THEATER PLAZA WHAT A TEMPORARY PLAZA YOUTH SPACE.
WHERE
AN OLD INDUSTRIAL AREA IN NORTH WEST COPENHAGEN.
CONTEXT
A BACHELOR ASSIGNMENT MADE AT HOLSCHER ARCHITECTS. THE CONCEPT WAS PREDETERMINED FROM A COMPETITION WHERE I WON 2ND PRIZE AND MADE THE FINAL PROPOSAL TOGETHER WITH THE COMPETITION WINNERS.
FROM CONCEPT TO PROJECT This project started as a competition where the overall concept would be decided. I came second place, but I was invited to work with the competition winners to come up with a final proposal. The project was part of my bachelors study, and is currently being processed by the municipality of Copenhagen. The plaza is temporary but without a specific expiry date. The temporary aspect makes it possible to develop new solutions for the site. Many of the objects in this project can be relocated to a new site when the plaza is redeveloped for a new purpose. The winning concept was “Theatre” and my concept was “an activity plaza”. These two ideas were merged together, where it now becomes possible to stage your self by performing art like dancing, theatre, marshal arts, or exhibitions like painting and sculpture. There are a lot of local interests in the area like a youth club, schools, a Thai boxing club etc. These people were
included in the process and invited to a workshop where they could input their own ideas for the new plaza. In the process of explaining the project to people who aren’t used to looking at architectural drawings, it was a great advantage to have a good model. The model work quickly became an important tool in the development of the design. We used the “try-and-failure” method a lot. The model was especially important in communicating our ideas to the public. People could relate the model to the site and interact with it moving objects around the space. Through out the project I had to present it to several different groups including politicians, the general public, potential sponsors and teachers. Some groups would have up to fifty people present. This was a new, but great experience.

The plaza has elements that are adaptable to specific uses. The multifunctional boxes can be arranged for a scene when a theatre is playing, at a flee marked it is possible to use the boxes as tables and during the day the boxes can be used for sports for example soccer boards, etc. The plaza is split into different zones-of-use differentiated by the ground material. The zones are placed where the function of the zone is most suitable. An example is the “lounge” zone where evening sun is desired, and the “sport and activity” zone where shadow provides a preferable environment.

EXHIBITION IDENTITY WHAT EXHIBITI ON IDENTITY FOR DANISH DESIGN SCHOOL (DKDS) WHERE COPENHAGEN SHOWHOW 2009 CONTEXT EACH OF THE CREATIVE SCHOOLS IN DENMARK WERE ASKED TO CREATE A UNIQUE ‘IMAGE’ OF THE SCHOOL TO BE DISPLAYED AT THE COPENHAGEN SHOWHOW 2009 - SHOWCASING SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN. MADE IN COLLABORATION WITH TWO DESIGNERS.

WHAT TO DO WITH A GLASSHOUSE Each of the creative schools in Denmark was asked to show the identity of their school at the Copenhagen Showhow 2009. Our framework was a glasshouse, which we should give a unique identity to represent the school, while making it attractive and welcoming. The work symbolizes how the students and thoughts in The Danish Designschool cannot only be inside the walls but are creatively reaching out into the world. This is indicated by the non-existent glass roof, and how the strings keep stretching out of the greenhouse and into the sky. The core learning in the school is process, which are shown by the sketchbooks hanging in the strings.
The process from idea to realisation has many solutions. The fact that we only had our concept and sketches but no technical drawings made me understand how to think outside the box when it came to making decisions regarding construction, especially when problems would occur during the construction phase. It was a great experience to make a project where I could follow my intuition, to experience that it was the right, a sometimes creative, intuitive solution.

THEATER SQUARE WHAT WHERE CONTEXT
COMMUNITY CENTER WHAT TO IMPROVE A COMMUNITY CENTRE. WHERE NANSENSGADE, INNER COPENHAGEN. CONTEXT AT MY TIME AT THE DANISH DESIGN SCHOOL (DKDS) I FOLLOWED THE COURSE “AIRPLAY” WHERE I MADE A PROPOSAL FOR AN EXTENSION OF A COMMUNITY CENTRE.
WEAVING TURNS INTO A FAÇADE The process at DKDS was excitingly different compared to the University of Copenhagen. I was plunged into a completely new way of thinking, where we were asked to design before knowing any theory (a theory in itself – where there is no right or wrong, but a result that can be discussed). We started to fold paper. The folding paper was then analysed and forgotten. Then we started to weave packing tape to an unknown figure, without knowing what the final task was. The weaving process was again a totally free process without any right or wrong, only a final weaved object. This weaved object would later be analysed and give inspiration to our final task - to improve an existing community centre. I choose to explore the architecture of the building and
how it was connected to the surrounding landscape, instead of my traditional approach where I focus on landscape. It was a great experience to think inner space and how the puzzle of toilets, staff room, lobby etc. could end up. At the DKDS I learned to be more creative and to think in new directions before making a final proposal, and how to get inspiration from objects and theory that do not necessarily have anything to do with the subject.

The community centre is at the moment a worn down, but popular centre. Where it is possible to play sports, theatre and music. It is always full of people and could use more space for activities. The final design was a glass extension of the community centre, which provided more space for the activities. The design of the faรงade is inspired from the weaving process where I especially was fascinated by the light and shadow of the object.

SQUARE WHAT A PUBLIC SQUARE IN A NEWLY DEVELOPED AREA. WHERE NEAR FLINTHOLM STATION, FREDERIKSBERG. CONTEXT I WAS ASKED BY HOLSCHER ARCHITECTS TO FINALISE THE DETAIL DESIGN FOR THE SQUARE, PAYING PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO ACCESSIBILITY, AN EXTENSION OF THIS LEAD TO THE FINAL DESIGN OF THE SQUARE.
WORKING IN REALITY At first I was part of a team with an architect making the overall design. The concept was done in collaboration with Gehl Architects. The design is based on the theory of how people move and act in outdoor spaces. The flows of movement had been analyzed with regards to the locations of lights, stairs and ramps etc. The area is newly developed, where the residents consist mainly of older
citizens and young families. After the overall design was done I worked alone in bringing the project to detail design. In this period I made sure that the accessibility regarding the disabled, old and young was approved by the client Frederiksberg municipality. This was a long process

due to requirements set by the municipality. Several areas within the design had to be reconsidered and redesigned. In the process I learned how to talk and argue about design, and through dialog make the best suitable solutions for the specific problem. The design period was stimu-
lating and I learned how important good arguments are and how these can affect the rest of the team and the on going process by which the best result is achieved. At the same time I experienced how much the client can affect the final project, both in the design and as well in the technical solutions – for better and worse.

RAIN GARDEN WHAT A SMALL 1:1 RAIN GARDEN – AN AREA THAT ACCUMULATES RAINWATER TO PREVENT FLOODING. WHERE ROSKILDE, DENMARK CONTEXT DUE TO GLOBAL WARMING IT IS GOING TO RAIN MORE IN THE FUTURE. THIS WILL LEAD TO MORE FREQUENT EVENTS OF FLOODING. THE RAIN GARDEN IS A METHOD OF PREVENTING FLOODS LOCALLY. MADE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF COPENHAGEN
1:1 RAIN GARDEN INSTALLATION This project was done in a thematic course where technical factors were in focus. It was done in groups where we had to come up with a design that met specific requirements; - The garden should be 4 x 4 m2 - It was required to have a capacity of 720 L. over a short period of time. - There had to be grass, one tree and a path. - The soil balance had to be the same as it was before construction. - The group had to integrate gravel into the project. We choose to reinterpret the brief and use unconventional materials like crushed glass and crushed marble etc.
Before constructing the rain garden we had to draw up detailed technical drawings like sections and plans for the site. We used knowledge gained from a “landscape gardener� seminar to put into practice what we had learned. This was my first landscape architecture project that was realised. The building process was an experience where I learned how important good drawings and calculations are to the final project.

SOCIAL SUBURBAN WHAT A PROJECT ABOUT THE SUBURB. WHERE ØLSTYKKE, DENMARK. CONTEXT THROUGH A COMPARISON AND ANALYSES OF CHRISTIANIA IN INNER COPENHAGEN AND A TYPICAL SUBURB ØLSTYKKE – ONE HOUR FROM COPENHAGEN, I MADE A PROPOSAL FOR HOW ØLSTYKKE CAN BE A MORE SOCIAL SUBURB. MADE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF COPENHAGEN
WORKING WITH THE SUBURB The project was arranged in two blocks, the first block involved group work and the second block was devoted to individual study. In the group work we created a lot of analyses and concept models to understand the two given sites – Ølstykke and Christiania better. From this we made a brief inspired from the social lifestyle in Christiania and raising the question; How can architecture influence social behaviour? I was interested in investigating how a small intervention / idea can effect a given site most i.e. minimum intervention with maximum effect. I narrowed my focus to the gardens in Ølstykke and tried to look at how the green areas (gardens) can work as catalysts for social meetings. By looking at Chris-
tiania and how they use community centres and a diverse building form for social interaction, I came up with the idea to make common multifunctional buildings in each garden. These buildings will have one specific function that all citizens in the local area can take advantage of. The proposal is mostly meant as a debate on the concept of suburban living and is currently being published in the local newspaper to get some reactions from the citizens of Ølstykke. The photos seen on the sites are models and visualisations for the process and presentations through the course. Which all helped to the final result of a video presentation of the project.
