Letter from the Editor Welcome to this issue. It has been quite a year and will never be forgotten. The year the world came to a standstill, the Covid-19 pandemic took hold, and the beauty industry stopped. As I write this the UK beauty industry is only partially open, and the Lash Industry remains closed until 15th August, unless things change again by then. It is heartbreaking to think of the people who lost their lives during this time. Preserving life had to be the main focus of governments, however, there is no denying the devastating effect being closed has had on most peoples lives. Not earning and the worry of everything has taken its toll on our mental and physical health. But now it is tome to pick ourselves back up and to prepare for the new future. Please take advantage of funding you can get for building your business again. There are many local funds as well as funds such as Bounce Back Loans and council grants. There is also an e-book I wrote called BUILD, available at lashincpro.com under Business courses and it is free. Next on to happier announcements! I am excited to announce Britta Krueger owner of Flirties and Leanne Harber owner of Ultimate are going me as Co-Editors for the remainder of 2020 and the rest of 2021. I have known both of these ladies for many years and always impressed with what they do in the industry. I can’t wait to get started with them. Here is to a better 2020.

An Interview with Mandy Clarke owner of Nailz2Beauty Salon and Nailz2Beauty Training Academy Isle of Man by Britta Krueger

M

andy, being on the Isle of Man, you were one of the first salons and academies who were able to go back

to work. Were you apprehensive about being in close contact with clients? We were very apprehensive going back, although we were prepared as I had started sourcing PPE the second week of lockdown, so we did have everything in place, we were told we were phase 4 and looking at July so it was a surprise in May when we could open ten days later.

clients were not ready to come back straight away.

How did your clients react to the fact you were able to offer appointments and treatments again?

What precautions did you have to put in place? (PPE, spacing out in the salon, limiting students in courses) We had a great system in place. Clients would ring the bell and wait for their therapist. The therapist would open the door to them wearing a mask and apron let them in. Ask them to use the sanitizer at the station by the door and ask them to put on their mask. If they didn’t have a mask we could provide one for £1 which I put in a charity box as we had a local company donate some masks to us.

Most clients were excited for us to be back open, once we had announced a date to open. I sat for two days arranging appointments. Some

We would then take their temperature with an infrared thermometer, we weren’t too sure how clients would react to this to start with,

but the feedback was great, they loved knowing what their temperature was (whoever takes their own). The therapist would then take the client to have their treatment, and the therapist wore gloves and additional visors depending on the treatment. We have five nail stations, four treatment rooms a brow bar area and a tanning area, as we had to social distance, we removed one of the nail stations to the brow bar area and made sure there was 2m distance between the remaining four. We installed sneeze guards and additional sterilising unifivets for each desk. Uur seats are velvet so we purchased some mechanic seat covers and change them after each client, the

treatment rooms are designated to therapists, and they are responsible for their rooms. We removed our waiting area because of the social distancing as we couldn’t adhere to that with the waiting area. We have had to reduce the number of clients in the salon throughout the day as we need extra time in between for deep cleaning. We had specific treatments we weren’t allowed to do to begin with. Being facials, semipermanent makeup - lips and nasal waxing, lip and chin waxing/threading were classed as high risk but could do these treatments with precaution; we would tell the client we were going to remove the mask and ask them not to talk. Unfortunately, we couldn’t do any training courses as first, and then we were allowed to do 1-1 training. How were the first few weeks back, and what is the feedback? We have had great feedback from clients

8 Lashes

saying they felt very safe and how we had thought of everything (I have to thank my husband for most, to be honest, he’ll love that). Do you think that things will get back to what they used to be or will it be a “new normal” that we have to get used to? We were discussing only today how we like how things are and although we have been COVID free for over 45 days now we are staying as we are for the foreseeable to continue to protect ourselves and our clients. What would be your advice for all the therapists who are eagerly waiting to go back to work? I would advise taking things at your own pace, if you are not ready don’t open, don’t feel pressure to do so, although I’m pretty sure everyone will be! Do a run-through first with a member of your household and anything you don’t feel sure if you can change, we put the bell system in last

minute, and it was the best thing, we all love it. Is there anything you would or could have done differently? I don’t honestly think there was anything we could have done any different, we followed guidelines from the government, everyone that came into the salon we took their name, address and contact number for government track and trace, did risk assessments on all treatments for COVID 19, we have left longer between clients which obviously does mean fewer clients, but it’s actually nice not to feel rushed and sometimes even managing to get a HOT coffee. Has your set up changed or have you made plans to adapt anything for the future? Our set up has changed, but I personally think for the better, and we are happy to keep things as they are.

Instagram for LASHMAKERS + One month content plan by Valeriia Sudilovskaya-Diachuk

I

nstagram presents a unique platform for lash artists to create visually engaging content, promote their services, and to connect with clients. Your page on Instagram is like having one big business card. Therefore, how it looks is very important. If a client sees a very beautiful page with interesting content – they will probably want buy whatever you’re selling. Below is a list of recommendations to consider when creating a new page or to incorporate into your existing page following a content plan. Here’s a little bit about my instagram business account @lash_house_crimea  It has 14.8K followers; 80% of our clients

book appointments through our page.  Pictures, text, and stories, are all created by me. I choose to personally do these tasks because this is how I feel and understand our visitors and clients. I create posts which all have a similar visual style. I also write about myself, which allows my clients to get to know me more.  I have an administrator who is responsible for booking appointments and responding to direct messages (scripts are used). Moreover, we also have an app where clients can book appointments themselves.  I discovered that clients are more attracted to your business and products when they see your face. This can easily be done in your stories or when you make posts. People like

to buy from people. In this way you can grow the trust of your audience and clientele. Below are 7 steps to make your Instagram page work for you

1

Select a good profile picture. A good picture could be your business logo, or even a picture of you! It’s common to find eyes or lashes being used as a lashmaker’s profile, but… let’s be different, unique, and special!

2

Complete your profile information Who are you, and what is your work or interests? Even better- give a reason why are you special. Location. How to make a purchase or book an appointment

Lashes 9

3 4

Highlights Pricing, location and directions, customer reviews, work place environment, FAQ’s

Adding stories I recommend at least posting 5 stories a day. Learn how to do this - it’s fun! Your stories can be about - free appointments, before/after results, reviews, service discounts, or products on sale. It can be anything that you wish to share with your clients and anything useful for them to know. Say you discover a delicious ice cream parlor - tell your clients! Let them know you care about them!

5

Post photos and videos Post once to max three a day – think quality of posts over quantity, less is more. Your posts should be diverse and present different themes. A content plan can help you with this. I really don’t like those pages where you can see only photos of EYES. My husband says it looks a little creepy. Your account will look better if you post pictures of your beautiful clients with your lashes, before/after results, your personal photos, the workplace, but please, not just of eyes.

SUNDAY

MONDAY

When you post a portrait of your client visitors will notice the lashes and how they fit. You will get a lot of likes. When you caption the photo, think about your audience and those who will be looking at the post. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING: BEAUTIFUL PICTURES

6

Create a new business account or convert your personal account into a business account. A business account provides you with more tools to manage and grow your brand on Instagram.

7

Make a content plan. Or, you can use my example template for your first month! What else works well? Activity

 Labeling the lash lengths in a post (viewers will save them)  Asking questions – engaging viewers and having a lot of comments will make your posts more popular  Doing live videos  Using IGTV

However, I am so glad that it has transpired to be a successful first try because we received a lot fantastic entry photos.

Silva says: the idea was to create something different, new and unusual. I checked and nobody else was doing this type of competition. I wished to create an event where shy, lack confident participants could enter, push Lash artists from their comfort zone.

Thank you to everyone who believed and participated. Congratulations to our winners! A massive thank you should be extended to the judges and sponsors; without your help this competition would not have been the success it turned out to be. I hope it will grow to even bigger competitions.

Whe`are Bad, Let’s Pull Together To Do Something Good

T

raining Solutions Group, Salon System Appointed Training Provider are urging members during this period of uncertainty to undertake the MASCED (Melanoma and Skin Cancer Early Detection) accreditation programme. Recognised training endorsed by BABTAC, HABIA and NHBF - worth 2 CPD points, this online training programme, developed by national skin cancer charity SKCIN, provides hair and beauty industry professionals with the tools and resources to learn how to spot the early signs of skin cancer and confidently signpost clients to seek appropriate action.

Knowledge is Power and Training Solutions Group are working with SKCIN to harness the power of hair and beauty industry professionals nationwide, by TRAINING EYES TO SAVE LIVES and in recognising the value we add to the communities in which we operate.

As hair and beauty professionals, we see our clients on a regular basis and are therefore perfectly placed to observe changes that may occur on their skin, particularly in areas they can’t see themselves. This puts us an invaluable position. By taking the time to learn how to identify suspicious lesions, we can detect the early signs of skin cancer and advise our client(s) to take action. This could prevent our clients from disfigurement through surgery and in the case of spotting melanoma early, we could even prevent their death!

With over 10,000 registered professionals across the UK and thousands of 5 star reviews, please take the opportunity during these uncertain times to enhance your knowledge to benefit not only your clients, but your family, friends and of course, yourselves :)

Here’s a perfect example - from self-employed beauty therapist, Erika Hodgkiss: “I’ve referred 8 clients to their GP / dermatologist since completing your course. 5 were skin cancers. Mainly Melanomas. They wouldn’t have gone if I hadn’t encouraged them to go. All have been so grateful. They were on the chest area, the back and a leg. Your course has saved their lives”.

Reviewed and supported by professional dermatologists, the MASCED online training programme takes around 2 hours, it can be done in your own time, on any device and you will receive quality printed resources to assist you.

Please join the MASCED community and register at: MASCED.UK The course costs £20 and Training Solutions Group students can take advantage of a 10% discount using the following voucher code: TRAININGSOLCON2020 All money derived from the training is ploughed back into the charity to support their work. Lash Options & DIY Manniquin Head by Rebecca Perkins

We are in the midst of a very difficult time for self-employed lash artists and many of us are worried about our livelihoods.

M

y name is Rebecca Perkins and I own Icons Lash and Brow Studio in East Sussex. Founded in 2011 and home to 5 lash artists and Posey the Pug! To look on the bright side, quarantine has gifted us all a great chance to work ON rather than IN our businesses. Although this will help generate future income- what about now?! I’ve worked out a way that every Lash Artist can make £290 right now with under £20 Initial investment. (It does require hours of time and concentration of course!) A few years ago, I made some custom lashes for a few clients who had become allergic to the eyelash extension process. They didn’t want offthe shelf strip lashes; they wanted the extensions they knew and loved wearing. So, I had the idea of making ‘bespoke strip lashes for them!’ I literally applied their current lash maps onto the strips used for practice, for them to apply with standard strip lash glue at home. When we were all asked to close, I thought to

16 Lashes

myself, what if I could offer ‘Takeaway infills’ to my clients?! Little pieces of their usual lash set that they could stick on to cover gaps?! After seeing Marina Litvinova @ lovelasheslimerick also doing similar for her clients, it confirmed to me that this was a good idea! Then I remembered that a number of my customers had lash extensions in the first place because they didn’t like strip lash adhesive, so I started to think ‘what if I could create my own magnetic lashes to be used with magnetic eyeliner?! I asked my customers and they were much keener on this idea and were prepared to source and invest in the eyeliner themselves. I contacted a magnet specialist, Nigel from Magnets for you, who helped me choose an appropriate magnet strip for this purpose. Neither of us were sure it was going to work, so I was chuffed to bits that it did! Below is a list of all the equipment you will need as-well as step-by/step instructions and

photographs. You can also offer ‘full-sets’ which aren’t cut up. We are charging our lowest infill prices for both- which in our case is £25 for classic and £30 for Russian Volume. Clients can choose whether to have a ‘fullset’ (not cut into sections) or ‘infills’ (cut into 4 sections.) And whether too have glue-on or magnetic. In 7 days, I’ve had 10 orders which amounts to £290. Of course people could purchase standard strip lashes, but we are all craving normality at the moment, which means they would rather wear the lash style they usually have- the one you hand-make for them! I found making these straight on the strip tricky without my mannequin- which was at the studio. And with money being tight at the moment, I decided to make a DIY one! The instructions for which are included first, so you have something to work on whilst creating your bespoke step lash creations!

DIY LASH MANNEQUIN. What you will need:  A plain mask. (I bought a set of 5 on amazon for £6.)  2 x table tennis balls.  Any pencil.  Glue gun/alternative strong glue.  Old tea towel/hand towel.  Couch roll/Kitchen roll.  One Large book.  Sellotape.

Step 1 Turn the mask over and hold the table tennis ball up to the cut out designed for the right eye. Step 2 Using the pencil, draw 2 guide marks, one at the top in the middle and one at the bottom in the middle. Place the table tennis ball down and repeat steps 1 and 2 to create the left ‘eye’. Step 3 Pick up the one of the balls and using a glue gun, apply glue 1cm wide to the outer side of your pencil marks and stick to one of the eye holes of the mask. (It can be tricky to line up the pencil

marks, but don’t worry- you can pick off any Excess glue when it’s dried!). Hold for 30-60 seconds. Repeat on the other side. Step 4 Roll up the towel/tea towel and use it to ‘pad out’ the hollow of the mask. Step 5 Cover a large book with couch roll or kitchen roll. Step 6 Pull the elastic (designed to go around the wearers head) to the side and Sellotape to the couch roll/kitchen roll.

TAKEAWAY INFILLS/FULL SETS. What you will need:  Practice lash strips. (Available from most Eyelash Extension suppliers).  Relevant classic/volume lashes.  Eyelash Extension Adhesive.  Speed Up Solution/Water.  Microporous tape.  Scissors. (Clients will need to purchase a magnetic eyeliner, or you can buy to retail to them. Available from most online beauty supply stores.) Magnetic strip. Mine is from first4magnets. com. 0845 519 4701. (Nathan from the customer services team is extremely helpful.) Favourite Application/isolation tweezers plus a pair of graveyard tweezers. Step 1

Attach practice strip lashes onto your silicon or DIY mannequin head.

Step 2 Place some micropore tape underneath the lashes and draw your clients usual

18 Lashes

lash map into it. Step 3 Apply some Speed Up solution onto the relevant lash extensions you are going to use. (Or water if you don’t have any). Plastic-plastic can be hard to bond and this makes it easier.) Step 4 Get lashing! After you are finished, wait 2 hours. Step 5 If your client wants an ‘infill’ cut into 4 equal sections for them to apply as needed. If they want a ‘full-set’ miss this step out. Step 6 If they want the glue-on version, you’re good to go! If they want the magnetic version, carry on to steps 7+. Step 7 Cut your magnetic tape into a strip that’s approximately 1mm wide and 5cm long. Stick the darker black side of the magnetic strip at the base of the outer corner of the bespoke strip lashes. Use cyanoacrylate eyelash extension glue applied with a cocktail stick. (The tape should be stuck about 2mm onto the band.) Hold for 30-60 seconds until dry. Use your graveyard tweezers to secure and straighten the magnetic.

Step 8 Cut the magnetic strip off as close to the end of the lash strip as possible. Step 9 Repeat on the outer corner of the matching strip and on both inner corners. Step 10 Cut what remains of the 1mm magnetic strip into 6 x 1mm Pieces and stick 3 in the middle of the left-hand strip and 3 in the middle of the right-hand strip using your graveyard tweezers. I’m not going to pretend- this part is extremely fiddley! I wouldn’t count on anyone who isn’t either a lash artist or a surgeon to be able to pull it off! (Remember, the dark black side is the non-magnetic side, so this is the side that the glue should be applied too.) Step 11 Leave for at least 2 hours to dry and then they are ready to post out to your clients who I’m sure will be happy to receive them! Let me know how you got on! Would love to see your creations! 5 Things to Consider Before Reopening by Emily Lee

I’ve been teaching infection prevention and control (IPAC) for the Lash Industry for several years, and though my higher-than-the-average-bear standards have been making some headway in lash salons globally, it was still a bit of an up-stream swim at times. If someone would have told me in 2019 that a global event in 2020 would result in throngs of people suddenly contacting me to help them up their IPAC game, I would have thought I was being Punk’d. I am, however, so happy to find this silver lining in the dark pandemic cloud. As our industry gears up to reopen our doors to clients, here are five things to consider before reopening.

1

Your Health Are you in good general health? Are you high risk or live with someone who is? If you are not a low risk individual, or are very concerned about reopening, you may want to think about delaying your reopening until things stabilize a bit. Just because you are allowed to reopen, it doesn’t mean you have to right away if you don’t feel ready. As always, you, your staff, colleagues and clients should stay home if you are experiencing any symptoms of illness.

2

Your Space If you rent or work at a salon, are there individual rooms, or is it an open concept? Is there enough space to create enough distance between lash tables so that your clients, colleagues, and staff can still be at least 2 metres away from each other at any given time? Do you have an abundance of non-essential items in your space, like fluffy pillows, rugs, magazines, brochures, and other decorative items that are

22 Lashes

difficult or impossible to disinfect? Now is the time to declutter such items before reopening. Your furniture should be made of a non-porous, easy to spray and wipe-down material.

3

Your Existing Protocols Now is a great time to look over your current infection prevention and control protocols. Do you already routinely wear a mask? How about gloves? Are you disinfecting your tools in the appropriate level of disinfectant depending on what it is used for? Do you use the same tile of lashes for multiple clients, or do you dispense only what is needed for each client? If you are already operating at the highest standard protocol, then there are not very many changes you’ll need to make to your existing procedures, because you are already operating with routine practices. If you have not been taught the highest standard of protocols, or if your routine needs an update, there are courses you can take to brush up and set yourself

apart from your competitors, not to mention better protect yourself and your clients. As the saying goes, “you don’t know what you don’t know”. Here’s where I shamelessly plug my infection prevention and control digital course. Email BeautyProMedia@gmail.com for details. As a rule, always check with your local health authority’s guidelines and either meet or exceed them.

4

Your Potential Temporary Protocols As I am writing this article, only a few states and provinces have started to reopen, and since eyelash extensions are such a close contact service, here are some extra precautions to consider putting in place before reopening, in addition to your impeccable and updated IPAC protocols (some may become required by your health authority in order to reopen): a. Booking clients with ample time in between to perform a thorough and complete

disinfection of all tools, equipment, furniture, and surfaces. b. Operating by appointment only – no walk ins. c. Removing all non-essential décor. d. Spacing out your work stations at least 2 metres apart. e. Restricting extra guests from coming with your scheduled client. f. Disassembling your waiting room, or rearranging seats to follow social distancing rules. g. Decommissioning tester units and discourage excessive touching of retail products. h. Having your client wait in their vehicle until you text/call/indicate that it is safe to approach the building to lessen the chance of meeting other clients. i. Having all your clients and staff wash then sanitize hands immediately upon entering the premises. j. Refraining from hugging or shaking hands with your clients. k. Installing a plexiglass barrier at your reception area between the receptionist and clients. l. Providing a mask for clients to wear during their visit to your premises. m. Providing disposable shoe covers or slippers. n. Having all clients/staff fill out and sign an extra health questionnaire asking about cold/ flu symptoms, out of country travel, and

exposure to someone with symptoms. o. Scanning body temperature of all clients and staff. (some places require this, and some places don’t allow it unless you are a health professional) p. Keeping a log sheet with name, contact information, date and time in/out for anyone entering your establishment in case of outbreak. q. Decommissioning any food or drink dispensers and offering sealed, individual bottles/packages instead. r. Wearing a plastic shield while servicing clients. s. Wearing an apron or smock that is either disposable and changed between clients, or reusable, and laundered between clients. t. Using hair nets for clients and enforcing all staff ’s hair be tied back and out of the way. u. Contactless payments. v. Virtual staff meetings.

5

Your Pricing As you can see, there are quite a few new items you may need to purchase before reopening. Some are currently hard to find, as well as hard to find at their regular, non-inflated prices. Most of you haven’t been working at all during lockdown but have had no relief from your commercial rent and utility payments. You will be booking longer appointments to ensure ample disinfection time, probably operating at only 50% occupancy to

allow for safe distancing, as well as providing PPE to your clients. Now might be a great time to recalculate your cost of service and raise your prices accordingly. As mentioned earlier, we are still in the beginning of reopening our industry globally, and so this list is a suggestion and educated guess, compiled from researching other countries’ reopening protocols. Always research to meet or exceed your local government or health authority’s requirements. Remember that the health and safety of you, your staff, and your clients should always be of utmost priority, for health is wealth. Stay safe, healthy and awesome! Past life to Present

How I ventured into Beauty by Britta Krueger

For some people it is clear from a very young age what they want to do with their life and they have a clear vision of their dream job and follow that path all the way, others get to it with some detours!

I

am one of those who knew what I wanted to do but now looking back, I ended up with my dream job through a set of challenges and detours which got me to where I am now. I loved languages and definitely wanted to work with them so studying languages was the obvious first step and with my love for travelling it was only natural that I started working in Export which was immensely interesting! Over the years I have worked for different companies in various industries and it has given me a whole range of opportunities to evolve and expand my knowledge and skill throughout various departments including financial controlling, Import, Marketing and of course the position as a sales manager – all of which I really enjoyed! I loved the challenge of a difficult position or having to rescue a situation with the added pressure of last minute hiccups (nothing more challenging than organising a trade show within 3 weeks because someone handed their notice in without organising it!) while at the same time project managing the global launch of a new product line. Working with a team to make it happen against all odds to then see the success unfold is such a buzz and more than rewarding for all the hard work and long hours. Little did I know that life had an even bigger

challenge for me….without much of a warning I got the diagnose that no one wants to hear….. the dreaded C word…and unless you have been in that situation you have no idea how much this turns your life upside down and into an emotional rollercoaster that makes you question everything and forces you to see your life in a different light! Your view changes, your plans, dreams and hopes all get a different perspective and it was an opportunity to revalue and assess everything and as a result a fresh start for me. It was time for a change so I handed my notice in and started making plans. Through my previous positions in the Health & Beauty industry I was able to use my experience and knowledge and put the plan into action (sitting at home wasn’t my idea of fun anyway) and that is how it all started! I am not going to lie and say that it was all plain sailing….anyone who is running their own business knows that there is a lot more to it than meets the eye but in all honesty I have never regretted this step no matter how hard it has been or how much blood, sweat and tears it has cost me over the years. Starting with our first spray tan brand we then developed many of the ranges which are still available through flirties today.

Looking back, it was maybe all meant to happen in order to get me to where I am now. I got the all clear a few years later, the business is booming and I am still as passionate about it as I was when I first set out on this journey. Even though things were not as straight forward and I had to take a few detours along the way, I feel grateful for what I have achieved and how my life has turned out. Products, techniques, teamwork and the hustle and bustle of a busy business are all part of it as much as having to constantly evolve and move forward, pause or even take a step back, then revalue, assess, adjust or amend in order to move forward to the right direction. Those who know me also know that I normally keep my private life separate and behind closed doors but I feel that this little insight into my story and how I started my journey with flirties could be an encouragement for those who get disheartened or frustrated. Those who feel there is no way forward or that they will never be able to make their dream come true……don’t give up! Sometimes you have to change direction to get what you really want. Life isn’t about straight lines…. there is always detours, compromises, challenges and things to adapt to but that makes it even more rewarding when you can make your dreams come true!

The Social Power of an Email List Email marketing is one of the most powerful and essential forms of internet marketing available.

S

ome people believed that it’s ‘old school’ and there are better forms of marketing. However slowly, it is being recognized again for the great marketing tool it is. As more and more bloggers and Influencers shout about the power of email marketing. But while it’s true that more people are waking up to the potential of list building, it’s also true that many of those same people are failing to make full use of its potential. That’s because they don’t recognize that email is not just a means for you to communicate with an audience, but also a means for them to communicate with you AND with each other! A Quick Example of the Social Power of Email Most email marketing broadcasts are written as newsletters. These are info dumps not intended to elicit a response.

30 Business

But what if you invite your readers to respond? What if you say they can get in touch if they have any questions and then actually answer the emails they send back?

you could get an idea of the kinds of things people want to see from you, such that your next product or service launch will almost be a guaranteed hit!

Suddenly, you are now having direct conversations with the people who love your brand and who want to hear more from you – which is an ideal way to build trust and authority. If someone feels like they know you, then they will be much more likely to buy from you – especially as they know they can get in touch if they ever have a problem.

Sharing Posts

Better yet, is that this casual conversation could easily lead to a sale of a bigger ticket item. If you are a coach for instance, then this conversation could lead to someone signing up!

Of course, this will only work if the content you provide is high enough quality, and if people think others they know will enjoy it too. This is a good incentive then to keep putting out your very best work!

You can even use a survey conducted via email in order to carry out market research. This way,

Finally, why not ask people to share your content if they enjoyed it? People forget how easy it is forward on an email. If you include a call to action at the bottom of your message inviting people to sign up, then those new readers could very easily become new subscribers!

The B.U.I.L.D From Business Coach Post-Covid 19 Lockdown - Business Plan by Louise Tierney

It’s not a time to panic, it’s a time to plan. What to do now and how to plan for the new future. Introduction: “Winter is coming.” And it will be a long Winter. I wrote this guide in the first week of Lock down in the UK. It covers what you should be doing for your business in the lockdown time and also after to BUILD the new version of your business. With the Corona virus a worldwide pandemic, if you’re leading any small business, you will be asking yourself “how will I survive this?” Social isolation and an international emergency have had an immediate impact

on almost all industries and especially those that cluster people; conferences, trade shows, airlines/cruise ships and all types of travel, the hospitality industry, sporting events, theatre and cinema, restaurants and schools.

on our economy, as each industry that gets impacted puts people out of work, and those laid off workers in result would be out of money to spend on products and services. The immediate future is not looking at all good.

Large and small companies are sending employees to work at home. Large and small retailers are shutting down their stores. Either by government suggestion or government enforcement.

The impact of this virus could very likely change how we shop, travel and work for years if not indefinitely. Times are changing and we all need to adapt very quickly.

The situation for small businesses is far worse than larger businesses. Small businesses have fewer cash reserves and less margin of error for managing sudden downturns. The overall effect of of these closures will have a major impact

If you’re running a small business your priorities will have been keeping your family, employees and customers safe. Now you are probably at the stage of ‘How can my business survive?’

Business 31

The World Will Never be the Same

Last time around, some household brands seen a double-digit sales growth, while a similar product with a pricier option declined significantly. For small businesses, there’s a lesson there.

If you believe this is a short-term problem you might want to hang fire and wait to see what transpires. Maybe you have the type of business that will thrive in this time, maybe you sell cleaning products, face masks or hand sanitiser.

The lesson is that now is the time to diversify product lines to include options at multiple price segments so there is something for everyone who fall under different levels of income.

If you believe it’s a long-term problem you probably require a new business model.

Examine the latest retail trends to see what kinds of items are in demand, and expand into those areas wherever possible. Make sure to

What does my business model look like now? Since the world today is no longer the same as it was a month ago, and likely will be worse a month from now, if your business model today looks the same as it did at the beginning of the month, you’re in denial -- and possibly out of business or will be very soon. Sorry for the harsh reality, but there is something you can do now! Here are the core areas we are going to BUILD again and start anew if need be. B Build Assets & Your List U Unsubscribe / Cut costs I Ideas L Leverage

Does your product or service have some benefits if delivered that way?

focus on items that are necessities rather than luxuries. Luxuries can still work, however small everyday luxuries, like an high end lipstick. Luxury but affordable. You don’t need to ignore luxuries all together but make them a smaller proportion of your brands offering not the main focus.

How long will this last?

It’s the nature of an entrepreneur to be optimistic, you can still stay optimistic however now it’s time to get super real about everything that is happening.

Diversify product lines One of the takeaways from the last recession is that not all products are created equal. Once consumers start to feel the pinch, they will cut spending in a variety of areas until economic conditions improve.

32 Business

If not, can you find something more suitable to offer? Or is it possible to pivot to something else you have spotted a market for? I have a business in the Eyelash Industry. Today many insurance providers started offering insurance to students completing 100% online beginner courses, providing those courses are accredited by the company I founded Lash Inc. www.lashinc.com This is a massive change in the industry. This is a massive opportunity to existing educations to switch more of what they so to online training. It is a whole different market and now their customer base can be worldwide!

You might be in a situation where you can work from home and still serve your customers’ needs in some capacity. However you might not be able to offer the service or product to the

If you can operate in some capacity, great. But even if you can, you might still need to Diversify your business and offer something different to what you normally do in order to survive and sustain.

Can your product or service be sold, delivered, or produced online? Online for many industries is moved from the future to the present and it is a change that wont revert.

D Diversify / Pivot

customer due to lock downs / restrictions.

Short Term: In the short term, explore if your business model can be oriented around the new rules of social isolation.

You also need to ask yourself, “Is this a threemonth problem, a one-year problem, or a threeyear problem, a five-year problem? Are the shutdowns of businesses going to be a temporary blip in the economy or will they drive the U.S., Europe and the rest of the world into a long recession? I think we know the answer that a global recession is inevitable. At this point you need to figure out what minimal things you need to keep your company alive and what to leave behind. You need to do all of these … cut costs, diversify and build assets simultaneously.

“Opportunity is always there for the taking or creating.” – Louise Tierney

Come together with your competitors. If your industry is hit particularly hard by the impact of coronavirus, this is not the time to double down crushing your competition. It’s time to come together with your competitors and complementary companies and brainstorm ways everyone can get creative during this unprecedented time. “People who may not have been as open in the past will be far more likely to explore options and partnerships than they were in the past,”

Aim to work with competitors bigger than you to leverage their customer list or followers. You can look for several things from partnerships 1) Growing your list for mutual benefit. 2) Sell a service/packaged product for mutual benefit. 3) Possibly reduce your usual minimum order requirements by buying together from the same manufacturer. There are many other ways you can work with business partners and you will know what is best for your business. Mutual Benefit is key here. As it needs to be equally beneficial to the other party or even more beneficial for them. If not, they are not going to partner with you. Q1 which competitor has large mailing list / customer base? Q2 from this list, who would you consider approaching to partner-up with on a Joint Venture / Project?

Tell customers how they can spend money with you. You may be able to adapt / diversify your business and still bring in revenue. This could be offering virtual events, shifting from in-store/ walk-in sales to online only, or local delivery of your goods. Say you still training, you might start to sell lower priced training online on a subscription model rather than higher priced courses, in person on a single transaction. An example of how I implemented this is a usual course offered by one of my companies’ retails at £350, I kept the price the same but split it into payment over 30 weeks to allow people to learn as they earn. Another product I started to offer was a low cost £1 mini-course on a subscription model, resulted in over 600 sold in 1 day and by day 2 my business rent, mortgage and all household expenses were paid for a month. The £1 course is weekly and if all subscribers keep the subscription, I have my most basic expenses covered for the duration of the 20 weeks’ worth of courses. What can you do to diversify your product line or services of your business? Make sure everyone knows about what you are offering now. Otherwise people will assume you are not doing anything which can be purchased from you. Start with your biggest

customers first, and reach out to them directly. You can also leverage social media and email newsletters to communicate. Make sure people know how they can support your business by telling them what you do and how they can get it.

As a general rule, consider increasing marketing expenditure up to 12% if you’re in a crowded market. In such cases, it pays to invest as much of your revenue on marketing as the business can sustain.

If shifting your business to online sales isn’t possible, begin publicising specials and promotions for when things stabilise later. Focus on your future customers now. “This is an opportunity for you to get the word out that you will have a post-corona special price or you will be open for business whenever your customers need you”. If you are going to be working on future customers, then work on building your newsletter subscriber list.

Marketing expenditures pay for themselves more when used wisely. If you simply do not have the money to spend, you will need to invest more of your time to grow your customer base, and as previously stated Joint-Ventures (JV) / Partnerships can help.

If you don’t have one, NOW is the time to start building one. Give a money off coupon or another incentive in return for customers to join your mailing list. Gather contact details as if your life depended on it, your business life might actually depend on it.

Unsubscribe & Remove non-essential costs. Spending on experimental marketing tactics, non-essential subscriptions, or any luxuries should also go on pause or be cancelled for the short term.

Recently one of my companies Lash Inc did a JV with Barbicide, through offering their free course and promoting it on the @lashinc Instagram account we generated over 2000 new subscribers to our mailing list in 3 days. Q1 What percentage of my revenue should I spend on marketing? Q2 How can I grow my list with little or low cost? In conclusion, times are going to be hard for most people. But there are steps we can take right now to help and ensure your business will survive this major event.

In summary: BUILD B Build Assets & Your List

Try to negotiate a rent break or reduction and lease reductions.

U Unsubscribe / Cut costs

Make it a point to know exactly what help you can get from the government and what you are entitled to claim. Make sure you claim, everything will help.

L Leverage Relationships & Competitiors

Q1 What non-essential costs can I remove from my business? Q2 What help can I claim to help my business / myself personally? Although it may seem obvious, the best way for a small business to survive a recession is to have as large a customer base as possible. Making that happen requires money, so the time to do it is before a recession hits hard. That means you must plan to increase marketing expenditure now to grow sales in advance of a downturn. The U.S. Small Business Administration advises small businesses to spend between 7% and 8% of gross revenue on marketing. That figure, however, isn’t enough when there are economic headwinds coming.

I Idea Generation & Planning

Social Media Guru Our cover image this issue is of David Michigan. He is a fitness trainer, motivational speaker, model, actor and social media influencer.

H

e has more than 10 million people following him on social media, and 150,000 have subscribed to his academy: the Michigan Academy.

For Lash Inc we were interested in increasing our reach on Social Media and found out about David while searching for ways to increase our following on Instagram beyond 50K.

He has mastered so many things in his personal and professional career and wants to share what he has Mastered with the world.

His tips certainly helped us top our 50K. His bite sized video makes everything easy to follow and implement.

Did you ever wonder why we have 2 circles when we post to our stories on Instagram? Well that is due to one of David’s tips. Having 2 circles makes you stand out from other stories and many people will spot it and click on your story before anyone else. Shhhhh, don’t tell anyone.

Getting to know David: We know you are satisfied with your success so far. But are you also happy in general? I have always been happy in life, even without any so called success. I think the real key to be happy is self confidence. When you truly listen to your own voice, you don’t listen anyone’s judgement, and above all, you understand that happiness comes from the inside and not from external events. How sad would it be, if your happiness would depend on external factors ? If you don’t have much confidence in yourself, and if you value too much other people’s opinions, remember that in reality everyone thinks about themself in priority. They don’t really care about you. So why not deciding to live the life you truly want and deserve.

So, if you are into getting the perfect body, David is your guy. Into Mindfulness and Meditation? check him out. Or just want to admire his modelling photos then that is allowed also, there are many on his Instagram @davidmichigan

What is the first thing you think about in the morning when you wake up? Is there a morning routine? The first thing I do when I wake up is thinking about my long term vision, it gives me a lot of energy to wake up early and to take action. Here is my morning routine: I do a 5 min self-hypnosis session, then I write my goals for the day, the things I really want to be done. And then I drink some coffee, without eating anything. As I usually train during the morning, I love to do the intermittent fasting, and to eat only after sport, as a recompense. You travel half the world. What does travelling and foreign cultures mean to you and what is your favourite place?

For us and maybe for you Instagram Marketing is what we wanted to learn from David. David’s first Instagram course is currently $29, which is a fraction of what we paid for it, so an absolute bargain!

My goal when I am traveling is to give very strong emotions to people. I want you to travel with me, even if you are staying home. In order to do that, we make amazing cinematographic videos with my friend Jim Winter (movie maker), and with the landscapes, music… we want to give you the most amazing experience ever. I really encourage you to watch these videos on my Instagram or YouTube account, because they are really astonishing, especially the short movie (15min) we made for the Embassy of Argentina, with which we won the first place at the drone festival. My 2 favourite places are Argentina and Fakarava (French Polynesia) because you have there very nice people with an unreal biodiversity. It is so crazy, and I encourage everyone to go in these 2 places of the world.
