“Opportunity Village is honored that this longtime company that is respected by the community and community leaders like Florence and Ivan want to lend a hand to Opportunity Village,” Smith said.

One of the ways that Florence Shapiro and Ivan Sher are helping the community is by hosting exclusive “taste events” in support of charity. Its first in 2015 honored Opportunity Village, a Las Vegas-based not-for-profit organization that helps 3,000 Southern Nevadans per year with intellectual disabilities and their families.

“The evening was about more than just raising money, it was also about raising awareness of how a community can come together to help individuals with intellectual disabilities. Everyone attending was interested in what Opportunity Village does and they appreciate our selfsufficiency and ‘can-do’ attitude. A special moment for me was when an Opportunity Village artist, Alyssa, sold a piece of artwork during the event and she was there to meet the buyer. She knows her work is going into a beautiful home and is thrilled.”

“A few years back, Florence and I decided that we wanted to give back to the community by holding very private, invitation-only dinner parties that we call ‘taste events’ in support of local philanthropy,” Sher said. “Through these events, we have the opportunity to invite a few clients and friends and connect on a level that has nothing to do with real estate. Rather we help like-minded people connect on a common cause.” Last month’s event was held in a client’s magnificent 7,808-square-foot residence priced at $3.85 million in The Ridges. In addition to enjoying food catered by Vintner Grill, pieces of art created by Opportunity Village artists and beautiful music, attendees learned about how the nonprofit organization has helped Nevadans with disabilities for 61 years. “Last month’s event was magical when Linda Smith, Opportunity Village’s associate executive director, got up there and spoke. Whenever you meet somebody like her who is so involved in an organization and is passionate about it, it gives the cause life. When Linda spoke and shared her story, you could hear a pin drop,” Sher said. Smith is thankful for the opportunity.

This is not the first time that Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, Nevada Properties, has shown support for Opportunity Village. “They have helped us not just through donations but also by generously giving their time by volunteering, including that of company CEO Mark Stark who serves on our Foundation Board. We are so appreciative. They have made a true difference,” Smith said.

THIS IS THE FIRST OF SEVERAL “TASTE EVENTS” PLANNED THIS YEAR. “We’ve been very fortunate in being able to meet and work with the most successful people in the United States and beyond the borders of the U.S,” Sher said. “These type of events is our chance to say ‘thank you’ to Las Vegas and to give back to the community where we’ve experienced success.”
