Transition

From graphics to products. Though I was educated more like a graphic designer in high school, unlike my other classmates, I chose to study industrial design in the university because I’ve sensed my interests and aspiration by reading several books about product design. And I intensely believed that all I had learned can be used in the industrial design as well.

University

Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish. The more I know about industrial design, the more I love about it. I not only poured all my passion and mind on every project, but also took many other subjects such as: Illustration Photography Packaging design Book binding Language courses (English) Also self-taught some media program skills, 3D Animation and video clips from the internet privately due to my fond of visual art and design. And this really improved my graphic level. Some people When my classmates asked me: Don’t you ever feel tired working so hard like this? I think I do feel tired, but in a happy good way. Because I LOVE all the learning from my heart and that is the reason why I can be so enthusiastic. Taking extra courses from other departments not only made me a more competent student than others, but also have gave me the opportunity making friends in other design fields. All these became my inspirations, and can be used in my projects.

Internship

Work to learn, learn to work. I have had two internships. One was the third summer break in the university, and I stayed in an Argentine couple’s place who also worked as designer with me in the design department. The second one was the summer break of my first year of graduate school. All my colleagues were foreigners, and I could only use English to communicate with them. These two internships really gave me the chance to learn in actual operations that surrounded by designers who know much more than any of my classmates, which was exactly what I wished for when I applied. I did know myself better, catching on the difference between lectures in school and actual design industry. I also made a self-examination to adjusted my attitude and direction.

12

Competition

The reasons to attend design competitions. What I’ve got from competitions? Rewards I started to pay all my tuition fee, rent, and living expenses by those rewards since I was 19. Later on, I could not only afforded my life, but also had leisure money to get better appliances, such as a fine camera, which can take better shots for my design pieces, or a more efficient laptop.

Enhancing my skills I challenged different types of topic every time in order to practice every skill in the product design presses. Also it is a good thinking, communicating, and teamwork training.

The ability of appreciation Recognizing advantages and disadvantages from others’ works or presentations, appreciated them because both the good ones and the bad ones can all be my teacher.

Self-expression and Speech A good designer must know how to express him/herself. Thanks to the competition, and my rewarded experiences, I often have to make a speech or presentation in front of strangers. No matter it is for a final or a sharing symposium, I am capable to make a great one now.

New Friends, New social connections Making friends in different design fields is another advantage of participating design contexts. People from different backgrounds and schools are like different books. Making new friends is like reading a brand new book. We can learn from each other and also can help each other when needed.

To be noticed Design competition is the easiest plate form to be seen and noticed for students, who have no backgrounds and sources. The wining pieces can also go public by the media, and that’s how I can promote my design, and promote myself at the same time.I hope my work can be seen by the world, the more the better.

The opportunity to be in mass production One of my design works, called “Nest”, was signed by a leading U.S. design brand called "Fred & Friends", and will be produced by them as well. Also "Nest" will be my very first mass-productive design, and will be in the market all over the world soon or later. I hope I can have more opportunities like this from now on, to really have my products in the market and also can adjust my view at the same time. I built a personal web site in the beginning of 2011, looking forward to be noticed more in the future. And most importantly, I will fight for the chance to learn in CCS for a year by the scholarship from the government, in order to expend my vision, knowing more cultures and people around the world, striving for more exhibition and internships opportunities. That’s how I going to steel myself and starts to shine in the world.

13

Opportunities for Internship One of my internship was got in a competition, which was part of the prize that competitors can get if they won. My team won the Bronze Medal by “Braille Beginner”, which was a design that can help blind children learn the braille by sounds and the sense of touch, and we got two offers at the same time. I choose “Mitac”, a company mainly produces GPS in the end, because the director told me that I will be in a team with 2 foreign designers, who came from British and French. And they will lead me in the project for the next one month. I considered this as an opportunity to advance my English ability, and also the chance to know more about other cultures. Furthermore, 1 month was too short to learn for me, so I asked if I can intern for 2 months. The director gave me a yes with joy, and was surprised about my enthusiastic.

Good and fair credit I consider competition as a fair way that you can actually prove yourself without any external condition, because the judges know nothing about the competitors, they can only determine by the design itself. I appreciated and cherish all the positive effects those rewards gave me.

Design

What do I think about design Design is a game that never bored me, a challenge always full of joy, is the way I can improve the life of me and my family, is the way I get to know the world, and also is the way I can make the world different.Just like an everlasting lesson, design is the one I decided to learn about in my entire life.

Topic I choose I love challenging different aspects and materials, which you can totally noticed from my design works. In the beginning, I felt frustrated when dealing with projects that I was not familiar with. But once I got it deeper, I finally knew that working with those I didn’t know before is much more interesting. Just like a game that never bored me.

1. Green, Eco Reflecting how modern technology damaged our environment and ecosystem. Showing the ethics and social responsibility designers should have.

2. Emotion, Culture Designs that can touch people’s heart, create a warm and sweet atmosphere.

3. Human care, Education Discover some unrevealed needs or problems in our life. To make the substance and human connected better. Improving human life, also design for some disadvantaged groups.

14

Capable to work alone and good at teamwork Some of my design I worked alone, and others with partners. I have no druthers and often do them both at the same time. In this case, I become independent but also have great teamwork ability, which always make our team work smoothly and creatively.

Why me?

There are four competitors who all want to apply CCS this time, we all come from the same graduate school, National Taiwan University of Science & Technology. But I consider myself the BEST of all. Here are my advantages: 1. Definitely the most active learner 2. Produced the best quality works 3. Designed with the most different perspectives 4. Interned more than others 5. With the best point of views and skills 6. Won the most rewards of all 7. The most media exposure one 8. Have the best grades 9. The most expected student 10. The youngest Distinguished Alumni Award ever in both National Yunlin University of Sciense & Technology and Yi Ming Senior High School. I believe I have more merits, and I would love to show and explore my potential in CCS.

I always told myself to THINK BIG, to WORK HARD, and NEVER GIVE UP. I also believe I have no limit, even if I have one, I’ll smash it.

THE FIRST TRAFFIC LIGHT This photo is the world's first traffic light, located in London in 1868 and since then has been the traffic lights are red, yellow, green, 3 light. In Taiwan, about 3.6 million square kilometers of land, people and vehicles to run the whole traffic depend on about 700,000 traffic lights.

20

THREE MAIN TRENDS OF GLOBAL LIGHTING MARKET For the traffic lights device, the light bulbs is very important, and here we show the evolution of the world's three major development trends in lighting. Finally, the creator of the market value of Taiwan's lighting industry, has an excellent advanced technology, but must import the product development of technology in order to play its value-effective. (Analyze by Albert Zomer)

LED USING TREND OF DEVELOPMENT From this chart to understand the application of LED trend of the indicator since 1996 has been developing technology is quite mature. According to the survey, LED outdoor lighting applications between 2008 and 2010 maturity, which is one of the advantages we apply. (Source from IBTs analyze)

21

COLOUR-CHANGING LED Use optics mixes the color principle of colour-changing LED, three change for one, color-changing LED replace original LED and incandescent light, reduce the manufacturing cost, energy consumption and pollution caused.

MERIT OF LED Led Traffic light have a lot of advantages, the vision is distinguished to free of sunlight, the response is fast, can save about 85% of the electricity, long effective duration, even damaging several can work continuously.

22

COLOR BLINDNESS & DISPLAY Display mode of the signal can make various possible daltonism and colour weakness can be clearly distinguished. There is only a light, the independence and strong on the vision.

SOLAR POWER To use solar power to substitute for the traditional electric energy, let each traffic light can do energy circulation, grows continually.

23

THE COMPARISON OF GENERATION The incandescent light bulbs, energy-saving light bulbs, LED, solar-powered LED and our concept of "A Traffic Light". The lamp bulb form and quantity of luminous flux, luminous efficiency, lifetime, power consumption on the comparison, we can see that the use of "A Traffic Light "The performance in various aspects are the most effective and most environmentally friendly. TECHNOLOGY-FORM FOLLOW FUNCTION Reflective transmission increase as a function of incident light angle. RPI researchers found that in the silicon surface after Lin's new nano-engineering reflective coating treatment, the material can absorb 96% of the radiation on the surface of the sun, rather than worry about the location of the sun in the sky, in the light absorption of a significant increase in to make solar energy more cost-effective, from this chart to understand the magnitude of efficiency gains. Based on this information, we will shape designed to be rotated 45 degrees square, to increase the number and size of solar panels, as well as exposure point of view to enhance the effectiveness of solar panels. In addition, the gradient has also reduced the impact of outdoor dust, but also so that rainwater can be more easily cleaned surfaces. (Source from Xerocoat)

ENVIRONMENT IMPACT If all of Taiwan's traffic lights changed to "A Traffic Light", then each will be able to save about 10 billion kWh of electricity, equivalent to 7.2 million households use electricity to reduce emissions every year about 70 tons of carbon dioxide, equivalent to planting 37 million trees.(Sourse from Bureau of Energy)

25

ELECTRONIC ENGINEERING To make the model better able to convey the concept, we hope to do 1:2 scale model of the really bright lights and also to be able to transform, so we asked the company's interactive practice professor of electronics designers and how to do and needs to add Share which electronic parts, electronic-shop, after a series of mentors, please help, according to our needs to help us write code, making circuit boards, assembly of electronic components. Measured from the same time then the size of the electronic part of the 3D modified, then the shell part of the outsourcing CNC, designed to remove the back cover, in case no electricity, then the time display to quickly replace the battery.

INSPIRATION & REVIEW The traditional Traffic light always has three lights that are red, yellow, and green, but as times and technology evaluate; now we have the color-changing LED technology. It makes me wonder, maybe the traffic light need no longer to be three lights.

In prototype, we wanted to use the real solar panels and LED, bet we knew just a little about them. So we asked the professor and students in the Electronics Department, and also got some help from the interaction designer of my intern company PEGA at that time.

Because some countries already had traffic lights and other solar energy traffic signals, I was worried that we work too similar when we were in the concept stage. People might think "It is just another one using solar energy as alternative."

Our prototype was scaled model, the solar panels didn’t have the suitable size and were too expensive, also might cost accident when exhibit. In the end, we drop the idea of using the real solar panel, replace it by black Acrylic.

I didn’t want my work to give people such impression, because I wanted to be selected at the first sight among a large number of works in the design competition. We pondered over every features of our work, and listed them all. Using the solar power was only one of them, so we can emphasized other features to take the spot light.

BACKGROUND AND MOTIVE As the disaster occur frequently, solving the question of disaster victims' care and livelihood is government's most important work. But withdrawing the disaster victims from the disaster areas or investing the ready-made commodity in the areas is the futile continually vast project. In the disaster areas waiting for rescue and reconstruction, the disaster victims must pay the physical strength and their lives to trade the firewood, the food and other commodities. Our goal is combining the solar cooker with rescue commodities to become the emergency rescue service commodity combination. It could be transported to the disaster areas or the refugee camps to provide the disaster victims temporary kitchen work equipment and raise their survival probability.

32

TECHNIC The solar energy is the most abundant energy on the Earth. Fully using it could largily decrease people's relying on the electric power and petrochemical energy. In the third world countries, resources are deficient. The environmental groups and associations promote the solar cooker in those areas expecting to use the free solar heat energy well to improve those local people's life.

SOLAR COOKER PRINCIPLE INDICATION Mirror metal paraboloid will inflect the light and heat coming in vertically to the focus, the pots set up on the focus can absorb solar heat continually.

33

PROTOTYPE MAKING We took some data as reference on the internet to build the 3D model. Then imitated the sunlight reflection path by a program called “Light Tool After adjusting through these two programs several times, we got the best camber for sunlight reflection efficiency. In the end we used 2D vector software to dismantle the surface into several curve files, and then cut them out in woods by laser cutting machine. Pasting highly reflected sheet metal after combination, the prototype was completed.

When consumers purchase FOLD in store, it is like a poster which can be rolled up and fixed directly by the PP button. We do not need additional tape to fix it anymore.

TRANSPORT, STORAGE

USAGE

A large stack size is much smaller than the general trash.

Eight vertical fold sides, four swinging fold sides and five overlapping layers make a solid structure. We can unfold and fold repeatedly to clean dead end easily.

BUSINESS

DISCARD

The surface can be printed by all kinds of environmentally friendly printing ink. The design is able to generate a large number of simple models with a low-cost way.

We discarded it like paper which can be cut and fold to reduce the size. The single material benefits recycling.

HOW TO USE In the manufacturing, the surface has completed folding lines. It is easily assembled when the user folded follow the line and fasten buttons.

CHALLENGE Try to make a cradle to cradle design. The product life cycle in each stage is reduced resource waste and environmental pollution. The product is made by a single ECO material to achieve the green design spirit of "Cradle to Cradle". In addition to generating a large number of low-cost models which provide more choices for users. The users could choose different color or pattern one according to preference and usage environment.

54

55

CRADLE TO CRADLE Cradle-to-cradle design is a biomimetic approach to the design of systems. It models human industry on nature's processes in which materials are viewed as nutrients circulating in healthy, safe metabolisms. It suggests that industry must protect and enrich ecosystems and nature's biological metabolism while also maintaining safe, productive technical metabolism for the high-quality use and circulation of organic and synthetic materials. Put simply, it is a holistic economic, industrial and social framework that seeks to create systems that are not just efficient but essentially waste free. The model in its broadest sense is not limited to industrial design and manufacturing; it can be applied to many different aspects of human civilization such as urban environments, buildings, economics and social systems.

56

PROTOTYPE In the design process, folding papers and PP to complete "Square, Round". Finally, I selected the most beautiful one. The one was folded without hinting the user and the structure was the strongest. The structure of prototype was made by PP, and it can hold water without leakage.

HOW TO USE With a magnet, "Nest" attracts some stuff made by metal are like paper clips, pushpins, staples. The behavior is like birds fly around to collect a lot of materials to build different Nest.

72

INSPIRATION In the nature world, it is special about the nesting behavior of animals. In thinking, nesting is associated with protect, nurture and family. The nesting thing is like our life, even our job. The behavior is fascinating. When we research building house of various animals’ habitual behaviors, "bird" is the most direction to "nest ".

EGG SHAPE The shape of egg is a stunning pure form. It is very pure. On the other hand, it looks just an ordinary egg before attracting objects. When using the egg, users’ behavior makes the form of nest under the egg. With the nest, it makes users to sense the usage of this design. For leaving some hints, the design is named Nest.

73

HOW IT WORK The lower part of the egg is magnet. The magnet plays two important roles--- attracting paper clips and making a balance. The egg can be as balanced as the tumbler. When we place it on the desktop, it will rock lovely instead of rolling around. For achieving the goal, the upper portion of egg is hollow. Because of the experiments and attempts, the lower half of egg reaches both good capacity of attracting and balance stability of center. The surface will be like real egg by the texture etching.

74

METAPHOR "Nest" is metaphor of human life by connecting the reality routines to the animal behavior of birds. In the real life, people have to do both working and learning. The purposes of those hard works are for family, friendship, love, or even for survival. For different motivation, reasons and purposes, it appears that each of us is like a bird in the nest. Everyone is pregnant with the eggs that have not hatched, and looking forward to the future. "Nest" is an emotional design by metaphor, connecting the natural behavior of birds to the real-life of human beings. It is shaped as an egg. The form of the egg will be changed by users’ behavior, which can provide the users with positive emotional feelings, such as Warm, Sweet, Cute, and Lovely.

PRODUCTION "Nest" was signed by a leading U.S. design brand called "Fred & Friends", and will be produced by them as well. It is now in the stage of confirming the final mold, color planning, and packaging design. Also "Nest" will be my very first mass-productive design, and will be in the market all over the world by "Fred & Friends"

BACKGROUND When I discovered that I rarely worked on furniture design, but always wanted to, “Heart-touching Furniture became my topic at once. I wanted to develop those childhood memories and imaginations into design work, recalling all those sweet and innocent feelings people lost when we all grow up. Hopefully, we can all find our Peter Pan and Never Land on Daydreamer.

78

IDEA SOURCE

IDEA STORMING

At first, in order to get more information about what people can still identify with and recall right now. I started by talking with many people in different ages and occupations, discussing about special impressions of their childhood. And then develop all my creative ideas horizontally.

In the first phase, I picked eight concepts and draw some simple sketches. Then I discussed with my classmates and professors.

CONCEPT 1 - DAYDREAMER Dream to fly above the clouds, or actually own one. You can make one and another pipe dream on it. The Daydreamer covered by a spherical fluffy cotton pillow with structures. Like a changeable cloud changes its shape, to give you the most comfortable way. The base and the seat create a short distance from the floor, which can produce a floating illusion.

CONCEPT 2 - PAGE.10 We read. And sometimes we jump into the world of books. It is a piece of high density foam inside, can flip like a real book sheet, and it is also the part where you can sit high or low, sit up, or lie on it. The flipping pages not only change the outlook of the chair, but also your attitude and posture.

CONCEPT 3 - CUBE SUGAR This is a concept from sugar. Sugar-loving child always put one or more cube sugar into their mouth without adults’ attention. While the sugar melting between teeth and tongue, it feels like covering by the sweet feelings head to toe. This chair construct by a light foam material, covered with soft cushions on its seat and back. Using flexible pearl white coated Lycra to cover the whole appearance. So that it’ll look like a real, but huge, sugar cube in the end. When the user sits, the weight will pall the Lycra and changes the shape of the cube, which will become more like “a chair”. The movement of it is just like the melting possess sugar cube has in our mouth.

79

CONCEPT 4 - PETER PAN Sitting on the chair, and opening the story book written by James Matthew. Once upon a time, there was a boy that never grows old in Neverland. Make a simple shape on the oblique plane. The oblique surface is yellow; others are black. The contrast of the shape and color can create an image of sitting on the old moon.

CONCEPT 5 - CLOVER A four-leaf shamrock stands for luck. A three-leaf shamrock represents ordinary. The swinging of the three-leaf clover can make the routine a little bit special.

CONCEPT 6 - FROM THE BAMBOO This is a bamboo chair. It develops the character of bamboo the distinction between the “Tough” and “Soft”. The straight bamboos are hard enough to carry the weights, which are also the center of the chair. This is what I called “Tough”. The bamboo strips which go through the bamboo tubes are flexible, winding around the whole chair. This is what I called “Soft”. This structure is quite ventilatory.

80

CONCEPT 7 - A BIG GIFT It is just like a ribbon dropping from the ceiling, and the entire room looks like a huge present. The surface covered with glossy fabric, and the upper side has mucus on the back so that you can tape it up to the ceiling wall when you lean the chair on the wall, and cut off the unneeded. The middle part of it is made by contour forming steel, which is the seat, and the lower half just stretch randomly.

CONCEPT 8 - HIDE AND SEEK This concept uses the large recycled truck tire, replacing the inside of the tire by some high-density foam-coated fabric. This concept reappear the memory of playing hide-and-seek in those trash tires. It can help you escape from all the realities, and also a huge toy that full of imaginations.

81

SMALL PROTOTYPES The second stage, I selected some popular concepts, and several of my favorites to conduct further development. Making mock models, with the materials that would be used in the real turn. So that I can get to know those materials faster, and getting more information about where I can reach them.

82

About desigl design, I use wood as background to display the mock model, and draw some childlike sketches and words randomly. Furthermore, I put some relative Polaroid pictures near every concept to link up the root of my thoughts.

1:1 PROTOTYPE Stage 3- After discussing with the professor, we picked the “Cloud as the concept to keep working on; also it was the most popular of all. Then I came out with two different ways to reach the effect I want.

After that, I made some spheres by several different materials that differ in densities, combining together as my mockup. And I asked some classmates to test it. Then I adjusted some elements such as the hardness, size, and density according to their feedbacks.

The first one is a brick-like module, which can be constructed randomly by users. The second one is like a solid carpet set, unlike the first one, this had been assembled already.

83

84

85

HOW IT WORKS The nine balls which cover around the whole design are filled with all low-density foam; the rest 40 balls are filled with high-density foam. Every three balls will have a gap. By using the differences of density, the outer nine balls around can be decreased small and be filled in any gaps among them.

86

User can freely change its shape, making a back or foot-rest on it, or just as a bed to lie down. There are hidden zippers in the fur. After removing the stuff, you can wash those furs to keep them clean.

CHALLENGE The observation about children shows that only half children can understand characteristics of the object and inference further by the memory. Among the research, 55% of the children unsuccessfully described Apple, and 40% of the children unsuccessfully describe oranges. This means that children lack of basic training about the observation and reasoning.

One of the key milestone of children physical development is - small muscle movement skills. It’s an important stage in the development of small muscles of the 0 to 6 years old children. children can train their small hand muscles by holding or grasping. If children don’t finish this milestone, it will influence the next development.

PROBLEM 1. Seniors have to bend down whenever stick is falling down, and it is a heavy loading on waists for seniors. 2. Users have to keep holding the stick or find the place to rely against it. 3. There is stick with feet in market. The feet is heavy and occupies too much spaces. It is inconvenience to use it when climbing the stairs. 4. Stick can’t stand independently on slope.

SOLUTION 1.”Balance Stick” would not fall down and stand very well therefore bending down is not necessary. 2. It is unnecessary to keep holding the “Balance Stick”, neither relying on. Hands are free. 3. The base of ”Balance Stick” area is tiny to pass through stairs. It will be easier to climb the stairs. 4.”Balance Stick” can stand independently on slope.

128

CHALLENGE The characteristic of the stick is it can balance itself and not falling down. In the process of experiment, it is difficult challenge to make balance of the stick. After the calculation of mechanics and the center of gravity, we make the stick balance and not falling down. In addition, the weight and the structure intensity are another difficulty. For structure intensity, the handrail and the stick body are the tubal integration design. This tubal design can bear the users weight. To alleviate the weight of stick and the base, it must maintain a particular proportion to some degree. There are two points needed to take into consideration. First, the weight of the base should adopt high density metal “Lead”, in order to meet the needed weight and small volume. Second, stick body should be much lighter compared with the base. We make our best to reduce the material of stick body, and also adopt lighter but hard material “Carbon Fiber.”

129

PROTOTYPE The stage of experimental model, we try to do the material easier to obtain, semi-circular hollow base to base as the Iron Mask, in which the filling weight of iron sand, and the tube body is made of light, the ABS plastic pipe, the experimental results can indeed Does not fall, but needs to improve the overall weight, by the school is currently a professor of materials and mechanical systems and vendors, technology transfer assistance of the Centre for lightweight development.

133

BACKGROUND Nowadays, People pay more and more attention on environmental protection and health problem, which makes “bike” become a more popular transportation option. In addition, in my own country, the rate of bike stealing increased recent years. Sometimes they can steal your bike even you have already locked your bike, I’ve been through this several times, and that drove me crazy. That why I decided to brain storming about this phenomenon, hoping to make some improvements, protecting not only my own bike, but also every body’s bike.

CHALLENGE According to the research, bicycle stealing belongs to “Opportunity Criminal” of criminology. It does not need particular plan and any secret surroundings. The common way to steal bicycle is to use pliers to break the lock. There are two common types of bicycle lock, which are coil type and U-shaped metal, and two ways to unlock the bike---the key and the password lock. Therefore, it comes out the following problems: 1. The coil type lock may be cut off easily. 2. Users usually forget to unlock and cause bicycles out of working. 3. It is easy to decode the password. 4. The bike will be the escape tool after the theft breaks the lock. “Pedal Lock” is a creative design to challenge bicycle stealing problem. Source from: "Bicycle Theft and Situational Crime Prevention: A Case Study of Taipei city" National Taipei University / Graduate School of Criminology / (Wu Hsin-Chu,2010)

134

DESIGN SOLUTION “Pedal Lock” is designed under the circumstance of realization of bicycle stealing, and it has the following characteristics: 1. Impair the willing of the theft to steal. 2. Increase the difficulty of breaking the lock. 3. Increase the difficulty of escape, and not to make the bike be the tool of escape. 4. Increase distinguishability in order to easily find out one’s own bike among all the bikes. 5. Prevent the user from forgetting to unlock and cause bicycle out of working.

135

HOW TO USE 1. Push inside, and let the pedal buckle the orange hexagon junction. 2. Counter-clockwise rotate 2 rounds. 3. Separate the pedal. 4. Roll out the iron pole of one of the pedal. 5. Buckle two pedals on the wheel. 6.Use the key to lock it.

139

BACKGROUND Women lining up for female toilets often happen in our daily life, but that seldom happen for men. Why? The diversity of female and male when using the toilet make the difference.

PHYSICAL In average, people usually take a dump once and take a leak six to twelve times daily, which means the seats use less than the urinals. That’s why In the male toilets, urinals occupied less than toilet seats, that’s why they usually exist more in male toilets.

INSPIRATION In this moment of lining, how about let women go to use the empty room of male toilet? Some female do go to the male toilet when they couldn’t stand lining up for the female toilet. But many people still feel uncomfortable doing it.

140

CONCEPT The concept is sharing the toilet seats in male toilets, which are low frequency used, with women. The process of sharing is natural and private, so women can use it comfortably without being shy. The design of the door helps the space and equipment to play a greater value, which solves the problem for women lining up for female toilets.

141

TWO DOORS One toilet room has two doors, one is for men, and the other is for women.

DOOR HANDLE There is a small hole on the door. When panel lock is down, the hole will be covered, people can tell that this room is occupied or not outside, so that can keep user inside away from any interruption.

142

PANEL LOCK Put down the panel lock inside, and two doors can be locked at the same time. Panel lock is also a place for user to put their luggage temporary, for example: bag, cellphone‌ When leaving, the user has to take their luggage first so that they can put up the panel lock, this can prevent user from leaving personal items in the toilet.

143

SPRING HINGE Two doors are installed with spring loaded axis which will automatically shut the door, which will lock the doors both sides at the same time when user pull down one of the Panel Lock. No one will know whether the user is male or female, so that women can use the space comfortably.

GOAL This design makes space and equipment which are not used be frequently sharing with people in need. "Sharing Door" is not going to replace the female toilets, but playing a supporting role which gives women more choices. By some simple designs and operations, both sides of the space can be locked at once in order to share the space with those in need. Making the Space, equipment, and resources used efficiently by sharing.

ABOUT COOKIE CUTTER There are many cookie cutters which are made by metal or plastic. However, these cookie cutters are all fixed shape and they often with loss of freshness after use few times. The cookies which cut by them are also been boring. Furthermore, maybe there are not any shape of cookie cutter can match our idea.

MATERIAL I started from exploring the material, searching for materials that can deform easily, and can be shaped after the deformation. So it can still change its shape again and again. Take metal for example, usually those deformable soft metals can only be shaped in certain times, and would produce some sharp angles during the process. So it is hard to keep it smooth as before. And the harder the metal is, the harder it can be deformed. It’s made by the material – low-temperature-shaping and nontoxic plastic. When it soaked in hot water above 70°c, it will be softened and can be change shape. And then into the cold water above 20°c, it will be harden to form a fixed. This is totally a physical change. This material is widely used in the assistive devices; for example, the Japan's AOYOSHI.co had used it in the tableware and development best-selling series tableware WILL. CHALLENGE Among the 23 million people in Taiwan, there are very few people, about 0.2 percent---approximately 46 thousand, are blind. Therefore, the facilities which are designed especially for blind people are little, since the market is too small, and the value of commerce is limited. The design of “Guide Sticker” not only provides blind people with convenience, but also offers benefits to other non-blind people. “Guide Sticker” enlarges the range of user group and user demand, broadens the market and commerce value, and has the opportunity to realize mass production. In addition to integrate the information of intuition to benefit blind people, “Guide Sticker” is also beneficial to general people. The open usage method can fit to different situations, different events, and different groups. The followings are the examples of application of “Guide Sticker” for blind people and non-blind people.

PRODUCTION & MATERIAL Plastic, Long-lasting luminous paint. Printing, cutting, injection molding. “Guide Sticker” adopts simple and low cost material and manufacture method. The cost of “Guide Sticker” is almost the same as the general luminous sticker sold in the market, so “Guide Sticker” can be sold in low price. Because of low price, many people are willing to try it, and “Guide Sticker” will begin to bring up positive effects in daily life.

158

7 PRINCIPLES OF UD The process also brings into 7 principles of universal design to survey our design. 1. Equitable use 2. Flexibility in use 3. Simple and intuitive 4. Perceptible information 5. Tolerance for error 6. Low physical effort 7. Size and space for approach and use (Ronald L. Mace, 1996)

159

GENERAL USER The using situation of general users 1. Users can clearly find out which floor it is through the "Guide stickers" luminous display. 2. When the accident happened or out of electricity, user can recognize which floor they are and follow the stickers with the handrail to leave the scene of an accident by luminous display. 3. Stick the stickers on the left side of the key, and the users can touch the bumps and see the bumps when they hold the key. It can help users intuitively recognize the correct way to insert the key. 4. Stick the “Guide Sticker to the door lock with the same number of the key, and the users can find out the right key.

160

BLIND USER The using situation of blind people 1. Put the "Guide stickers" on the door bell, so the blind people can recognize which floor it is by touching the number on the stickers. 2. It may be difficult for blind people to know which floor they are when they are climbing the stairs, especially at the floor junction. Besides, they even don’t know if they reach the last stairs or not. Put the stickers on the end of the handrail will decrease the disturbance when blind people climbing stairs. 3. Put the stickers on the left side of the key, and the users can touch the bumps when they hold it. It can help users intuitively recognize the correct way to insert the key. Left-handed users put the stickers on the right side. 4. Put the “Guide Sticker” to the door lock with the same number with the key, and the blind users can find the right key by touching the bumps.

ABOUT NMNC The goal of Build museum: First, the exhibition and education programs: To clarify the principles and phenomena of natural science to inspire the community of concern and interest in science to help schools achieve their educational goals, and then for the establishment of long-term development of natural science foundation. Second, collection and research: collection of nationally representative samples of natural objects and related information (including anthropology artifacts) for collection, research, and for display and education. Museum of Natural Science in the five theme pavilions.

PRODUCTS OF NMNC Within the Cultural Center of the country now selling the goods, most are not designed for the museum, a high proportion are in other places can also buy merchandise, and even the museum portion of the goods and no Relationship. The products designed specifically for the museum with photos printed from almost all of the bookmarks, postcards and other flat printed products.

176

PROBLEM AND OPPORTUNITIE After the actual visits to the Science Museum can be found, and now "museum designed specifically for the unique product, " this block there is still much room for growth, the majority of foreign countries have invested some of the museum and get good results, I believe this will be a Area worthy of investment. "Museum designed specifically for the unique goods " if the outstanding museums, like other countries in line, trying to escape a simple pattern for print, allowing users to happy to buy, in the purchase of consumer satisfaction, the future use and When seen, but also brought back memories of the visit, but also deepened the impression of the Science Museum.

TARGET GROUP Age: 20 to 40 years of visitors Lifestyle: often sitting at a computer table or desk, a reading habit. Population characteristics: on the arts, culture-related things interesting. Consumer Motivation: wants to buy a souvenir to commemorate this trip, this souvenir has links to the Science Museum of the matter sorted out in future be able to bring up memories recalled, and this souvenir will be used to function normally. Presented to friends and family.

DESIGN DIRECTION Of life for the target population and population characteristics based on considerations towards suitable for computer desk, desk or reading articles used for the development direction, and with the collection of objects has a profound link. I would like to Cobo exhibition hall this theme in three directions issued to:

CONCEPT 1: TIMBER NOTE / NOTEBOOK Are all around us from the trees used for paper, loggers cut trees in the tree when cut out giant "by mouth " and "Chasing mouth, "Let the tree to determine the direction of fall, when the action is logging will be done. Features used in this hardcover notebook carry on, as if with a tree-like, more deep, "Paper from the tree " in the sense of concern on the environment, treasure the precious resources of nature. Taiwan has a variety of rare trees, the trees in the color of each grain are also different, the use of this can be extended in Notepad on a "red cypress, ""cypress, ""Rosewood"and other different styles.

178

CONCEPT 2: ARCHAEOLOGIST / TEMPERATURE COASTER Coaster imitation rock formations, and the heat sensor in the above pigment pattern printed on a variety of fossils, when equipped with a hot cup away coaster, the coaster will emerge out of the fossil patterns, archaeologists excavated the fossils brought surprise when .

CONCEPT 3: DANDELION / PAPERWEIGHT MAGNETS Dandelion mom has a lot of dandelion seeds children, grew up in the north to the small seeds are taken away, he put them on the refrigerator blown, blown on the board office, several small seeds also mount my mother refused to leave. They certainly do not want to know the north and separated from each other, and he would on a whiteboard on the refrigerator and the children returned to her mother's side. Dandelion Mama has been on the table, she never left.

THE BEST WAY TO LEARN I was in a team with two foreign designers, Matthieu from France, and Tom from England. The only language we used was English! That was my first time working and communicating in second language. I was confused by the British accent, but I soon got used to it. I took this as the best opportunity for me to both advanced my design and English abilities.

GET TO KNOW THE WORLD, GET TO KNOW MY DREAM During the internship, I loved asking questions such as how they learned to design in their own country, and I can always find out something different but interesting. Take Matthieu for example, he interned several times when he was still a design student. I asked him “How about your study?” He answered me” I can also learn in my internship, so why stick to the school? ” And Tom went to many different countries after graduated, doing design works and experiencing different cultures at the same time. That gave me a total different thought! Working and living in other countries came into my mind and attracted me ever since.

RETHINK ABOUT FORMING One of the projects during my intern was a GPS watch that Magellan going to produce in the future. We started analysing and researching about the users and competitive brands. Part of the research was to redefine those forms that have already in the market place, and evaluated them into our new concept and features by a huge amount of sketches and discussions. This was a brand new experience for me, also the part I was missing, and I totally rearranged my thoughts about “forming”. I used to love simple and geometric form the best, also think it represents good design taste, just like what MUJI did, and I am fascinated to those full white, full black products. But after discussing with Matthieu and Tom, I realized my taste in shape and form was not good enough, and I never really think about it before. How can I be the best if I don’t have the ability to form? This thought really woke me up from my old small world, it is time for me to break the line I draw for myself.

SEE DIFFERENTLY, THINK SOLID In order to improve my poor forming ability, I first listened to what Matthieu and Tom said when we brainstorming, at the same time, I collected some pictures of products to help me think, trying to really “see” how they composed. Sometimes I drew, too. Step by step, I kind of understand the difference between objects and objects. Not only the color and materials, but also how they built by points, lines, and surfaces. Every single object in our life is so particular and special with their look and shape. Suddenly I realized that there are so many quiet objects that I can appreciate in my daily life.

A BETTER LIFE STYLE, A BETTER DESIGNER Benefits I got and things I learned from this internship: A brand new life style Start jogging. (It was for a project at first.) Have 2 extra hours on transportation for reading To really understand how to appreciate “forms” Better Sketch skills Advanced English ability Knowing about what I have or what I don’t have more than before, and discovered an exact direction. Meeting some nice people with great memories I’ll never forget.
