but secondly to also verify my identity. This included tax statements and a deceleration letter swearing that this was Flawless Lashes property. Instagram/Facebook said the account was deleted and everywhere online says there was no hope, but with persistence, we managed to keep going and keep faith that we would get it back. I was send 10 emails per day. Yes, you’re right, what an annoying person. But this helped me a lot. Eventually, after confirming the identity of Loreta, we were on the last stages in what seemed to be getting the account back.

Above: Flawless Lashes Team

We cleared cache, cookies, copy and pasted the link they sent for reset into a browser instead of clicking, but nothing worked. Randomly last night, Grace from our PR was creating an Instagram story on our beauty account and noticed the flawless_lashes_by_loreta account was active. We couldn’t believe it. She then rang me and I checked my emails and there was an email, which I still couldn’t open. I forwarded it to Grace and we were inside.

The story has a happy ending. I want to say a huge thank you to all who supported our new account while we were trying to get the old one back. There are some nice people out there. And we won’t forget this. I, Loreta, will be doing live stories in more depth on how we got it back within a week. You can join the live video and ask questions. Do not miss this, we will announce the dates soon.

In the meantime, some quick advice on how to protect yourself from being hacked. Basically, its super hard. With all the privacy we had, we were still hacked. Someone must have really wanted us down. But if you don’t know, please at least have extra security: Never use same company email address as private information! Have the longest and most difficult password which contains letters, numbers and symbols! Have two-factor authentification/codes Only use Instagram if you know that your antivirus software is on! Trust your Instagram only to people you really rely on, with a contract in place! @flawless_lashes_by_loreta

Facebook and Instagram sent a lot of reset links, all of which didn’t work.

Story

Coral Johnson's

“Lashing” and lash extensions were introduced to me during a very hard time in my life. My partner and I were bouncing around from motels to Airbnbs. We recently moved to have a better life and at that point, we weren’t sure if it was going to work. One of those nights at an Airbnb, we met Trish. She was such a light in that dark place we were in, telling us stories about when she was just as low as we were but she found hope in a newly found passion. It was almost impossible to believe a person could turn their lives around with just a little bit of hope. Lashing is something that saves women. When I finally attended a class, I met Krys. She immediately saw my vitiligo and told me about how she makes her own white lashes. For years when it first showed up, I tried endlessly to cover it. As quickly as I tried to hide it, I realized that I donʼt have to. Many women have this condition and feel the need to hide behind makeup and beauty products. I started almost enhancing my condition, using white brow pomade to draw on just one brow where itʼs non-pigmented,wearing one colored contact on that side of my face.

40 - Lashes

When Krys told me she could extend my lashes with white just like my natural lashes, I couldnʼt say no. Youʼd never think something as simple as lashes could bring me to tears, but after she was done applying them, thatʼs all I could do. I cried not only for myself, but all those other women who can finally feel beautiful again. Or not feel different because they have white lashes and think they canʼt get beauty treatments. Women are making changes in this beauty industry to fit actual everyday women and thatʼs all we (women) want. Yes, it does bring unwanted attention or questions about my condition. At first, I didnʼt like it. But now, it gives me that opportunity to educate people on the condition. So, the next time they encounter a person with vitiligo, they can skip the ignorance. Also, as a freelance model, these lashes are seen in many forms for different projects I work on. They only add on to my unique face, like the last touches on a painting. I can only thank Krys for existing, being such a genuine spirit, and changing womenʼs lives with her craft.

Purpose?

What is your by Katie Gross

Founder of the Lash Artist Box and Suburban Lash

I believe each of us is born with a life purpose. To be successful, you must clearly identify, acknowledge and honor your purpose. Once you are able to clarify and understand this, you can make a plan of attack. For me, my passion and purpose is to help change the lives of those around me in a positive and uplifting way, and to leave the world a better place than the way I found it, even if it’s on a smaller scale. Pretty deep, right? It has taken me 16 years of working in the beauty industry

to finally realize this. I do this through owning a salon business that focuses mainly on lash and brow services, but also specialized hair cutting and colouring techniques and building a staff of truly happy people. Through offering these beauty services, I can help a person feel beautiful, not just on the outside, but on the inside as well. My purpose for writing this article is to help you to uncover and understand what you’ve been put on this earth to do

– and then pursue that dream or goal with passion and enthusiasm. To create a balanced and successful life, your vision for your goals needs to include the following seven areas: work and career, finances, recreation and free time, health and fitness, relationships, personal goals and contribution to the community. In the beginning, it is not necessary to know exactly how you are going to get there. All that is important is that you figure out where “there” is. If you get clear on the what, the how will show up. In the journey from where you are to where you want to be, you need to uncover what success looks like to you. The main reason people don’t get what they want is because they haven’t decided what they want. Do you remember in the movie The Notebook when Noah asks Ally, “What do you want? What do you WANT?!” And she didn’t have an answer? This is a perfect (romance movie) example of someone who hasn’t decided what she wants. So now pretend I’m Noah and I’m standing in front of you looking hunky and sexy and asking YOU, “What do you want?!” One of the best strategies to help you uncover what it is you want out of this one life you live is to gain clarity through making a list. If you’ve read any of my articles, you have learned by now that I am a huge advocate of list making. I recommend spending 20-30 minutes jotting down a list of things you want to be, do and have. You will find in the first few minutes you will write down things like, “I want a BMW. I want to own a house with a pool. I want to have a lot of money” and so on. However, toward the

42 - Lashes

end of your list, you may come to find yourself writing down thoughts like, “I want to impact my community. I want to feel empowered and I want to teach others to do the same”. These are truer expressions of your core values. High achievers have big visions. How big do you want to dream and how honest can you be about making it happen? You may have dreamed of starting your own business as a part of your bigger picture as I have. In one way or another, most of us buy into the big dream. Owning a home, having a nice car and money in the bank are fundamentals for the dream, and for those with an entrepreneurial spirit, owning your business is the ultimate goal. The

appeal of owning one’s own business is particularly strong in the beauty industry where opportunities are so exciting and things are always growing and changing. But keep in mind that starting your own business, or even working for yourself, is an enormous responsibility. Before making a move, you must have goals and a vision mapped out for your career. Make sure these goals are really clear for what you want your lifestyle to look like. Also, don’t let anyone talk you out of your vision. People are great at projecting their fears onto you, so work toward any goal with your blinders on. Stay focused on the outcome you want for yourself and remember, it isn’t easy. If getting what we wanted was easy, we would all

be living our best lives. Some people give up long before the fight is over, but imagine if they just gave it one more week, a month or a year. Are you in it to win it? Or are you in it only until the hill gets steeper, the road gets windier and the battle gets tougher? Abraham Lincoln once said, “Things may come to those who wait, but only the things left by those who hustle”. You deserve to have everything in your life exactly the way you want it. Believe in yourself (make a list first!) and go for it!

Taking Your Training

On the Road

by Jessika Aude Gautier Owner/Founder at Star Lashes World and World Beauty University

Thanks to social media, your work, photos, videos and posts travel worldwide daily. There are no more borders. If you work really hard and create beautiful lash sets, create your own style and your own techniques, there will come a time in your career when lash artists from around the globe will want you to train them, will want to benefit from your experience, your talent and your special skills. Some will be willing to travel to you, but others would rather you go to them. If you love travelling as I do, you will want to say yes to everybody and travel the world. Taking your training on the road is quite exiting, but a lot of work. You will need to plan everything carefully in order avoid any surprises. There are a few ways to do it: organizing everything yourself or with your own team, having someone host you, or partnering up with another trainer and splitting the to do list. ORGANIZING YOUR OWN ON THE ROAD TRAINING If you’re organizing your own training, you will have total control of every detail, insurance that everything has

been taking care of. First, you’ll need to find a venue. You can go expensive and wow, or you can go for a more modest venue. Of course, if you go more modest, there’s more profit left for you. I have a tendency to get carried away and go for amazing venues where everything is pretty, beautiful and perfect when I do it myself, especially when I go to exotic destinations. But, that’s me, I have always been a little intense.

Make sure you have access to tables and chairs. This is usually not a problem. You are going to need massage beds for the hands-on part of the training. Make sure that they rent beds in the city you are travelling to. A lot of cities don’t, and you’ll be stuck buying some. It happened to me once. I had a group of 12 booked, and no beds to rent. I had to buy some and resell them. But, you learn from your mistakes. Now I plan ahead and don’t assume. You are also going to need good lighting. If you give a top of the line advanced volume training session, that students pay a lot of money for, they deserve and need to have good lighting. When I am able to, I’ll take my Glamcor on the road. When I can’t take them with me, I’ll have Glamcor ship the lamps to the venue directly. HAVING SOMEONE HOST YOU The second way you could go for, is having someone host you. I personally offer free training for the host. They are in charge of organizing everything, and they can make a little profit if they stay under budget. In this situation, you are less in control. You leave things in a stranger’s hands. It is a little bit of the unknown, your host is often on the other side of the world, usually in a different time zone, and sometimes there’s a language barrier. Make sure you are in constant communication, and that everything is clear between you two. There might be a few things that will not be as you expected, but it is not the end of the world. You are there to share your passion, and teach your skills to thirsty lash artists who will probably become friends for life.

If you have someone host for you, please be kind and grateful, remember that its a lot of hard work, and without that person, you would not have had the chance to be there.

Why you should be working with

your regulatory agencies by Molly O’Bryant

Owner of A Touch of Lash

We all are familiar with wanting to face palm when dealing with a regulatory agency. Their reputation and persona preced them and they’re often thought to be as helpful as Oscar the Grouch. Perhaps it’s because they are the ones who make the rules that we have to ‘live’ by and, in a way, that makes them a scary figure to have to deal with. However, it truly is just a stereotype and the relationship between regulatory boards and lash artists doesn’t have to be a frightening one. In fact, your governing agency, or state board, is supposed to be your biggest ally and resource for when you need help and guidance. However, at this point in the lash industry, it is the agencies that are in need of our help and guidance. Let’s be honest, the information being taught in the local schools and the vague, barely-there laws for the lash industry are outdated and don’t even cover a third of what we need to know to practice safe lashing services. Most of the state board regulations on lash extensions pertain to ‘lash tabbing’ and strip lashes, not single strand lash extensions that lash artists are working with. Some regulations have evolved slightly from the prehistoric standards that the industry first adopted, but the majority of the laws have not. Here’s a secret – lash extension services aren’t going away and the industry is only going to keep growing and evolving. Here’s another secret – when the lash industry became popular, the local regulatory boards weren’t knowledgeable enough about the service to properly govern it. They scrambled and threw together some laws and regulations from similar industries like skin, hair and nails that made sense at the time. In reality, what we were left with was vague details on how to be in compliance with the board, but not proper laws and guidelines needed for lash artistry. Even from the beginning of the lash industry, we were already behind in regulating this service. But what can we do? Well, we are the experts in this field and as the professionals, we are the perfect resource to help create a positive, informative relationship with the

48 - Lashes

regulatory boards so as to encourage industry growth and change. Getting more specific with the lash industry’s regulations will provide guidelines to make sure that artists know exactly how to comply with the laws of their area and what is expected of them not only as an esthetician or cosmetologist, but also as a lash artist. Things like properly sanitizing your work area, lash chairs, and tables, storing your lash products, and cleaning your lash tiles may all seem like no-brainers to those of us who have been doing it for so long, but where is the actual written law, or regulation, backing up the cleansing process? Where does it state how the board requires the lash tiles or extensions to be sanitized? Does the board even know what a lash tile is? Another popular trend, which is posing a concern for our industry, would be lash training courses and who can legally teach a lash course and what subjects should be mandatory in that course. Training courses are popping up all over the world, but the requirements and laws for a lash curriculum have not caught up at this time. My point is that many regulatory boards do not understand that there are details that have slipped through the cracks over the years and that lash artists are actively searching for them. However, those and many other regulations are nonexistent at this time.

For these and many other reasons, it is important for educated and experienced lash artists to reach out to their regulatory boards to encourage growth and up to date regulations. Working directly with your board representatives on areas of concern and providing them with professional knowledge on updated techniques, products, cleansing and lashing routines is imperative to keeping the lash regulations up to date and the industry safe for your future clients and lash artists. The lash industry is changing on many levels and the regulatory boards cannot be expected to keep up with all of these changes. This should be important to every artist so that the regulations are up to date, preventing unsafe working habits from occurring due to lack knowledge. This in turn will create and continue to ensure a positive relationship between the regulatory boards, the lash artists, and of course, the clients. I promise, if you go into your regulatory board’s office and present them with details on how to handle these changes on a governing level, they will be receptive and look to you as a knowledgeable professional who is interested in keeping the lash industry safe for everyone. Be the change you wish to see in your community and help change the outdated regulations in your area.

Lash eXtend’s Yvonne van Wieren tells her story I've been interested in beauty since childhood. I was always messing about with my hair and makeup, constantly trying new things. After a somewhat chaotic time at high school, I finally finished my university education and started working as an executive security at a large insurance firm. I soon realised that I was a natural at organising things, especially multiple things at the same time. In the meantime, I had a converted a spare bedroom in my house into a home salon. Besides my day job, I provided services such as hair extensions and nail art for a small group of clients. I also remained on the lookout for new treatments and challenges. I attended countless beauty fairs during those years. Looking at all the beautiful exhibition stands, I dreamed of having my own brand someday. I saw numerous examples of companies doing things that I thought could be done better or more professionally. I slowly developed a vision of how to (and how not to) run a beauty company.

The ‘wow’ effect! The first time I tried eyelash extensions was sometime in 2010. I still remember like it was yesterday. Wow! That's what I was looking for. It was amazing to see how wearing eyelash extensions can change your entire face! I had found my passion, and I wanted to give other women the same experience. After a brief search, I discovered I could count the number of salons offering eyelash extensions on one hand. In that moment, my drive, business instinct, and passion for the beauty industry all came together. I had to tap into this obvious gap in the market! My brain went into overdrive, and I was inspired by everything around me. My desire for quality also came in handy. I don't settle for mediocrity; I only want to work with the best products, so that my brand stands head and shoulders above the rest. I had 2 years of anonymity to prepare - finding and testing suppliers, putting

50 - Lashes

together a product range, arranging a small loan, and drawing up a business plan. Of course, I also had to become proficient in applying eyelash extensions. That's why I took a number of training courses overseas to familiarise myself with all the relevant techniques. I spent countless evenings practising on anyone who was available and open to trying out eyelash extensions. This was a fun way to learn what I was doing right and what still needed work. Looking back, it was a crucial part of my preparation. A f ter 18 mont h s , p erh ap s understandably, I could no longer contain my enthusiasm and told some of my salon clients I was hoping to start my own business. Everyone reacted enthusiastically but, as this was during the 2012 global financial crisis, they had their reservations.

To do: the webshop An important item on my to-do list during the startup phase was to have a webshop set up so I could sell my products. One of my salon clients knew someone who could help - that was Wim. At the time, Wim was working as a freelance web developer. He still works at Lash eXtend, and has been with us from the very beginning. We worked together to design and build the webshop from October to December 2012. This all happened at the kitchen

table, as I didn't have an office yet. In the meantime, I had already commissioned a logo and house style and claimed a series of domain names. In those early days, these were still available. I knew one thing for sure: the Netherlands would soon be too small a market for me, and I definitely wanted to take my business overseas. After deciding on January 1, 2013 as an official start date, the time came to quit my day job in 2012. That took a while, because going from a guaranteed monthly salary to the unpredictability of entrepreneurship is always a gamble. Although I was reasonably certain I could serve a growing market with my new business, there were often times when doubt crept in. I still remember when one of my first deliveries of eyelash extensions went wrong - the products were poor quality and certainly not of the calibre I was looking for. I had no choice but to order everything again, while the clock was ticking. I could have cried! However, as a former executive secretary, I was used to dealing with unforeseen circumstances. So I told myself: keep looking forward and don't give up!

The official start I was very proud when www.lashextend. nl went live at midnight on January 1, 2013! It was a success - Lash eXtend had officially opened and I couldn't believe my luck. When the first orders came in that very day, I knew I'd made the right choice. That initial period was quite the rollercoaster - full of surprises - but through trial and error we always ensured our customers were happy. A real milestone was the first time we attended a beauty fair in Utrecht. I had my own stand made by my father, a former furniture maker. We started

with a 9m2 stand, essentially a mini stand compared to the 80m2 one we currently use for our exhibits. But we were very proud! The fair was a great success in terms of both name recognition and sales. We regularly sent out mailings with promotions, and our customer base continued to grow steadily.

Training As well as providing eyelash extensions and selling associated salon supplies, we also began developing and holding training courses. The aim of this was to help existing salon owners learn a new skill and enable them to offer eyelash extension services. We focus on quality in our products and training courses - the Lash eXtend diploma awarded to salon owners following successful training has to be worth something! Seven years later, we now offer a number of training courses for a variety of techniques and levels. This means we can help beginner stylists as well as experienced professionals. Our courses are now offered worldwide too - we organise on-site training sessions with clients, at their location if desired. We either travel to our customers or provide training through an e-learning

development that is currently still in development. The Lash eXtend team grew steadily during the first few years. We hired employees to handle webshop orders, as well as eyelash stylists and trainers. These employees had earned their stripes in the eyelash business and were qualified to call themselves lash artists. I personally selected these stylists from a large pool of candidates. Thanks to my experience with applying eyelashes and my attention to detail, I've developed an eye for talent. I have a knack for finding the best stylists. Frankly, the entire Lash eXtend team is made up of employees who each excel in their specific field. As we all share the same passion for quality, we also keep each other on our toes. Our team is definitely not lacking in (healthy) competitive spirit. Our trainers take part in various international competitions, and frequently win prizes. To maintain their skills, we have our own salon - the Lash eXtend Experience Center, where we apply eyelashes for our own clients every day. I have regularly been invited to sit on the jury for international competitions for a number of years now.

Above: Lash eXtend team

This involves a lot of flying, all over the world. Judging at these competitions also helps me maintain and expand my professional network.

International growth After attending our first trade fairs in the Netherlands, Lash eXtend's scope soon began to expand into the Belgian market. Several other European countries followed. Eyelash extensions became a real trend, and the ability to apply these is still indispensible to this day. I often hear from third parties that Lash eXtend has made an important contribution to the growth of the eyelash industry, which makes me very proud.

Events I intended to plan something spectacular in 2015, and so the idea for the first Lash Conference was born. A number of leading lash artists from overseas were invited to give a presentation and a demo. All participating eyelash stylists, both local and from abroad, had the opportunity to meet their international colleagues and industry leaders in person. We also held various 'battles'. The event, held

Lashes - 51

at the Mövenpick hotel in Amsterdam, was a huge success and definitely put Lash eXtend on the map. After the 2016 edition, we raised the bar in 2018 by holding the first Lash World Cup. Organising this event was a big job, and the entire Lash eXtend team helped out. It was all worth it in the end - the event was a huge success! We received guests from all over the world. As well as European lash stylists, we also met participants from Japan, Australia, the US, and Latin America. We are already working on the upcoming 2020 edition of the Lash World Cup! I still manage Lash eXtend on a day to day basis. However, I am also focused on the company's long-term viability. Consistent innovation efforts and keeping an eye out for new products

and techniques are the only way to ensure we continue to grow. This also means we will have to take (financial) risks from time to time, which isn't always easy. Fortunately, that makes it even more satisfying when things turn out well!

Our Bunschoten location is also becoming untenable, and this will continue if our plans for expansion over the coming years are any indication. Lash eXtend is still growing steadily by the year, and we expect this growth to ramp up over the next few years! In spring 2019, we will attend four major European cosmetics fairs within a month. Starting in Bologna, Italy, we will then visit Brussels, then Düsseldorf, and finally Utrecht. Organising this was no small feat, schedule-wise.

Brand From 2012 to 2017, our office was located in Amersfoort. Due to our rapid international growth, we quickly outgrew this location. After searching for suitable premises for over a year, we moved to Bunschoten in 2018. This is where we operate from today. Unfortunately, a large part of our stock was destroyed in a fire in November 2018. That was a low point, but we made it through with the help of our outstanding team.

CEO and Mother

Left:Yvonne Van Wieran

In the meantime, I have stopped providing eyelash services and now manage the business full-time. When I started Lash eXtend, I was single and had a busy social life. Unfortunately, as the CEO of such a dynamic company, there's very little time for a private life nowadays. Attending parties and festivals takes much more planning with such a busy schedule. I now live with my partner Niels, and we welcomed our daughter Romée at the end of 2017. I combine motherhood with my work as a CEO. To facilitate this, we have a very sweet nanny who takes care of Romée and regularly brings her into the office so I can spend more time with my child. In fact, Romée and her nanny will soon join us overseas when Lash eXtend attends various trade fairs! This brings me comfort because no matter how much stress I'm under or how busy I am, hearing Romée laugh always brightens my day.. Our focus is on delivering quality and keeping our products and services package up-to-date. I make sure I'm on top of the latest trends, or set trends myself, to ensure Lash eXtend stays ahead of the competition and continues to grow. Coming up with new ideas and improvements while simultaneously running the business is a big challenge, but it's all worth it. To this day, I have no regrets about daring to quit my job in order to pursue my dream of building my own brand!

Being one of Lash Inc’s journalists I reached out to you first to see if it was something I could do through you and I’m extremely happy that I’ve begun to

Charlene Nutter

set up being an educator through Lash Inc. Academy. There are so many out there who aren’t properly educated and are teaching themselves how to apply eyelash extensions. I want to offer an affordable, thorough class to help them better their art in eyelash extensions. 3) What is your definition of being a successful lash artist? Being a successful lash artist to me is being educated continually so I can offer my clients services that don’t harm the integrity of their lashes. Being a lash artist for 15 years I have experienced work from others who offer lash extensions and their work is harming the natural lash. Through my many certification classes, I have learned there is a safe method of applying lash extensions. This is what I teach and continually follow. Being successful is putting my client's needs first through my education, knowledge, and concern for their safety. 4) What is your definition of being a successful business owner? Being a successful business owner I feel is following state laws, providing a clean, aesthetic space for my clients, helping people become aware of the services being offered, offering services that enhance their beauty without harming the integrity of their lashes or skin. I always provide a contact number in case they have some sort of reaction. 5) In your experience how do you become a successful lash artist? I feel I have become a successful lash artist as my clients know I continue educating myself so I can offer them the best quality lashes and adhesive that will give them the best hold and retention. I educate them on aftercare to help keep their natural lashes healthy and give their extensions the healthiest, longest life. I continually educate myself through classes to stay on top of the different application processes and

to offer them the style that best suits them. One look or style doesn’t fit all. In looking at my client's face shape, size of the eyes and the look they’re going after helps me in creating what they want and using the diameter & length that is healthiest for their natural lashes. This is what has built trust over the years and brought me my clients as well as clients from other lash artists who possibly weren’t certified properly and were damaging their lashes. 6) How do you become a successful business owner? I’ve found it takes time, learning from mistakes, and help from others to become a successful business owner. Being a business owner involves a lot as there is setup, website, location, marketing, daily posts, community knowledge, etc. I have asked and learned from friends who own their own business. Staying on top of current happenings in the lash world, sharing that with clients and community. 7) What do you wish you had known when you started lashing that would have made the path to success easier? I wish I knew that there are many methods and tricks to use in eyelash extensions so I could have expanded my knowledge earlier. 8) Do you have any top tips you haven’t already mentioned in how to become a success in the Lash Industry? The main point I would bring out to others is to continually educate yourself. I don’t feel one class is enough. By taking different classes from different educators one grabs onto different knowledge that helps them grow. Practice, precision, focus.

Globally Loved

Australian Born, by Otto Mitter

Once upon a time, in the land down under there was a family. This family who were just like any other family, making their way through the journey of life finding their niche and following their dreams. This story is about the journey of this family, Australian born, who set out with a mission to lift the standards of the beauty industry throughout the world. We get some insight about this story from Otto Mitter the managing director of Australian beloved brand turned global phenomenon - Elleebana. We all get asked that question “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Otto recalls “The funny thing is a lot of us don't really know that answer right away. Along our travels we may try lots of different things to see how we fit in the world, see where our talents may lay, what excites us and all of a sudden along your way, you stop for a moment and look around and realise you have

end up in the place that you're meant to be.” “I think back to how my journey started in the beauty world, it was Gold Coast 1994, I was riding my bike back from school to my mother's beauty college Gold Coast Training Academy. I had grown up either at my mother’s salon or at the college and I spent most afternoons there, after school hanging around, cleaning the stock cupboards and wiping the notes from the teachers blackboards, subliminally immersed in both products and beauty knowledge and by the end of high school I was at a crossroads of where to go in life, not uncommon to many others at that age.”

The suggestion to study at the college while I found my feet seemed a little strange at first. “Shouldn't I be working on cars or building houses?” but I was also at the age of pushing boundaries and expanding my horizons so instead of following the masses - I took up my mother's offer and enrolled for the Cert 4 in makeup shortly followed by a variety of other modules of the beauty diploma finding more enjoyment that I had anticipated and quickly sharing the passion for the industry that was ingrained in my household. My family completely occupied themselves within the beauty industry from writing the first competencybased beauty courses in Australia, running a successful beauty college, to the production and distribution of professional use only beauty products ranging from skincare, wax supplies, massage tables, equipment and eyelash and brow products. I grew up being surrounded by very influential people, experiencing tradeshows and industry associations from their inception in Australia and observing and absorbing all of what I could from the industry greats. Being a naturally creative person, my makeup studies saw me drawn towards the world of lash and brow and pursued this avenue and met with the producers of various lash and brow tint brands. Exposing me to the world of production – something I found exciting and challenging. It seemed again another natural progression for me to study personal care formulation and cosmetic chemistry to further help the development of my knowledge, skills and my family’s brand Elleebana. Our family’s company, producers of Elleebana, started before the internet really took off, it was modest business that had all the challenges that most

54 - Lashes

companies face. I do have to attribute a portion of the company’s expansion to the world of social media and how international relationships became much easier thanks to the internet. Before that travelling to tradeshows internationally was the only way to build international relationships, which was a costly affair for companies and time consuming since Australia is so far from the rest of the world. Suddenly, I could forge industry relationships with international connections without leaving the office and it wasn’t long before my social media presence helped to spread the news of our brand from Australia called Elleebana. Exportation for our company seemed like a pipe dream when I first considered it, the cost of production is so much higher here so this was a challenge and I was unsure of if we could make that work or seem enticing to both international distributors as well as viable for our business. The overseas market was starting to see Australia as holding a solid reputation for quality products, good ethics, reliable and trustworthy people to do business with and the international word spread of how good the results were with our products and our popularity grew.

The offer of being a guest speaker at various global conferences and competitions around the world started to flood in. My schedule just got busier and busier and in 2018 I was away for over three months of the year touring internationally. This in addition to my local commitments and performing many classes. The schedule just got busier and busier and the feedback from my classes got better and better, which inspired me to push further and harder than ever before. In 2017 I was very fortunate to be able to take home the title "Educator of the Year" at the ABIA's which was quickly followed with Educator of the Year at the 2018 NALA Awards in Canada. This was such a highlight in my career and saw a lot of internal reflection on my years as an educator. Education has always been a huge focus for our brand, our products require specialised education so that you can obtain optimum results for your clients. Writing courses and educational content is something that we do regularly and when I first started teaching, I had some moments where I struggled. I questioned whether this was something I even wanted to do with my life. Early in my teaching days I recall a class where I lost all train of thought and froze. I had to take a five-

minute break, regain composure and walk back in and finish the class. It was a tough moment for me personally, I was seriously asking myself if I had what it takes to be an educator. At the end of the day I apologised to my students, told them honestly how I was feeling and questioning my place in the world as an educator - the support I received in return from these glorious students was and still is my inspiration to keep going. Nothing quite like a moment of raw truth to keep you humble but also nothing like the compassion of others in the industry to inspire you to be better. I shared this experience with each trainer that comes to work with me as I feel it’s a good lesson – failure is how we learn, encouragement is when we strive for more and thanks to the support of my family and my wonderful team I am always motivated to keep going and working on my professional development as an educator and as a business mentor. In 2015 we launched the industry’s first global Elleebana trainers’ symposiums, another significant moment in the brand's journey. Sharing the pictures and the videos of all our global trainers and distribution teams coming together, at our symposium, saw the lash and brow industry inspired and other

brands started doing it also. It gave me a great feeling knowing that we must be doing something right and helping to set trend of education betterment within our industry. Fast forward to January 2019, I sat down and assessed our company’s growth and had to pinch myself. Elleebana is now distributed to 57 countries around the world and growing with millions of treatments being performed per year using our brand. A big part of our success and growth is not only the great products but the people within our team and their dedication and work ethic. I've said this time and time again you can have amazing products, but you really need a team of amazing people working with you, sharing your vision to help a company and brand reach its full potential. My wife Zoe, General Manager of Elleebana Global, has been such an inf luence for me and my pillar of strength, I say that she is my voice of reason! My role in the company is the visionary and developer, Zoe helps me make sense of my ideas, tames them when they need taming or boosts my creativity when they are viable thoughts. Together we bring them to fruition and together we watch them fly.

Many days this can be a challenge, and people I have met have said that they wouldn’t be able to do it, but we continue to defy the odds and we make such a dynamic team in turn inspiring many along the way, it really has been truly enlightening for myself, challenging not only my business mind and my creative nature but also my marriage has only ever meant we needed to work harder than others and I’m so proud of what we have achieved. We have expanded into product development on many levels with professional use only products and cosmetics related to the world of lash and brow and we are now expanding into online education and continued professional development for educators around the world. Our goals are ambitious but at the same time a simple philosophy, we strive towards being a brand that is innovative with integrity and being supportive to our industry. We are not all about success for our brand only, but also helping others to succeed in this industry. Over the last 12 months we have been key sponsors with over 30 different lash conferences and competitions and major beauty events around the world. Many of these events are put on by our competitors, but we get a real kick out of seeing up and

coming lash and brow artists succeed in their careers. Yes, we are very fortunate that with all the hard work it started to pay off and we can now afford to invest back into our community, and we are more than happy to do so, as we really want the world to know that we give back to our industry. 2019 is going to be one of the biggest years yet in the history of the company, 23 years in business we are pushing harder than ever before to be innovative and influential and continue to lift the standards to new heights around the globe and importantly spread the word that Australian brands can stand out in the crowd and make difference.

My family and I are planning our family reunion, which will be held in Jamaica this year. During the planning process, we came across some old letters that family members wrote to my grandma back in Jamaica. My dad found a letter that I wrote to my grandmother when I was 10 years old. In the letter, I told my grandmother that my mom took me to SAM’s and I bought candy in bulk to sell. This is something that I did often, I had my own candy business. I also told her that I was going to make more money this time around, more than I ever did before. I decided, I would talk to my uncle, professionally (not sure what professional sounds like coming from a child), and ask my uncle for a $100 loan. With this loan I could purchase more candy and buy myself a new radio.

We have to think of creative strategies to make money, doing what we love. First, create a plan of action. A plan will help you to strategize your process in order to reach your goals. Include market research, your vision and goals and a marketing strategy. Keep the end in mind.

Even as a child entrepreneur, I had to think of creative ways to make more money doing what I loved.

Within your marketing strategy, do some research. Look around, what are your competitors doing? Don’t be afraid to borrow from others. If their idea worked, just put your twist on it. Also, seek out new and innovative ways to market yourself. Figure out how you can set yourself apart or create a niche for yourself. Example: You only provide volume lash services. You add a complimentary brow wax with every set. You specialize in wedding sets.

As lash pros, we love what we do, but we have to make a profit in order to sustain our business, take care of our families, or just to keep the lights on.

After you figure out your marketing strategy, create an inf luencer and ambassador program. We live in the day and age of social media. Direct

58 - Lashes

to consumer marketing is what I call it. You have been given a gift through social media, use it, and reach your audience instantly (I will discuss social media and influencer marketing in a later article).

Then, implement, execute, implement, execute. If your business is something that you love, it will not feel like work to you. The next step will be choosing where you want to take your next vacation.

History of trachoma:

why the most important milestone is now

by Sightsavers

A blinding eye disease which has plagued humanity since antiquity, is now on the verge of being eliminated. A blinding eye disease which has plagued humanity since antiquity, is now on the verge of being eliminated. Trachoma is the world’s leading cause of infectious blindness and if left untreated, can turn eyelashes inwards so with every blink they scrape against the ball of the eye, slowly and excruciatingly turning people blind. It wasn’t until the 20th century that the cause of the disease was discovered, enabling it to be treated, but it has been around for more than 10,000 years. Evidence of it has been found in Ice Age skeletons in Australia, and hieroglyphs on ancient Nubian tombs show a weeping eye next to tweezers, still used today by trachoma patients to pluck out their eyelashes and ease the pain. Plato wrote about it, St Francis of Assisi almost certainly had it and it became a major public health problem in the UK in Victorian times after soldiers brought it back from the Napoleonic Wars. Just last century, it was one of the main reasons immigrants to the US were turned away.

Now we have arrived at a new milestone in trachoma’s history – its impending end. A $105million fund has been set up by leading philanthropists to eliminate it as a public health problem across the world. Simon Bush, Sightsavers’ Director of Neglected Tropical Diseases, said: “From ancient manuscripts to Dickens novels and Hollywood films – the footprint of trachoma can be found throughout history. “For me, though, the most important moment is now. This agonising, blinding disease is on the cusp of being eliminated – we are making history. An incredible group of communities, governments and international organisations have come together to bring us to this point. “We must look back as well as forward to celebrate this landmark, and maintain momentum. Only by acknowledging how long this disease has been around, and how much devastation it has caused, can we understand how much is being achieved and why.”

The Accelerate Trachoma Elimination Programme is a collaboration of funders including the Bill & Melinda Gate s Fou nd at ion, Ch i ld ren’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF), The ELMA Foundation UK, UK aid and Virgin Unite with Sightsavers. It aims to accelerate the end of blinding trachoma in 10 countries and significantly boost progress in others. It is now within our grasp to help make history and rid the world of this painful disease, but more funding and support is needed to finish the job entirely. Sightsavers has launched The End is in Sight campaign to eliminate the disease in the countries where we work by 2025. What’s more, from 15 February to 15 May 2019 the UK government will match all donations, up to a total of £2 million, enabling us to help twice as many people. Network Marketing Is the Perfect Fit for Me

-How About You? by Wendy Kirkham

If you've managed to build a successful eyelash extensions business, congratulations — I can only imagine the blood, sweat and tears you've put into it. All of us, however, have room for personal and professional growth. With that in mind, have you ever considered establishing a part-time side business? One that could make your retirement more comfortable, help pay for your children's college education or allow you to finally take that dream vacation? For meeting goals like these, network marketing can provide the ideal solution. Also known as direct sales or multilevel marketing, network marketing involves selling a product line directly to personal contacts. You receive a percentage of those sales and of those made by the sales representatives you recruit to the company. Network marketing of fers the opportunity to supplement — or even replace — your current income. And you'll still have time to keep running your current business. Top Five Benefits A quick summary of my story: I am a single mom with two boys and live in a rural part of the United States. In 2013, at age 46, I quit my job as a pharmacist to join a network marketing organization in the cosmetics field. I've since ascended to the top leadership rank in the company and have a team of nearly 300,000 reps in 13 countries. Based on my experience, here are the top five benefits of working in a makeup network marketing organization.

1. Low startup and ongoing cost Starting a typical brick-and-mortar business requires an upfront investment of $10,000 to $100,000 USD. Then there are the monthly costs — payroll, leasing space, insurance, inventory, etc. My network marketing company requires only a $99 investment (and includes a free website). Moving forward, you spend less than $42 a month to run your business.

there's no cap on how much money you can make. If you work hard, continually improve your skills and commit to building a powerhouse team, the sky's the limit. 5. Working from wherever you like The virtual nature of network marketing gives you freedom. If, like me, you want to live on a farm about 175 miles away from the nearest city, that's fine. If you want to work at night while vacationing at the beach or touring Europe, it's totally doable. As long as you have your smartphone and a working internet connection, you'll be all set.

2. Multiple revenue streams A Final Word As mentioned above, with the network marketing model, you not only generate income from the sales you make but also receive a commission on the sales your reps make. This provides motivation to train your team well, as you'll share in their success. 3. Residual income Residual income is money that continues to come in long after you've done the work. For example, if I sell an eyeliner and lipstick to a new customer, I'll receive a commission on that sale and on every purchase she makes in the future. The same goes for all the customers my reps bring in. The longer I stay with the company, the more residual income I'm likely to earn each year. 4. No income limits

Please keep in mind: Network marketing isn't for those looking to get rich quick. You need patience, determination and fortitude to prosper. But if you have those qualities — and the courage to take the leap — joining a makeup network marketing organization can be the smartest decision you ever make. Feel free to contact me to learn more

Making more money

doing what you love by Alena Skodic

You have your main job, but you are dreaming of your own beauty studio? You make a good salary and you fear you will not achieve the same when you open your own business? You would change something, but you do not know how and you are not sure you will be successful. Do you love what you do? And you want to make money doing what you love? You need a good plan. 1. You need to leave your comfort zone. You should be ready to do something completely new, as what you did yesterday leads you where you are today. If you are not satisfied with this “place”, do more or new activities to achieve what you really want. 2. Take a sheet of paper and divide it into two columns. In first column, you should write all the advantages of your new job and all disadvantages in the second one. If you get more advantages, then maybe it’s time to set a goal and make some changes in you career. 3. In order for goals to be fulfilled, energy is needed. But it ends periodically. Find something that will constantly motivate you and force you to move forward. Maybe it will be some kind of motivational literature or music. You can use a variety of techniques and exercises that help you get motivated. Understand where you will use energy

62 - Lashes

to achieve goals, do not slow down when it gets difficult and keep going.

Write the steps to start your business. And then write small tasks for each step. For example – one step: “Pick your salon location”. Tasks:

4. Next, you need to establish your chosen path. You should be 100 per cent sure you are going to go this way. Either you have huge success or you have bad days with not enough customers and low income. You need to gain this unshakable confidence in achieving all of your goals and the energy to realise them. You must have a one-track mind and faith in the fact that everything will work out. Without this, it is pointless to move further and take the next steps. If you do not have enough faith and you doubt that you will succeed, you may not even begin, and you can fail. 5. After you have established your direction and understand that you are ready to devote your whole life to it, write down specific instructions.

• make your salon easy to find, • know the local clientele, • research competitors, • set up close to other relevant businesses, • set your budget (the cost of setting up a salon), • consider the size of the salon you need. When your plan is complete, you will have clear understanding how to realise your goals and ideas. Here, the results are just inevitable. All that remains is doing it!

As an eyelash extension artist and an educator, I feel very fortunate to be in a profession I love and make the money to live comfortably. Not many people have that. Starting my career in esthetics 26 years ago began my journey. I blame a certified lash extension artist 15 years ago. At the time, it was slow as lash extensions were fairly new in the New England area, so they were not bringing in a lot of extra income. A little over a year later, Novalash asked me if I was interested in becoming their New Hampshire trainer. I accepted and was trained by a doctor to educate others in the application and certification of lash extensions. This was a choice I’ve always been very happy I’ve made as it opened up a new world for my business, but mostly, to the joy in seeing how happy my clients were to have their eyes greatly enhanced by having lashes applied. Being an artist and educator in lash extensions grew fairly slowly though, as it was a new service that many weren’t aware of. Feeling I needed to help more people become educated in what eyelash extensions were and also letting other professionals learn about being certified in this became a goal. I began running ads in newspapers. This helped and new clients began booking appointments and the word spread. Nine years later, everyone was offering eyelash extensions so I needed to up my way of advertising and make people aware of “safely” choosing an eyelash extension artist and actually being certified, rather than watching a video on YouTube or letting a friend train them. I began by having a professional website created, which led future clients to either ask questions, make appointments, but mostly read about my history as a lash extensions artist and educator. They were also able to see that I was certified through more than one company and that I took my profession seriously and kept my education up to date so they were getting the best in eyelash extension application. Keeping my Google ad up to date was also important as people now search for local salons, spas and

74 - Lashes

studios that offer the service and I wanted to be the first one that came up. In eyelash extensions, there’s not a lot of aftercare for retail to clients. I have everything they need, but I needed to open up more to everything that affected the lash retention. I decided to begin offering skin care to make sure they were using a product that didn’t break down the lash adhesive and was also helping my clients’ skin. Next, I started offering makeup. We know the vast majority of woman use makeup every day, but certain ingredients can definitely break down the lash extension adhesive. Bringing in both skin care and makeup helped me not only increase my income, but it assured me that my clients were using a product that wouldn’t negatively affect the retention of their lash extensions. We have to remember that if our clients are happy, we’re happy. If their lashes have great retention, not only do they continue to see us, but they also refer others. By offering aftercare in every form, we can help with this. Finally, I decided to open my own Lash Inc Academy. This helped me offer more

classes to other professionals in classic and volume. Becoming a journalist at Lash Inc magazine also opened up my education and knowledge in lash extensions as I was corresponding with top lash artist and educators around the world. By staying aware of new products that help retention and continual classes that keep me knowledgeable on the latest lash extension styles, I’ve been able to increase my clientele, classes and income. Keeping up with the lash world can seem difficult. Take a deep breath and, if needed, get help from a professional regarding advertising. Put your name, education and skills out there for people to see. Make sure you are offering your clients aftercare in all forms, the best lash extensions and adhesive and always educate them on aftercare, skin care and makeup that doesn’t negatively affect the retention of the lash extensions. Follow the top lash educators and continue to take classes to stay at the top of your game. By doing this, you will gain a client base, increase your income and most of all, love what you do every day and see the joy on your clients’ faces.
